The Indian Institute of Technology, <keyword id="6357478" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="kanpur" source="Orion">Kanpur</keyword>, has developed a course on drone technology that would be taught at IITs, other technical institutes and skill development centres in the country. The course has been designed on the directives of the Union ministry of electronics and information technology. The ministry sees drone technology from the perspective of the future and believes the move would help in quality supply of specialists in this field. "This is why the ministry has undertaken this task of taking drone technology to students at the macro-level," said a faculty member. The task of designing the course was bestowed on two scientists of aero-space engineering -- <keyword id="13980376" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="dr-abhishek" source="Orion">Dr Abhishek</keyword> and Mangal Kothari. The duo has developed a two-year degree course in which theory and practical would be of equal importance. The course also includes new technologies in making drones. Dr Abhishek said the course had been designed keeping in mind the developing needs and the students. The course would shortly be introduced in the academic institutions. The scientists have come up with the smallest of drones equipped with cutting edge technologies apart from doing extensive research. The Uttar Pradesh government has planned to set up a centre of excellence for drone development at IIT Kanpur. The best drones from IIT Kanpur include Alakh that weighs just 225 grams. It has been developed for the armed forces for surveillance purposes. Drone named 'Gauraiya' appears like a sparrow and weighs 239 grams. It has proved its worth in hills and mountains. Hawk is a powerhouse of 300 grams, can fly for 25 minutes and sends live footage in an area of 2 km. The Auto-Pilot is armed with artificial intelligence and this drone sends all the data to the control room even if it has crashed. The Agri-drone monitors the crop, sprinkles pesticides and makes useful suggestions. "Even after washing multiple times, it does not lose its functionality. This fabric can be stitched into various articles such as bedsheets, the uniforms for patients, doctors and nurses and even curtains. The fabric satisfies the Indian standards in terms of the number of washing. It is completely non-toxic and affordable," he added. A "digital stethoscope" developed by a team at IIT Bombay, that can listen to heartbeats from a distance and record them, minimising the risk of healthcare professionals contracting the novel coronavirus from patients, is already available in the market. Operating a start-up called "AyuDevice" from the IIT's technology business incubator, the team has sent 1,000 stethoscopes to different hospitals and healthcare centres across the country. The product is also available for sale at various stores. An IIT Guwahati startup "Marut Dronetech" has developed two types of drones, which are being used by the Telangana government and various departments across the state. The drones are being deployed for spraying disinfectant in public spaces to prevent the coronavirus. They can disinfect 50 times more area than what can be done using traditional methods, the institute claimed. "We have also developed public monitoring and warning drones which are fitted with a camera and speaker. These can be used to monitor places, especially with high disease prevalence for crowd gathering and give appropriate instructions to people, using fitted loudspeakers," said Prem Kumar Vislawath, an IIT Guwahati alumnus. The institute's design department has come up with a bamboo hospital furniture range, mass production of which is quick and low cost, to meet demands arising out of hospitalisation of more people with the spike in coronavirus cases. "The furniture can be used at primary health centres and makeshift isolation wards set up in places like indoor stadiums. It can be easily disposed of when the virus has been contained. Over 200 beds can be manufactured per day using the design. Flying a drone in India requires lengthy approvals and has penalties up to ₹5,00,000 against defaulters. Not just that, flying a drone legally in India is not economically viable, the regulations and infrastructure are also far from being drone-friendly. A pilot needs to bear heavy expenses to get a licence, getting a drone that complies with the standards set by authority are also rare and expensive, and insurance is mandatory, which makes it even more expensive to become a registered drone pilot in India. Invaluable vaccines flying in the air: too risky? Delivering vaccines or medical support with drones is not a new idea. It has been talked about in the past that drones can be extremely helpful in remote locations where there's a lack of proper infrastructure, connectivity and drivable roads. The idea of delivering goods using drones, in general, is not limited to delivering food and packages. Indian government allows ICMR to study Covid-19 vaccine delivery using drones

