Unrelenting rain forced the abandonment of the first-day's play of the two-day practice match between India and Prime Minister's XI here on Saturday, robbing Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill of some much-needed Pink ball game time ahead of the day-night second Test against Australia at Adelaide. The teams have agreed to play a 50-over-a-side match on Sunday at the Manuka Oval, weather permitting. <br /><br />However, the day might have come as a dampener for captain Rohit, who had skipped the first Test at Perth to welcome a baby boy into his family, ahead of the Pink Ball Test, starting from December 6. <br /><br />Though he has had couple of extensive net sessions with Pink ball, facing some quality bowlers in a real-match situation holds a different value, considering India's last day-night Test was against Sri Lanka in March 2022 in Bengaluru. <br /><br />Gill had to sit out of the first Test because of a finger injury and the top-order batter is expected to walk back into the eleven. <br /><br />Prior to that, Gill, who also had a good hit at nets on Friday, would have been hoping to enter the match zone through this side game. <br /><br />Rohit and Gill are expected to replace Devdutt Padikkal and Dhruv Jurel in the playing eleven for the Adelaide Test. <br /><br />Now, they will pin their hope to form some early plans for the Pink ball Test on Sunday through that 50-over game. <br /><br />India have so far played four pink ball Tests. India's Schedule At Paris Paralympics 2024, August 29

The just-announced <keyword id="22906567" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="Unified-Pension-Scheme" source="keywords">Unified Pension Scheme</keyword> for central <keyword id="19933272" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="government-employees" source="keywords">government employees</keyword> will be available only for those who are currently subscribers of the New Pension Scheme (NPS), including retirees. The new scheme guarantees employees 50% of their average basic pay over the last 12 months before retirement, as a pension for a minimum qualifying service of 25 years against a market returns linked payout under the NPS. <br /><br /> According to the scheme approved by the Union Cabinet, the pension will be proportionate for a lesser service period of up to a minimum of 10 years. Also, assured pension of Rs 10,000 per month on superannuation after a minimum of 10 years of service will be provided. <br /><br />The scheme has been brought out to address the concerns of government employees over NPS, which came into effect from January 1, 2004. Under the <keyword id="3246232" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Old-Pension-Scheme" source="Orion">old pension scheme</keyword> (OPS), effective before January 2004, employees got 50 % of their last drawn basic pay as pension. <br /><br />Unlike the old pension scheme, UPS is contributory in nature, wherein employees will be required to contribute 10% of their basic salary and dearness allowance while the employer's contribution (the central government) will be 18.5%. <br /><br />Under the NPS, the employer contribution is 14%, and the employee contribution is 10%. However, the eventual payout depends on the market returns on that corpus, mostly invested in government debt. <br /><br />Employees, under the OPS, were not required to make any contribution. They, however, contributed to the General Provident Fund (GPF). The accumulated amount, along with interest, was paid to the employee at the time of retirement. <br /><br />As the NPS was less attractive than the OPS, several non-BJP-ruled states decided to go back to the old pension scheme, which offered a DA-linked benefit. This prompted the Centre to constitute a committee in April 2023, under former Finance Secretary and now Cabinet Secretary-designate TV Somanathan to suggest improvement in the NPS architecture. <br /><br />Fulfilling the long pending demands of government employees ahead of assembly elections in Haryana and Jammu and Kashmir, the Union Cabinet on August 24 approved the UPS, which will provide assured pension to 23 lakh eligible central government employees. <br /><br />Those opting for the UPS will not be able to switch back. The UPS will put an additional burden of Rs 6,250 crore on the exchequer per year. The expenditure will vary every year according to variations in the number of employees. <br /><br />In addition, there will be an arrear of Rs 800 crore that has to be paid under the National Pension System (NPS) to employees retiring before March 31, 2025. If these retirees opt for UPS, they will receive arrears. <br /><br />"UPS is being implemented by the Central Government, benefitting 23 lakh central government employees," Information &amp; Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said on X on Sunday. <br /><br />If states also adopt the UPS architecture, a total of over 90 lakh government employees, who are presently on NPS, would be benefitted, he added. On Sunday, Maharashtra, where assembly elections are due later in the year, became the first state to announce the adoption of the UPS for its employees. <br /><br />RSS-affiliate Bharatiya Mazdoor Sangh (BMS) said though the government has attempted to overcome the shortcomings of the NPS, there are still some issues compared to OPS. <br /><br />BMS will decide its future course of action only after a detailed study of the UPS after it is notified. All India Trade Union Congress (AITUC) said it is nothing but an extension of the existing NPS. <br /><br />The trade union expressed apprehensions that UPS will have a lot of aberrations once implemented. AITUC reiterated that it will continue to fight for the restoration of the non-contributory OPS. ICRA Chief Economist Aditi Nayar said assured pensions will add to the government's committed expenditure in the future while reducing the uncertainty for employees. <br /><br /> "This will have to be built into the fiscal consolidation roadmap going ahead," Nayar added. The UPS reflects a thoughtful approach to long-term social security, addressing concerns about the adequacy and sustainability of pension benefits in a rapidly changing economic landscape, said Shardul Amarchand Mangaldas &amp; Co Partner Dorothy Thomas. <br /><br /> "This move signals the government's commitment to providing robust support for its workforce, enhancing financial stability for millions of government employees across the country," Thomas said.

