<ul><li>Millions of students and working professionals have started learning a new skill and are reskilling online. </li><li>According to <keyword id="23248" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Online-learning">online learning</keyword> platform <keyword id="1017386" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Coursera">Coursera</keyword>, machine learning, programming for everybody and science of well-being have been the top choices among Indian learners ever since the country went into lockdown. </li><li>Coursera has over 55 million users registered globally — including 6 million in India. </li></ul>Millions of students and working professionals are now confined to homes due to the <keyword id="8637077" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Coronavirus-lockdown">Coronavirus lockdown</keyword>. And for a lot of them, this is a great time to start learning a new skill and reskill online. According to online learning platform Coursera, machine learning, programming for everybody and science of well-being have been the top choices among Indian learners ever since the country went into lockdown. The edtech company also said that there has been a dramatic growth in the health domain — along with increased interest in courses on <keyword id="1754604" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="coronavirus">Coronavirus</keyword> and personal development. Coursera has over 55 million users registered globally — including 6 million in India. And the learner base has only increased over the past few weeks. “Over the past month we have seen a 6-fold increase – six times the learners individually enrolling on the platform,” <keyword id="9131740" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="emily-glassberg-sands">Emily Glassberg Sands</keyword>, VP of Data Science at Coursera told Business Insider. This is because even working professionals are keen reskilling themselves in areas like management and business communication such as managing remote teams. “Working professionals are also turning to Coursera for topics across domains. Everything from mental health to learning more about Corona, homeschooling their children, these courses are to guide them in their personal lives, work and academics,” said Emily. The edtech platform has nearly 160 university partners and 20 industry partners. “We give eight weeks for students to complete the course. These individuals who are registering during Coronavirus lockdown, are active enrollments happening at a higher rate compared to the pre- Coronavirus phase. We are seeing higher utilization — 30% increase in learners (employees and students) probably because people aren’t commuting as much,” she said. Here are the top 10 courses on Coursera after India went into lockdown mode

Nearly two years after <keyword id="1017386" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Coursera">Coursera</keyword> released a survey reporting widespread career and educational impact of online courses for Indians, it has now come out with '2017 Learner <keyword id="4462166" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="outcomes-survey">Outcomes Survey</keyword>' which shows its online learners are reporting even greater benefits than before. 89% of Indian learners among working professionals and job seekers (“career builders”), reported career benefits compared to 84% globally, 84% in the US and 86% in the UK. In India, 46% of career builders reported to have got better in their jobs, and 39% reported to have improved their candidacy for a new job. We asked Coursera's Chief Business Officer, <keyword id="875440" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Nikhil-Sinha">Nikhil Sinha</keyword>, as to what has led to such an overwhelming response in the Indian market. This is what he had to say: "Indian professional class is one of the most aspirational classes anywhere in the world. Education has always been most important to us to improve our socio-economic condition. We are seeing that a graduate degree is no more a guarantee of continued progess in one's career, and that life-long learning and continuous engagement with top educational content is essential to on an ongoing basis if you want to survive in this competitive world." "This recognition is what we are starting to see among professionals as well as companies. Companies in India are also making investments in learning, development and training. There is now an understanding that continual development of individials and learners is absolutely essential for career development, and this is what has led to a spurt in digital learning," he added. But, the encouraging response also comes at a time when Coursera started charging a fee for its courses. When it started five years back it offered free courses. How then was this company able to multiply the number of its numbers To this, Sinha clarified," We still have free content. Coursera, along with its university partners, only charges for the ability for learners to take assessment and to get a certificate. Despite plugging in these prices, these numbers indicate we have seen no reduction in the number of people signing up for our courses. The growth in India is infact faster than anywhere else in the world." He said,"Coursera sees 60,000 new learners every month from India. This makes for 10% of our global growth. India is also the second largest revenue market for Coursera after the US." While the company reports to be adding more users to its pool, the learner survey cites 98% of existing Indian learners seeking educational outcomes are reporting benefits higher than the global average (93%). Also, Indians were much more likely than learners in other markets to report benefits such as gaining knowledge, deciding on an area of study, or earning credits. Moreover, even as the most valuable benefits of online learning are not always tangible, 83% of Indians who completed online <keyword id="1915518" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Coursera-courses">Coursera courses</keyword> reported “gaining confidence” compared to 72% of people globally. Responding on how this education portal is reflecting such tangible benefits, Sinha said - "Coursera has been able to engage people and show tangible impact owing to three qualities - its top quality education (from some of the best schools like Harvard, Yale, Oxford etc) in a wide range of subjects that allow people to get mastery in any area that they want, and in a learning experience that is unmatched." Indians, he further said, have been given the opportunity to access courses from universities that most would never have the opportunity to learn from in any other way. The knowledge and confidence that they gain from this experience can, therefore, have a major impact on their lives leading to greater earning potential or to finding more fulfillment in their careers. In the coming future, Coursera plans to continue demonstrating the 2017 impact. Sinha concluded, saying-"We think about adding value to our learners. We will continue to build more content, and as we evolve, we will try to personalize some of this experience and be able to match learners with right content." The Coursera Learner Outcomes Survey is based on 13,917 survey responses globally and 756 in India from learners who completed a course on Coursera from March 2015 through June 2016 (responses collected March 2016 to Dec 2016).

