<a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/Amazon-beats-Flipkart-in-overall-web-traffic/articleshow/52886403.cms">Amazon India</a>, the e-commerce major headquartered in Seattle, US, has started a new fulfilment centre in Sonipat, around 50 kms from country’s capital New Delhi. 
 
With this new fulfilment centre, the e-tailer will be able to fulfil orders from Delhi and Haryana’s surrounding areas within 24 hours, as told to <a href="http://economictimes.indiatimes.com/industry/services/retail/amazon-inaugurates-indias-biggest-fulfilment-centre-in-haryana/articleshow/53206340.cms">ET</a> by Akhil Saxena, VP, customer fulfilment centres.

Amongst 22 fulfilment centres in 10 Indian states of Gujarat, Haryana, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/Amazon-is-planning-to-set-ups-lofts-in-Bengaluru-Heres-what-they-are/articleshow/52969211.cms">Karnataka</a>, Maharashtra, Delhi, Punjab, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, Telangana and West Bengal, this one is the largest, being spread across about 200,000 sq ft. 
 
It was earlier this month that <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/Amazon-India-ties-up-with-Vodafone-India-for-smartphones-touch-and-feel/articleshow/52829571.cms">Amazon </a>had announced its plans to expand its infrastructure by adding six more fulfilment centres, so that it can be better prepared for the<a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/Ahead-of-festive-season-AmazonIndia-invests-in-six-new-fulfillment-centres/articleshow/53112025.cms"> upcoming festive season</a>. These new centres will make Amazon’s operational storage area to 2.5 million sq ft.

Amazon has opened India's biggest fulfilment centre in Sonipat

New Delhi, Feb 7 () Amazon has infused over Rs 2,500 crore into two of its Indian businesses, Amazon Seller Services and Amazon Data Services India, according to regulatory filings. The investment comes just days after its founder and the world's richest man Jeff Bezos announced USD 1 billion investment in digitising small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in the country. An e-mail sent to the company did not elicit a response. As per regulatory documents sourced from business intelligence platform paper.vc, the board of Amazon Seller Services has allotted shares worth about Rs 2,208 crore to Amazon Corporate Holdings and Amazon.com Inc. The resolution to this effect was approved on January 24. A separate filing by Amazon Data Services India said shares worth Rs 355 crore have been allotted to A100 ROW Inc and Amazon.com Inc. This resolution was approved on January 31. Amazon had recently pumped in over Rs 1,700 crore into its payments and wholesale business units in India, signalling opportunity that the US giant sees in the country. Amazon Pay India had received Rs 1,355 crore, while Amazon Wholesale (India) allotted shares worth about Rs 360 crore. Amazon CEO Bezos who was in India last month had promised USD 1 billion (over Rs 7,000 crore) investment in India to help bring small and medium businesses online and committed to exporting USD 10 billion worth of India-made goods by 2025. The ambitious investment announcement had however courted controversy after Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal termed the fund infusion "not a favour". Goyal had later clarified that his statement had been taken out of context. India's antitrust body, the Competition Commission of India has ordered an investigation into alleged violations of competition laws by Amazon and its rival Walmart-owned Flipkart. Amazon and rival Flipkart have been pumping millions of dollars into across various operations like marketplace, infrastructure and supply chain management as well as marketing and promotion as they look to strengthen their position in the fledgling Indian e-commerce market. Despite being the largest e-commerce company on a global scale, it still lags behind Flipkart in the country. Therefore, the new infusion of capital isn’t as surprising as it is expected. The company will have to maintain its aggressive stance in the Indian market will the coming competition from Walmart. The company also invested an additional ₹1 billion ($14 million) in Amazon Retail India Pvt Ltd and another ₹35 billion ($500 million) to expand its food retail business in India. With the capital infusions combined, Amazon’s total investment over the years comes to around $4 billion. According to insights by paper.vc, investment was directed into Amazon Sellers Pvt Ltd which is the marketplace for sellers who wish to sell their products online, not only in India but internationally through the e-commerce platform. Friend or foes Initially, when Amazon came to India it made a promise of investing $2 billion (₹140 billion) in the Indian market. Come 2016, they met that target while pledging an additional $3 billion (₹210 billion) bringing to the total promised investment to $5 billion (₹350 billion). In comparison, the company’s authorised capital was a mere ₹15 billion (₹214 million) when the original pledge was made. This set the pace for the company’s growth in India. Now, with Walmart acquiring Flipkart, Amazon has a competitor with equally deep pockets and no plans of letting go of its newest acquisition anytime soon. After paying $16 billion to acquire 77% of Flipkart, Walmart stated it had plans of pumping another $2 billion into its Indian subsidiary. And all this was not without any drama. It was only on Thursday that the Competition Commission of India (CCI) finally <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/indias-competition-regulator-has-given-the-walmart-flipkart-deal-a-greenlight/articleshow/65337242.cms">greenlit</a> the deal. But, despite their differences, both Walmart and Amazon <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/amazon-walmart-seek-us-help-against-indias-new-draft-e-commerce-policy/articleshow/65228547.cms">have issues</a> with India’s Draft of the E-commerce Policy. They claim that if some of the proposals are actually implemented, the disruption to the supply chain would be immensely damaging. Reports claim that they’re also roping in the Trump administration to talk to Indian authorities about their concerns. The competition between the two companies in India, especially when they’re focusing on increasing their sales rather than their margins, has already begun to lead to uncertainty in the market. While they go head-to-head in the online space, offline retailers could be the ones who bear the brunt.