For ages, grandma’s advice has echoed in dining rooms worldwide: “Eat early and light for dinner — it’s healthier!” Now, a cutting-edge study has given this age-old wisdom a firm scientific stamp of approval.<br /><br />Published recently, the research reveals a startling fact: consuming over 45% of your daily calorie intake after 5 PM messes with glucose levels in your body. The findings indicate this can lead to type 2 <keyword id="6359018" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Diabetes" source="Orion">diabetes</keyword>, cardiovascular damage, and chronic inflammation.<br /><h3 style="line-height:1.38;margin-top:14.0pt;margin-bottom:4.0pt;">The problem with late eating</h3>“Maintaining high levels of glucose over long periods of time can have implications including a higher risk of progressing to type 2 diabetes,” explains lead researcher Dr. Diana Díaz Rizzolo.<br /><br />While most people previously associated late-night feasts with weight gain (thank you, midnight pizza cravings!), this study points to a new villain: disrupted <keyword id="21482301" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="glucose-metabolism" source="keywords">glucose metabolism</keyword>. Divided into two groups — early eaters (those who ate most calories before evening) and late eaters (those who devoured 45% or more of their daily calories after 5 PM) — the participants logged their meals in real time using a mobile app.<br /><br />Here’s the catch: both groups consumed the <em>same</em> number of calories and foods. Yet, late eaters consistently showed poorer glucose tolerance. They also tended to load up on carbs and fats as the day wound down, a dietary choice that’s especially problematic at night.<br /><br />Díaz Rizzolo breaks it down: “The body’s ability to metabolize glucose is limited at night because the secretion of insulin is reduced, and our cells’ sensitivity to this hormone declines due to the circadian rhythm.” Essentially, your body’s natural “clock” isn’t set up to handle big meals when the sun goes down.<br /><h3 style="line-height:1.38;margin-top:14.0pt;margin-bottom:4.0pt;">Timing is everything</h3>This study flips the script on how we think about food and health. “Until now, personal decisions in nutrition have been based on two main questions: how much we eat, and what foods to choose,” says Díaz Rizzolo. “With this study, a new factor in cardiometabolic health is beginning to become increasingly important: when we eat.”<br /><br />Her advice? Embrace the daylight! Make breakfast and lunch your calorie heavyweights, and keep dinner light and early. Want to up your health game? Avoid ultra-processed foods, fast food, and carb-heavy treats in the evening altogether. Kehlo <keyword id="19895063" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="india" source="keywords">India</keyword>'s share, announced in the budget presented by finance minister <keyword id="19916618" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="nirmala-sitharaman" source="keywords">Nirmala Sitharaman</keyword> here, is Rs 20 crore more than the revised allocation of Rs 880 crore during the previous financial year. <br /><br /> With the <keyword id="19986816" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Olympic" source="keywords">Olympic</keyword> cycle set to come to an end in Paris in August this year, and the <keyword id="19895708" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Commonwealth-Games" source="keywords">Commonwealth Games</keyword> and <keyword id="20007738" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Asian-Games" source="keywords">Asian Games</keyword> still two years away, the budget for the Sports Ministry has seen only a marginal increase of Rs 45.36 crore from the previous cycle. <br /><br /> The budget for the previous cycle was Rs 3,396.96 crore for the previous financial year. <br /><br /> The government has invested heavily in Khelo India over the years as the programme continues to unearth talent from all parts of the country. <br /><br /> While Khelo India's actual allocation in 2022-23 stood at Rs 596.39 crore, it was increased by more than Rs 400 crore, to Rs 1,000 crores, in the 2023-24 budget, before being revised to Rs 880 crore. <br /><br /> The government has continued to add programmes ever since the inaugural Khelo India Youth Games (KIYG) were held in 2018. <br /><br /> The ministry added Khelo India University Games in 2020, before also launching the Khelo India Winter Games the same year and the Khelo India Para Games in 2023. <br /><br /> Hundreds of Khelo India State Centres of Excellence (KISCE) have been set up across the country, which aim to provide facilities for athletes with potential. Several Khelo India athletes are currently in India's Olympic-bound contingent. <br /><br /> The government's assistance to <keyword id="20418970" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="National-Sports-Federations" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="National Sports Federations" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="National Sports Federations">National Sports Federations</keyword> (NSFs) has also seen an increase of Rs 15 crore -- from Rs 325 crore in 2023-24 to Rs 340 crore in the latest budget. <br /><br /> The budget for Sports Authority of India, which apart from maintaining its stadia across the country also manages the Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS) to prepare athletes for the global sporting extravaganzas, has also been enhanced from Rs 795.77 crore to Rs 822.60 crore, which is a jump of Rs 26.83 crore. <br /><br /> The <keyword id="20524251" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="National-Anti-Doping-Agency" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="National Anti-Doping Agency" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="National Anti-Doping Agency">National Anti-Doping Agency</keyword> (NADA) and the National Dope Testing Laboratory (NDTL), which does all the testing, have received marginal increase in their budgets. <br /><br /> While NADA's budget has gone up from Rs 21.73 crore last year to Rs 22.30 crore, NDTL has got Rs 22 crore, up from Rs 19.50 last year.

