Delhi International Airport emerges as world's second safest airport amid coronavirus pandemic

<ul class="summary-list"><li><keyword id="13645969" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="airports-council-international" source="Orion">Airports Council International</keyword> revealed the top 10 <keyword id="13645970" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="busiest-airports" source="Orion">busiest airports</keyword> in the world, with eight being in the US.</li><li><keyword id="12412329" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="hartsfield-jackson-atlanta-international-airport" source="Orion">Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport</keyword> reclaimed the number one spot after temporarily losing it in 2020.</li></ul><p>The US is now home to eight of the 10 busiest <keyword id="11921290" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="airports" source="Orion">airports</keyword> in the world, according to <a href="https://aci.aero/2022/04/11/the-top-10-busiest-airports-in-the-world-revealed/">a new report by Airports Council International</a> compiling 2021 flight data.</p><p>According to ACI, a global organization of airport authorities, global airports saw 4.5 billion passengers in 2021, with the top 10 handling 10% of that, or 463 million people. Eight of those were in the US, with the other two airports in China. </p><p>Passenger traffic in the top 10 has outpaced 2020 by 51.8%, though it still lags behind 2019 numbers by 29.1%, ACI revealed. Nevertheless, <keyword id="11896628" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="travel" source="Orion">travel</keyword> is bouncing back and the industry is optimistic about the continued recovery in 2022, with US airlines including Alaska, Southwest, and JetBlue on track to top 2019 capacity this summer, <a href="https://twitter.com/lesliejosephs/status/1511304069205344256">according to financial services company Cowen</a>.</p><p>"The ACI World passenger traffic rankings tell the story of an encouraging trend of recovery, with most of the recurrent busiest airports pre-COVID-19 back at the top," ACI World director general Luis Felipe de Oliveira said in a press release. "Although we are cautious that recovery could face multiple headwinds, the momentum created by reopening plans by countries could lead to an uptick in travel in the second half of 2022."</p><p>The busiest airports in the world were dominated by domestic traffic, which has led the global travel recovery, according to ACI. The international segment has been slower to recover due to continued quarantine requirements and border closures, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/air-new-zealand-launching-long-route-east-coast-south-pacific-2022-3">though most of the world's nations have opened or plan to open by summer</a>.</p><p><keyword id="12466712" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="orlando-international-airport" source="Orion">Orlando International Airport</keyword> was the most-improved airport on the list in terms of passenger volume, jumping 20 spots from 27 in 2020 to seven in 2021, ACI revealed. <a href="https://www.clickorlando.com/news/local/2022/02/14/up-up-and-away-orlando-international-airport-named-7th-busiest-airport-in-us/">According to local media reports</a>, the increase can be attributed to the airport reopening to international travel to places like Brazil and England, which brought in nearly two million people in 2021, and increased international traffic by 20.5% compared to 2020.</p><p>Take a closer look at the top eight busiest airports in the world.</p><h2>10. Las Vegas' Harry Reid International Airport</h2><div type="image" title="Las Vegas airport." height="724" width="965" msid="90921674" hostid="261"></div><p>Just under 40 million travelers passed through Las Vegas airport last year, with the airport seeing the second-biggest increase in passenger traffic compared to 2020 at 78.6%. Volume fell 23.1% percent compared to 2019 despite the uptick in travel. Allegiant uses Las Vegas as a major hub and operating base.</p><h2>9. Chengdu Shuangliu International Airport</h2><div type="image" title="Chengdu Airport." height="724" width="965" msid="90921675" hostid="261"></div><p>Chengdu Airport managed just over 40 million travelers in 2021, which was actually a 1.5% decrease from 2020, and 28.2% below 2019 levels. The airport is home to several Asian carriers, including Air China, Chengdu Airlines, Sichuan Airlines, China Southern Airlines, China Eastern Airlines, Tibet Airlines, Lucky Air, and Shenzhen Airlines.</p><h2>8. Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport</h2><div type="image" title="Guangzhou Airport." height="724" width="965" msid="90921676" hostid="261"></div><p>Guangzhou was the busiest airport in the world in 2020, stealing the title from Atlanta. The airport managed about 4.2 million passengers in 2021, however, it saw the biggest drop in passenger volume from last year compared to other airports on the list, with an 8% decrease. It was also 45.1% below 2019 levels. Guangzhou is a hub for China Southern Airlines, 9 Air, FedEx Express, Shenzhen Airlines, and Hainan Airlines.</p><h2>7. <keyword id="11912176" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="orlando" source="Orion">Orlando</keyword> International Airport</h2><div type="image" title="Orlando International Airport." height="607" width="810" msid="90921677" hostid="261"></div><p>Orlando handled about 40.3 million passengers last year, seeing the biggest rise in passenger traffic at 86.7%, which can be attributed to the popular beaches and theme parks that Florida has to offer. Despite the rise, Orlando's volume fell 20.3% compared to 2019. No major airline uses the airport as a hub.