Mathematician <keyword id="6359545" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Anand-Kumar">Anand Kumar</keyword>'s 'Super 30' programme which has been seeing stellar performances by its students in <keyword id="3179424" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="IIT-exams">IIT exams</keyword> for years now, is now going beyond Bihar. It is going to be launched in Bhubaneshwar to train 30 meritorious students for IIT-JEE. Super 30 founder Anand Kumar has announced today that he has plans to start the programme here. “Every year one or two students from Odisha come and join the super 30 group and give good results. So, we are planning to start the programme here,” said Kumar. 30 Class 10 pass outs and 30 Plus II students have been selected for the programme. Super 30 was started in Patna (Bihar) in 2002, It will be organised by Adyant Plus II Science College in Bhubaneshwar. A screening test will be conducted on July 2 to select the best students.

The government today set the ball rolling on its <keyword id="6377036" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="smart-cities">Smart Cities</keyword> plan by announcing the first list of 20 cities, which included five capital cities, to be developed as Smart Cities. 
 
Bhubaneswar in Odisha topped the city challenge competition. 
 <keyword id="2094" type="COMPANY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Pune">Pune</keyword> and <keyword id="6354779" type="COMPANY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Jaipur">Jaipur</keyword> were second and third. 
 
The government has also offered a fast track window for the next rejected 23 cities based on their ranks to upgrade their proposals and submit them by April 15, 2016 for evaluation. 
 
The Smart City Challenge Competition was as rigorous and demanding as the civil services examination conducted by UPSC," said urban development minister Venkaiah Naidu, announcing the 20 names. 
 Apart from Bhubaneswar, Pune and Jaipur, the other cities include <keyword id="6359081" type="CITY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Surat">Surat</keyword> and Ahmedabad in Gujarat, Kochi in Kerala, Bhopal, Jabalpur and Indore in Madhya Pradesh, Visakhapatnam and Kakinada in Andhra Pradesh, Solapur in Maharashtra, Davanagere and Belagavi in Karnataka, the New Delhi Municipal Council in Delhi, Chennai and Coimbatore in Tamil Nadu, Udaipur in Rajasthan, Guwahati in Assam and Ludhiana in Punjab. 
 
A total investment of Rs 50,802 crore has been proposed in these 20 cities and towns during a five year period, of which, Rs 38,693 crore will be spent on area development and Rs 12,109 crore on a total of 56 pan-city solutions. 
 
"It is heartening to note that New Delhi's smart city proposal has been shortlisted in the first 20 list of cities to be funded. We are confident that this announcement will further accelerate the transformation of cities into smart cities and will witness very significant investments coming in," said Jaijit Bhattacharya, partner, cities and innovation at KPMG. 
 
Anshuman Magazine, chairman and managing director of property consultancy CBRE South Asia said, "While this initiative will involve large-scale retrofitting as well as redevelopment, these cities could become showcases of urban infrastructure development, encouraging others to follow suit. Going forward the success will rest on the effective implementation of the development of these smart cities." 
 
A total area of 26,735 acres will be taken up for improvements in these 20 cities including redevelopment of 425 acres in Bhopal (350 acres) and Ahmedabad (75 acres). 
 
Prakash Chandraker, vice-president and managing director-energy business at Schneider Electric India said, "Not only will these cities have enhanced basic infrastructure but they will also offer opportunities in efficient urban mobility, waste management , IT connectivity, e-governance and citizen participation. We are extremely positive about this development and excited about the huge change it will bring in its wake." 
 
These 20 cities account for 3.54 crore people with city-wise population ranging from 2.58 lakh (New Delhi Municipal Council) to 55.78 lakh (Ahmedabad).Five cities have a population of below 5 lakh each, 4 in the range of 5-10 lakh, 6 in the range of 10-25 lakh, 4 in between 25 and 50 lakh and only one city (Ahmedabad) with more than 50 lakh.

