Riding positive indicators from markets abroad, gold traded on a new record high on the futures trade market in India. It traded at Rs 45,724 per 10 gm on <keyword id="6355409" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="mcx">MCX</keyword> even as silver too was on strong wicket. The high gold price in international market continued for the fifth consecutive day. On <keyword id="57178" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="comex">Comex</keyword>, it rose to a seven-year high. On Multi-Commodity Exchange (MCX), gold prices for June was trading Rs 1515 (3.47 per cent) higher at Rs 45,237 per 10 gm in the morning compared with earlier session. <keyword id="103837" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Angel-Broking">Angel Broking</keyword> Deputy Vice President Anuj Gupta said that the high gold price was expected to continue on a high due to investors interest in precious metals in view of economic uncertainties. Silver was trading on the MCX for Rs 43,275 per kg, an increase of Rs 2052, in the first session. It opened at Rs 42,871 and went up to Rs 43,532. In the international future trades markets, gold was trading on Comex at 1,742.20 dollars to an ounce, which was the second highest since October 18 when it was 1,749.10 dollars. Kedia Advisory Director <keyword id="728300" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Ajay-Kedia">Ajay Kedia</keyword> said the high price was due to the fact that gold was seen as a safe investment. Gold was selling for June contract on Comex at 1,711.70 dollars, an increase of 17.80, per ounce. It went up to 1,742 dollars, the highest for seven-and-a-half years. Silver for May contract was selling at 15.55 dollars per ounce, an increase of 2.56 dollars. Market experts said gold prices could touch 2,000 dollars. In Indian market, it could go up to Rs 50,000 per gm in the futures market. Gold, silver rule high on Indian futures trade market

The yellow metal had settled at Rs 59,250 per 10 gram in the previous trade. <keyword id="35264" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="silver" source="Orion">Silver</keyword> also declined Rs 345 to Rs 68,850 per kilogram. "Spot gold prices in the Delhi markets traded at Rs 58,770 per 10 gram, down Rs 480 per 10 gram," Saumil Gandhi, Senior Analyst - Commodities at HDFC Securities, said. In the overseas market, both gold and silver were quoting lower at USD 1,939 per ounce and USD 22.34 per ounce, respectively. Gold price tumbled by ₹480 to ₹58,770 per 10 gram on Wednesday

Since then, <keyword id="18712" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="60" keywordseo="Gold">gold</keyword> has fallen more than 9 percent.
This evening alone, since futures markets reopened to begin the week, the shiny yellow metal is down 4 percent, to $1440 an ounce.
Below is the call Goldman's Damien Courvalin and <keyword id="289500" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Jeffrey-Currie">Jeffrey Currie</keyword> made on Wednesday:

We see risk to our updated forecast as modestly to the upside in the short-term should US data continue to disappoint but increasingly to the downside as we move through 2013. With investor conviction in holding gold waning and aggregate net long positions across COMEX futures and physically backed ETFs near record highs, we suspect that if our forecast for lower gold prices proves correct, the fall in prices could end up being faster and larger than we expect. In addition, a break through the $1,535/toz base to gold prices over the past eighteen months could further accelerate such a decline in prices. 
Given our forecast for lower gold prices and the downside risks to our forecast later in 2013, we recommend initiating a short COMEX gold position as our ECS Top Trade #8, implemented through an S&amp;P GSCI® front-month rolling index to further benefit from the contango in the COMEX future curve (1% per year). We are targeting a move to $1,450/toz compared to the current price of $1,585/toz with a stop at $1,650/toz. While we may be end up too early in entering this trade, we prefer that to being late given our belief that the skew to prices is to the downside.

Goldman Blows Through Year-End Gold Price Target Three Days After Telling Clients To Short

