In its proposal to the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT), UPSC wants to charge a penalty on applicants for not appearing for the examination, <a href="https://theprint.in/india/governance/upsc-wants-govt-to-remove-mandatory-aptitude-test-from-civil-service-exam/259808/">The Print reported</a> citing sources. Aspirants who take the mandatory Civil Services Aptitude Exam (CSAT) have been complaining that it gives edge to applicants from English, Maths and Science streams over other candidates. CSAT assesses comprehension, communication skills, reasoning and analytical ability and problem solving skills. ‘Waste of Time’ The aptitude test or Paper II was rolled out in 2011 as a part of the selection process. However, in 2015, the Indian government changed the test to ‘qualifying’ test due to massive protests. Now, the candidates are only required to score a minimum passing percentage of 33% to qualify for the examination. However, the selection in further rounds is based on the score of Paper I, which tests current affairs and general knowledge of the candidate. According to an official from UPSC, the aptitude test is merely an add-on in the syllabus of the preliminary examination, and a “waste of time”. Missing Candidates The UPSC is also seeking <a href="https://theprint.in/india/governance/application-for-ias-exam-must-be-treated-as-an-attempt-in-itself-upsc-tells-govt/172942/">penalty on absentees</a>, to trim the gap between the candidates who apply for the test and those who actually appear for it. On an average, nearly a million candidates apply for the examination every year. However, merely half of them turn up to take the exam. The UPSC CSE is conducted to select officers of the elite public services like Indian Administration Services (IAS), Indian Police Services (IPS), Indian Foreign Services (IFS) and others. The examination includes three stages — prelims, mains and a personality test. UPSC proposes to drop aptitude test from the civil services exams

If you are planning to take the civil services exam for IAS, you must know the UPSC’s requirements and the minimum eligibility bar for the same. Here’s how you can start with basic information on how you can prepare for the civil services exam. Eligibility: To start with, you should be an Indian national and a graduate in any subject. For the general category, the age bracket to appear for the exam is 21 to 32 years. In between that, you can appear for the test six times. However, there are relaxations for the reserved categories — SC/ST, OBC, etc. The upper agelimit for OBC candidates is 35 years with 9 attempts allowed in the given age bracket, while for SC/ST the upper limit is 37 years and there’s no limit on the number of attempts., Exam Dates: The exam cycle has three phases — the Prelims, Mains and Interview round for all candidates. The prelims usually happen in June, Mains in September/October and the final interview rounds are held from January to April. Overall, 49.5% of the seats are for the reserved categories. So if you belong to the general category, you need to rank in top 50 to rank in the final list. The exam is taken by over 10 lakh aspirants every year and the application fee is just ₹100. For the female candidates, there’s no application fee.

It also increased the charges of a single room from ₹20 to ₹600 per month and to ₹300 for a double bed room which is to be shared. That accounts for an annual fee hike of almost ₹3,000 per student. That is a pain point for university students where “majority of students come from the most marginalized backgrounds in this country,” News18 <a href="https://www.news18.com/news/india/jnu-students-say-academic-emergency-at-varsity-demand-vcs-removal-as-teachers-extend-support-2382953.html">reported</a>. Added to this, hostel curfews and a dress code also did not resonate well with the students. The protest coincides with the institute’s third convocation ceremony. The student body called for a boycott as they demand a rollback of the rules and the fee hike. They also intend to marching towards the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) in Vasant Kunj, Delhi. Delhi police used water cannons to disperse the students as they tried to cross the barricades to meet the vice chancellor M Jagadesh Kumar. The VC repeatedly rejected the request to meet and discuss the issues.

JNU administration hikes the hostel, mess and security fee by close to 400%

Mumbai, Dec 19 () Auto major Tata Motors on Thursday unveiled its first electric SUV Nexon EV that will be commercially launched within weeks.
 The SUV, built on its most popular SUV Nexon, is the first electric vehicle (EV) powered by Ziptron technology and offers "a range not less than 300 km per charge" and can accelerate to 100 kmph in just 9.9 seconds.
 Bookings for the car will start from Friday, the company said, without revealing the price or delivery date.
 On pricing, the company said it will be around 20 per cent more than the AMT version of Nexon and thus will come between Rs 15-17 lakh and will be 'launched within weeks'.
 The SUV comes with as many as 35 connected features, including tow away and intrusion alerts.
 The new EV comes in three variants and offers an eight-year warranty or 1,60,000 km on the battery and the motor, which is the highest in the industry.
 The Nexon is the first EV coming on the Ziptron technology. This is a high performance, connected vehicle that is suited to address the aspirations of customers and break all barriers for EV adoption, Tata Motors CEO and MD Guenter Butschek said while unveiling the EV. 
 Shailesh Chandra, president of electric mobility unit at Tata Motors, said the battery can be charged 80 per cent in under 10 minutes under the fast charging mode, and fully-charged under 40 minutes. 
 The battery pack will offer a range which will be higher than 300 km on a fully-charged battery and can be charged even on a 15 ampere plug point, he added. BEN IAS RVK