Bhubaneshwar, Pune and Jaipur top the first list of 20 smart cities

New Delhi, Jan 21 () In a first, state-owned gas utility GAIL India Ltd is ferrying imported LNG in trucks from Gujarat coast to Bhubaneshwar in Odisha as part of a government push for a gas-based economy to reduce emission and carbon footprint.
With gas pipelines yet to reach most parts of eastern India, GAIL has hired specialised cryogenic bullet trucks to transport imported liquefied natural gas from Dahej in Gujarat to Bhubaneshwar, where it is used as CNG to fuel automobiles and piped gas as cooking fuel in kitchens, company Chairman and Managing Director Ashutosh Karnatak said.
LNG is environment-friendly natural gas turned into liquid at minus 160-degree Celsius for ease of transportation in ships and trucks.
"We started transporting LNG through trucks from Dahej to Bhubaneshwar and have broken-even on the business," he told here.
It takes about a week for the LNG truck to move from west coast to the east and on reaching Bhubaneshwar LNG is regasified or converted back into its gaseous state at an LNG Satellite Station, which was set up at a cost of Rs 10 crore. Following regasification, gas is moved in cascades to CNG dispensing stations and piped natural gas fuelling points.
Gas so supplied is cheaper than alternate fuels such as diesel. LNG can also be used as a fuel directly in trucks and buses but there are only a handful of vehicles currently operating in the country using such fuel.
"Gas is a happy fuel. It not just cuts vehicular emissions (caused by use of liquid fuels such as diesel) but also is an environment-friendly replacement for coal," he said.
The government is targeting raising the share of natural gas in India's energy basket to 15 per cent by 2030 from the current 6.2 per cent.
Karnatak said the use of natural gas for generating power and producing fertilizers as well as fuel in steel and aluminum plants, besides city gas operations such as CNG to automobiles and piped cooking gas to households can help achieve the target.
Globally, natural gas constitutes 24 per cent of primary energy consumption. In Gujarat, the share of natural gas in its energy basket is 25-26 per cent because of a network of pipelines that takes the fuel from import or production source to consumption points.
Gas pipelines in India are presently concentrated in west and north, and GAIL is now laying new lines to the east, north-east, and south.
It will complete the ambitious Pradhan Mantri Urja Ganga project, involving laying of a 2,655 km pipeline from Jagdishpur in Uttar Pradesh to Haldia in West Bengal, Bokaro in Jharkhand and Dhamra in Odisha by the year-end, he said, adding a pipeline in the south will also be expedited.
Karnatak said in absence of a national gas pipeline grid, transporting LNG through trucks has become a viable option.
"There has been demand from city gas operators in places such as Bhopal and its neighboring Mandideep, Indore, and Mangalore, where there are no pipelines to take gas, for supplying the fuel in LNG trucks," he said.
The government is planning a network of LNG fuelling stations along the 6,000-km golden quadrilateral highways connecting the four metros, he added.
GAIL is putting together a plan and persuading city gas distributors, gas suppliers, financiers, fleet owners, and truck manufacturers to help build an ecosystem for LNG-fuelled vehicles in the country.
"As many as 24 locations have been identified to set up LNG fuelling stations," he said, adding trucks and buses can ply up to 800/1,000 km on a full-tank of LNG.

GAIL ferries LNG in trucks over 1,700 km to fuel gas demand in east

The <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Telecom+Regulatory+Authority+of+India">Telecom Regulatory Authority of India</a> will analyze call drop data from its recent drive through testing and ‘take appropriate action, Chairman <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=R+S+Sharma">R S Sharma</a> said. 
 
The regulator will conduct its next drive in April, and more cities will be covered in the second round. 
 
The regulator posted service quality results from drive through in seven cities showing telcos had failed the random drive tests in Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Pune, Surat, Indore and Bhubaneshwar.

New Delhi, May 11 () The MSME Ministry on Monday said its three technology centres are producing critical parts of machines which give test results of COVID-19 in less than one hour.The centres of Bhubaneshwar, Jamshedpur and Kolkata are manufacturing critical parts of Real Time Quantitative Micro PCR System for AMTZ, Vishakhapatnam, a machine that can give COVID 19 test results in less than 1 hour. Normally test result takes minimum 24 hours."These machines are compact and may be taken for testing Anywhere, Anytime, Real-time. The teams of the Technology Centers are working in 2/3 shifts to supply components for 600 Testing machines," an official statement said. As many as 150 Testing Machine components have already been supplied to AMTZ. The stainless steel components having an accuracy of 5 micron are being manufactured on the best machines of the world, the statement added. RSN MRMR

