Kolkata, May 5 () A day after a BSF driver who escorted a central team tested positive for COVID-19, five other troopers attached to the South Bengal frontier were found infected with the disease, the paramilitary force said.Out of these five positive cases, three were engaged in escort duties of the Inter-Ministerial Central Team (IMCT), officials said."Five more personnel were found to be positive. Their reports came late in the evening. They have been admitted to M R Bangur hospital," a senior BSF official of South Bengal Frontier said.The contact-tracing exercise has started and some have been sent on quarantine, the official said. According to senior officials of BSF South Bengal Frontier, the troops have been on high alert and efforts are on to ensure that the Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) and other guidelines are strictly followed by the troopers of the border-guarding force. "After the driver of one of the escort cars was found positive, we sent him at an isolation facility and more than 51 personnel with whom he came in contact have been sent on quarantine. "We have also tested more than 25 people so far, including other drivers of the escort team. None of them found to be positive. But still, all of them have been kept on quarantine as a precautionary measure. The process of testing is on ," a senior BSF officer said.The senior officer said the BSF was on high alert since the beginning of the pandemic. And after the first case in the South Bengal frontier was reported on Monday night, senior officers have been asked to ensure that the troops follow the SOP and other precautionary measures.The officer said the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has been informed about the BSF constable's infection. West Bengal's ruling Trinamool Congress has extend "moral support" to the nationwide strike and in solidarity will stage sit-ins in various parts of the state for the next three days. The state's incumbent formation, however, said that it would not enforce the strike called by the farmers as the party is against bandh culture. "We support the issues raised by the farmers. We will hold protest programmes and sit-in demonstrations. The farmers have our moral support," veteran Trinamool Congress MP Sougata Roy said. Making the appeal on behalf of 16 Left and associate parties, West Bengal Left Front (LF) chairman Biman Bose already urged the people of the state to make Bharat Bandh a grand success. A rally is likely to be organised by 16 Left and associate parties from Entally market at 11 a.m. which would be attended by Biman Bose, Surya Kanta Mishra and many senior CPI-M leaders. In support of the shutdown, Left organisations and the Congress jointly took out a rally this morning in Birbhum's Rampurhat area. In Bankura district, the farmers staged a sit-in demonstration near Govindonagar while transport workers in the district suspended daily public transport services there in solidarity with the farmers. In Jalpaiguri's Dhupguri area, LF-backed protesters also disrupted public transport services in support of the 'Bharat Bandh'. Meanwhile, the Centre has issued an advisory directing all the states governments and Union Territories to tighten security and ensure peace is maintained throughout the country during the 'Bharat Bandh'. The farmer leaders also said that no one should be forced to participate in the shutdown, adding it is a four-hour symbolic bandh for an ideological cause. His samples were sent for examinationshortly thereafter.His father, when contacted by , said the boy hadbeen suffering from breathing problems since birth and had norecent travel history."Ours is a small family of four and no one is ill.It's surprising and shocking that my son got infected," thefather, a bank employee, said.A senior official at the ICH said the boy's parentswere told to take him to MR Bangur hospital on Friday morningafter he tested positive for the disease. His nose and throatswabs were sent to the Tata Medical Centre in Rajarhat forexamination.The 34-year-old nurse, who was also found to havecontracted the disease, is a resident of Jibantala in South 24Parganas, ICH sources said.The mother of a six-year-old has been working at theneo-natal unit of the ICH.All 10 nurses, who are down with fever, are hercolleagues at the unit, sources said.A nurse at the facility, speaking on the condition ofanonymity, complained that medical workers, who chose to stayback at the hospital amid the lockdown, were living in crampedquarters without proper protection."At least 26 of us are putting up in a cramped room atthe hospital. We have not been given any mask or protectivegear. We dont know what's in store for us. We are quitescared," she said.Nobody from the hospital administration wasimmediately available for comments.Meanwhile, over 35 health workers, including doctorsat the Sagar Dutta Medical College and Hospital, have beenplaced under quarantine after two of their colleagues testedpositive for the disease, health department officials said. (Eds: Adding more inputs)Kolkata, May 11 () An association of doctors inWest Bengal has shot off letters to the Union health ministryand Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, making a case for a relookat the revised policy for discharge of coronavirus patientsand setting up dedicated critical care units in COVID-19hospitals of the state.Noting that different strains of the coronavirus areprevailing across the country with non-identical morbidity andmortality profile, the Left-backed Association of HealthService Doctors (AHSD) said in its missive to Union healthminister Harsh Vardhan that the Centre's discharge guidelinescannot be uniformly exercised everywhere.The revised discharge policy for COVID-19 casesannounced by the ministry in consulation with the IndianCouncil of Medical Research (ICMR) had said coronavirus-infected patients developing severe illness or havingcompromised immunity will have to test negative through thereverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR)before being discharged by a hospital. Reports are coming that not enoughspace is available for even properly keeping the corpses," theletter said.While "lack of infrastructure and human resources" inthe district-level COVID-19 hospitals is worrying, "The CCUfor serious patients has not been developed in most of thehospitals except Beleghata ID and MR Bangur Hospital. Thenumber of beds in these two hospitals is limited, too," thegovernment service doctors' body said.The association said that non-COVID services inhospitals have almost collapsed with OPDs, cancer and dialysistreatment having "practically stopped" or continuing "on ameagre scale."The AHSD, in its letter to the Union health ministry,added that "it has been experienced that coronavirus patientswith mild symptoms or no symptoms are not encouraged for homeisolation by their family and close relatives".
