He was fired within the hour, according to a <keyword id="11921506" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="lawsuit" source="Orion">lawsuit</keyword> filed by the US <keyword id="12011978" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="department-of-labor" source="Orion">Department of Labor</keyword>, management telling him that "his only job was to fix cars."In the lawsuit, filed this month in the US District Court for the Western District of Texas, the department says the whistleblower is due back pay and punitive damages, arguing that his only offense was warning others about a threat to their health at Hi Tech Motorcars in Austin, Texas - which is no crime at all."This employee acted out of real concern for their safety and that of their coworkers, and their actions are protected under federal <keyword id="11899820" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="law" source="Orion">law</keyword>," the Labor Department's John Rainwater said in a statement.According to the October 6 complaint, the employee was distressed to learn in December 2020 that there had been an outbreak at the car dealership, which sells high-end vehicles from Porsche, Bentley, and Rolls-Royce. Management did nothing to inform others of their potential exposure, according to the lawsuit, so the employee did it himself."It has come to my attention that an employee has tested positive for COVID-19," the man wrote in an email to staff. "I feel it is important to inform all employees of the current situation."Within the hour, the employee was fired, the company maintaining that he had outed the employee who had tested positive - which, the Department of Labor says, he did not.Defendants are accused of violating federal whistleblower protections enforced by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, which encourages workers to <a href="https://www.whistleblowers.gov/">report potential health hazards</a> at the workplace. Instead of large-language models or all-purpose AI tools, these startups focus on specific sectors. From coworking spaces to weather prediction to military defense, they want to leverage AI in a niche.Outside of AI, some familiar faces remain. A new trend emerges. Rinse and repeat.But unlike previous trends — social-media apps of the late aughts or the 2010s' personal-finance tools — AI comes with a massive price tag. It's not cheap to run AI models. It's also not immediately clear how they can generate revenue.Historically, the tech industry doesn't mind burning cash for the sake of growth and innovation, but times are different.We're no longer in the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/zirp-end-of-cushy-big-tech-job-perks-mass-layoffs-2024-2">zero interest rate phenomenon</a>, and the biggest companies in the world are struggling to pitch investors on their AI investments being worth it.Now, cracks are starting to show in the AI ecosystem despite being less than two years into the revolution.That's not to say AI is overblown. The tech will have a massive impact on the world. Unwinding the widely popular carry trade that relied on the Japanese yen <a target="_blank" href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/news/stocks/stock-market-crash-carry-trade-yen-boj-interest-rates-selloff-2024-8">will still take some time</a>, according to JPMorgan. Arindam Sandilya, the bank's cohead of global FX strategy, said speculative investors unwinding the trade are only "50% to 60% complete."</li><li>The AI hype bubble might be about to burst. The panicked sell-off in stocks might mark the <a target="_blank" href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/news/stocks/stock-market-crash-ai-stocks-bubble-recession-prediction-economy-outlook-2024-8">beginning of the end of the AI craze</a> among investors, market strategist Paul Dietrick said. He pointed to similarities between the recent sell-off and the dot-com crash.</li><li>Some Wall Street strategists smell blood in the water. Earlier this week, Yoav Gallant, Israel's defense minister, said in a TV press statement, <a href="https://www.thetimes.co.uk/article/no-ceasefire-but-tactical-little-pauses-in-gaza-says-netanyahu-q5cck27mk" target="_blank" rel="noopener">per The Times.</a> Sinwar was "hiding in his bunker without contact with his associates," Gallant said before vowing to eliminate him.He said that Sinwar, the overall head of Hamas in the Gaza enclave, who has been described by Israeli officials as "a dead man walking," was surrounded, although he did not specify where.On Friday, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) reported that its troops of the 7th Brigade had raided the office of Sinwar's brother, Muhammad, capturing military documents and killing 30 "terrorists."Sinwar was freed in a prisoner swap after years in an Israeli prison in 2011. His parents fled the southern city of Ashkelon in Israel. He pursued Arabic studies at the Islamic University of Gaza.In the 1980s, Sinwar's job was to kill Gazans who collaborated with Israel, per The Economist.He spent 24 years in prison for crimes including the murder of two Israeli soldiers and four Palestinian men he had accused of collaborating.