</p><h2>6. Charlotte Douglas International Airport</h2><div type="image" title="Charlotte airport." height="743" width="991" msid="90921678" hostid="261"></div><p>Charlotte handled about 43.3 million passengers in 2021, which is 59.2% more than in 2020, but still 13.4% fewer passengers than in 2019. The airport has improved the most in terms of busiest airport rankings, having come in at number 34 in 2019. Charlotte is a major hub for American Airlines.</p><h2>5. Los Angeles International Airport</h2><div type="image" title="Los Angeles International Airport" height="724" width="965" msid="90921680" hostid="261"></div><p>Los Angeles handled 48 million travelers in 2021, which was a 66.8% increase in traffic compared to 2020. Despite the high volume, Los Angeles' passenger traffic was 45.5% below 2019 levels, which was the biggest drop of any airport on the list. The airport is a hub for several carriers, including Alaska Airlines, United Airlines, American, and Delta Air Lines.</p><h2>4. In fact, Ralph Lauren's restaurant arm has only expanded. Meanwhile, other <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/luxury-brands-billion-dollar-investment-real-estate-retail-store-shopping-2024-4">luxury brands</a> have followed in his footsteps and opened their own restaurants and cafes.</p><p>Getting into the restaurant business could be a way for fashion brands to appeal more to <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/cook-chef-manager-amusement-parks-gen-z-attendant-experience-economy2023-11">millennials and Gen Z</a>, who increasingly value experiences over things.</p><p>Osmud Rahman, an associate professor at the Toronto Metropolitan University's School of Fashion told the Canadian newspaper <a target="_blank" href="https://www.theglobeandmail.com/life/style/article-fashion-plates-are-becoming-new-fashion-statements/">The Globe and Mail</a> that brands could use restaurants to appeal to consumers who otherwise can't afford their physical products.</p><p>"It's affordable luxury," Rahman said. The restaurants aren't exactly cheap, but they may still be accessible in a way that a $3,000 handbag isn't.</p><p>Here are six luxury brands that have opened restaurants around the world.</p><h2 id="76d5d2ce-d462-461e-8b05-92663d1612f7">Ralph Lauren</h2><p>After the success of RL on Chicago's Michigan Ave., Ralph Lauren opened its first coffee shop, Ralph's Coffee, in New York City in 2014. Today, Ralph's Coffee has multiple New York locations and has expanded to Chicago, Miami, Virginia, and several European and Asian countries.</p><p>Ralph Lauren opened what's perhaps its most well-known restaurant, The Polo Bar, in New York in 2015. Since opening near the brand's Fifth Avenue flagship, the stylish space has attracted celebrities and fashion icons. The brand opened a second location in Tokyo in 2021, in its seven-story flagship in Ginza.</p><p>Louis Vuitton opened a stand-alone <a target="_blank" href="https://www.instagram.com/louisvuitton/p/CuJvXQENzG7/?img_index=1">restaurant</a> — not attached to one of its stores — in Saint Tropez in 2022, on the terrace at the White 1921 Hotel. <ul class="summary-list"><li>The National Zoo's three giant pandas were shipped to China on Wednesday via FedEx.</li><li>FedEx transports the pandas in large crates that are filled with bamboo, toys, and biscuits.</li></ul><p>Three giant pandas departed the National Zoo in Washington, DC, on Wednesday and are heading for China. So how, exactly, does one transport a 200-pound panda, let alone three of them?</p><p>Via FedEx, of course.</p><p>"It's an incredibly complex endeavor," Brandie Smith, director of the National Zoo, told <a target="_blank" href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/dc-md-va/2023/10/25/panda-logistics-dc-zoo-china/">The Washington Post</a> last month. "There's zero margin for error."</p><p>Panda bears in US zoos have been on loan from China as a matter of <a target="_blank" href="https://www.insider.com/pandas-return-china-national-zoo-spending-million-on-habitat-2023-10">"panda diplomacy,"</a> but as those leases are running out and not getting renewed, the bears are leaving. As of this week, only four panda bears remain in the US, at Zoo Atlanta, at least until their lease expires next year.</p><p>The <a target="_blank" href="https://www.insider.com/pandas-national-zoo-returned-china-us-2023-11">National Zoo's pandas</a>, Mei Xiang, Tian Tian, and their cub Xiao Qi Ji, were picked up by Fedex on Wednesday morning, but the transport process started well before then.</p><p>Bryan Amaral, the zoo's senior curator, told the Post last month the pandas would be shipped in three white steel-and-plexiglass transport containers. "So that they're comfortable with the spaces before the day of the shipment."</p><p>Each panda was also being sent off with it's own massive "carry-on," Amaral told the Post. The container was filled with around 300 pounds of bamboo, water, vegetables, and biscuits.</p><p>On departure day, the pandas were loaded into the large crates with hundreds of pounds and bamboo and some of their favorite toys. The crates were then picked up with forklifts and loaded onto Fedex trucks covered with pictures of pandas.</p><p>The trucks then carried the pandas to Dulles International Airport in Virginia, where they were loaded onto a specially outfitted <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/fedex-pilots-american-airlines-psa-freight-cargo-demand-travel-2023-11">FedEx cargo plane</a>, a massive Boeing 777, dubbed the "Panda Express." Shortly before 1 p.m. the plane, which features an image of a giant panda, took off for the 19-hour journey to China, where they are heading to the Wolong Panda Reserve outside of Chengdu.