Following the delay in the verdict on wrestler <keyword id="19895499" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="Vinesh-Phogat" source="keywords">Vinesh Phogat</keyword>'s disqualification in the Paris Olympics 2024, <keyword id="110074" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Wrestling-Federation-of-India" source="Orion">Wrestling Federation of India</keyword> Vice-President <keyword id="22782425" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Jai-Prakash-Chaudhary" source="Orion">Jai Prakash Chaudhary</keyword> said that he thinks that the decision will come in favour of the athlete. <br /><br />The Court of Arbitration for Sport (<keyword id="20253262" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="CAS" source="keywords">CAS</keyword>) has further delayed the verdict on Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat's appeal regarding her disqualification from the women's 50kg final at the Paris Olympics to August 16. <br /><br />According to the Indian Olympic Association (<keyword id="19934453" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="IOA" source="keywords">IOA</keyword>), the verdict, originally scheduled for Tuesday, August 13 at 9:30 pm IST, has been delayed to August 16.<br /><br />"The CAS ad hoc division president has allowed Hon. Dr Annabelle Bennett, Sole Arbitrator in the Vinesh Phogat vs. United World Wrestling (UWW) and the International Olympic Committee (IOC) matter, an extension until 6-00 p.m. (Paris time) on Friday, August 16, 2024," IOA said in a statement on Tuesday. <br /><br />"It shouldn't have happened. But, I think something in the favour of Vinesh is going to come... It seems that there are some powers involved in it and she will get the medal... I'll say that her staffs are at fault. It's their duty how to decrease the weight. But, let's see what happens on August 16... Big advocates are there, PM Modi has also taken cognisance and I think the decision will be in our favour..." Jai Prakash said while speaking to ANI. <br /><br />CAS has established an ad hoc division in Paris, led by President Michael Lenard from the US, to handle Olympic cases. This division operates within the Paris judicial court in the 17th arrondissement.<br /><br />Vinesh Phogat was disqualified on the morning of the Paris Olympics final for exceeding the 50kg weight limit. During the weigh-in, she was found to be 100 grams over the limit.<br /><br />Following her disqualification, Phogat had on August 7 requested CAS to award her the silver medal.<br /><br />CAS had previously extended the deadline to August 13. Vinesh had reached the gold medal match by defeating Cuba's Yusneylis Guzman Lopez 5-0 in the semi-finals.<br /><br />The 29-year-old was set to face Sarah Ann Hildebrandt of the United States for the gold but was disqualified for the weight limit breach. A day after her disqualification, Vinesh also announced her decision to retire from wrestling.<br /><br />After Vinesh failed to breach the qualification mark, the Indian Olympic Association members and officials came under scrutiny.<br /><br />IOA President PT Usha on Sunday clarified that the responsibility of weight management of athletes in sports like wrestling, weightlifting, boxing and judo is that of each athlete and his or her coach and not that of the IOA-appointed Chief Medical Officer Dr Dinshaw Pardiwala and his team.<br /><br />Usha said that each Indian athlete in the Paris 2024 <keyword id="20028513" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Olympic-Games" source="keywords">Olympic Games</keyword> in such sport had his or her own support team. In a bid to support meritorious and deserving Indian students to pursue their higher education without having to worry about funds, the government today announced the <keyword id="23831216" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="PM-Vidyalaxmi-scheme" source="keywords">PM-Vidyalaxmi scheme</keyword>. Here's all you need to know about it:<br /><br /> The scheme will cover students who secure admission to one of the top 860 higher educational institutions in the country. In effect, this is set to benefit over 22 lakh students annually. You can apply for this loan via a soon-to-be launched consolidated PM-Vidyalaxmi portal. <br /><br /> The loan application will be entirely digital and will not require collateral or assets to be pledged in place of a loan or even a guarantor. For loans up to Rs 7.5 lakh, the government will provide a 75% credit guarantee.