The service provider said Jio True 5G was rolling out at a rapid pace and was the only 5G service to be present in majority of these cities, providing Jio users transformational benefits of technology. Jio in a statement said the launch strengthens Jio True 5G coverage in Madhya Pradesh, close to the unveiling of coveted events like Pravasi Bharatiya Divas and Invest MP - Global Investor Summit at Indore. With it, Reliance Jio said it became the first and the only operator in Madhya Pradesh to launch 5G services across all large cities of Madhya Pradesh including Bhopal and Indore. Jio is also the only operator to launch 5G services in Ludhiana, thereby rapidly strengthening its True 5G coverage in Punjab, which was launched last week, according to the statement. The company said its users in these cities would be invited to the Jio Welcome Offer, to experience unlimited data at more than 1 (gigabit per second) Gbps speeds, at no additional cost, starting from Friday. A Jio spokesperson said, "We are happy to announce the launch of Jio True 5G in four more cities. Jio is the operator of choice for users in Madhya Pradesh, West Bengal and Punjab and the most loved technology brand, and this launch is a testament to Jio's continued commitment to the people of these states." According to a company, Jio launched fifth-generation mobile system (5G) services Delhi, Mumbai, Varanasi and Kolkata on October 4 this year while it was launched in Nathdwara and Chennai on October 22. It also mentioned the service provider launched 5G services in Bengaluru and Hyderabad on November 10 while it was launched in Gurugram, Noida, Ghaziabad and Faridabad on the following day. Pune had access to Jio 5G services on November 23 while 33 districts of Gujarat had the services on November 25. Jio 5G services are now available across 72 Indian cities

Cabinet Secretary P K Sinha today interacted with the municipal commissioners of 97 cities included in the Smart Cities Mission and chief secretaries of all states and Union territories on the implementation of the programme and asked them to focus on resource mobilisation. 
 Complimenting the 20 winners of the first round of <keyword id="513113" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="smart-city">Smart City</keyword> Challenge Competition, he said it said was fiercely contested based on comprehensive evaluation criteria. 
Highlighting the importance and urgency being accorded by the government to Smart City Mission, Sinha, in a video conference here, stressed that the urban sector has emerged as a major contributor of economic activity. 
 
He said that given the limitations of central and state governments in terms of resources, Mission Cities should focus more on other means of resource mobilization like convergence of various schemes, rationalization of user charges, an Urban Development Ministry spokesperson said. 
 
The Cabinet Secretary said those who could not make it to the first list announced yesterday need not be disappointed as they get two more opportunities to compete in the next few months. 
 The Municipal Commissioner of <keyword id="58537" type="CITY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Bhubaneshwar">Bhubaneshwar</keyword>, which topped the list of 20 winners, informed the Cabinet Secretary that sustainable urban planning, developing sound economic ecosystem and credible <keyword id="25456" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="financial-planning">financial planning</keyword> through city-level infrastructure development fund were the strong points of their proposal. 
 The Municipal Commissioner of <keyword id="2094" type="COMPANY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Pune">Pune</keyword>, which came in second, said focus on quality of life in the city, creation of qualitative economic infrastructure as a part of a 15 year master plan and sustainability features were the core strengths of the city's proposal. 
 
Sinha informed the 23 states and Union territories, which were not represented in the first list, that they could participate in fast-track competition by submitting upgraded smart city proposals of one top ranked city in each state and UT by April 15, 2016. 
 
Most of the cities who could not make to the winners list informed the Cabinet Secretary that preparation of the proposals and participation in the competition was a huge learning experience and they were determined to improve upon their proposals by working on the deficiencies. 
 
Some of them admitted to possible inadequacies with respect to certain parameters like implementation frame work, credibility of financing plans and sustainable urban planning.

"His family is a broken one. His father had deserted him at a very young age. His mother works as a servant at various places and is able to manage the family. She has sacrificed a lot to ensure that her children are brought up in a proper way. Chandan coming from a poor family stands as a sign of bravery because against all odds, he has proved his talent," said Jayadev. 
 
 
 
According to him, Chandan was spotted when he was very young due to his talent and has been training with him for the last four years- with the past year consisting of some rigorous training akin to the ones seen in international clubs. 
 
That’s not all. At 11 years old, Chandan is also the youngest player to be selected for the academy. 
 
“The selection criteria says that the age should be between 14 to 16 and being an 11-year-old kid he was not allowed but we asked them to give him a chance, he surprised everyone,” stated Jayadev. 
 
One can only hope that the sky is the limit for this young genius.

