<a href="http://www.businessweek.com/articles/2013-10-10/jeff-bezos-and-the-age-of-amazon-excerpt-from-the-everything-store-by-brad-stone">Businessweek's Brad Stone</a> has written a lengthy cover story on the Amazon that opens with a bit about Bezos' email style and shows how important <keyword id="169305" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="customer-service">customer service</keyword> is to him.
When customers send Bezos an email complaining bout something Amazon-related, Bezos forwards the message to the appropriate person at the company. The only addition Bezos makes to the email is one character:

The recipient then scrambles to solve the issue and must get his or her reply approved by multiple people before responding to Bezos.
Stone writes:
"When Amazon employees get a Bezos question mark e-mail, they react as though they've discovered a ticking bomb. They've typically got a few hours to solve whatever issue the CEO has flagged and prepare a thorough explanation for how it occurred, a response that will be reviewed by a succession of managers before the answer is presented to Bezos himself. When Amazon Employees Receive These One-Character Emails From Jeff Bezos, They Go Into A Frenzy

Here's the deal:Back in 2013, a class-action lawsuit accused LinkedIn of accessing users' email accounts without their permission and unwittingly using their names to send email invitations to people in their address books.At the time, LinkedIn <a href="http://blog.linkedin.com/2013/09/21/setting-the-record-straight-on-false-accusations/?doing_wp_cron=1443825253.1895248889923095703125">called many of the accusations false</a>. The<a href="https://docs.justia.com/cases/federal/district-courts/california/candce/5:2013cv04303/270092/47"> court agreed that LinkedIn members did actually give the social network permission</a> to use their email contacts to send connection invitations.However, the court found that although LinkedIn members consented to importing their contacts and sending LinkedIn connection requests, they did not consent to the two additional "reminder emails" that LinkedIn would send about those requests.Although LinkedIn still denies any wrongdoing, it has made changes to its product and privacy policy and agreed to pay $13 million to settle the lawsuit. The settlement has not yet been approved, but LinkedIn and the plaintiffs' lawyers have agreed to it, so unless members of the class object, it'll probably be approved next year.Assuming the settlement goes through, what does that mean for you? As a LinkedIn user, you will now see a new disclosure when you send a connection invitation, letting you know that LinkedIn will send two reminder emails to the recipient. By the end of 2015, LinkedIn will also start letting members who are getting reminders stop those reminders from coming by cancelling the invitation. If you got the email, you may also eligible to get some money. LinkedIn's $13 million will be distributed pro rata, meaning that the amount each person get will depends on how many people file claims. Fortunately, they didn't have to use the second one- except in France, where the overexcited local team used both.The Windows Entertainment Pack marketing carried slogans like "No more boring coffee breaks" and "Only a few minutes between meetings? Get in a quick game of Klotski," aimed at Microsoft's then-core audience of business users.Ryan says the ideal demographic for Minesweeper and the games of the Windows Entertainment Pack were "loosely supervised businesspeople."<h2>Blowing up</h2>There was no budget to even do quality testing on the Windows Entertainment Pack. But it became a common joke in the office that Minesweeper was the most-tested product in Microsoft history, Ryan says, because the whole company was addicted.Ryan set a speed record of 6 seconds in the game's beginner mode, and sent out a company-wide e-mail challenge to beat his score.The only one to answer was Bill Gates, who managed to clear it in 5 seconds.The funny part: Gates had actually uninstalled Minesweeperfrom his personal computer, because he was sinking too many hours into it, Ryan says. So Gates invited Ryan up to view his score on the computer in then-Microsoft President Michael Hallman's office, where he had been sneaking off to play."The thought of Bill Gates playing Minesweeper after hours on someone else's computer is quite funny," Ryan says.To show Gates who was boss, proverbially speaking, Ryan's team wrote a simplescript (a "macro") that would automatically click on onecorner of the Minesweeper board repeatedly and then reload the game, until it found a configuration that could be solved in one click- giving a time of one single second."We sent an e-mail to Bill, saying 'Sorry, you got eclipsed by a macro,'" Ryan says.Gates sent back that e-mail about retaining human dignity, with the addendum that he should maybe considermoving upto the "intermediate" difficulty level. By 1992, the series had reportedly sold an impressive<a href="http://www.cgwmuseum.org/galleries/index.php?year=1992&amp;pub=2&amp;id=98">500,000 copies</a>.Minesweeper was so popular, in fact, that in the early days of the Internet, there was a website offering cash prizes in online score competitions, meaning that Ryan had a brief career as a professional Minesweeper player."I can't say it was terribly lucrative," Ryan says.Minesweeper itself was built into every version of Windows up through Windows 8, where it was available as a free, ad-supported game <a href="https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/store/apps/microsoft-minesweeper/9wzdncrfhwcn">from the Windows Store</a>. Windows 10 users can also download this version. And basically every computing device since has had some variation on Minesweeper available.Meanwhile, needless to say, game publishers were proven wrong about the viability of Windows as a gaming platform. Most major publishers offer their titles on the Windows PC, and it's now the platform of choice for the serious competitive gamer.Ryan himself quit Microsoft back in 2000 - his second time quitting the company, technically, since he took a break in 1994 to work on the TV show American Gladiators - and these days, he manages a bar and restaurant in Seattle that he's been a long-time investor in.One final bit of trivia: Ryan says that Minesweeper cheats a little, and always has since its invention: You will never, ever hita mine with your first click. To fulfill her request, here's the distillation of what we've learned about clicky emails.
<h3>Part 1: Only email when you have to. </h3>
Before you click "compose," take a moment:
• Consider this: While we all default to email - the inbox is so fun! - there are lots of ways to communicate, like IM, text, or even a phone call. <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/when-to-email-text-or-call-2014-2">If you need an immediate reply</a> or if the subject is touchy, pick up the phone. 
<h3>Part 2: Write a killer subject line. </h3>
A crisp, actionable subject line has a few key ingredients. They include: 
• Keeping it super short: Inboxes display only the first 60 characters and mobile phones just 25 or 30 characters, so get to the point <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/how-to-write-an-excellent-email-subject-line-2014-3">in eight words or less</a>. 
• Put the important stuff at the beginning: <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/how-to-write-an-excellent-email-subject-line-2014-3">50% of emails are read on mobile</a>, so make sure your good stuff gets read. 
• Use keywords: Everybody gets buried under their inbox now and then, so make your messages <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/how-to-write-an-excellent-email-subject-line-2014-3">readily searchable with keywordy subject lines</a>. 
• Tell 'em if you need a response and when: If you need a reply by end of day, then include, "Reply needed by EOD" in the subject line. 
<h3>Part 3: Put together a brief, awesome body. </h3>
Make the body text glance-able and action-able. Here's how: 
• Stay short: If it's more than 300 words, pick up the phone. 
• Revise: Type out what you want, paste it into a text doc, then type it again.
• Avoid exclamations: Us internet-folk use exclamation points all the time. It makes us look silly.
• Be cautious with humor: Leave the funny stuff out unless you know the recipient well.
• Provide some value: Show the reader what you can do for them.
• Put your email into bullet points: It makes the reading super easy.