The government has invited bids for the use of drones to deliver Covid vaccines and drugs to remote and difficult-to-reach areas to ensure last-mile coverage in select locations of the country. On behalf of the ICMR, the HLL Infra Tech Services Limited (Procurement Support Agency) has invited expression of interest (EOI) through the Central Public Procurement Portal from experienced Indian agencies for the delivery of medical supplies (vaccines/drugs) by UAVs. According to the tender criteria, the ICMR shall engage UAV operators who are able to conduct beyond visual line of sight (BVLOS) operations in fixed pre-defined flight paths, deliver medical supplies payload at select locations in <keyword id="3658" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="India">India</keyword> and return to the command station. During the prevailing pandemic, different agencies are helping the government prevent and control the transmission of COVID-19. To strengthen the delivery of vaccines, the ICMR successfully conducted a feasibility study to deliver vaccines through UAVs in collaboration with IIT, Kanpur, the bid document stated. "Based on the preliminary results of the study, the ICMR has developed a standard protocol for the successful delivery of vaccines using a UAV. "Now, based on the experience gained in the feasibility study, the ICMR is keen to develop a model for vaccine delivery by UAV in the field practice area to reach areas to cover last-mile coverage at difficult terrain in selected locations," it said. "The main objective of the proposed work is to develop a medical supplies delivery model and its feasibility in the field practice area by using UAVs in remote inaccessible (hard to reach) areas in selected locations in India," it added. According to the specifications, UAVs should be able to cover a minimum aerial distance of 35 km, able to take off vertically and carry a minimum payload of 4 kg and should be capable of returning to command station after delivering the payload. Initially, the tenure of engagement shall be 90 days. This can be extended further depending upon the performance of the UAV operator and the need of the program. Low-cost test kits to santising drones: IIT innovations take commercial route to aid COVID-19 fight

The newest is a set of three smart multi-function <keyword id="6370270" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="unmanned-aerial-vehicles">unmanned aerial vehicles</keyword> by IIT-Kanpur students and professors which seem to have swept the <keyword id="43853" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-military">Indian military</keyword> off their feet even before they have had a glimpse of it. 
 
Professors here say that a defence team is likely to visit the institute soon to see a demonstration of these UAVs. They are contemplating its use in surveillance in insurgency-hit areas as well as in battlefields for various operations. 
 
Cheaper than those currently being sourced from foreign countries, these UAVs are fitted with electro-optical and thermal cameras and are ready for mass production. 
 
FEATURES OF UAVs 
 
SWATI - Silent Watch Aircraft For Tactical Intelligence 
Running on either fuel or batteries, it requires a small runway of only 50 to 80 meters and can keep an eye on 100 km radius. It can stay in air for about eight hours when using petrol and for four hours with batteries. 
 
AMITA - Autonomous Man-packable Intelligent Tactical Aircraft 
This does not require a runaway, can be hand-launched and weighs just six to eight kgs. It can remain in the air for more than three hours. 
 
The third UAV is still in process. It's prototype has been developed. 75% of the power requirements of this UAV is met by solar energy, thus increasing its endurance. It's bigger in size and can get charged while flying. 
 
The credit for these innovations goes to Prof Philip who has worked on the development of these UAVs along with Prof AK Ghosh, Prof Nischal Verma, Prof Satyaki Roy and 30 other students from IIT Kanpur.

Prime Minister <keyword id="6354477" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="narendra-modi" source="Orion">Narendra Modi</keyword> asserted on Friday that his government had effected broad changes in the recruitment process by making it more streamlined and time-bound while boosting transparency and speed. Distributing 71,426 appointment letters to recruits in different government departments, <keyword id="6354642" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="modi" source="Orion">Modi</keyword> said the ongoing '<keyword id="1463752" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="rozgar-mela" source="Orion">Rozgar Mela</keyword>' exercises have become an identity of his government. This shows that it fulfils what it resolves to do, he added. The prime minister had last year announced the 'Rozgar Mela' drive to give jobs to 10 lakh people and noted on Friday that several states where the BJP and its allies are in power have also been holding them. More states will organise them soon, he said. Addressing the recruits, he asked them to resolve to serve people and said the mantra in the administrative system should be that the citizen is always right like it is noted in business that the consumer is always right. That is why employment in the government sector is called "government service" and not jobs, he said. The prime minister noted that a large number of recruits are from families where no one was in government service. A transparent and clear recruitment process awards people's merit and competence, he said. Modi said massive investment in the infrastructure sector has boosted employment and self-employment opportunities. When development growth takes place at a fast pace, self-employment opportunities also rise quickly, he added. The <keyword id="6365387" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="pmo" source="Orion">PMO</keyword> had earlier said the 'Rozgar Mela' is a step towards the fulfilment of Modi's commitment to accord the highest priority to employment generation. The new recruits, selected from across the country, will join various positions under the central government like junior engineers, loco pilots, technicians, inspectors, sub-inspectors, constables, stenographers, junior accountants, grameen dak sevak, Income Tax inspectors, teachers, nurses, doctors, social security officers among others. The experience of newly inducted officials in learning from the 'Karmayogi Prarambh' module was also shared during the programme as Modi interacted with some of them.