The yellow metal had settled at Rs 72,020 per 10 grams in the previous session. <keyword id="20762025" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="silver-prices" source="keywords">Silver prices</keyword> also jumped Rs 700 to Rs 84,300 per kg. It had closed at Rs 83,600 per kg in the previous close. "Spot gold prices (24 carats) in the Delhi markets are trading at Rs 72,250 per 10 grams, up Rs 230, taking positive cues from the overseas markets," Saumil Gandhi, Senior Analyst of Commodities at HDFC Securities, said. Globally, spot gold at <keyword id="20507568" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Comex" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Comex" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="Comex">Comex</keyword> was trading at USD 2,312 per ounce, up USD 11 from the previous close. Gold resumed trading on a positive note as Friday's weaker-than-expected <keyword id="21550543" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="US-job-market-reports" source="keywords">US job market reports</keyword> have boosted the odds of a September rate cut from the US Federal Reserve. This turned negative for the US dollar and helped the gold price rebound above the USD 2,300 level, Gandhi said. Silver was also quoting higher at USD 27.05 per ounce. In the previous session, it had ended at USD 26.55 per ounce. Meanwhile, in the futures trade on the Multi Commodity Exchange (<keyword id="19925779" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="MCX" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="MCX" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="MCX">MCX</keyword>), gold bounced Rs 657 to trade at Rs 71,325 per 10 grams. The most traded June contract hit an intra-day high of Rs 71,447 per 10 grams at 1840 hrs. Further, silver contracts for July delivery were also trading higher by Rs 1,623 or 2 per cent to Rs 82,666 per kg on the bourse. "Gold prices surged over Rs 500 in MCX to hit Rs 71,200 due to renewed conflict in the Middle East and weak US jobs data. This data increased expectations of an earlier US interest rate cut, which is positive for gold prices. "The forecast is for gold to trade in a range of Rs 70,000 to 72,500 in the near future," Jateen Trivedi, VP Research Analyst of Commodity and Currency at LKP Securities, said. According to Navneet Damani, Senior VP of Commodity Research at Motilal Oswal Financial Services, "Focus will be on Services Purchasing Managers Index (PMI) and Producer Price Index (PPI) from the EU will further provide more direction for the gold prices. A broader trend on COMEX could be in the range of USD 2,275-2,330 level, Damani said.

Since the brutal sell-off that gripped the gold market throughout much of the first half of 2013 came to an end at a price of $1179 an ounce on June 28, the metal has rallied 16.6% over the past month and a half to $1375 at Friday's close.
Sterne Agee analysts Michael Dudas and Satyadeep Jain identify seven things driving recent gold price appreciation in a new report.
"We believe improvement in Chinese economic activity, strong physical demand as evidenced by 54% year-on-year jump in Chinese gold purchases in [the first half of 2013], geopolitical tensions in Middle East, soft U.S. inflation data raising concerns regarding tapering, reversal of ETF outflows, physical market tightness, and short covering – especially given record high short contracts on Comex – have propelled gold and silver higher," say the analysts.

In a note Thursday, JPMorgan analysts John Bridges and Anant Inani <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/jpmorgan-buy-gold-2013-8">recommended clients buy gold</a> ahead of the annual Denver Gold Forum in late September. The analysts cited <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/john-paulson-13f-2013-8">news that John Paulson dumped half of his gold holdings</a> in the second quarter, along with the looming threat of labor strikes by South African gold miners, a bullish report from the World Gold Council on physical gold demand, and favorable seasonality in August and September as reasons to hold the metal over the next four to five weeks.
BofA Merrill Lynch technical strategist MacNeil Curry has been bullish on gold, but warned clients in a note Friday to be careful.

ANALYST: Gold Is Vulnerable To A Short Squeeze

New Delhi, Jan 21 () Gold prices rose Rs 54 to Rs 40,807 per 10 gram in the national capital on Tuesday due to a weaker rupee and global cues, according to HDFC Securities.
 The yellow metal had closed at Rs 40,753 per 10 gram on Monday.
 However, silver prices fell Rs 56 to Rs 47,804 per kg from Rs 47,860 per kg in the previous trade.
 "Spot gold for 24 karat in Delhi was trading up by Rs 54, supported by a weaker rupee and early strength in global gold prices," HDFC Securities Senior Analyst (Commodities) Tapan Patel said.
 The spot rupee was trading around 11 paise weaker against the dollar during the day, he added.
 The rupee depreciated 6 paise to 71.17 against the US dollar in opening trade on Tuesday, tracking weak domestic equity market.
 In the international market, gold was trading at USD 1,559 per ounce, while silver was quoting at USD 18 per ounce on the COMEX.
 In the global market, gold prices traded volatile with spot international gold prices at COMEX traded near USD 1,559, declining from the highs made near USD 1,568 for the day, Patel said.
 "Gold prices may trade sideways to up in the near term with support at USD 1,550 and resistance at USD 1,580," he said. RVK HRS

