About 50 per cent of <keyword id="471072" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="indian-consumers" source="Orion">Indian consumers</keyword> are now open to <keyword id="15455926" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="buying-EVs" source="Orion">buying EVs</keyword>, albeit with a caveat, while 54 per cent of consumers are still concerned about EV quality, a report showed on Monday, adding that EV range anxiety now appears to be a misperception. As per the report by CyberMedia Research (CMR), the consumers are not shying away from EVs owing to 'EV range anxiety' or 'upfront costs', or 'limited EV charging infrastructure'. "For long, limited EV charging infrastructure and range anxiety have been construed as barriers for EV adoption. However, automotive OEMs have already designed EVs with a sufficient range of up to 200 kms or more," said John Martin, analyst, smart mobility practice, CMR. "The potential consumer for EVs is more concerned by the overall EV quality. EV quality includes not just external build quality but refers to the overall quality of internal components used - including battery and others," Martin added. With a strong government policy push, including its flagship EV scheme, faster adoption and manufacturing of <keyword id="6354973" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Electric-vehicles" source="Orion">electric vehicles</keyword> (FAME), and more automotive OEMs prioritising EVs, India's EV momentum is gaining momentum. India's EV charging infrastructure is accelerating, with more public EV charging stations coming up. Alongside, cross-industry collaborations in the EV ecosystem will also contribute to the ramping-up of charging infrastructure. "Driven by ongoing policy thrust at the central and state levels for EV infrastructure development, alongwith upstream R&amp;D in battery development will ensure a significant uptick in ramping-up e-mobility. For OEMs, the focus should be on continuous awareness generation around the quality and potential of EVs," John noted. 54% Indians consumers concerned about EV quality, not range: Report

<ul><li>A report by Ola Mobility Institute said that shared transportation will be a major contributing factor in the growth of EVs. </li><li>Two-wheelers and three-wheelers have the highest demand in India. </li><li>However, given India’s infrastructural problems from bad roads to lack of charging stations, the EV journey has multiple challenges. </li></ul>On the Indian roads one cannot miss the overwhelming presence of two-wheelers and three-wheelers. So it’s no surprise that they will form a major part of India’s electric vehicles mission. A report on electric mobility published by Ola Mobility Institute said that it’s shared transportation that can only push the growth of EVs. India has been shifting its gears in transportation to embrace Electric Vehicles (EVs). While news about India’s top auto manufacturers introducing electric vehicle manufacturing doesn’t surprise one now, questions still lurk about the country’s acceptance to EVs because of lack of proper infrastructure. “Unlike Western models, India may not easily kick start its electric journey by deploying premium electric cars. Instead, it makes sense to focus on electrifying vehicles with the highest demand and utility in the Indian context: two-wheelers and three-wheelers. The rickshaw is already proliferating in electric variants, suggesting it is both viable and practical. Thus, appropriate prioritisation of vehicle segments for electrification may prove to be critical to the adoption of e-mobility,” stated the report. Ola’s report is based on its pilot project in Nagpur, while its on a mission to bring 1 million EVs on Indian roads by 2022. The government expects that 25% of all vehicles on the roads will be EVs by 2030. And the push has to come with two-wheelers and three-wheelers, which today occupy over 80% of total Indian vehicles and also contribute to 35% of pollution in India, according to a report by NITI Aayog and World Energy Council. The Indian government too has been promoting the use and manufacture of EVs. Under the FAME II scheme, the government is <a href="https://tech.economictimes.indiatimes.com/news/corporate/government-tightens-localisation-norms-for-electric-vehicles/68294648">offering</a> direct subsidies of upto ₹88 billion to consumers who are adopting EVs. However, given India’s infrastructural problems from bad roads to lack of charging stations, the EV journey has a few speed bumps. Another challenge is the high electricity tariff. Ola’s report states, “Although the cost of electricity shrunk significantly post the implementation of special EV tariff in October 2018, the tariff continues to be unfavorable for TCO (Total Cost Opportunity) economics to work.” With drivers too having had little or no exposure to electric vehicles, it is another task when it comes to the adoption of EVs. In fact, Ola’s initial plan of electric mobility in Nagpur also faced trouble when drivers started reportedly returning the vehicles.

