Yesterday was a big day for all tech bloggers around the world as <keyword id="6355629" type="CITY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Google">Google</keyword> took centerstage to launch the first devices based on <keyword id="6355645" type="COMPANY" weightage="80" keywordseo="android">Android</keyword> One. Needless to add, it was a big day for Indian brands- Micromax, Karbonn, and Spice too.<br />

Over the past couple of years, Micromax has managed to make a name for itself. The company is now mushrooming out in other markets and is, so far, getting good traction. However, for Karbonn, it was a day of reckoning where the world was now looking at them with a lot of interest.<br />
<br /> Also, at the event, Google announced that it was now looking at adding new partners in the Android One program and understandably so. So, amongst the Indian brands, Lava, Xolo, and Intex are going to join the party. While in international brands Acer, Asus, and <keyword id="6367990" type="CITY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Panasonic">Panasonic</keyword> will be entering the arena.<br />
<br /> It’s good to see that the Taiwanese maker <keyword id="16129" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="HTC">HTC</keyword> too will be getting its share of Android One devices. However, the one big name that was missing from the whole list was that of <keyword id="6356116" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="LG">LG</keyword>.<br />

The Korean smartphone maker has been striving hard to get its smartphone strategy right. It had made the right moves by partnering with Google for the Nexus and even topped it with its own flagship smartphone LG G2.<br />

We think it is a big opportunity missed as far as LG is concerned. Getting on with Google on the Android One plane would have helped the brand get in some serious numbers in the entry-level smartphone market. So far, LG has not been able to get any headway in the entry- and mid-level market and this could have been its big-ticket chance.<br />

Anyway, all we can say now is that it’s still not too late LG, get going and join the party.<br />

<b>Here’s An ‘Emergency’ App To Bail You Out Of Distress
Situations, But You Can Do Even More…</b>

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Telegram banned a channel on the grounds of promoting violence amid the Israel-Hamas war.</li><li>It has also restricted two of Hamas' official channels on Android and iOS devices.</li></ul><p>On October 13, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/pavel-durov-telegram-billionaire-russia-instagram-wealth-founder-dubai-lifestyle-2022-3">Pavel Durov</a>, the founder of Telegram, wondered aloud if he should ban Hamas from his messaging platform.</p><p>"Earlier this week, Hamas used Telegram to warn civilians in Ashkelon to leave the area ahead of their missile strikes," <a href="https://t.me/durov/230" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Durov wrote</a>. "Would shutting down their channel help save lives — or would it endanger more lives?"</p><p>In the end, Durov didn't have much of a choice.</p><h2>Restrictions, not bans — but rare for Telegram nonetheless</h2><p>Telegram, which is known for its message encryption and lax moderation, restricted two official Hamas channels on Android devices earlier this month. Its team attributed the block to Google, saying on October 22 that the restriction went through "because of Google Play's guidelines," <a href="https://www.jpost.com/breaking-news/article-769852" target="_blank" rel="noopener">The Jerusalem Post reported.</a></p><p>Google's policies restrict content that promotes terrorism. Hamas, which is designated a terrorist organization by many Western countries, has also been banned from Meta and X platforms.</p><p>One of the two restricted channels belongs to Hamas' militant wing, the al-Qassam Brigades. The channel was also blocked on iOS devices, but not Telegram's desktop app, Insider found.</p><p>While not outright bans, the restrictions are a rare move for Telegram, which has become a free-speech haven for groups hoping to escape government oversight. The platform is renowned for safeguarding the identities of <a href="https://www.reuters.com/article/us-hongkong-telegram-exclusive-idUSKCN1VK2NI" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Hong Kong protestors</a> and <a href="https://www.bbc.com/news/technology-60561168" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Ukrainian users</a>, but it's also notorious for hosting extremist groups like <a href="https://www.adl.org/resources/blog/telegram-latest-safe-haven-white-supremacists" target="_blank" rel="noopener">white supremacists.</a></p><p>Where the platform draws the line on bans, Durov has said, is when channels promote or call for violence. And that's where recent developments, pertaining to the Israel-Gaza war but occurring in Russia, come into play.</p><h2>Telegram takes the rare step to ban a channel</h2><p>On Monday, Durov announced the ban of Morning Dagestan, an anti-Kremlin and Islamist Telegram channel that targeted an audience in Dagestan, a Muslim-majority region in southwest Russia. It's not clear who ran the channel, which had 65,000 subscribers.</p><p>On Sunday, the channel had called for its subscribers to enter a Dagestan airport and harass passengers arriving from Tel Aviv, which it said would arrive at 7 p.m. local time.