The top most popular pick of the audience, however, is Rajkumar Hirani’s 3 Idiots ( 85% of the audience voted for it). The movie released in 2009 was a superhit starring Aamir Khan, Madhavan and Sharman Joshi and loosely based on Chetan Bhagat’s Five Point Someone. The survey conducted amongst 3,000 Hindi-film goers analyzed films released between January 1990 to September 2023. The report which picked the top 100 movies, is based on audience equity. Ormax believes that franchises have a long way to go in the Hindi film industry. “Franchise films have been a dominant force driving the growth and stability for Hollywood over the past two decades. The contribution of franchise films to the Hindi theatrical domestic box office has grown from a mere 17% in 2019 to 45% in 2023,” said Sanket Kulkarni, head of business development (theatrical), Ormax Media. Hollywood has made popular movie franchises be it Justice League, Marvel, Star Wars and more. It also has long-running franchises like Fast and the Furious as well as Scream. The Indian film industry has recently kickstarted the trend with the highly successful Bahubali series as well as KGF. The audience also picked popular franchises of Gadar, which recently had a second superhit sequel this year. Then there was also Dhoom where three movies have been made starring John Abraham, Hrithik Roshan and Aamir Khan as protagonists. They also picked Sunil Shetty, Akshay Kumar and Paresh Rawal starrer Hera Pheri, even as its sequel bombed at the box office. Surprisingly, none of Rohit Shetty’s action films with a cop universe like Singham and Simmba feature in the list. But Ajay Devgn’s Drishyam, which is an adaptation of a Malayalam movie of the same name, made the cut. The other movie that made the cut is Vicky Kaushal’s Uri: The Surgical Strike. “As the theatrical landscape increasingly leans toward event-driven films, choosing the right film to expand or initiate the franchise can go a long way in creating a powerful theatrical product,” said Kulkarni. Not just actors but the lists included directors, musicians and movies that have inspired the most digital curiosity in India since 2006. 
 No surprises there that one of the most popular Indian actors, <keyword id="6354583" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Salman-Khan">Salman Khan</keyword> makes it to the top of the Google’s most searched list. <keyword id="836886" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Sunny-Leone">Sunny Leone</keyword> has made to the most searched actress on the Google’s List leaving behind Katrina Kaif. With Bigg Boss 8 ending in all its glory last Saturday, the curtains have risen for the historical show Chakravartin Ashoka Samrat. It has Siddharth Nigam in the lead role, the child actor who rose to fame after Dhoom 3. The show unfolds the saga of the great king Ashoka, and his transition from just another prince to one of the greatest rulers of the world. 
 
Other than Siddharth, the show has an ensemble cast of Manoj Joshi, Pallavi Subhash and Sameer Dharmadhikari, and Sumit Kaul. 
Manoj Joshi, who is donning the role of Chanakya, is quite known for seamlessly portraying the character in a play titled Chanakya for years now. 
 
Pallavi Subhash plays Queen Dharma, Ashoka’s mother. As per the advertisements being run for the show, Ashoka builds the whole empire for the honour of his mother. 
 
Playing the role of King Bindusara is Sameer Dharmadhikari, who has been in many historical and mythological shows like Jhansi Ki Rani, Buddha and Mahabharat. 
 
What makes this show different from others is the massive set that has been set up in the town of Karjat, 60 kms from Mumbai. Since the show is about the lives of Kings and Queens, the set had to be massive and the makers made sure that the audience gets a glimpse into the royalty. 
 
Talking of the producers, the show has been produced by Cantiloe, the production company behind shows like Veer Shivaji, Bharat Ka Veer Putra – Maharana Pratap, and Jhansi Ki Rani.

The movie raked in Rs 1.60 crore on the opening on Friday and went on to add Rs 1.55 crore on Saturday and Rs 1.7 crore on Sunday. For a movie of this budget, Super Nani has managed to get some good business thanks to the positive word of mouth publicity and it might be able to end up in the green. 
 
Roar is a thriller movie, which managed an average opening of Rs 1.5 crore on Friday and earned Rs 1.42 crore and 1.8 crore on Saturday and Sunday, respectively. Even Roar seems to have hit the right chord with its target audience and is doing decent business. 
 On the other hand, <keyword id="43845" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="80" keywordseo="Happy-New-Year">Happy New Year</keyword> continues its spectacular run at the box office, collecting Rs 8.6 crores on the second Sunday or 10th day of the film’s release. By the looks of it, Happy New Year is gunning to get its name etched in the Rs 300-crore club, but will it be able to enter the Rs 500-crore club or break the earning collection record set by Dhoom 3 is something that we will have to wait and see.

Given the kind of work that both Khan and Hirani have done in their career, this project looks promising enough. 
 
The makers have not left any stone unturned in leveraging this curiosity, as evident from the zero knowledge that we seem to have about the character that Aamir is playing in the movie. Nobody knows if he is playing the role of an alien, a drunkard, or just a homeless man. 
 
The teaser of the movie was released yesterday, after 4 motion posters of the movie, one of which included the much talked still of sans-clothes Aamir, carrying only a transistor to save his modesty. 
 Coming to the teaser of the movie, which was released yesterday and has already crossed a million views on YouTube, the teaser carries the background voice of <keyword id="6357860" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Anushka-Sharma">Anushka Sharma</keyword>, who goes by the name of Jagat Janani in the movie. The teaser shows Aamir, sporting green contact lenses, and playing around with a childlike innocence on his face. <keyword id="1493204" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="sushant-singh-rajpoot">Sushant Singh Rajpoot</keyword>, Boman Irani, <keyword id="34155" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="saurabh-shukla">Saurabh Shukla</keyword>, and <keyword id="7645" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Sanjay-Dutt">Sanjay Dutt</keyword> can also be seen in the teaser. 
 