Which age bracket uses Coursera the most? 
The main user group for India is a 22-28 year old, a mid-career builder, it’s male skewed, and the main intention is to get ahead in their careers. 
 
Are you worried that the Indian education system doesn’t recognize certificate programmes? 
I’m not worried because we’re planning a long game. For us to win, we need to teach skills that people need to succeed in their careers, and teach ‘em well. Whether people recognize a certificate and to what degree to me, is a secondary question. 
 
However, going ahead it’s onto us to ensure that at least the companies recognize these certificates, and skills. Already, 90% of Indian <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Coursera">Coursera</a> users guarantee they got some career edge, and 30% say they got a tangible benefit. That means a job, promotion, raise or launching a startup. 
 
Similarly, universities across the country and abroad are toying with the idea of setting these courses as pre-requisite for admission, even offering credits for the same. We’ll dig deeper, and get back to you with exact names sometime soon. 
 
What’s the effective completion rate? 
If people have paid for the course, the completion rates are to the tune of over 70%. If they haven’t, the rates are much lower. 
 
Does the self-taught and self-paced system work for a country with rigorous classroom-based taught programmes? 
The fact that someone’s taken time out to enroll shows their drive. Some may have completed the course, some may not. That’s secondary. 
We’re working on some augmented learning solutions. Just like in a gym, people may need personal trainers, we’ll be rolling out personalized learning experiences over the next few years. Nothing’s decided yet. 
 
Will the augmented reality support extend onto the free courses? 
The moment you introduce human contact, the price goes up. 
 
If you have a human being doing something, you have to pay that human being. That’s the reality of it unfortunately. However, the good thing is that you’ll get a <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Stanford">Stanford</a> certificate after a 2 months course for Rs. 2000. Where are you going to get that value? 
 
What’s the Male-Female ratio like? 
The male-female ratio is approximately 70:30, and it’s something I’d love to change over time. 
 
Why this disparity, even for online courses? 
Like everywhere else, we’re not doing everything we can as a country to create opportunities for women in business, technology and data science. 
 
However, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Coursera">Coursera</a> is more female-skewed than what the industry numbers show. 
 
Why should I enroll in an online course? 
In college you’re enrolled into a certain course, but here you have the ability to explore. 
 
You can play around with Data Science, Poetry and Chemistry at the same time, test the water, and go back to what you really want. All of that at zero cost. Second is quality. Many of our Professors are noble prize winners. They use data to ensure the questions they ask lead to tangible outcomes. Also, you have the freedom to learn anywhere, anytime, on any device. 
 
Will Coursera be available in regional languages? 
Currently our focus in on English. There are 50 million people in India who know English well enough to learn in English. The skill gap there is tremendous, and we’ve only tapped into 1.4 million of them. The opportunity to grow there is so large, it will be diluting our efforts to offer courses in vernacular languages. 
 
Where does the majority of your user-base lie? 
It’s usually Bangalore, Delhi and Bombay in that order. 
 
How can a startup founder benefit from Coursera? He/she can take courses to understand <keyword id="6359301" type="POSITION" weightage="80" keywordseo="Entrepreneur">entrepreneur</keyword>ship. The biggest mistake an entrepreneur makes is that they never realize there’s a right way to be an <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=entrepreneur">entrepreneur</a>. They typically figure it out as they go. <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=entrepreneurship">Entrepreneurship</a> courses are helpful to cut down the cycle time. 
 
Also, they can train their teams cheap using <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Coursera">Coursera</a>. Startups may not always find the perfect fit for a job.

Any university — with or without partnership — can access the learning content available on the platform. “Coursera for Campus gives universities the ability to quickly respond to the rapidly changing economy. With access to content from 200 top universities and industry educators, higher education institutions can easily enhance their existing curricula with critical digital skills and author online courses,” said Jeff Maggioncalda, CEO of Coursera. This implies that over 3,600 courses on Coursera will be made available to students and faculty, globally along with the access to various assessment tools, projects and analytics to track performance. It will include API integration, gradebooks, and plagiarism detection for assessment. The faculties will also be able to publish private lessons, courses, assessments. They will be exposed to ‘Skills Index Dashboard’ where they can assess students on their behaviour, and skill mastery. The Global Skill Index 2019 published by Coursera shows that over 60% of the world’s population lacks critical skills. Coursera launches campus product to integrate online learning with university lessons

<ul><li>Global technology multinational <keyword id="10863" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="CapGemini">Capgemini</keyword> today partnered with <keyword id="1017386" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Coursera">Coursera</keyword>, an online learning platform to train its employees across verticals. </li><li>These include over 4,000 courses ranging from data science to personal development and business. </li><li>Nearly 25,000 Capgemini employees have signed up on Coursera’s enterprise platform — and they have completed more than 22,000 courses. </li><li>Reskilling employees in the digital space is critical to the IT major as these technologies, including cloud services comprise over 50% of the IT major. </li></ul>Global technology multinational Capgemini today partnered with Coursera, an online learning platform to train its employees across verticals in digital skills and other emerging technologies. Capgemini partners with Coursera to reskill employees in digital technologies — and 25,000 IT employees have already enrolled