</p><p><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/dagestan-anti-jewish-airport-rampage-was-egged-on-by-telegram-channel-2023-10">Hundreds of people, incensed by the Israel-Gaza conflict, showed up</a> at the Makhachkala International Airport that day. Russian news agencies and social media say hundreds of people have stormed into the main airport in the Dagestan region and onto the landing field to protest the arrival of an airliner coming from Tel Aviv, Israel." height="2919" width="4379" msid="104885681" hostid="261" sizebytes="340776"></div><p>In a <a href="https://t.me/durov_russia/46" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Telegram post on Monday evening</a>, Durov posted a screenshot of Morning Dagestan, writing in Russian that all channels calling for violence would be blocked for violating the rules of "Telegram, Google, Apple, and the entire civilized world."</p><p>Morning Dagestan was not accessible on Telegram as of Monday evening, though several copycat channels were launched this week with thousands of subscribers each.</p><h2>Sporadic enforcement of a no-violence rule</h2><p>Telegram has been known to sporadically enforce its no-violence rule and cooperate with requests to shut down controversial channels promoting hatred and violence. These instances have often been related to some of the most high-profile issues of the moment.</p><p>For example, Telegram in 2022 <a href="https://www.dw.com/en/telegram-blocks-over-60-channels-in-germany-report/a-60752775">banned 64 accounts</a>, at Germany's behest, for spreading extremist and COVID-19 disinformation. It also <a href="https://www.nbcnews.com/storyline/paris-terror-attacks/secret-messaging-app-telegram-shuts-down-channels-related-isis-n465757" target="_blank" rel="noopener">shut down 78 ISIS-related channels</a> in 2015, after the Middle East Media Research Institute documented how Islamic State propaganda was thriving on the platform.</p><p><a href="https://t.me/durov/149">And in 2021, Durov said</a> Telegram blocked hundreds of posts promoting violence in the wake of the US Capitol riot.</p><p>But those have largely been exceptions, and channels that blatantly dox people and glorify violence are still pervasive on Telegram.</p><p><a href="https://dfrlab.org/2023/09/21/armenian-and-azerbaijani-telegram-channels-incite-violence-against-each-other/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">The Atlantic Council's Digital Forensic Research Lab</a> documented one such example in September. It found more than 70 Armenian and Azerbaijani channels that publish hate speech and incite violence against each other. While several of the accounts and posts highlighted have been taken down, many were still active as of Monday evening.</p><p>Iraqi, Burmese, Russian, and Chinese groups also actively dox hundreds of political opponents on Telegram, <a href="https://www.wired.co.uk/article/telegrams-doxing-problem">according to Wired.</a></p><h2>The impact of banning Telegram channels remains to be seen</h2><p>As for Hamas, Telegram has been under pressure for weeks to cut the militant group from its services.</p><p>Critics have cited concerns that the organization uploaded <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2023/10/10/technology/hamas-violent-videos-online.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">dozens of violent videos and images</a> to platforms including Telegram in the wake of Hamas' October 7 terrorist attacks in Israel. Before the restrictions, Hamas' official Telegram channels saw a three-fold jump in followers after the attacks, the <a href="https://dfrlab.org/2023/10/12/in-israel-hamas-conflict-social-media-become-tools-of-propaganda-and-disinformation/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Digital Forensic Research Lab reported.</a></p><p>Notably, Hamas channels are not the only ones spreading content related to the October 7 attacks, and some of those channels are still available on the platform. The channel South First Responders, for example, has posted at least three dashcam and security camera clips of deliberate killings on October 7 that were verified by the <a href="https://www.hrw.org/news/2023/10/18/israel/palestine-videos-hamas-led-attacks-verified" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Human Rights' Watch.</a> The channel is run by an Israeli volunteer group dedicated to publishing footage of the attacks.</p><p>And whether the Android and iOS restrictions will truly curb Hamas on Telegram remains to be seen. A channel for Hamas' spokesperson Abu Obaida is active and has more than 620,000 subscribers. </p><p>Several clone accounts for the al-Qassam Brigades and Hamas were also launched in October, some of which have been cross-posted by official channels. At least two of these channels, posting al-Qassam Brigades content, have over 300,000 subscribers a piece, compared to nearly 650,000 on the militant wing's official and now-restricted channel.</p><p>Gaza Now, which was identified by <a href="https://dfrlab.org/2023/10/12/in-israel-hamas-conflict-social-media-become-tools-of-propaganda-and-disinformation/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">DFRLab</a>, <a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2023/10/25/israel-hamas-telegram-removes-hamas-channels-on-android.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">CNBC</a>, and <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/technology/2023/10/18/hamas-social-media-terror/">The Washington Post</a> as a Hamas-linked channel, continues to stay active with updates on victims of air strikes. It had 1.4 million subscribers when The Post reported on the channel on October 18, and has grown to 1.9 million subscribers since.</p><p>But it's also difficult to determine which Hamas-linked organizations speak for the militant group, and whether social media platforms will take issue with them. For example, the Palestinian Health Authority is run by Hamas, but has largely been the only source for Palestinian casualties in Gaza.</p><p>Telegram, Google, and Apple did not immediately respond to requests for comment from Insider sent outside regular business hours.</p>