<a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/hamas-gaza-leader-survived-tumor-operation-israel-reports-2023-10?r=US&amp;IR=T">Israeli doctors reportedly saved his life</a> in 2006 after operating on a brain tumor during his incarceration.He left prison fluent in Hebrew after his release in a prisoner swap for the Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit, who was being held hostage in Gaza.In 2015, the US Department of State designated Sinwar a terrorist."We will take down the border, and we will tear their hearts from their bodies," Sinwar reportedly said in 2018, as quoted by the IDF.On October 7, under Sinwar's leadership, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/11-israel-hamas-dramatic-images-surprise-attack-israel-2023-10" target="_blank" rel="noopener">hundreds of Hamas fighters breached the fences surrounding Gaza</a>, after drones knocked out hi-tech observation towers and a huge rocket barrage was unleashed on Israel. They poured into southern Israel's surrounding kibbutzes and towns, committing massacres in coordinated terrorist attacks.Former Israeli Prime Minister Yair Lapid dubbed him the <a href="https://www.israelnationalnews.com/news/378486" target="_blank" rel="noopener">"new face of evil</a>.""That man is in our sights," said Lt. Col. Richard Hecht, a military spokesman, per The New York Times. "He's a dead man walking, and we will get to that man," he said. He is considered to be a key figure connecting Hamas's politburo with the Izz al-Din al-Qassam Brigades, Hamas' armed wing, per The European Council on Foreign Relations.Israel has arrested Sinwar multiple times, and he has spent 24 years in prison, per the European Council of Foreign Relations. He was released during a prisoner exchange with Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit in 2011.A 2022 security analysis determined that the <a href="https://www.inss.org.il/strategic_assessment/pa-weakness/">Palestinian Authority's weakness and Israel's inaction</a> on undermining Hamas' control strengthened Sinwar and Hamas' leadership. Hamas was able to connect various fronts against Israel, per The Institute for National Security Studies of Tel-Aviv UniversityThe analysis predicted that the temporary calm amid Sinwar and Hamas' increased power would exact a "heavy toll from Israel in longer, strategic terms."The IDF said destroying Gaza's leadership was its ultimate goal as it prepares to launch a ground invasion of the besieged city, The New York Times reports. Thousands of Hamas militants are believed to have entrenched themselves in an elaborate network of underground tunnels in northern Gaza. The invasion's goal will be "the rout of Hamas and the elimination of its leaders after the slaughter they perpetrated," said Rear Adm. Daniel Hagari, the IDF's chief spokesman, per The Times.

Elon Musk's rants could signal a bigger problem

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Authorities across China have been using new hi-tech surveillance methods to monitor citizens in an attempt to stem the coronavirus outbreak.</li><li>They include flying drones to make sure people are wearing masks, facial-recognition cameras, and making people download software to track their location.</li><li>This kind of surveillance is already present in Xinjiang, the homeland of the Uighurs, where China operates an invasive, 21st-century police state.</li><li>Experts told Business Insider that this mass data collection could stay the norm even after the coronavirus becomes less of a public-health threat.</li><li><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/?hprecirc-bullet">Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories</a>.</li></ul>China has dramatically ramped up its data-collection efforts in its efforts to stem its coronavirus outbreak, which has infected <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/china-virus-everything-we-know-deadly-2019-ncov-wuhan-spread-2020-1">more than 80,000 people</a> in the country alone.In pursuit of this, authorities have rolled out a slew of new tactics to monitor and track potential cases.The Chinese government has long been criticized for its invasive use of technology, and the coronavirus outbreak has appeared to strengthen its case for harvesting more data - a situation experts fear could become permanent.The methods include:<ul><li><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/china-uses-drones-to-patrol-citizens-during-wuhan-coronavirus-outbreak-2020-1">Monitoring the populace via drones</a>, which tell individual people to put on a mask or go indoors.</li><li>New <a href="https://www.sensetime.com/news/view/id/200.html">facial-recognition software</a> that measures people's temperatures and identifies them based on body and facial data - <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/coronavirus-brings-chinas-surveillance-state-out-of-the-shadows-2020-2">even when they are wearing masks</a>.</li><li>Checking phone data to see if people have <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/china-new-app-wuhan-virus-check-met-infected-person-2020-2">come within close range of a coronavirus patient</a>.</li><li>Giving police <a href="https://twitter.com/paulmozur/status/1235173825135792128">helmets fitted out with facial-recognition and thermal cameras</a>, so they can identify and catch people with a fever.</li><li><a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2020/03/01/business/china-coronavirus-surveillance.html">Making people download software</a> that uses their <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/category/alibaba">Alibaba</a> accounts to estimate their health, gives them a color-coded risk of contagion, and shares it with law enforcement.</li></ul>After bearing the brunt of the coronavirus outbreak, China appears to be undergoing a turnaround, in which <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/coronavirus-more-recovered-than-still-infected-suggests-turnaround-2020-3">people are getting better faster than they fall sick</a>.However, experts fear that this mass data collection could continue after the coronavirus is <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/coronavirus-more-recovered-than-still-infected-suggests-turnaround-2020-3">less of a public-health threat</a>, and becomes a permanent addition to the Communist Party surveillance's state.