It sounds interesting doesn't it? Beautiful space, extraordinary group of gifted individuals, with a potential $100,000 salary. Ain't bad at all. 
Although, it is quite old. The blog <a href="http://workingwithwords.blogspot.co.uk/2004/08/gee-i-wonder-if-this-will-attract-any.html#c5011208747162795533" target="_blank">Working With Words has tracked the ad</a> since the very beginning, when it appeared in a issue of <a href="http://www.newrepublic.com/" target="_blank">The New Republic</a> in the summer of 2004. 
The ad seems to have been posted and reposted for a decade now, only with a different email address and other minor changes every now and then.
Back in 2004 you had to email <a href="mailto:gen8r@spsfind.com">gen8r@spsfind.com</a> for the amazing job. The same address, with a minor variation, was still the recipient in 2006, when the ad was running on page 25 of The New Republic January issue. 
<a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/carol-felsenthal/whos-behind-this-ad-promi_b_166236.html" target="_blank">A journalist-mom on Huffington Post tried to have her daughter recruited in 2006</a>, only to receive no answer. She saw the same ad in the February issue of 2009. 
By that time the ad had also moved online, and in 2008 it was seen on Craisglist, according to a comment on <a href="http://workingwithwords.blogspot.co.uk/2004/08/gee-i-wonder-if-this-will-attract-any.html#c5011208747162795533" target="_blank">Working With Words</a>. It had also added "medical researcher" among the tasks. 
Nobody really knows when the ad originally first ran. John Ettorre, a writer from Ohio who is behind Working With Words, wrote: "we've just been tracking it here for nine years, but I believe the ad began running several years before that." That was in 2013.
So someone has been running this same mysterious classified ad for 10 straight years now.
A Business Insider <keyword id="6354868" type="COUNTRY" weightage="100" keywordseo="UK">UK</keyword> staffer has applied to the ad on Monster. Someone Has Been Running This Mysterious Classified Ad For 10 Straight Years Now

Around $400 million were lost when 700 million private records from 70 organizations were exposed to hackers according to Verizon’s 2015 Data Breach Investigations Report. 
 