<ul class="summary-list"><li>The <keyword id="15350" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="Army">Army</keyword> has put out several videos of training seen through its new <keyword id="11273967" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="envg-b">ENVG-B</keyword> night-vision goggles.</li><li>One wild-looking video shows soldiers firing M777 Howitzers.</li><li>An earlier video shows soldiers firing machine guns and mortars as seen through the goggles.</li></ul><p>The US Army has put out several videos in recent weeks showing the field of battle through the service's new night-vision goggles, including one showing <keyword id="6479635" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="artillery">artillery</keyword> fire.</p><p>The most recent video shows soldiers from 2nd Battalion, 17th Field Artillery, which is assigned to the 2nd Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 7th Infantry Division, firing M777 Howitzers at Yakima Training Center in Washington state.</p><p>The scenes in the video, which look like something straight out of a video game, were shot through the Army's new Enhanced <keyword id="938360" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="night-vision-goggles">Night Vision Goggles</keyword> - Binocular (ENVG-B).</p><p>An earlier video showed, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/video-shows-battlefield-through-us-armys-new-night-vision-goggles-2021-4">through the lenses of the ENVG-B system</a>, soldiers from 4th Battalion, 23rd Infantry Regiment, 2nd Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 7th Infantry Division, conducting a platoon live-fire exercise including mortar and machine-gun fire.</p><p>The ENVG-B is an Elbit Systems of America product that the Army started fielding in fall 2019 at Fort Riley in Kansas as a replacement for the older monocular PVS-14 night vision devices.</p><p>Moving away from the traditional green of older night-vision systems, the newer ENVG-B offers a clearer picture of the battlespace.</p><div type="image" title="ENVG-B" height="561" width="748" msid="82724550" hostid="261"></div><p>Insider recently had the opportunity to test-out the helmet-mounted binocular goggles equipped with image intensified white phosphor tubes and thermal imaging, among other improvements to legacy night-vision devices.</p><p>In addition to the I2 <keyword id="6355118" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="technology">technology</keyword> and thermal, the goggles also offer an outline mode, which can be seen in the recent videos, and an augmented-reality overlay for better situational awareness.</p><div type="image" title="Some of the different view modes for the ENVG-B" height="750" width="1334" msid="82724551" hostid="261"></div><p>In the heads-up display, soldiers can see a compass and other digital tools, such as force tracking.</p><p>Using the Android Tactical Assault Kit (ATAK) software application, troops can mark friendly forces with a blue marker, enemy forces with a red marker, and unidentifiable persons or objects with a question mark.</p><p>John Ennis, a member of the Elbit Systems product development team, told a handful of reporters recently that "if you saw something on the side of the road that you thought was an IED or something, you could actually mark it [and] broadcast it out to your team."</p><p>The markers are visible to all soldiers connected to the network on a personal Nett Warrior device on their vest and in their advanced night-vision goggles in an augmented-reality space. US soldiers can customize how much or little they see.</p><div type="image" title="Vest with Nett Warrior device equipped with ATAK at Elbit Systems" height="3024" width="4032" msid="82724552" hostid="261"></div><p>The goggles can connect wirelessly to a soldier's rifle through the Family of Weapon Sights-Individual for rapid target acquisition and more accurate shooting, even from the hip and around corners.</p><p>With a picture-in-picture setup in the heads-up display, soldiers can simultaneously see what is in front of them and wherever their weapon is aiming.</p><div type="image" title="ENVG-B and mock weapon equipped with FWS-I at Elbit Systems" height="2274" width="3024" msid="82724553" hostid="261"></div><p>Soldiers can also transmit live video from unmanned aerial systems directly into the heads-up display.</p><p>One soldier who had the opportunity to try out the ENVG-B a couple of years ago described it as an "insane game changer," <a href="https://www.army.mil/article/226912/soldier_lethality_team_delivers_big_win_for_afc">stating in a 2019 Army release that</a> "nothing else offers these kinds of capabilities."