The <keyword id="55119" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="indian-institute-of-technology" source="Orion">Indian Institute of Technology</keyword> (IIT) Ropar in Punjab this year managed to place 100 of its students in the industry with the highest cost to company (CTC) salary of ₹50 lakh per annum, a big hike from last year's ₹18 lakh per annum. In the placement drive of 2020, IIT Ropar had achieved 100 per cent placements for undergraduate and postgraduate batches. At that time, the highest CTC was ₹18 lakh per annum, whereas the median salary stood at ₹12 lakh per annum. IIT Ropar is known for its flagship programme of Computer and Science Engineering in the B.Tech stream. IIT-Ropar sees highest salary of ₹50 lakh per annum

<ul><li>India’s elite Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Ropar has featured on the <keyword id="6513530" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="times-higher-education">Times Higher Education</keyword> (THE) <keyword id="263731" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="World-University-Rankings">World University Rankings</keyword> 2020 for the first time. </li><li>It has been ranked between 301-350. </li><li>On the gender equality front, IIT, Ropar accounts for 13 female students in correspondence to 87 male students. </li><li>The other four of the 23 prominent Indian institutions ranked include Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Indore and Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Bombay, Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Delhi, and Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Kharagpur.</li></ul>While only six Indian universities featured in the top 500 list of <a href="https://www.timeshighereducation.com/world-university-rankings/indian-institute-technology-ropar">Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings 2020</a>, India’s elite Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Ropar has been featured in the list for the first time, ranking between 301-350 among the 1,400 universities on the list. The rankings are analysed on the basis of the score points for its teaching, industry income, research, international outlook and citations. The institute was given 36 points for its industrial income with 100 points for citations. With the increasing demand for artificial intelligence, automation and machine learning, <keyword id="222212" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="IIT-Ropar">IIT Ropar</keyword> focuses on research facilities, majorly in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Maths) subjects. It also has research labs and strong industrial partnerships. IIT Ropar has 13 female students for every 87 male students. The other four of the 23 prominent Indian institutions ranked include Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Indore and Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Bombay, Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Delhi, and Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Kharagpur. “The Indian government has strong ambitions to boost the global standing of its top universities and attract foreign students, academics and research collaboration. India’s IIT Ropar makes it to the top 500 global universities for the first time

The Human Resource Development recently released the list of best Indian universities for this year, and the list of Top 10 Engineering institutes in India is filled with <keyword id="49737" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="IITs">IITs</keyword>, from top to bottom. Outreach and inclusivity, along with global footprint, are the parameters on which every institute was ranked and would be ranked in future, for which the institutes need to go global. 
 
Needless to say, the relatively younger IITs, having secured places in the list, are now looking at ways to boost their academic brand in the best way possible, for which they have identified a target area of bringing in world class faculty. 
 For this, the IITs are looking forward to hiring faculty from foreign countries. For example, <keyword id="222212" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="IIT-Ropar">IIT Ropar</keyword>, having secured the 9th place in the top 10 list, will start hiring from three countries and six locations next month, all the way from London to Los Angeles. 
 Similarly, <keyword id="656784" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="IIT-Gandhinagar">IIT Gandhinagar</keyword>, the 8th ranked institute in the list, will be hiring a bulk of its assistant professor level faculty from foreign universities. 
 
While hiring, the institutes would focus on Indian students doing a post doctoral in reputed engineering schools abroad. After interviewing probable candidates, they might even issue an appointment letter then and there. 
 
For the best hiring process, the hiring teams from IIT Ropar would have its Director and Dean, three external experts from IISc, IIT, Delhi, and IIT, Roorkee.