New Delhi, Jan 9 () The Indo-Canadian Business Chamber and Air Canada on Thursday announced 'Brand Canada', a 10-city roadshow in India supported by the Trade Commissioner Service of the Government of Canada.
 The initiative will see Canadian provinces and companies travel to Indian cities between January and March in an effort to bring both countries closer through investment and business opportunities.
 "India and Canada are natural partners with mutual priorities and policy initiatives. While the two countries have a busy trade corridor, there is still untapped potential in the tier-II cities of India. As part of our continuous efforts to enhance trade and investment, the primary objective is to take the Canada story and the economic brand to the interior parts of India," said Nadira Hamid, chief executive officer, Indo-Canadian Business Chamber.
 Andrew Smith, minister (commercial), High Commission of Canada in India, said, under 'Modi 2.0', India intends to double its economy to USD 5 trillion by 2025.
 The cities of India will become economic powerhouses to help propel India to achieve that USD 5 trillion goal and partnering with Canadian businesses will help the country achieve that, he added.
 The first event is scheduled for January 13, 2020, in Gurugram and will move to cities like Indore, Jaipur, Aurangabad, Pune, Baroda, Bhubaneshwar, Ludhiana and Mysore. It will conclude on March 27 in Visakhapatnam.

Mumbai, Mar 28 () National carrier Air India and its regional arm Alliance Air are operating a host of cargo charter flights -- mostly with medical equipment and medicines -- on several routes on Saturday, an Air India spokesperson said.The flights are being operated with a mix of Boeing 787, A320 and regional jets ATRs, he said.On Friday, a civil aviation ministry announced the setting up of an air cargo management group to move essential commodities across the country, which is lockdown to prevent the spread of coronavirus.Delhi-Mumbai-Delhi, Delhi-Imphal-Delhi, Delhi-Raipur-Bhubaneshwar-Delhi, Kolkata-Agartala-Kolkata and Mumbai-Pune-Raipur-Mumbai are the routes where these flighst are being operated, the spokesperson said.Air India has deployed its flagship aircraft Boeing 787-8 (Dreamliner) for Delhi-Mumbai flights, and A320 for Imphal flights, he said, adding the rest of the routes are being operated with Tray Retrieval System (ATRS).The country is under a 21-day lockdown from March 25 to curb the spread of the coronavirus and all domestic and international commercial passenger flights have been suspended for this period.On Friday also, essential items especially medicine and ICMR kits were transported from Delhi to Aizawl, Dibrugarh, Kolkata and Hyderabad on Friday and another flight transported essential items from Mumbai to Pune, Bengaluru and Trivandrum the same day, a civil aviation ministry official had said earlier.Besides, a third batch of air cargo carried essential items from Delhi to Pune and ICMR kits from Pune to Patna. AI operating cargo flights to move medicines, medical equipment on Saturday

The US is keen on providing technological support to India’s Smart City initiative. 
 
In this regard, the US wants to seek opportunities in all the proposed 100 smart city projects. 
 US Deputy Secretary of Commerce Bruce Andrews, who is on a five-day India visit and leading a delegation of 18 US companies on a <keyword id="6377036" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="smart-cities">Smart Cities</keyword> Infrastructure Business Development Mission., said that the US can be a "valuable partner" for India in providing sustainable solutions for Smart City initiative. 
 
Andrews said the delegation comprising 18 US firms have come to meet both policy makers and Indian businesses and would showcase the great technologies that provide great value and potential for India. 
 
"We believe that US can be a very valuable partner in helping India to develop sustainable economy," Andrews said, adding that there are substantial business opportunities for the US companies in India's smart city projects. 
 
US Trade and Development Agency (USTDA) Director Leocadia Zak said the US has helped in master planning of Visakhapatnam smart city and is provided technical support to Allahabad and Ajmer. 
 
"This is the beginning of the process. Our efforts are not limited to three cities. US businesses have the technological solutions which will be helpful across India," Andrews said. 
 
The government had recently announced the first batch of 20 smart cities from 11 states and Delhi. 
 
Apart from Bhubaneshwar, the cities in the first batch are Pune, Ahmedabad, Chennai, Bhopal, NDMC area of Delhi, Jaipur, Surat, Kochi, Jabalpur, Visakhapatnam, Solapur, Davanagere, Indore, Coimbatore, Kakinada, Belagavi, Udaipur, Guwahati and Ludhiana.