</p><p>Although this technology is impressive, higher-end threats posed by near-peer adversaries like China and Russia, such as electronic warfare threats, mean that US soldiers have to be ready to go back to the basics if necessary.</p><div type="image" title="Artillery fire through the lenses of the ENVG-B" height="999" width="1726" msid="82724555" hostid="261"></div><p>"All this technology is great," Jeff Lee, a member of the Elbit Systems business development team with a background in special operations, said recently.</p><p>"We always want to be at the cutting edge all the time," he continued, "but we always also have to remember our roots and be able to do things without all those capabilities in case it gets taken away."</p><p>If the advanced ENVG-B features were ever suddenly not available on the battlefield, soldiers could still use the base night-vision capabilities.</p>

And while the Army has yet to field this tech, it is already thinking about how to build on it.</li><li><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/prime?module=article&amp;area=summary">Click here for more BI Prime stories</a>.</li></ul><p>The US Army is changing the way it looks at equipping soldiers for battle, shifting from simply adding more and more gear to integrating systems, and one of the best examples is what the service is doing with its new night-vision goggles.</p><p>With the new goggles, the Army didn't just acquire new night-vision technology. It also integrated other new technologies such as connected weapon sights that turn any soldier into a top marksmen and network devices that allow for the sharing of data across augmented reality platforms.</p><p>And down the road, the service intends to incorporate the new squad-level mini-drones into the mix while moving everything into a plug-and-play open architecture that will allow for the addition of new capabilities as technology advances.</p><p>"For years, dismounted Soldiers have been overburdened by equipment which, while highly effective, often isn't integrated with other equipment," Brig. Gen. Anthony Potts, Program Executive Office Soldier, explained in August.</p><p>That's changing.</p><p>"Adding more does not help, but integrating is really what can drive progress," Maj. John Nikiforakis, a former Army platoon leader who serves as the Assistant Product Manager for the new Enhanced Night Vision Goggles - Binocular (ENVG-B) program at PEO Soldier, told Business Insider.</p><p>"We're not fielding just one piece at a time anymore. We are trying to field whole sets of equipment that enable that squad to be more lethal," he added, explaining that while all these systems can be used individually, "when you put them all together, that is when you get the most bang for your buck."</p><h3><strong>Enhanced Night Vision Goggles - Binocular (ENVG-B)</strong></h3><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Patrick Ferraris/PEO Soldier</span></p><p class="caption">A soldier with the ENVG-B during a touchpoint exercise this past summer</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>In late September, soldiers with the 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division at Fort Riley, Kansas became the first to get their hands on L3's ENVG-B.</p><p>A replacement for the AN/PVS-14 monocular night vision device (MNVD) that has been in use for nearly two decades, "the ENVG-B is the most advanced night-vision goggles fielded to conventional forces to date," Nikiforakis said. "There's nothing even close to it."</p><p>The new night-vision goggles offer improved situational awareness and depth perception for greater mobility, high resolution white phosphor tubes (a significant improvement over the green phosphor tubes), and thermal imaging for improved target recognition in the face of various battlefield obscurrants.</p><p>The new ENVG-B can be mounted on the Integrated Head Protection System (IHPS), a Ceradyne Inc. product developed as a replacement for the Enhanced Combat Helmet. It was first fielded earlier this year to the 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division at Fort Bragg, North Carolina.</p><h3><strong>Family of Weapon Sights - Individual (FWS-I)</strong></h3><p><strong><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Courtesy of PEO Soldier</span></p><p class="caption">Soldier entering a room with the ENVG-B and the FWS-I</p></div><p></p></div></div></strong></p><p>The ENVG-B is wirelessly connected to BAE System's FWS-I, displaying the weapon sight reticle (crosshairs) in the goggles so that the soldier can fire from the hip or around a corner or over a barrier accurately without looking. This development was fielded along with the ENVG-B in September.</p><p><em><strong>Read more: </strong><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/troops-shoot-like-never-before-with-new-night-vision-goggles-2019-9">A Marine tore up distant targets while lying on his back and shooting backwards over his shoulder with the help of this new weapons tech</a></em></p><p>Not only does the FWS-I allow for rapid target acquisition and reduce exposure to enemy fire - because a soldier doesn't need to expose themself to get a visual around a corner or obstruction - but it has dramatically improved soldier marksmanship.