(Eds: Adding more details) New Delhi, July 1 () State-owned BSNL on Wednesday cancelled a multi-crore tender for 4G telecom network upgrade after the government asked the firm not to use any Chinese equipment. The move comes against the backdrop of a growing clamour against Chinese goods and services after the violent clash at border with China. Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL) on Wednesday issued a notice for cancellation of the 4G tender. A source privy to the development told that a new tender will be floated which will have emphasis on preference to Make in India. BSNL Chairman could not be reached for comments. "Tender for planning, engineering, supply, installation, testing, commissioning and annual maintenance of 4G mobile network in north, east, west and south zones of BSNL and Delhi and Mumbai LSA of MTNL (Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Ltd) on turnkey basis...issued on March 23, 2020 is hereby cancelled," BSNL notice said. The notice for cancellation has been "issued with the approval of competent authority", it added. Meanwhile sources said that government had earlier directed BSNL not to use Chinese equipment in 4G upgrade, and implementation of the direction meant that the company has to issue a new tender. Keeping in view the developing Indian capacity and in-house technology, a new tender will be floated, the source said adding this will have emphasis on preference to Make in India. Nearly a fortnight ago, the telecom department had asked state-owned BSNL and MTNL to shun the use of Chinese telecom equipment in their 4G upgrade, underlining a hardening of stance in the backdrop of tensions at the India-China border. On June 29, India banned 59 apps with Chinese links, including hugely popular TikTok and UC Browser, saying they were prejudicial to sovereignty, integrity and security of the country. The ban, which came in the backdrop of current stand-off along the border in Ladakh with Chinese troops, is also applicable for WeChat and Bigo Live. The list of apps that have been banned also include Helo, Likee, CamScanner, Vigo Video, Mi Video Call – Xiaomi, Clash of Kings as well as e-commerce platforms Club Factory and Shein. This marks the largest sweep against the Chinese technology companies. The Information Technology Ministry statement had cited many complaints received from various sources, including several reports about misuse of some mobile apps available on Android and iOS platforms for "stealing and surreptitiously transmitting users' data in an unauthorised manner to servers which have locations outside India". "A white colour Alto taxi no. HP 01D 2440 was hired from Pathankot by three unknown people. The driver of the taxi, Vijay Kumar from Gaggal, Kangada was found dead on 20 Jan 2016 at the Kalta Bridge, Dist. Kangada. The Alto car is missing. Search operations are on. Stay Alert!" New Delhi, Apr 30 () Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday held a "detailed" meeting to discuss the potential economic reforms in the mines and coal sectors to give a boost to the economy in the backdrop of the COVID-19 pandemic. The discussions involved ensuring easy and abundant availability of mineral resources from domestic sources, upscaling exploration, attracting investment and modern technology to generate large-scale employment through transparent and efficient processes, according to an official statement. <ul><li><keyword id="357983" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Masayoshi-Son">Masayoshi Son</keyword>, has pledged to provide free solar energy to India and other members of the International Solar Alliance in 25 years. </li><li><keyword id="163404" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Softbank">Softbank</keyword>’s contracts to supply energy to <keyword id="222666" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="ISA">ISA</keyword> countries via a power purchasing agreement expire in 25 years, after which the company would have recouped its solar energy investments. </li><li>Son’s announcement came against the backdrop of the inaugural meeting of the ISA in New Delhi.</li></ul> In a move that is bound to get more countries to sign up for the International Solar Alliance (ISA), the CEO of Softbank, Masayoshi Son, has pledged to provide free solar energy to India and other members of alliance in 25 years. Son’s remarks came on 3 October at a renewable energy conference in India’s National Capital Region. Softbank’s contracts to supply energy to ISA countries via a power purchasing agreement expire in 2043, hence the 25-year deadline. Son explained that while the lifespan of <keyword id="70990" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Solar-power">solar power</keyword> projects extends to 80 years, they begin operating at a 85% of their original capacity after the first five years. Hence, the bulk of earnings come in the first 25 years, after which it would become feasible to provide electricity at dramatically reduced rates since Softbank would have recouped its investment. In addition, producing solar power in India is a lot cheaper than in other countries. In June this year, NHK, a Japanese broadcaster, reported that Softbank was planning to invest upto $100 billion in India’s solar energy sector. The investment was in addition to a $20 billion deal signed in 2015, wherein the technology firm agreed to partner with Foxconn and Bharti Enterprises for some solar energy projects. The ISA was launched by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in November 2015 at the UN Conference on Climate Change in Paris. Headquartered in India, the alliance has invited 121 countries situated between the Tropics of Cancer and Capricorn to sign up. However, only 70 countries have signed the ISA founding agreement, out of which 47 have ratified it. Son’s announcement came against the backdrop of an inaugural meeting of the ISA in New Delhi. UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres was in attendance. As part of his keynote speech, Modi said that he envisioned the ISA becoming an energy cartel like the <keyword id="47969" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Opec">OPEC</keyword> group.

Softbank's CEO pledges to give India and other solar alliance members free power in 25 years

New Delhi, Jun 30 () The government on Tuesday approved a two-year extension to Union Bank of India managing director Rajkiran Rai G. With the extension of the term, he will continue as the MD of the bank till the superannuation - that is May 31, 2022 or until further order, according to a finance ministry notification. As per the Banking Regulation Act, the upper age limit for the managing director of nationalised banks is 60 year. Rai was appointed MD of Union Bank of India on July 1, 2017 for a period of three-years till June 30, 2020. Prior to his elevation as MD, he was executive director of Oriental Bank of Commerce. The extension of tenure comes at the backdrop of merger of Andhra Bank and Corporation Bank with Union Bank of India effective April 1 this year. With the merger, Union Bank India has become the country's fifth largest public sector lender. DP BAL BAL

New Delhi, Apr 30 () Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday held a "comprehensive" meeting to discuss strategies to attract more foreign investments into India as well as to promote local investments in order to give a boost to the economy against the backdrop of the COVID-19 pandemic. An official statement said the meeting discussed that a scheme should be developed to promote more "plug and play" infrastructure in the existing industrial lands, plots or estates in the country and provide necessary financing support.During the meeting, Modi directed all concerned that action should be taken for a more proactive approach to "handhold" the investors, to look into their problems and help them in getting all the necessary central and state clearances in a time-bound manner. A bench comprising Justices Vipin Sanghi and Jasmeet Singh said, "We direct that if any import is made by any person of this drug (Amphotericin B), it shall be allowed on a bond furnished by the importer without the actual duty being paid, till a decision is taken by the Centre." The bench observed that the medicine is essential to save lives of several thousands of people suffering from mucormycosis. In the backdrop of shortage of the medicine in the country, the <keyword id="6355392" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="High-Court">High Court</keyword> emphasised that the Centre should seriously consider waiving customs duty for a limited period or till issues with shortage of medicine exists. On the aspect of the bond for importing the medicine, the High Court said any person can import Amphotericin B and if any import is made by any person, it should be cleared by accepting the bond from the importer without actual payment of duty till the Centre takes a final decision in the matter.