Global footprint requirement forces IITs to hire faculty from foreign shores

<ul><li>Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) and <keyword id="2486136" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-Institutes-of-Science-Education-Research">Indian Institutes of Science Education &amp; Research</keyword> (IISERs) will provide internships to as many as 500 students from Jammu &amp; Kashmir. </li><li>The students pursuing science and other professional courses — both at the undergraduate and postgraduate level — will be eligible for the two-month internships. </li><li>The participating institutions include four <keyword id="6354859" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="IIt">IIT</keyword>s — IIT Pune, <keyword id="858387" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="IIT-Bhubaneswar">IIT Bhubaneswar</keyword>, IIT Ropar and IIT Guwahati — and IISER Pune, Odisha and Kolkata campuses.</li><li> IIT Ropar said it will hire 100 interns via this programme.</li></ul>Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) and Indian Institutes of Science Education &amp; Research (IISERs) will now provide <a href="https://www.hindustantimes.com/education/jammu-kashmir-govt-signs-mou-with-iits-iisers-for-internship-for-students/story-Xp8IPJ7rarwibdjhcNSZGI.html">internships to as many as 500 students from Jammu &amp; Kashmir</a>. The internship will be conducted in two phases — May 15 to July 15 2020 and one month in December 2020. The students will work on research projects related to science and technology and will be monitored by the faculty staff at the premier institutes. The applications will be shortlisted and prepared by April 15, 2020. The participating institutions include four IITs — IIT Pune, IIT Bhubaneswar, IIT Ropar and IIT Guwahati — and IISER Pune, Odisha and Kolkata campuses. This comes as the Higher Education Department of J&amp;K signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the All India Council of Technical Education (AICTE) to boost employability in the region. The unemployment rate in Jammu &amp; Kashmir is significantly higher after the blockade and internet shutdown since August. As many as 250,000 educated people in J&amp;K are <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/careers/news/kashmirs-special-status-and-internet-blackout-kills-almost-5-lakh-jobs-in-six-months/articleshow/73697785.cms">struggling to find jobs</a> due to lack of streamlined policies. Under the initiative, the Human Resource &amp; Development Ministry (MHRD) will fund the travel of these students while the participating institutions will take care of the hostel and tuition fee. The Union Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal said that the initiative will provide exposure to the youth under the Prime Minister’s Special Scholarship Scheme. “The welfare of <keyword id="17605" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Jammu-and-kashmir">Jammu and Kashmir</keyword> has always been a priority of the government. IITs and IISERs provide internships to 500 science students from Jammu & Kashmir

Saudi Arabia’s growth came despite it being a new entrant in the rankings after it gained the status of ‘secondary emerging’ last year. India also falls in the category of secondary emerging economies. The Emerging Economies University Rankings features institutions from countries categorised as ‘advanced emerging,’ ‘secondary emerging’ or ‘frontier’ by the London Stock Exchange’s FTSE group, which manages the indices of shares. The rankings are based on 13 performance indicators including faculty, research and citations, industry income and international outlook. It has improved its rank from 501-600 rank to 401-500 this year. This improvement is due to higher for its industry income (73.9 points) and teaching (48.5 points). The rankings are analysed on the basis of the score points for its teaching, industry income, research, international outlook and citations. The institute has one female student corresponding to every four male students. The institute particularly offers courses in Biochemical Engineering and Biotechnology, Chemical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Computer Science and Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Engineering Physics, Mathematics and Computing, Mechanical Engineering, Production and Industrial Engineering, and Textile Technology. The six Indian universities that featured in the top 500 list includes Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Ropar, Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Indore and Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Bombay, and Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Kharagpur. “The Indian government has strong ambitions to boost the global standing of its top universities and attract foreign students, academics and research collaboration. It needs to back them up with high levels of investment and increasing global competition,” THE rankings editor Ellie Bothwell <a href="https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/india/indian-universities-out-of-top-300-in-global-rankings/articleshow/71089023.cms">told</a> TOI. Globally, the University of Oxford, United Kingdom, California Institute of Technology, United States and University of Cambridge, UK were the top performers in the rankings.