<br /><br /> If your family's annual income is up to Rs 8 lakh, you are eligible for receiving loans up to Rs 10 lakh at an interest rate of up to 3% lower rates. This support will be offered to around 1 lakh students every year, and those who opt for technical or professional courses from government-run institutions will be given preference for the same. <br /><br /> The government has already set aside Rs 3,600 crore for the same, to be utilized between 2024 and 2031, benefiting 7 lakh students in this period. All eligible students whose family's annual income falls below the Rs 4.5 lakh threshold will receive a full subsidy on interest payable. <br /><br /> As for which higher education institutions (HEIs) will qualify, it will depend on recent NIRF (National Institutional Ranking Framework) rankings. This will include: <br /><br /><ul><li>All centrally governed institutions</li><li>Public and private institutions that have made it to NIRF's top 100 rankings in the overall, category, and domain-specific categories</li><li>All state government HEIs that are ranked between 101 and 200 in <keyword id="22759868" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="NIRF-rankings" source="keywords">NIRF rankings</keyword> will also be eligible.</li></ul><br /> <h2>Rising cost of education</h2> Data from NSSO (National Sample Survey Office) highlights that the average expenditure on education in India has doubled in the last decade. Per the All India Survey on Higher Education 2020-21, the tuition fees for engineering courses in most private institutions have already risen by 50% over the past 10 years. Education inflation currently stands high, at about 11–12%.<br /><br /> The demand for educational loans is also inching up steadily. Per RBI data, as of September 20, 2024, the total quantum of outstanding education loans stood at Rs 62,389 crore, up 2.8% from Rs 60,715 crore in September 2023. India's largest lender, the State Bank of India, leads the education loan bandwagon, with disbursals worth Rs 10,860 crore in FY24. <br /><br />

While it is a decent chipset, the company could have offered a more powerful chipset, in line with other smartphones in the segment.<br /><br />The device offers a good gaming experience, even with Full HD graphics. I tried popular titles such as Battlegrounds Mobile India and Call of Duty: Mobile on the smartphone.<br /><br />The smartphone is powered by a 4,500mAh battery with 125W fast charging support and 50W wireless charging support. At a time when a lot of devices more expensive than the Edge 50 Pro do not offer wireless charging, it is good to see 50W wireless charging on the device. It does miss out on a more powerful chipset and comes with a slightly smaller battery.<br /><br />If you are looking for a smartphone with a good design and a clean user interface, the Motorola Edge 50 Pro is a good option. This decision was announced on Wednesday, following Phogat's <keyword id="19902399" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="disqualification" source="keywords">disqualification</keyword> last week for exceeding the 50kg weight limit.<br /><br />CAS issued a statement, saying, "The application filed by Vinesh Phogat on August 7 has been dismissed," as per the agency reports.<br /><br />Vinesh Phogat was found to be 100 grams over the limit during the weigh-in prior to the women's 50kg final, leading to her disqualification. She was set to compete against Sarah Ann Hildebrandt of the United States for the gold medal.<br /><br />After her disqualification, 29-year-old Phogat requested the CAS on August 7 to award her the silver medal instead. The <keyword id="19896477" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-Olympic-Association" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Indian Olympic Association" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="Indian Olympic Association">Indian Olympic Association</keyword> (IOA) initially announced that the verdict would be given on Tuesday, August 13 at 9:30 pm IST. However, it was delayed to August 16.<br /><br />Harish Salve, a renowned Indian lawyer and former Solicitor General of India and King's Counsel, represented the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) in this landmark case.<br /><br />Before her disqualification, Vinesh had reached the gold medal match by defeating Cuba's Yusneylis Guzman Lopez 5-0 in the semi-finals. The decision came as a blow to Phogat, who, following her disqualification, made a shocking decision to retire from wrestling altogether.<br /><br />In an emotional post on X, Phogat expressed her sense of defeat and gratitude, stating, "Maa kushti (wrestling) won against me, I lost. Forgive me, your dream and my courage have been broken. I don't have any more strength now. Goodbye Wrestling 2001-2024. I will always be indebted to you all for forgiveness."<br /><br />Earlier this week, Wrestling Federation of India Vice-President Jai Prakash Chaudhary hoped that the decision will come in favour of the athlete. However, despite a strong case presented by the IOA, the appeal has reportedly been dismissed.<br /><br />The entire episode led to many sportspersons coming out in support of Phogat, while some criticized the IOA officials for the athlete's failure to meet the weight requirements.
