This Indian state’s IAS officers have turned part-time government school teachers to improve the quality of education

• Nearly 50 IAS officers in Bhopal have come up with an initiative to teach students of government schools and help the teachers.
• The officers teach subjects like English and Hindi in different areas.
• On similar lines, Ruhi Danish Ashraf taught over 90 students in remote areas of Arunachal Pradesh for free, helping them clear examinations.

In a bid to empower education in Indian Schools, nearly 50 IAS officers in Bhopal have come up with an initiative to teach students of government schools.

The move was launched by IAS Tarun Pithode on Monday, when 17 officers from the team took classes in several government schools — including higher secondary schools. The officers, who were willing to contribute, spared time before office to teach for two hours.

The move, jointly taken with the School education department, is aimed at “sharing the burden” of teachers. “If higher officers join the initiative, it will help them in making education policy,” Pithode pointed out.

The IAS officers, including retired ones, teach subjects like English and Hindi in different areas.

Imparting education to women willing to restart studies, IAS Nidhi Nivedita said “People criticise the education system but they never try to become a part of it. When I taught students, I realised that they have a zeal to achieve something but they are lacking due to few opportunities. By taking classes, we are just motivating the students.”

Recently, Ruhi Danish Ashraf, an IAS officer’s wife taught Physics to over 90 students in remote areas of Arunachal Pradesh for free, helping them clear examinations. The school did not have a Physics teacher for over five years. The initiative increased the passing percentage among students to 80% from 21% in the previous year.