India’s IIT Delhi now ranks in top 500 world university rankings

<ul><li>The Human Resource Development Ministry (MHRD) has asked the 23 IITs to plan a course of action to improve rankings on national and global scale. </li><li>This is in reference to the <keyword id="6513530" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="times-higher-education">Times Higher Education</keyword> (THE) rankings and <keyword id="990919" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Quacquarelli-Symonds">Quacquarelli Symonds</keyword> (QS) World University rankings. </li><li>The international rank of India’s elite Indian Institute of Technology (IITs) has slipped further this year and none of these premier institutions has featured in the top 100 universities in these global higher education surveys.</li></ul>The Human Resource Development Ministry (MHRD) is taking the international rankings of its institutions seriously. It has asked the 23 Indian Institute of Technology (IITs) to plan a course of action to improve them. The international ranking of IITs slipped further this year. None of these premier institutions featured in the top 100 universities in the global higher education surveys. "The issue was discussed in the IIT Council meeting. It is important to work on research excellence. The IITs have been asked to work on improving their national and international rankings. For this, each IIT will come up with an action plan," PTI<a href="https://www.livemint.com/education/news/iits-asked-to-improve-international-ranking-to-come-up-with-action-plan-11569820879448.html"> reported </a>citing HRD Ministry official. IITs aside, the ministry is wondering why its top universities like Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), Hyderabad University do not feature in the top university lists. “The institutes ought to improve themselves first instead of complaining,” The Print <a href="https://theprint.in/india/education/upset-iits-complain-about-times-rankings-hrd-ministry-says-improve-yourselves-first/291061/">reported</a> citing the ministry’s response to the IITs that complained about the drop in their ranks. This move came after Times Higher Education (THE) rankings and Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) World University rankings. According to the THE rankings, only six Indian institutions were spotted in the top 500 universities, globally. None of the Indian universities — including IITs and Indian Institute of Science (IISc) — made it to the top 100 list. In QS rankings, IIT-Bombay, IIT-Delhi and IISc-Bangalore were the only three Indian institutes that featured in top 200 universities. Indian government demands an action plan from IITs to improve global rankings

Ranked at 90th position, Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham entered the top 100 for the very first time — crawling up 51 spots from last year. <keyword id="1582424" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="THE-Rankings">The rankings</keyword> are based on 13 performance indicators including faculty, research and citations, industry income and international outlook. Hefty pay packets Recruiters like Microsoft, Cisco, Amazon and McKinsey &amp; Co too have been flocking this 16-year old university. This year, the institute placed 80% of its engineering batch and its salary is comparable to the elite IITs and NITs at ₹52 lakh per annum — offered by Atlassian. Cisco hired 27 students at ₹29 lpa while Amazon hired seven students at ₹28 lpa. “With more than 80 reputed companies visiting the campus since the placement season began in July 2019, more than 82% of B.Tech students are already placed in various organisations with good salary packages as per industry standards,” The New Indian Express<a href="https://www.newindianexpress.com/states/tamil-nadu/2020/feb/02/80-amrita-engg-students-get-placement-2097842.html"> reported </a>citing the institute’s statement. International students flock The institute, which was also featured in the Eminence scheme of the Human Resource &amp; Development ministry (MHRD) improved on average score and performance parameters such as industry income and international outlook, as per the Times Higher Education. It has comparatively higher intake of international students at 12% — against merely 2% at the iconic engineering and research institutions like IITs and IISc. The performance growth may be attributed to its international partnership for bilateral governmental research programmes. It has research collaborations with over 20 US universities across areas like cyber security. The university also has associations with European and Japanese institutions. “The Emerging Economies University Rankings 2020 suggests that real progress is being made by a number of institutions in a number of metrics across our robust methodology, and could mark an exciting turning point for Indian higher education, enabled in part by the Institutes of Eminence scheme,” said Phil Baty, chief knowledge officer, THE. Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham has over 14,000 engineering and research students overseen by more than 1,700 faculty staff. That means, merely over 11 students per staff member. Founded in 2003, <keyword id="397381" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Amrita-University">Amrita University</keyword> has campuses spread across Coimbatore, Amritapuri, Bengaluru, Kochi, Mysore in Kerala, Tamil Nadu, and Karnataka. India Indian Institute of Science (IISc) has been ranked 16th among the global universities scoring 55.3 points for its research practices. Among other institutions on THE list are IIT Delhi, IIT Roorkee, IIT Indore, IIT Madras, IIT Ropar and IIT Kanpur.