All this not only opens doors for <keyword id="107096" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Tesla" source="Orion">Tesla</keyword> but also signals India's readiness to welcome significant investments and foster a new ecosystem for EVs and their component suppliers. "While the conventional automobile manufacturing ecosystem is mature, the building blocks for a robust smart car manufacturing ecosystem, from the battery to infotainment to sensors to full ADAS/ADS, beckon," said Research Vice President Neil Shah. "This would span from the likes of Qualcomm and MediaTek designing and offering advanced auto components to BlackBerry providing safety and security software, to Foxconn reducing barriers for new entrants to India with its innovative MIH consortium-based 'localised' design and manufacturing model," Shah explained.

Indian firms pay 10 times the interest on loans for green infra as those in Japan

The Centre is considering a request from Elon Musk-run <keyword id="107096" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="tesla" source="Orion">Tesla</keyword> to lower tariffs for imported electric vehicles (EVs) as the company looks into setting up a plant in the country, a media report said on Monday. According to the Financial Times, citing sources, the automaker has asked the government for an initial tariff concession that would offset <keyword id="3658" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="india" source="Orion">India</keyword>'s steep customs duties of 70 per cent for cars under $40,000 and 100 per cent for cars above $40,000. "Their view has always been that they need some tariff concessions at least in the interim period. It would have some kind of sunset clause," one of the officials was quoted as saying. Tesla had asked for the concession as a condition for constructing a plant in the country. The reduced tariffs would apply to all EV manufacturers. The officials stated that the reduced rate under consideration would be 15 per cent for EVs of all prices, but that the policy had not yet been agreed upon within the government, the report mentioned. "We want to create a package which is good for India and which doesn't become a curated package for one company. Others are free to take advantage of this window, subject to meeting these kinds of requirements," one of the officials stated. In September, a report said that Tesla is planning to build a factory for battery storage in India and has submitted a proposal for the same to the government. The electric car-maker proposed supporting the country's battery storage capabilities with its 'Powerwall' during recent meetings. Musk is also aiming to build a Tesla supply system in India. New Delhi, Nov 29 () MG Motor India on Friday said it has partnered with battery life-cycle management firm Umicore for recycling end-of-life batteries of its upcoming electric SUV ZS EV.
 The partnership will allow end-of-life ZS EV batteries to be recycled, thus ensuring greater peace of mind to MG customers about their ecological footprint, the company said in a statement.
 "Our partnership with Umicore focuses on end-of-life applications for used EV battery packs and ensures that exhausted battery packs of MG ZS EV are recycled in keeping with the global best standards, to ensure environment-friendly battery disposal," MG Motor India Chief Commercial Officer Gaurav Gupta said.
 Over the past few months, the company has worked towards creating the right ecosystem for its customers ahead of the launch of the ZS EV, including charging infrastructure, he added.
 Umicore India Country General Manager and spokesperson Kedar Rele said MG is addressing concerns about the disposal of end-of-life EV batteries for recycling.
 The company will offer its 'closed loop' sustainable recycling solution that ensures minimal waste and impact on the environment.
 "This is vital to the commitment of facilitating EV adoption and catalysing India's nascent EV revolution," Kele added.