(It's worth noting that these technologies have so far been implemented piecemeal in some regions, and it's too early to tell whether they actually helped China stem an outbreak.)But this kind of surveillance state already exists in in one part of China: Xinjiang, a northwestern Chinese region <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/category/xinjiang">home to the oppressed Uighur population</a>.The Chinese state sees Islam - the religion of most Uighurs - as a threat, and <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/china-uighur-detention-camps-cleanse-religion-leaked-documents-nyt-2019-11">conflating it with religious extremism</a>. China has in the past few years effectively set up a police state in their homeland.Almost a million Uighurs have been detained in prison-like re-education camps over alleged infractions as minor as <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/china-gives-these-excuses-to-imprison-uighur-ethnic-minority-2018-9">going to other countries, growing a beard, and owning computer files in the Uighur language</a>. (Many of these so-called crimes were laid out recently in a series of leaked documents called the <a href="https://www.jpolrisk.com/karakax/">Karakax List</a>.)Authorities there have installed almost a million facial-recognition cameras to record crimes, and even anticipate them.They have forced people to <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/china-uighurs-prison-camps-round-up-zapya-app-2019-11">download smartphone apps</a> that spy on what they're sharing with their friends, and have <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/china-tracks-uighur-minority-qr-code-kitchen-knives-doors-human-rights-watch-report-2018-9">posted QR codes</a> outside Uighurs' homes so that officials tracking them can download information quickly on who is inside.(It also uses analog measures to monitor Uighurs, which includes having Communist Party officials <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/china-uighur-monitor-home-shared-bed-report-2019-11">sleep in the same house as Uighur families</a> who have relatives in re-education camps.)Though this sort of surveillance is part of the norm in Xinjiang, in the rest of China it is not. Many citizens are getting their first taste of what living under China's police state is like during this coronavirus outbreak."In terms of the actual technologies that are being used, they're using the same ones in Xinjiang," said Darren Byler, a technology expert specializing in Xinjiang.Chinese authorities had long been plugging hardware and software into people's phones to flag sensitive keywords - "but now it's going beyond looking for things related to religion and looking for things related to travel, and looking at people's social network and connections to Wuhan," Byler told Business Insider.Referring to the Alibaba health app, New York Times reporter Paul Mozur <a href="https://twitter.com/paulmozur/status/1234312298308653056">tweeted</a>: "The color codes, checkpoints, and phone searches all smack of policies carried out in Xinjiang. People in China's east aren't used to it."Maya Wang, a senior China researcher at Human Rights Watch, told Business Insider: "The use of these systems is taking place without privacy law or surveillance law that effectively protects people's privacy rights, to allow them to challenge such designation or the imposition of quarantine.""However, I would also point out some obvious differences - people elsewhere in China still can post about their situation online, can still complain to families and friends about their suffering, whereas in Xinjiang people have much, much less power."<h2>'Once things are built ... you can't put them back in the box'</h2>Experts now say that this surveillance could become the norm even after the coronavirus threat weakens."Once you have the tools in place, you'd probably continue to use them, and you can expand them and use them for other purposes," Byler told Business Insider."From the US context, the PATRIOT Act, Homeland Security, and countering violent extremist programs that the US put in place initially after 9/11 were focused on Muslim Americans, but have now been radically expanded to look at asylum seekers of all types, like people coming across the southern border into the US.""Once these systems are in place, once things are built, once they're designed - you can't put them back in the box, and once political leaders see the utility of them and see that they can extend their power, extend their control, then of course they will continue to use them and use them in new ways," he said.Wang added that the Chinese Communist Party had long conducted mass surveillance, and that it has been expanding those measures as the country became more prosperous."You can still see how major events like the [2008 Beijing] Olympics and Shanghai Expo provided opportunities for the Chinese police to implement more intrusive security measures and more funding for surveillance and social control," she told Business Insider."Some of these measures then later became more permanent features of Chinese policing. I suspect some of the measures surrounding the coronavirus outbreak will continue to be implemented even after it is over."The Communist Party likely has good reason to want to exert more control over its populace.The outbreak has sparked the anger of numerous citizens over an apparent government cover-up in the early stages of the outbreak, with many calling for <a href="https://www.npr.org/sections/goatsandsoda/2020/03/03/809965742/personal-essay-from-wuhan-living-in-hell">democracy</a> and <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/wuhan-coronavirus-whistleblower-doctor-li-wenliang-death-anger-china-2020-2">freedom of speech</a>.Last Sunday, the government rolled out a new internet law to ban all negative content, with <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/wuhan-coronavirus-whistleblower-doctor-li-wenliang-death-anger-china-2020-2">definitions so vague that it could easily include news of the virus and criticism of the official response</a>."Under President Xi, we've seen increasingly tightened censorship over time both on the internet, and over the press," Wang told Business Insider. "I expect this trend to continue."South Korea, the worst-infected country outside China, has also faced criticism for its use of technology during the outbreak.Authorities there have been <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/world/2020/mar/06/more-scary-than-coronavirus-south-koreas-health-alerts-expose-private-lives">sending citizens "emergency guidance texts"</a> describing newly-diagnosed patients, unexpectedly revealing their location history and other personal information.Russian officials in Moscow are also using facial-recognition technology to catch those escaping quarantine and raiding the homes of possible carriers, <a href="https://www.reuters.com/article/us-china-health-moscow-technology/moscow-deploys-facial-recognition-technology-for-coronavirus-quarantine-idUSKBN20F1RZ">Reuters reported</a>.That's not to say all the new technology being deployed during the coronavirus is inherently sinister, or could have sinister purposes.Major Chinese tech firms are investing heavily in the research of new vaccines, with Alibaba developing algorithms to quickly analyze CT scans for signs of the coronavirus. How the coronavirus outbreak could help fuel China's dystopian surveillance system

I downloaded Tor on to my computer, the anonymous browser developed by the US navy, Googled "<keyword id="621419" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Silk-Road">Silk Road</keyword> <keyword id="14721" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Drugs">drugs</keyword>" and then cut and pasted this link <a href="www.silkroadvb5piz3r.onion." title="">http://silkroadvb5piz3r.onion/</a> into the address field.
And bingo! There it was: Silk Road, the site, which until the FBI <a href="http://www.theguardian.com/technology/2013/oct/03/silk-road-underground-market-closed-bitcoin" title="">closed it down</a> on Thursday and arrested a 29-year-old American in San Francisco, was the web's most notorious marketplace.
The "dark net" or the "deep web", the hidden part of the <keyword id="6357247" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Internet">internet</keyword> invisible to Google, might sound like a murky, inaccessible underworld but the reality is that it's right there, a click away, at the end of your mouse. It took me about 10 minutes of Googling and downloading to find and access the site on that February morning, and yet arriving at the home page of Silk Road was like stumbling into a parallel universe, a universe where eBay had been taken over by international drug cartels and Amazon offers a choice of books, DVDS and hallucinogens.
Drugs are just another market, and on Silk Road it was a market laid bare, differentiated by price, quality, point of origin, supposed effects and lavish user reviews. There were categories for "cannabis", "dissociatives", "ecstasy", "opioids", "prescription", "psychedelics", "stimulants" and, my favourite, "precursors". (If you've watched <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Breaking_Bad" title="">Breaking Bad</a>, you'll know that's the stuff you need to make certain drugs and which Walt has to hold up trains and rob factories to find. Or, had he known about Silk Road, clicked a link on his browser.)
And, just like eBay, there were star ratings for sellers, detailed feedback, customer service assurances, an escrow system and a busy forum in which users posted helpful tips. I looked on the UK cannabis forum, which had 30,000 postings, and a vendor called JesusOfRave was recommended. He had 100% feedback, promised "stealth" packaging and boasted excellent customer reviews: "The level of customer care you go to often makes me forget that this is an illegal drug market," said one.
JesusOfRave boasted on his profile: "Working with UK distributors, importers and producers to source quality, we run a tight ship and aim to get your order out same or next day. This tight ship also refers to our attitude to your and our privacy. We have been doing this for a long time … been playing with encryption since 0BC and rebelling against the State for just as long."
And so, federal agents, though I'm sure you know this already, not least because the Guardian <a href="http://www.theguardian.com/world/2013/oct/04/nsa-gchq-attack-tor-network-encryption" title="">revealed on Friday</a> that the National Security Agency (NSA) and GCHQ have successfully cracked Tor on occasion, I ordered "1g of Manali Charras [cannabis] (free UK delivery)", costing 1.16 bitcoins (the cryptocurrency then worth around £15). I used a false name with my own address, and two days later an envelope arrived at my door with an address in Bethnal Green Road, east London, on the return label and a small vacuum-packed package inside: a small lump of dope.
It's still sitting in its original envelope in the drawer of my desk. I got a bit stumped with my dark net story, put it on hold and became more interested in the wonderful world of cryptocurrencies as the value of bitcoins soared over the next few months (the 1.5 bitcoins I'd bought for £20 were <a href="http://www.theguardian.com/technology/2013/apr/10/bitcoin-new-high-losing-160" title="">worth £300 at one point this spring</a>).