From the looks of it, the movie promises entertainment and a social message, much like other projects that Hirani has done in the past. The acting looks convincing and there is not an iota of doubt that this movie will be a super hit. 
 
Seeing that Aamir’s last release, Dhoom 3, soared over Rs 530 crores, and is the only <keyword id="143" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Bollywood">Bollywood</keyword> movie to have done that as of yet, we can easily predict a collection of Rs 300 crores for this movie.

India has also started adopting a few western traditions, namely bachelor / bachelorette parties, the idea of bridesmaids, and grand wedding cakes!” said Sana.

 “For grooms we have seen a rise in Jodhpuri Sherwanis. But don't despair. There are plenty of titles here to get excited about. If you're in the mood for a marathon, the bulk of the "Rocky" films, one through five, have been added. Also worth noting on the list is "Rounders," an awesome film about no-limit poker players, and 1979's "Mad Max," a film which propelled Mel Gibson to <a href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0079501/">international stardom</a> (and spawned two sequels, with <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/san-diego-comic-con-what-to-expect-2014-7/">another soon on the way</a>).
As far as television shows, if you didn't catch it when it first aired, Netflix adds Neil deGrasse Tyson's awesome reboot of the Carl Sagan classic "Cosmos" in August. You can find the new series in its entirety added on the 7th.

And these apps, which bring convenience right at our fingertips, are getting bigger and better. All thanks to Microsoft, Apple and other tech giants who are delivering nothing but the best app experience to consumers on their mobile devices. 
 So, what next do they wish to deliver to Indian consumers? To understand this and to know more about the app market, we got into a candid conversation with <keyword id="1945241" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Joseph-Landes">Joseph Landes</keyword>, general manager, Developer &amp; Experience team, <keyword id="28250" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Microsoft-India">Microsoft India</keyword>. Here are the edited excerpts. 
 
What role does your team play in India? 
We help organisations pave their way to the future leveraging the latest technology available. (Pauses and then explains) Don’t you always wonder when you are driving around the country like who put up that bridge, how it actually got from here to over there – like hanging off the edge, building the pieces – so what sort of bridge builders there are today. Similarly, in tech ecosystem, when you know there’s a product coming out like Windows 10, it is essential for an organization to enable an ecosystem for Windows 10. Developers should be acquainted with what Windows 10 is all about and what they can do with it. And this is where we come in. As these organisations analyse what role new technology can play in their business, we help them create an enabling ecosystem. 
 
What level of maturity <keyword id="1914129" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Microsoft-apps">Microsoft apps</keyword> have achieved in the Indian market? 
I fondly remember I came to India 3 years back, when we were getting ready for the launch of Windows 8. Our real big focus was on getting the apps into the store because at that time we didn’t have a very reputable app store. We had an app store in place, but there weren’t much stuff in it. So to gain more footage in India, we concentrated on bridging the app gap that people felt is missing on our store. And after 3 years, I feel good where we are currently. Now, I can claim there’s no Indian app that Android has and we don’t have. 
 
Did you make any changes to your <keyword id="2800227" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="global-app-strategy">global app strategy</keyword> for India? 
As I said before, when we came to India what we wanted to do was to bridge the app gap. And that is precisely what we did: eradicated the local app gap that existed. Our objective is to ensure that Indians to have a ‘wow’ experience on their Windows phone and for this we ensure that all their favourite apps available on other OS platforms are also available on Windows market. 
 
So, how many apps are there on your store? And which among those are your top apps in India? 
Today, we’ve 550,000 apps in the Windows store and most of them are relevant to the Indian consumers often. Naming our top apps is slightly difficult, as I don’t have exact numbers to quote. But on the basis of my experience, I can say IRCTC, Flipkart and Jabong are the most popular India-specific apps. Times news app and Gaana is also popular among Indian audiences. Apps that gain exception traction are the seasonal apps. For instance, when movies like Chennai Express, Dhoom or Krrish hit the theatres, their apps got popular with masses. The sad part, however, is that they eventually die down after a period of time. Obviously, I didn’t include global apps like Facebook, which are popular with people across the globe. 
 
Would we get to see some vernacular Microsoft apps designed specifically for India? 
Well…vernacularity is not one of the big pillars that we want to focus on. Yes, it is a nice and important thing to have, and I can certainly ask developers to write apps that are relevant for their local language, but we don’t plan to do it extensively at this stage. 
As of now, our focus is to cloud enable apps and help developers make universal apps. 
 
Did you observe any differences in the Indian app market from the global market? 
Yes, there indeed is. For Indian audiences, the user interface, graphical interface, design...all matters. After having worked with Indian developers, I can undoubtedly say that they are very good in coding and technicalities—albeit there is some of improvement in terms of design. 
 
Having said that, I still believe, the next big app market would come from India. This country has got the talent that is needed to create wonderful apps like Angry Birds, Candy Crush or more such. I am just waiting to see a brand new gaming app from the Indian developers. 
 
Do Indian consumers app-buying pattern differs from the global audiences? 
The buying pattern in India is very different from many other countries of the world. Mostly, people want something cheaper. I am not generalising this, but this holds true. The trend here is that people are keener to have a free app with some in app purchase. If you look at Xbox, it comes free with some sort of in app purchase. 
 
However, I have seen purchase going up wherever there is direct operator billing system in place. 
 
And, finally what do is your take on the ongoing native vs Cloud mobile apps debate? 
For me, there is a symbiotic collaboration between mobility and cloud. Though native apps are great, I personally feel it will be Cloud mobile apps that would pave way to the future where smartphone won’t look that exciting unless it has great cloud servicing connectivity. Even today, some amazing cloud mobile apps are available on the MS platform. Be it Skype, Bing or One Drive Office 365 – all offer mobility and enable high productivity.