</p><p>Brig. Gen. Dave Hodne, the director of the Army's Soldier Lethality Cross-Functional Team, told reporters last October that he "can't imagine, right now, any future sighting system that will not have that kind of capability."</p><p>The FWS-I, like the ENVG-B, runs on AA batteries, but the Army is in the process of developing a standardized tethered battery for improved performance.</p><h3><strong>Nett Warrior</strong></h3><p><strong><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>US Army/JRTC Public Affairs</span></p><p class="caption">2nd Security Force Assistance Brigade training on new Integrated Tactical Network capabilities using the improved Nett Warrior end-user device</p></div><p></p></div></div></strong></p><p>The ENVG-B has the ability to connect to the Android Tactical Assault Kit (ATAK) software on the Samsung Nett Warrior end-user device carried by soldiers for augmented reality capabilities aimed at providing better squad-level performance.</p><p>Using the Nett Warrior device, which was first introduced a few years ago, soldiers can pre-plot targets, pre-plot friendly forces, and connect with other service members integrated into the tactical network.</p><p>Important mission points and objectives, such as a target house, can be digitally marked on a map on the Nett Warrior device and then broadcast into a soldier's field of view in their goggles, and all connected squad members can see the same thing.</p><p>This capability was actually tested successfully back in April at Fort Drum with the 10th Mountain Division.</p><p>The soldiers who received the ENVG-B and FWS-I in September do not currently have this ability, but by the end of the year, the Army will have soldiers with full capability sets.</p><h3><strong>Soldier Borne Sensor (SBS)</strong></h3><p><strong><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span><a href="https://www.flir.com/press-tools/image-gallery/product-imagery/">FLIR Systems</a></span></p><p class="caption">FLIR Black Hornet III</p></div><p></p></div></div></strong></p><p>A next step for the Army may be connecting the FLIR Black Hornet personal reconnaissance drones, which were fielded as part of the Soldier Borne Sensor (SBS) program, to soldiers in the 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division at Fort Bragg, North Carolina a few months ago, to the ENVG-B so that soldiers can see live video from these tiny unmanned assets in their goggles.</p><p><strong>Read more: </strong><em><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/army-night-vision-future-goggles-rifles-drones-2019-10">The US Army wants to combine its powerful new night-vision goggles and its new pocket-sized spy drones so soldiers can see the battlefield like never before</a></em></p><p>While there is currently no set timeline on fielding this technology, an attempt by PEO Soldier to explore the art of the possible, the Army has managed to successfully link the two systems.</p><p>"If you were to take it out today and use it, you could see a video feed from the camera on the SBS drone in your night vision goggles without issue," Kevin Brown, the Assistant Program Manager for SBS at PEO Soldier, told Business Insider.</p><p>This technology works by sending a wireless signal from the SBS drone to the wireless antenna on the ENVG-B, which then relays the data to the Nett Warrior device. The end-user device then broadcasts the video feed in the goggles in real time. The video the drone operator sees can also be shared wirelessly with every connected member in the squad.</p><h3><strong>What's next?</strong></h3><p><strong><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Patrick Ferraris/PEO Soldier</span></p><p class="caption">A New Hampshire Army National Guard soldier shows her team the route they will take during an ENVG-B touchpoint exercise</p></div><p></p></div></div></strong></p><p>The Army doesn't want to just stop there though.</p><p>"The fact that the squad leader can see what the SBS drone sees with their ENVG-B is outstanding," Nikiforakis told Business Insider. "But how come the headquarters element can't see the same feed? How come that same feed can't be sent forward to attack aviation?</p><p>"That interconnectivity, the ability to send data across the battlefield," he said, "that is where we should be going. Me seeing one thing is great, but what if I can bring in enablers to enhance that lethality and to really not fight a fair fight."</p><p>The service's ambitions here play directly into the larger plans for every sensor-every shooter connectivity for multi-domain operations that the Army, as well as other services, have been looking at more closely as they prepare for high-end warfare against near-peer threats.</p><p>The Army is also pursuing an Adaptive Squad Architecture (ASA) system, something loosely akin to the open architecture for app development for smart phones and related products, to permit the seamless integration of new technologies as they become available to the warfighter.</p><p>PEO Soldier has plans to eventually integrate the ENVG-B and its affiliated systems into the ASA.</p>    <div class="margin-top">        <h3>NOW WATCH: <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/what-are-heel-spurs-donald-trump-vietnam-deferments-jacqueline-sutera-2017-8">A podiatrist explains heel spurs, the medical condition Trump said earned him a medical deferment from Vietnam</a></h3>        <div>                    </div>    </div>