The report studied 170 million malware events around the world and found five such events happen every second. In 70% of the cases there’s always a secondary victim. 80% of security threats came from external factors, and 90% of all incidents are people-based. This includes goofing up, getting infected, behaving badly, or losing stuff. 
 
The top three targeted industries are Public, Information, and Financial Services. However, no industry is immune to security lapses.

For the last 3 years, our clothing label Wren has created short videos that accompany the launch of each season's collection. We've always tried to make them fun, sexy and cool, but this is the first time we tried to make one that one was truly worth sharing.
First, here's what happened last week. On Monday, "First Kiss," our Fall 2014 campaign film, quietly launched on <a href="http://www.style.com/fashionshows/video/F2014RTW-WREN">Style.com</a>. Later that day, we uploaded a version to YouTube and started sending that <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IpbDHxCV29A">link</a> to friends and colleagues on e-mail, Facebook, Pinterest, and Twitter.
Right away, people were coming out of the woodwork saying they had seen the video, and telling me they liked it. I had a sense that people were sharing it, but I had no idea how much they would like sharing it. By Monday evening, the video reached the front page of Reddit, where it really took off. The incredible community of savvy, engaged, and proactive people at Reddit are the exact opposite of a passive audience you see at many other high-traffic sites. 
By morning, the video had been viewed almost 2 million times. By the end of the week, it had been viewed more than 61 million times - and counting. It spawned <a href="http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2581820/First-Lick-Jimmy-Fallons-parody-viral-sensation-First-Kiss-featuring-cats-dogs-manages-MORE-adorable-original.html">countless</a> <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2014/03/17/first-gay-hug_n_4979442.html">amazing</a> <a href="http://www.funnyordie.com/videos/8b5da6e721/first-sh-t">parodies</a>, and was covered in The New York Times, Wall Street Journal, CNN, Bloomberg TV, Adweek, Fast Company, Inc, and many more.
So what did I learn by creating what is being <a href="http://www.dazeddigital.com/fashion/article/19226/1/is-first-kiss-the-most-successful-viral-fashion-film-ever-made">called</a> "the most successful fashion film of all time"?
1. People like emotional content. A lot.
When coming up with the concept, we were inspired by the success of sites like Upworthy and Buzzfeed. We saw that people were most likely to share something if they had a strong, positive, emotional response to it. When the piece of content actually makes the viewer cry or feel inspired or happy, they want to share that experience with others.
What struck me most was how people just felt good about themselves when they shared this video. And recipients felt good about the person who sent it to them. Even the inevitable backlash has become part of the video's success.
2. The bored at work audience is desperate for human connection.
The majority of people spend their days staring into screens, which is essentially the exact opposite of kissing. With this in mind, we set out to create an authentic, touching content marketing campaign in the context of the fashion and style space that took people out of their day jobs. Computer screens are usually seen as faceless and impersonal, but I was just amazed to discover the power of digital to spark emotion and human connection. 
3. Direct traffic is important, but it's not everything.
Traffic to the Wren website is up 14,000%, and 96% of those visitors are new to the site. Sales in the online store are up over 13,600% compared to the week before First Kiss was released. While we're delighted with how this video jump started sales, and it certainly shows that an emotional connection with consumers is a genuine business driver, it's not just about that. We deliberately set out to create a film, not a commercial. If First Kiss was full of heavy handed come-ons to "Buy Now!", you better believe that the sharing would have screeched to a halt. What we really wanted to do with this video is to generate lasting brand awareness and love, not just a quick hit sale.
 4. Subtlety is your friend.
It's all about speaking to people with authentic emotion and subtlety. Nobody, especially millennials, wants to be screamed at to buy something. The video was shared an incredible 1.1 million times on Buzzfeed alone. That happened because the content was about the content, not about the clothes. And all of this from a simple video from a small American brand that is largely unknown globally.
5. The power is shifting.
This signifies a power shift. With more than 2 billion people online, the Internet has changed not only the way that clothes are sold, but also the way they should be marketed. We are in an age where the prospect can steer around what they are uninterested in. You could have a huge marketing budget, but if no one is engaged enough to want to share your content and ideas, then it's just not working.
This is good news. Social can make ads great again. It gives you space to tell a story. Rather than beating someone over the head with your message, or tricking them into clicking with clever, misleading headlines, the onus is on making quality, connecting content. Shock! Horror! Why shouldn't companies set out to make content that people find genuinely interesting and engaging? We did it, and we couldn't be happier with the results.