Amazon takes the fight to Walmart by investing another ₹27 billion in India

<keyword id="11032237" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="thrasio" source="Orion">Thrasio</keyword> Holdings Inc, an aggregator of private brands on <keyword id="18635" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Amazon" source="Orion">Amazon</keyword>, on Friday said it will invest Rs 3,750 crore (nearly $500 million) to acquire leading digital-first brands in India. Thrasio started its Indian innings with acquiring Lifelong Online, a leading domestic online consumer brand, for an undisclosed sum. India is one of the fastest-growing regions for Amazon's third-party marketplace, making it enticing for aggregators. "We couldn't be more excited to work with Lifelong Online and, together, take our proven model to India," said Carlos Cashman, CEO of Thrasio. "In addition to acquiring and growing digital-first businesses, we plan to participate in the 'make in India' movement by transitioning the manufacturing for some of our products to the country," Cashman said. Thrasio has acquired more than 200 brands and raised more than $3.4 billion in funding. Lifelong will now be known as "Lifelong, a Thrasio company" and will be well-positioned to engage with India's more than 750,000 sellers. "We are building a technology-first, next-generation consumer goods company," explained Bharat Kalia, CEO of Lifelong Online. Lifelong Online was founded by Atul Raheja, Varun Grover, and Kalia in 2015. "With lucrative exit options for founders, we hope to encourage even more brands and sellers to join the D2C ecosystem in India," he added. According to the most-recent list from Marketplace Pulse, adding all of the Thrasio brands together, Thrasio would be a top-5 seller on Amazon's marketplace. In fact, Thrasio estimates that 1 in 6 US households has already purchased a Thrasio product via Amazon alone. "India is a unique market with hundreds of thousands of motivated entrepreneurs," said Cashman. Founded in 2018 by Joshua Silberstein and Cashman, Thrasio has a portfolio of tens of thousands of products. "We are thrilled to provide brand owners with the opportunity to successfully sell their businesses as well as to give consumers greater access to quality products. This is a major step in our evolution and a huge opportunity for India's sellers," said Cashman. Amazon aggregator Thrasio will invest half a billion dollars in buying Indian brands

<keyword id="18635" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Amazon">Amazon</keyword> and <keyword id="80487" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="walmart">Walmart</keyword> Stores Inc will invest over $300 Mn (INR 2,000 Cr) in a bid to build their network and to gain a share in the <keyword id="922069" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-retail-market">Indian retail market</keyword>. 

	The two of the world’s largest retailers are planning to gain a commanding position by building scale through deep discounting in the Indian retail market, which is expected to cross $1 Tn by 2020.
 

	Amazon will inject Rs 1,696 crore through a rights issue into Amazon Seller Services, making it the biggest infusion of capital since entering the country three years ago. The board resolution to this effect was filed with the Registrar of Companies on Thursday. The investment takes Amazon's total investment in Amazon Seller Services in the past year to aboutRs 4,800 crore. 
 

	Walmart Stores will invest Rs 360 crore, it said in an RoC filing on Wednesday. It plans to open nearly 50 doors in India at a time when it plans to close nearly 270 stores globally. 
 India's <keyword id="2489789" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="ecommerce-market">ecommerce market</keyword> is expected to grow to $103 billion by FY20 from $26 billion, according to <keyword id="6361649" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Goldman-Sachs">Goldman Sachs</keyword>. Amazon expects India to overtake Japan, Germany and the UK to become its largest overseas market, besides becoming the quickest to reach $10 billion in gross merchandise value in the company's history, Diego Piacentini, senior vice-president for international business, had told ET in October last year. ET reported in July last year that Amazon may invest about $5 billion in India, up from $2 billion pledged previously by chief executive officer Jeff Bezos. Rivals Flipkart and Snapdeal have meanwhile raised funding from overseas investors as they seek to strengthen their own positions.

Amazon, Walmart to invest more than Rs 2,000 crore in India

BANGALORE: <keyword id="18635" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Amazon">Amazon</keyword> is preparing to launch a portal for wholesale merchants in India, the first country outside the US where such an initiative is being planned by the Seattle-based company. 
 