MG Motor India partners Umicore for recycling batteries of upcoming electric SUV ZS EV

South Korean auto major <keyword id="20190176" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="hyundai-motor" source="keywords">Hyundai Motor</keyword> Group on Thursday said it is looking to expand the annual production capacity across <keyword id="19906087" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Hyundai" source="keywords">Hyundai</keyword> and <keyword id="19997865" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Kia" source="keywords">Kia</keyword> brands in India to 15 lakh units per year, as part of its mid-to-long-term strategy in the country. Outlining the company's strategy for the India market, Hyundai Motor Group (HMG) Executive Chair Euisun Chung said the automaker plans to roll out more <keyword id="19962337" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="EVs" source="keywords">EVs</keyword>, while also utilising the country as an export hub for the neighbouring countries. Chung visited India on April 23 to review the group's mid-to-long-term strategies to solidify its position as a leading mobility provider. Hyundai Motor Group is expanding its manufacturing footprint in the Indian region with the establishment of an annual production system of 1.5 million vehicle units for Hyundai Motor India and Kia India combined, the automaker stated. Hyundai Motor India will start operating its Pune plant, acquired from General Motors last year, in the second half of the next year. Hyundai Motor is currently making improvements to the facility to create a production hub capable of building more than 200,000 units annually, it said. With the addition of the Chennai plant's production capacity of 824,000 units, Hyundai Motor will have an annual production capacity of over one million units when combined with the Pune plant, it added. Besides, Kia India's yearly production capacity will also be expanded to 431,000 units within the first half of this year. "Combined together, Hyundai Motor Group will have the ability to produce approximately 1.5 million units annually in India," HMG said. The group also plans to expand its EV lineup and create an EV ecosystem to accelerate customer uptake and expand charging infrastructure. It will also strengthen its SUV sales leadership in India, HMG said. Hyundai Motor India plans to unveil its first locally produced EV in India next year, it said. Starting with the mass production of its first <keyword id="21425421" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="electric-SUV-model" source="keywords">electric SUV model</keyword> at the Chennai plant at the end of 2024, the company plans to further produce five EV models by 2030, it added. Hyundai Motor India will also utilize its sales network hubs, expanding the number of EV charging stations to 485 by 2030, HMG said. Kia India will also start production of its local EV model in 2025 and plans to further expand its EV models, it added. The company will also focus on building EV charging infrastructure, it stated. "India is among the fastest-growing economies globally, and as this growth continues the strategic importance of Hyundai Motor India will only increase," Chung said while addressing employees in a town hall meeting. He further said, "by leveraging our strong reputation and competitive quality in India, we aim to expand exports to neighbouring countries, making India the global export hub to boost our regional market competitiveness." Chung said that by around 2030, the automaker expects to see a substantial expansion in the EV market in India. "In anticipation of this evolution, Hyundai is focused on developing locally tailored EVs aimed at establishing us as a leading global EV brand," he added. "We also plan to proactively build charging stations at strategic locations 'including dealerships' to facilitate the adoption of EVs," Chung said. Hyundai plans to scale up production capacity, introduce more EVs in India

Interestingly, the penetration of electric buses is higher than that of electric cars, with 3.20% of all new buses sold in 2024 being electric. This trend highlights the growing importance of sustainable public transport solutions as cities aim to reduce emissions and promote cleaner alternatives in mass transit. "Electric vehicles offer a very compelling solutions because they do not emit any tailpipe emissions so that improves their air quality that reduces their air pollution. It also reduces the carbon emission so it helps India to meet with its climate goals and generally, electric vehicles have lower operating cost as compared to the IC engine vehicles," said Samhita Shiledar, Director RMI to ANI. On a state-wise level, the Vaahan dashboard data highlighted that Goa leads the country in EV penetration, with 14.20% of all new vehicles sold this year being electric. Tripura ranks second, followed by Chandigarh in third place. Delhi also stands out with a 10.72% penetration of EVs in total vehicle sales, showcasing the capital's push towards sustainable urban mobility. On the other hand, Himachal Pradesh reported the lowest EV penetration, with only 1.09% of new vehicles sold being electric. In terms of total number of EV sales across all segments in India, the two-wheeler category dominates the electric vehicle market in India, accounting for approximately 51% of total EV sales this year. As World EV Day highlights the global commitment to cleaner mobility solutions, India's data reflects a promising shift but a long way to go towards electrification across various vehicle segments.