</p><div type="image" title="fedex plane with panda on it" height="4655" width="7010" msid="105083527" hostid="261" sizebytes="569364"></div><p>The plane was also set to make a refueling stop in Anchorage, Alaska, the <a target="_blank" href="https://apnews.com/article/giant-pandas-china-national-zoo-b5923fc76613a15ade02fd332e1330df">Associated Press</a> reported.</p><p>A FedEx spokesperson said the pandas would have plenty of room to move around, eat, and play on their "first-class" trip, <a target="_blank" href="https://wtop.com/dc/2023/11/national-zoos-pandas-begin-long-journey-back-to-china/">WTOP News</a>, reported.</p><p>Captain Ron Zampini, a 777 chief pilot for FedEx, told the outlet it would be his first time flying with pandas, adding, "It's the highlight of my career, certainly with FedEx."</p><p>"These bears are special. Certainly don't want anything happening to them on my watch," he said. "Our No. 1 objective is to get these lovable bears to Chengdu safe."</p><p>As for whether or not the panda bears will ever return to the US, the National Zoo is hopeful that they will, and has plans to spend $1.7 million updating the panda habitat, which now sits empty.</p>

How FedEx is shipping 3 giant pandas to China: a 19-hour flight, hundreds of pounds of bamboo, toys, and biscuits

China disagrees.</p><p>Under the "One China" policy, Beijing considers Taiwan to be a province of China, one that will eventually be fully reunified - by force, if necessary. China is adamant about this and frequently seeks to assert its claim to Taiwan on the global stage.</p><p>In order to prevent international recognition of Taiwan as a country - which could diminish China's claim to it - the government even demands countries with which it has diplomatic ties to <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/who-are-taiwans-allies-dominican-republic-2018-5">cut relations with Taiwan</a>.</p><p>And now China has set its sights on a new target: foreign airlines.</p><p>On April 25, the Civil Aviation Administration (CAA) of China ordered a number of international airlines, including several from the US, to change how Taiwan is described on their websites and promotional material.</p><p style="font-weight: 400;">The US State Department confirmed to Business Insider airlines received the letter and said it had raised "strong concerns" with Chinese authorities in Beijing about the order.</p><p style="font-weight: 400;">"Regarding websites, we object to Beijing dictating how U.S. firms, including airlines, organize their websites for ease of consumer use. Chinese companies' websites operate freely and without political interference in the United States," a State Department official told Business Insider.</p><p style="font-weight: 400;">The agency also said it "will consider taking appropriate action if necessary in response to unfair Chinese actions."</p><p>But this is not the first time China has tried to exert its influence over foreign companies. The base attracts roughly <a href="http://www.panda.org.cn/english/about/about/2013-09-11/2416.html">3.5 million visitors</a> per year, though Chengdu has big plans to expand this outreach. </span></p><p><span> The government recently held an <a href="http://www.sasaki.com/blog/view/1109/">international competition</a> to solicit ideas for a "Panda Capital." Last week, the global design firm <a href="http://www.sasaki.com/">Sasaki</a> was declared the winner. Their plan includes <a href="http://www.sasaki.com/blog/view/1111/">three new development sites</a>: a lakeside village, wildlife research center, and massive park linked to public transit.</span></p><p><span>The new development - which includes the expansion of the existing panda base - will be 110 times the size of Disneyland, but just a small percentage of the city's overall size. The US Air Force confirmed Sunday the existence of the aircraft.</span></p><p>"It is a full-scale replica," Col. Emmanuel Haldopoulos, Commander of the Savannah Air Dominance Center, <a href="https://theaviationist.com/2018/12/09/usaf-confirms-the-chinese-j-20-spotted-in-georgia-is-a-mock-up-used-for-training-by-the-u-s-marine-corps/">explained</a> to The Aviationist, further explaining that the US Marine Corps "is funding and directing the training objectives of this device."</p><p>The training tool was located at the Savannah Air Dominance Center from Dec. 4 to 6. According to <a href="https://www.thestar.com/business/2016/06/28/first-made-in-china-jetliner-begins-airline-service.html" target="_blank">AP</a>, the ARJ entered service with a two-hour flight from Chengdu to Shanghai's Hongqiao International Airport.</p><p><span>The ARJ21-700, from China's government-owned aircraft manufacturer, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/chinas-answer-to-airbus-and-boeing-has-arrived-2015-11" target="_blank">Comac</a></span>, is designed <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/china-comac-delays-first-c919-flight-2013-8">to compete with offerings</a> from Western airplane makers.</p><p><span>"The first flight of the ARJ21 marks the beginning of commercial, or passenger, operations for the ARJ21 and signifies the first time a domestically made regional jet has been used by a Chinese airline," <span>COMAC chairman Jin Zhuanglong told the AP.</span></span></p><p>First test-flown in 2008, the ARJ21-700 has overcome a series of design setbacks and production delays. <span style="line-height: 1.5em;">Whether the ARJ21 will become a truly effective passenger carrier remains to be seen, but it will definitely force the competition to take notice.</span></p>