FACEBOOK IMPROVES AD TARGETING: The world's largest social network announced a number of changes to its Ads API program, which includes all of its non-FBX ads. Among them, Facebook has improved the logic of its ad targeting method. Previously, when an advertiser selected "parents" and "photography" as parameters for targeting users, the audience contracted to those people "who are parents OR interested in photography." Now, those parameters will be defined as "parents who are interested in photography," which will provide advertisers with a more specific target audience. 
What's more, Facebook claims it has improved demographic targeting for a user's workplace, education, job title types, and relationship status. Advertisers can also now see when a user has added a life event to their timeline, such as telling their network that they bought a house or a car. Facebook began <a href="http://allfacebook.com/add-life-events-timeline_b127567">prompting users in December</a> to add these life events to their timelines, and the motive now seems to be advertising. 
The changes means that advertisers can now target Facebook users based on behaviors. "These categories are specific to a user's particular actions, past purchase behavior, or purchase propensity," according to the company's ad roadmap. Testing of this new targeting type will begin in February. 
Facebook also announced that it is sunsetting sponsored stories. When the social network <a href="http://techcrunch.com/2013/06/06/facebook-simplifies-ads/">simplified its ad units last year</a>, one of the major changes was it added social context to page post and page like ads (e.g., a user sees an ad for a company because his friend liked the brand's Facebook page). Previously, advertisers had to purchase an ad such as a page post ad, in addition to a sponsored story. The sponsored story then added the social context to the ad. Now that page post and page like ads come with social context by default, Facebook will be discontinuing sponsored stories after April. Between 2006 and 2008, the majority of content on Reddit was related to programming, science, and politics, which reflected the site's roots as a community for technology professionals. In 2011, photo-related content began to take over the conversation on Reddit. Fast forward to today, and photos are still a large share of content being submitted to Reddit, but the topics range from the mainstream to the obscure, representative of Reddit evolving into a mainstream web property, a place for photo-sharing and content distribution. YOU'VE GOT GOOGLE+ MAIL: Google is integrating its social network Google+ with its webmail product on a more intimate level. Users can now email their Google+ contact via Gmail, even if they don't have that person's direct email address. Users can opt-out of the feature by adjusting their Gmail settings under a section called "Gmail via Google+." 
When you begin typing a recipient's name in an email (via Gmail), the service will recommend people who are your Google+ connections. 
Google+ is becoming tightly integrated with all of Google's major products. The social service is helping Google identify the billions of people who use its products every day. (<a href="http://gmailblog.blogspot.com/2014/01/reach-people-you-know-more-easily.html">Google Blog</a>) 
SNAPCHAT APOLOGIZES: Snapchat posted an apology yesterday, eight days after 4.6 million users had their phone numbers and usernames exposed. The company said it updated the app to allow users to disable the "Find Friends" feature, which was vulnerable enough for hackers to exploit. (<a href="http://blog.snapchat.com/post/72768002320/find-friends-improvements">Snapchat Blog</a>)
SNAPCHAT CHOOSES GOOGLE OVER AMAZON: Amazon's collection of cloud computing services (AWS) are a favorite among top web properties, such as Netflix, Pinterest, Reddit, Airbnb, and Spotify, to name a few. Why? Because Amazon can provide its clients with a lot of computing capacity (read: fast website response times) at a low cost. However, Snapchat built its app on top of Google App Engine, which offers infrastructure services that compete with Amazon Web Services. In an interview last year, Snapchat CTO Bobby Murphy said that he believed, "Google is scaling out and willing to invest in this platform," and that "when it comes to scale, Google could offer more than AWS." 
Amazon is obviously going to continue investing in its cloud computing services as well though, and it would be very cumbersome for a web property the size of Netflix to migrate to a different set of cloud computing services. So, Amazon will continue to support major web properties, but Snapchat is a valuable case study for Google, giving it an opportunity to demonstrate the strong performance of its cloud computing services as well. Facebook Announces Major Improvements To Ad Targeting