The wholesale portal could be launched early next year, according to two people with knowledge of the plans. 
 "The (Amazon) India team has been working on this top secret project for the past few months. Talks with potential suppliers and the hiring process have begun," said one of the sources. "It will be similar to what <keyword id="80487" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="walmart">Walmart</keyword> is doing online in India and what <keyword id="302749" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Alibaba">Alibaba</keyword> does in China." 
 The initiative could be led by Samir Kumar, who is currently director of category management, said a third source. The wholesale team will report to <keyword id="6354743" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Amazon-India">Amazon India</keyword> head Amit Agarwal. 
 
An Amazon India spokeswoman said: "As a policy, we do not comment on anything that we may or may not do in the future." Since debuting its online retail business in India last year, Amazon has grown rapidly. 
 Amazon has grown rapidly and aggressively in India, challenging Flipkart for market leadership in the country. Illustrating the scale of its ambition, founder <keyword id="191583" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Jeff-Bezos">Jeff Bezos</keyword> announced that Amazon would <keyword id="47916" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="invest">invest</keyword> $2 billion (Rs 12,000 crore) in India just a day after Flipkart said it had received $1 billion in <keyword id="6357455" type="EVENT" weightage="80" keywordseo="Funding">funding</keyword>. "It is important to note that there is no <keyword id="44528" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="FDI">FDI</keyword> restriction when it comes to online business-to-business operations," said Arvind Singhal, chairman of retail advisory firm Technopak. 
 
 The India wholesale portal will be similar to AmazonSupply, its online site in the US focused on business consumers. 
 
The India platform will also target small and medium enterprises. However, it is not clear yet whether the company will offer all categories of products under its wholesale platform. For instance, AmazonSupply does not sell apparel and other soft lines such as furnishings. AmazonSupply was launched in 2012 and is still in ‘beta’, or test mode. The site, which does not have a minimum order size, sells products ranging from office supplies to electrical equipment. 
 
Since June last year, Amazon in India has set up a network of seven warehouses across the country and has over 8,500 merchants selling products in over 28 categories on its platform. The company is estimated to be on track to reach $1 billion (Rs 6,000 crore) in sales this fiscal. One of the factors influencing decision-making at Amazon is the Chinese ecommerce group Alibaba. 
 
Sources who briefed ET on Amazon’s wholesale plans said the firm wants to quickly establish wholesale operations in India before Alibaba pays serious attention to this market. Alibaba has set up offices in India but its platform is primarily focused on connecting small and medium enterprises in India to global buyers, and not on domestic sales. 
 
Alibaba has taken the fight to Amazon in its home market by launching a portal in the US before its public offer, which could mop up over $21 billion (Rs 1.2 lakh crore). In China, Alibaba’s success has been built on the back of business-to-business transactions. 
 
In India, too, the online channel is expected to be a disruptive force in wholesale. "The online channel can bring in efficiency," said Singhal of Technopak. "There are millions of small retailers who buy from physical wholesalers, but the system is very inefficient." 
 
Others too have been drawn in by this opportunity. US retail giant Walmart has estimated that India’s wholesale market will grow to $700 billion (Rs 42.5 lakh crore) by 2020 from the current $300 billion (over Rs 18 lakh crore). Earlier this year, it launched a business-focused site bestpricewholesale.co.in for its wholesale club members in Lucknow and Hyderabad. Technopak has estimated that the retail market in India is at $525 billion (Rs 32 lakh crore) at present and will double in size by 2020. 
 
German retailer Metro’s India brick-and-mortar wholesale cash &amp; carry business has managed to carve out a space for itself in the decade that it has operated here. In 2013, it had incurred a loss of Rs 272 crore on a turnover of Rs 2,521 crore. The company runs about 15 outlets in India and plans to have 50 wholesale stores in the country by 2020.

New Delhi, Jan 15 () Traders' body CAIT on Wednesday alleged that the USD 1 billion investment announced by Amazon chief Jeff Bezos is "promotional finance" to Amazon India to crush retail trade and encourage predatory pricing and deep discounting.
Confederation Of All India Traders (CAIT), which has been opposing Bezos' visit to India, said more than 5 lakh traders supported its protests in about 300 cities, and about 5,000 trade associations participated.
The USD 1 billion investment by Bezos for small and medium businesses is not an investment, but promotional finance to Amazon India to crush retail trade and encourage his team in India to do more predatory pricing and deep discounting, and to go on violating FDI policy, CAIT Secretary General Praveen Khandelwal said. 
He termed the target of exporting USD 10 billion worth of Make in India goods by 2025 "ridiculous". 
Bezos wants to build a false and wrong narrative to show that Amazon is pro small traders, Khandelwal claimed.
Amazon.com Inc chief Jeff Bezos on Wednesday announced USD 1 billion (over Rs 7,000 crore) investment in India to help bring small and medium businesses online and committed to exporting USD 10 billion worth of India-made goods by 2025.
Before this, the online retail giant had committed USD 5.5 billion investments in India - Amazon's most important market outside of the US and a key growth driver.
