The Election Commission shows BJP's star power working in its favour with former cricketer Gautam Gambhir leading in East Delhi, singer Hans Raj Hans emerging ahead in North West Delhi and Manoj Tiwari working his magic in North East Delhi. Even BJP's non-star candidates, Ramesh Bidhuri is leading in South Delhi with 27,641 votes and Parvesh Sahib Singh Verma is racing head in West Delhi with 34,608 votes. These are initial leads and the final results will be shared by the Election Commission by the end of the day. While some surveys say that Congress might be able to win one seat out from under the BJP, others see a repeat of the Lok Sabha Election in 2014 with all the seats going to India’s saffron party. Delhi proudly houses the parliament, the ruling center from where the country’s legislatures are made. Over the past few elections, the statistics show that the voting preferences of the electors in the city and the results in these constituencies have been clearly reflecting the moods of the voters across the country. Hence the party that wins from the majority of constituencies in Delhi was only seen forming the government. During 2014 general elections for the parliament, the BJP won from all the seven seats in Delhi and eventually marched proudly to form the government. In 2009 Lok Sabha elections, the Congress had bagged all the seven seats and went to form the government. Bringing contestants like the former Bhojpuri actor, Manoj Tiwari, in North East Delhi, singer, Hans Raj Hans, in North West Delhi and former cricketer, Gautam Gambhir in East Delhi may have worked in the BJP’s favour with different exit polls predicting that the national party is set to take home at least five seats from Delhi. BJP relied on star power during the polls, Congress stuck to legacy politics and the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP)’s platform was based on their municipal successes. During the 2014 election, BJP’s victory was unanimous with the political party winning over all seven seats. Now, the party is taking the exit polls an indication of their majority, has already planning for the Delhi’s assembly elections scheduled to take place in 2020 with reports of Tiwari taking meeting with official from municipal boards in the city. Before the polls, traders in the city already opined that while AAP was good for the city, they would still like to see a national party in power to represent the Delhi’s interests in Parliament. Past electoral experiences show that the city’s voting pattern differs greatly when it comes to the national elections versus state elections.

At present, the sitting MP from this constituency is Maheish Girri of the BJP. Gautam Gambhir joined the BJP only recently in March 2019. He has been used by the BJP as a star campaigner and to speak for the party on News channels. Gautham Gambhir is new to politics and this is his first election. Since he is a Punjabi Arora by caste, he can get the BJP the support of his caste in the East Delhi seat. Also his appeal among the youth and women is an added advantage for the BJP. Atishi is one of the prospective candidates for the AAP since she is said to have accomplished a phenomenal work in the capital to promote public education. She came to headlines when the Union Home ministry sacked her from her position as an advisor to the Delhi Deputy Chief Minister after Atishi establishing her name over the three years of her tenure.

Congress, on the other hand, has its hopes pinned on <keyword id="39794" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Sheila-Dixit">Sheila Dixit</keyword>, Delhi’s former Chief Minister who held her seat for 15 years. But data from the Election Commission shows that Dixit is way behind in the vote count with only 21.3% of the vote share versus Tiwari strong lead with 60.3% of the vote share. Even the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) candidate, Dilip Pandey, only has 14.1% of the vote share to his name. Tiwari is also feeling confident about his win stating that he will come out ahead with a margin of over 200,000 votes while speaking to <a href="https://www.news18.com/videos/india/could-win-by-a-margin-of-over-2-lakh-votes-manoj-tiwari-2156349.html">News18.</a> He also said that the BJP is poised to win nation-wide with a margin of over 350 seats. Dixit, on the other hand, maintains that she will be victorious overcoming the divisions in religion and caste in the constituency.