Just under a month ago I was intrigued to see that Forbes magazine had managed to get an interview with "Dread Pirate Roberts", the site's administrator. And then, last week, <a href="http://www.theguardian.com/technology/2013/oct/02/alleged-silk-road-website-founder-arrested-bitcoin" title="">came the news</a> that Dread Pirate Roberts was 29-year-old Ross Ulbricht, a University of Texas physics graduate who, according to the FBI's documents, had not just run the site - which it alleges earned him $80m in commission - but had hired a contract killer for $80,000 to rub out an employee who had tried to blackmail him.
If that sounds far-fetched, papers filed last Thursday show that he tried to take a contract on a second person. The documents showed that the FBI had access to Silk Road's servers from July, and that the contract killer Ulbricht had thought he'd hired was a federal agent. It's an astonishing, preposterous end to what was an astonishing, preposterous site, though the papers show that while the crime might have been hi-tech, cracking it was a matter of old-fashioned, painstaking detective work.
Except, of course, that it's not the end of it. There are two other similar websites already up and running - Sheep and Black Market Reloaded - which have both seen a dramatic uplift in users in the last few days, and others will surely follow. Because what Silk Road did for drugs was what eBay did for secondhand goods, and Airbnb has done for accommodation: it created a viable trust system that benefited both buyers and sellers.
Nicholas Christin, a professor at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, who conducted <a href="https://www.andrew.cmu.edu/user/nicolasc/publications/Christin-WWW13.pdf" title="">six months of research</a> into the site, said that what surprised him most was how "normal" it was. "To me, the most surprising thing was how normal, when you set aside the goods being sold, the whole market appears to be," he said. And, while many people would be alarmed at the prospect of their teenagers buying drugs online, Silk Road was a whole lot more professional, regulated and controlled than buying drugs offline.
What's apparent from Dread Pirate Roberts's interview with Forbes and comments he made on the site's forum is that the motivation behind the site does not seem to have been making money (though clearly it did: an estimated $1.2bn), or a belief that drugs hold the key to some sort of mystical self-fulfillment, but that the state has no right to interfere in the lives of individuals. One of the details that enabled the FBI to track Ulbricht was the fact that he "favourited" several clips from the Ludwig von Mises Institute, a libertarian Alabama-based thinktank devoted to furthering what is known as the Austrian school of economics. Years later, Dread Pirate Roberts would cite the same theory on Silk Road's forum.
"What we're doing isn't about scoring drugs or 'sticking it to the man'," said Dread Pirate Roberts in the Forbes interview. "It's about standing up for our rights as human beings and refusing to submit when we've done no wrong."
And it's this that is possibly the most interesting aspect of the story. Because, while Edward Snowden's and the Guardian's <a href="http://www.theguardian.com/world/the-nsa-files" title="">revelations about the NSA</a> have shown how all-encompassing the state's surveillance has become, a counterculture movement of digital activists espousing the importance of freedom, individualism and the right to a private life beyond the state's control is also rapidly gaining traction.
It's the philosophy behind innovations as diverse as the <a href="http://www.theguardian.com/artanddesign/jonathanjonesblog/2013/sep/17/note-to-v-and-a-museum-guns-still-kill-people" title="">3D printed gun</a> and <a href="http://www.newyorker.com/reporting/2011/11/28/111128fa_fact_packer" title="">sites as mainstream as PayPal</a>, and its proponents are young, computer-savvy idealists with the digital skills to invent new ways of circumventing the encroaching power of the state.
Ulbricht certainly doesn't seem to have been living the life you imagine of a criminal overlord. He lived in a shared apartment. If he had millions stashed away somewhere, he certainly doesn't seem to have been spending it on high-performance cars and penthouses.
His LinkedIn page, while possibly not the best arena for self-expression for a man being hunted by the FBI, demonstrates that his beliefs are grounded in libertarian ideology: "I want to use economic theory as a means to abolish the use of coercion and aggression amongst mankind," he wrote. "The most widespread and systemic use of force is amongst institutions and governments … the best way to change a government is to change the minds of the governed … to that end, I am creating an economic simulation to give people a firsthand experience of what it would be like to live in a world without the systemic use of force."
Silk Road, it turns out, might have been that world. Anybody who has seen <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/All_the_President%27s_Men_%28film%29" title="">All the President's Men</a> knows that, when it comes to criminality, the answer has always been to "follow the money". But in the age of bitcoin, that's of a different order of difficulty. Silk Road is just one website; bitcoin is potentially the foundation for a whole new economic order.