Maintaining its upward march for the third straight day, the precious metal touched a fresh lifetime high of Rs 65,650 per 10 grams. The yellow metal had closed at Rs 65,150 per 10 grams in the previous trade. Silver prices also rallied by Rs 400 to Rs 74,900 per kg. In the previous session, it closed at Rs 74,500 per kg. <ul><li><keyword id="46002" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="gold-prices" source="Orion">Gold prices</keyword> hit a fresh all-time high in the last two trading sessions.</li><li><keyword id="85550" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="silver-prices" source="Orion">Silver prices</keyword> also zoomed Rs 1,000 to hit record Rs 81,700 per kg.</li><li>In the international markets, spot gold at COMEX was trading at USD 2,297 per ounce.</li></ul>New Delhi, Gold prices surged by Rs 850 to reach a new peak of Rs 70,050 per 10 grams on Thursday on strong global cues, according to HDFC Securities. This is the second straight session that precious metal prices have hit all-time high levels. In the previous trade, the precious metal had settled at Rs 69,200 per 10 grams. Silver prices also zoomed Rs 1,000 to hit record Rs 81,700 per kg. In the previous session, it had finished at Rs 80,700 per kg. "Spot gold prices (24 carats) in the Delhi markets are trading at Rs 70,050 per 10 grams, up by Rs 850, amid a bullish trend in the overseas markets," Saumil Gandhi, Senior Analyst of Commodities at HDFC Securities, said. In the international markets, spot gold at COMEX was trading at USD 2,297 per ounce, up by USD 22 from the previous close. Gold touched yet another record after Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell confirmed that an interest rate cut would likely be appropriate "at some point this year". Traders focus on rate cuts rather than the timing of the first rate cut, Gandhi said. Silver was also trading higher at USD 27.05 per ounce. It had closed at USD 26.25 per ounce in the previous session. "Gold continues to hover around its all-time high levels on the back of weakness in the dollar amid uncertainty over US interest rate cuts, while increased safe-haven demand also aided prices. "Additionally, silver prices too marked an all-time high on the domestic front, amidst a sharp rally in industrial metals," Navneet Damani, Senior VP of Commodity Research at Motilal Oswal Financial Services, said. Persistent geopolitical tensions in the Middle East and between Russia and Ukraine, coupled with a devastating earthquake in Taiwan, spurred safe haven plays into bullion and other precious metals, Damani added. According to Praveen Singh - Associate VP, Fundamental Currencies and Commodities at Sharekhan by BNP Paribas, "Major US economic data, including weekly jobless claims to be released on Thursday, will provide more insights on the US Federal Reserve's monetary policy outlook". Investors will also look forward to services and composite PMIs out of the UK and the Eurozone, Singh added.

"Markets now see a 77.2 per cent chance of rates remaining unchanged in the June meeting (of US Federal Reserve). Meanwhile, dollar index and bond yields retreated from their recent peak, dollar index was down by 0.73 per cent and settled at 103.56 level in the previous session. Weakness in US dollar and expectation of a pause in the US Federal reserve policy tightening campaign boosted precious metals' appeal," said Saumil Gandhi, Senior Analyst, Commodities, HDFC Securities Ltd. He said the Comex Spot <keyword id="35271" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="gold-price" source="Orion">gold price</keyword>s traded up on Friday, with spot gold price trading higher by 0.06 per cent at $1978.80 per ounce. While Gold August futures contract at MCX was trading up by 0.05 per cent at Rs 60,250 per 10 grams by noon. "Gold prices advanced in Asian trading hours on Friday. Yellow metal rallied as sentiments improved after dovish comments from Philadelphia Federal Reserve President Patrick Harker argued that US central bankers should not raise <keyword id="17592929" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="interest-rates" source="AI-Generative">interest rates</keyword> at their next meeting even though high inflation is coming down at a 'disappointingly slow' pace," Gandhi said. Comex spot gold is likely to find buyers in the range of $1965/$1950 per ounce and while $1995/$2009 per ounce is the resistance for the day. MCX Gold August future likely to find support at Rs 60,080/59,700 per 10 gram and resistance at Rs 60,580/60,750 per 10 grams, he said. With regional US banks showing signs of stability, inflation still running hot and the debt deal coming through, the US Federal Reserve may choose to raise rates in June, which will be negative for gold in the near term, said Quantum AMC in a report authored by Chirag Mehta, CIO &amp; Ghazal Jain, Fund Manager. According to Quantum AMC, if the US Fed does pause in June, whether the pause will be extended or temporary will depend on whether or not prices remain on a sustained downward path. A pause would be positive for gold prices. Over the medium term, the economic headroom for the Fed to keep raising rates is limited. Markets are still expecting the Federal Reserve to cut rates later this year. A rate cut will be preceded by deteriorating economic conditions or financial instability, making the investment case for holding portfolio diversifiers like gold strong, the Quantum AMC report said. Our bias is to expect further declines in gold prices on the combination of continued ETF outflows as conviction in holding gold continues to wane as well as our economists’ forecast for a reacceleration in US growth later this year.