Willpower and discipline are overrated.
In his book, <a href="http://a-fwd.com/es=farstrblo068-21&amp;it=farstrblo0a-21&amp;fr=farstrblo08-21&amp;de=farstrblo07-21&amp;uk=farstrblo-21&amp;ca=farst-20&amp;com=farnamstreet-20&amp;asin-es=0143122231&amp;asin-it=0143122231&amp;asin-fr=0143122231&amp;asin-de=0143122231&amp;asin-uk=0143122231&amp;asin-ca=0143122231&amp;asin-com=0143122231" target="_blank">Willpower: Rediscovering the Greatest Human Strength</a>, Roy Baumeister contends that the most successful people don't make better decisions because of their willpower. Rather, they develop routines.
These routines reduce the number of decisions we need to make (and also reduce stress). Thus it becomes easier to use your limited resources of self-control to avoid, rather than solve, crises.
Developing these routines are key. In Michael Lewis' <a href="http://www.farnamstreetblog.com/2012/09/michael-lewis-profiles-president-obama/" target="_blank">profile of President Obama</a>, he writes:
<blockquote>
You also need to remove from your life the day-to-day problems that absorb most people for meaningful parts of their day. "You'll see I wear only gray or blue suits," (Obama) said. "I'm trying to pare down decisions. I don't want to make decisions about what I'm eating or wearing. Because I have too many other decisions to make." He mentioned research that shows the simple act of making decisions degrades one's ability to make further decisions. It's why shopping is so exhausting. "You need to focus your decision-making energy. You need to routinize yourself. You can't be going through the day distracted by trivia."
</blockquote>
If we spend energy making too many little decisions, we'll have less to make the more important decisions. Some companies are cluing into this.
"I think that the leadership at Google has an intuitive understanding of human nature and the way attention is a limited resource," says David Rock author of <a href="http://a-fwd.com/es=farstrblo068-21&amp;it=farstrblo0a-21&amp;fr=farstrblo08-21&amp;de=farstrblo07-21&amp;uk=farstrblo-21&amp;ca=farst-20&amp;com=farnamstreet-20&amp;asin-es=0061771295&amp;asin-it=0061771295&amp;asin-fr=0061771295&amp;asin-de=0061771295&amp;asin-uk=0061771295&amp;asin-ca=0061771295&amp;asin-com=0061771295" target="_blank">Your Brain at Work: Strategies for Overcoming Distraction, Regaining Focus, and Working Smarter All Day Long</a>.
Google <a href="http://www.farnamstreetblog.com/2009/12/david-rock-your-brain-at-work-google-talk/" target="_blank">organizes its environment</a> to allow employees to make fewer decisions.
<blockquote>
The formula at Club Med is to include pretty much everything in the price: activities, food, even drinks, giving you fewer decisions to make. Now I know the research on decision making, and how making any conscious decision uses a measurable amount of glucose, but I wasn't prepared for how relaxing it was not having to think anywhere near as much, even about simple things. It turned out to be a remarkably restful holiday.
When you work at Google, you get to save your limited mental resources for the most important decisions. As Google's CEO Eric Schmidt said, "Let's face it: programmers want to program, they don't want to do their laundry. So we make it easy for them to do both."
…Other companies could do well to do the same, noticing what their employees end up wasting their attention on, and doing something about it. It's sure making me rethink my own company's benefits policies.
… [A]s well as minimizing distractions and respecting attention, Google does other things to help it's people be more productive, in particular being more productive at complex problem solving.

<h1>2. Focus</h1>
Your routines should be geared towards helping you focus.
In <a href="http://a-fwd.com/es=farstrblo068-21&amp;it=farstrblo0a-21&amp;fr=farstrblo08-21&amp;de=farstrblo07-21&amp;uk=farstrblo-21&amp;ca=farst-20&amp;com=farnamstreet-20&amp;asin-es=0061771295&amp;asin-it=0061771295&amp;asin-fr=0061771295&amp;asin-de=0061771295&amp;asin-uk=0061771295&amp;asin-ca=0061771295&amp;asin-com=0061771295" target="_blank">Your Brain at Work</a>, David Rock writes:

One of the most effective distraction-management techniques is simple: switch off all communication devices during any thinking work. Your brain prefers to focus on things right in front of you. It takes less effort. If you are trying to focus on a subtle mental thread, allowing yourself to be distracted is like stopping pain to enjoy a mild pleasure: it's too hard to resist! Blocking out external distractions altogether, especially if you get a lot of them, seems to be one of the best strategies for improving mental performance

Combining routine and focus is the sweet spot. Here are two examples you can put into practice today.
First, Mark McGuinness argues in <a href="http://a-fwd.com/es=farstrblo068-21&amp;it=farstrblo0a-21&amp;fr=farstrblo08-21&amp;de=farstrblo07-21&amp;uk=farstrblo-21&amp;ca=farst-20&amp;com=farnamstreet-20&amp;asin-es=1477800670&amp;asin-it=1477800670&amp;asin-fr=1477800670&amp;asin-de=1477800670&amp;asin-uk=1477800670&amp;asin-ca=1477800670&amp;asin-com=1477800670" target="_blank">Manage Your Day-to-Day</a> that you should <a href="http://www.farnamstreetblog.com/2013/05/the-single-most-important-change-you-can-make-in-your-working-habits/" target="_blank">put your most important work first</a>. It's much easier to deal with less taxing things, like email, later.
<blockquote>
The single most important change you can make in your working habits is to switch to creative work first, reactive work second. This means blocking off a large chunk of time every day for creative work on your own priorities, with the phone and e-mail off.
</blockquote>
Another way to think of this is to pay yourself first: you are your own most valuable client. That's <a href="http://www.farnamstreetblog.com/2013/05/the-buffett-formula-how-to-get-smarter/" target="_blank">what Warren Buffett and Charlie Munger do</a>.
Another useful routine is to deal with email in batches, say from 10-11 and 3-4 each day. The rest of the day, turn the email client off so you're not constantly interrupted with "new mail." Consider the wise counsel of Herbert Simon:
<blockquote>
What information consumes is rather obvious: it consumes the attention of its recipients. Hence a wealth of information creates a poverty of attention, and a need to allocate that attention efficiently among the overabundance of information sources that might consume it.
</blockquote>
<h1>3. Practice</h1>
Experience doesn't always make you better.
In <a href="http://a-fwd.com/es=farstrblo068-21&amp;it=farstrblo0a-21&amp;fr=farstrblo08-21&amp;de=farstrblo07-21&amp;uk=farstrblo-21&amp;ca=farst-20&amp;com=farnamstreet-20&amp;asin-es=1591842948&amp;asin-it=1591842948&amp;asin-fr=1591842948&amp;asin-de=1591842948&amp;asin-uk=1591842948&amp;asin-ca=1591842948&amp;asin-com=1591842948" target="_blank">Talent Is Overrated</a>, Geoff Colvin writes:

In field after field, when it comes to centrally important skills - stockbrokers recommending stocks, parole officers predicting recidivism, college admissions officials judging applicants - people with lots of experience were no better at their jobs than those with less experience.