In Asia, India ranks low, placed at 16th, ahead of countries such as the Philippines and Thailand, but below others like Singapore and Japan. "The pace of skills transformation is slower than the pace of digital transformation in India, as is the case in several countries across the world," Coursera's Managing Director, India and <keyword id="156416" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="APAC">APAC</keyword>, <keyword id="3472273" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Raghav-Gupta">Raghav Gupta</keyword>, said in a statement. "Learners must invest in both soft and technical skills to prepare for jobs of the future," he added. According to the report, Indians have 52 per cent proficiency in ML and 54 per cent in mathematical skills. India ranks 67th globally in data skills; lags behind Singapore and Japan, says report

Mumbai, Mar 30 () As the country is under lockdown to curtail the spread of COVID-19, different ed-tech platforms have seen a surge in enrolment with professionals signing up for upskilling and schools and colleges using them to finish pending syllabus. Illumnus, an ed-tech startup by IIT Bombay &amp; BITS Pilani alumni, has witnessed more than 1200 per cent growth in users since the lockdown, Illumnus Founder and CEO Akash Singhal told here.He said, the company's Collaborative Learning Management System (C-LMS) provides premier educational institutions with their internal digital learning network, simplifying the communication flow among students and teachers even after school hours.The company is already affiliated with 14 institutions globally and is looking at affiliating with up to 150 schools and universities by the end of July, he added."We are a startup that was formed with the objective of creating and curating the best platform for propagating education amongst individuals, breaking all social constraints of classroom learning. Therefore, this initiative is to support the entire education sector in the country, without letting COVID-19 affect our teaching system," he added.Co founder of Great Learning, an ed-tech company for working professionals, Hari Krishnan Nair opined that the lockdown has been a turning point for e-learning platforms as many professionals as well as students are utilising this current situation to upskill themselves."We have witnessed 100 per cent growth in users during the three and a half weeks. With high quality courses in association with universities, we are seeing an uptick in enrolment from across the globe," he added.However, in India the men ratio among students is 60:40 and in professionals it is 80:20, he pointed out.Coursera Managing Director, India and APAC, Raghav Gupta said comparing the past 30 days with the preceding 30 days, there has been a 445 per cent increase in enrolments in Public Health content on the platform overall -- almost 150-800 per cent increase in affected countries.In India there has been 416 per cent increase in enrolment in public health related courses, he added.There has been a daily growth of 54 per cent in overall registration for different courses in India in March, he added.Coursera has provided impacted universities and colleges free access to its course catalog through the 'Coursera for Campus' platform through which universities and colleges can sign up to provide their enrolled students with access to more than 3,800 courses and 400 specializations.Akhil Shahani, Managing Director of the Shahani Group, which runs a range of colleges in areas like business, media, real estate, finance among others, said the only way to make online education accessible to all is to increase the number of smartphone users.However, there are three major hindrances to the adoption of online learning, the first is that many rural areas in India do not have good internet connectivity, so cannot access online education."The second hindrance is that a majority of online education is in the English, which only 10 per cent of India's population understands. It is imperative to have more educational content available in vernacular languages. "The third is that many employers do not consider online degrees to be credible for entry-level job hiring. They're ideally a way to reach the massive part of the world's population who likely won't ever have a chance to attend a top school, or in many cases, even a bad one. 
But, according to a <a href="http://papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers.cfm?abstract_id=2350964">new survey from the University of Pennsylvania</a> highlighted <a href="http://blogs.wsj.com/digits/2013/11/20/survey-mooc-students-are-elite-young-and-male-2/">by The Wall Street Journal</a>, the vast majority of people who sign up for the online courses have socioeconomic advantages. Enrollment skews overwhelmingly toward white people, men, the highly educated, and people from developed countries.
In short, it's the sort of elites who had access in the first place that are taking these courses out of curiosity or to advance their careers.
Of the survey's respondents, 83% report having some kind of post-secondary education, and at least 79.4% have a bachelor's degree. 
This divide is most pronounced in countries where relatively few people get tertiary education. In Brazil, Russia, India, and China, where only 5.1% of citizens have some college education, nearly 80% of MOOC takers have been to college. 
To be sure, the data provides only a snapshot, coming from 32 sessions of 24 different courses that have been offered by the University of Pennsylvania on Coursera. But considering that those courses have covered a full range of subjects, that Coursera is the largest provider of MOOCs, and the University of Pennsylvania is the second-most active school on the platform after Stanford, the trends are concerning.

Reaching the less educated in underdeveloped countries will always be a challenge. But the vision of granting access to people who otherwise wouldn't have it and reducing the cost of higher education hasn't materialized yet.
In fact, Udacity, one of the earliest and most prominent MOOC providers, is now <a href="http://www.fastcompany.com/3021473/udacity-sebastian-thrun-uphill-climb">pivoting towards providing corporate training</a> rather than education in general. Udacity is a for-profit company, as is Coursera. It seems that any effort geared towards reaching the most underserved populations isn't likely to be a money maker.