Wait. What? That doesn't make sense.
We typically operate in the OK Plateau.
Bestselling author of <a href="http://a-fwd.com/es=farstrblo068-21&amp;it=farstrblo0a-21&amp;fr=farstrblo08-21&amp;de=farstrblo07-21&amp;uk=farstrblo-21&amp;ca=farst-20&amp;com=farnamstreet-20&amp;asin-es=0143120530&amp;asin-it=0143120530&amp;asin-fr=0143120530&amp;asin-de=0143120530&amp;asin-uk=0143120530&amp;asin-ca=0143120530&amp;asin-com=0143120530" target="_blank">Moonwalking with Einstein</a> and USA Memory Champion in 2005, Joshua Foer explains:
<blockquote>
In the 1960s, psychologists identified three stages that we pass through in the acquisition of new skills. We start in the "cognitive phase," during which we're intellectualizing the task, discovering new strategies to perform better, and making lots of mistakes. We're consciously focusing on what we're doing. Then we enter the "associative stage," when we're making fewer errors, and gradually getting better. Finally, we arrive at the "autonomous stage," when we turn on autopilot and move the skill to the back of our proverbial mental filing cabinet and stop paying conscious attention.
The OK Plateau is that point when we reach the autonomous stage and consciously or unconsciously say to ourselves, "I am OK at how good I have gotten at this task," and stop paying attention to our improvement. We all reach OK Plateaus in almost everything we do. We learn to drive when we're teenagers, and at first we improve rapidly, but eventually we are no longer a threat to old ladies crossing the street, and we stop getting appreciably better.
</blockquote>
If we want to perform better beyond some basic competence researchers say we must engage in <a href="http://www.farnamstreetblog.com/2012/07/what-is-deliberate-practice/" target="_blank">deliberate practice</a>. These are designed, mindful efforts, to master even the smallest detail of success. To get better you have to get out of the autonomous stage.
One way to stay out of the autonomous stage is deliberate practice. Expert musicians, for example, focus on the hardest parts and not the easy ones that would allow them to sink into autopilot. The way to get better is to push your limits.
Unfortunately, deliberate practice isn't something that most of us understand, let alone engage in on a daily basis. This helps explain why we can work at something for decades without really improving our performance.
Colvin continues:
<blockquote>
Deliberate practice is characterized by several elements, each worth examining. It is activity designed specifically to improve performance, often with a teacher's help; it can be repeated a lot; feedback on results is continuously available; it's highly demanding mentally, whether the activity is purely intellectual, such as chess or business-related activities, or heavily physical, such as sports; and it isn't much fun.
</blockquote>
<h3>Consider a coach.</h3>
In his fascinating <a href="http://www.farnamstreetblog.com/2011/10/top-athletes-and-singers-have-coaches-should-you/" target="_blank">New Yorker article</a>, Doctor Atul Gawande writes, "In theory, people can do this themselves."
<blockquote>
But most people do not know where to start or how to proceed. Expertise, as the formula goes, requires going from unconscious incompetence to conscious incompetence to conscious competence and finally to unconscious competence. The coach provides the outside eyes and ears, and makes you aware of where you're falling short.
</blockquote>
In other words, the coach provides objective feedback and structure.
Commenting on what it's like to have a surgical coach, Gawande offers:
<blockquote>
Osteen (Gawande's coach) watched, silent and blank-faced the entire time, taking notes. My cheeks burned; I was mortified. I wished I'd never asked him along. I tried to be rational about the situation - the patient did fine. But I had let Osteen see my judgment fail; I'd let him see that I may not be who I want to be.
This is why it will never be easy to submit to coaching, especially for those who are well along in their career. I'm ostensibly an expert. I'd finished long ago with the days of being tested and observed. I am supposed to be past needing such things. Why should I expose myself to scrutiny and fault-finding?
</blockquote>
It takes a special person to bring in a coach mid-career and subject themselves to "scrutiny and fault-finding."
Maybe you're thinking, I don't need a coach because "I'm my own worst critic." That may be the case, however it is really hard, but not impossible, to be your own (objective) coach. You need structure and objective feedback.
(I don't want to get into too much nuance, but you also have to think about feedback systems. Part of deliberate practice is immediate and constant feedback. This enables course correction. The time-to-feedback can derail deliberate practice if it's too long.)
<h1>4. Exercise</h1>
In <a href="http://a-fwd.com/es=farstrblo068-21&amp;it=farstrblo0a-21&amp;fr=farstrblo08-21&amp;de=farstrblo07-21&amp;uk=farstrblo-21&amp;ca=farst-20&amp;com=farnamstreet-20&amp;asin-es=0979777747&amp;asin-it=0979777747&amp;asin-fr=0979777747&amp;asin-de=0979777747&amp;asin-uk=0979777747&amp;asin-ca=0979777747&amp;asin-com=0979777747" target="_blank">Brain Rules</a>, John Medina <a href="http://www.farnamstreetblog.com/2013/03/brain-rules-12-things-we-know-about-how-the-brain-works/" target="_blank">explores the relationship between exercise and mental alertness</a>:
<blockquote>
Just about every mental test possible was tried. No matter how it was measured, the answer was consistently yes: A lifetime of exercise can result in a sometimes astonishing elevation in cognitive performance, compared with those who are sedentary. Exercisers outperform couch potatoes in tests that measure long-term memory, reasoning, attention, problem-solving, even so-called fluid-intelligence tasks. These tasks test the ability to reason quickly and think abstractly, improvising off previously learned material in order to solve a new problem. Essentially, exercise improves a whole host of abilities prized in the classroom and at work.

<h1>5. Rest</h1>
Taking time to rest won't make you a slacker. While the corporate culture of "back-to-back" meetings from 9-5 may seem "cool," it is actually crazy. Rest is a critical component of creating and sustaining excellence.
