 ‘Sam Bahadur’ Known widely as Sam Bahadur, he was the Chief of Army Staff during 1971 Bangladesh Liberation war. He was the first general of the modern Indian army to be made a field marshal. Manekshaw’s career lasted four decades, and saw five wars. He also successfully masterminded the Indo-Pakistan war of 1971. The Burma Campaign The Field Marshal was born on April 3rd, 1914 and did his early schooling in Amritsar. In a rare case of its kind, his divisional Commander, Sir David Tennent Cowan, pinned his own <keyword id="6775404" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Military-Cross">Military Cross</keyword> on to the Captain’s chest saying, “ A dead person cannot be awarded a Military Cross.” Manekshaw was awarded the Padma Bhushan in 1968 for his service to the nation.

Even as India has made it clear that Chinese have not entered the Indian territory or captured any posts, on the ground in Ladakh, the veterans and porters who have stood to external aggressions in the past say if need be they are ready to fight for the country at the Line of Actual Control (LAC). In Ladakh veterans who played a pivotal role in the previous escalations with China and Pakistan are reminiscing about the times gone by. They say they may not be in service anymore but their passion to serve the country remain strong as ever. Veteran Honorary Captain Tashi Chhepal contributed in evicting the Pakistanis from the mountain peaks during the Kargil conflict. A feat that won him the Vir Chakra. He says the current stand off has stark similarities with the 1999 Kargil conflict. He is angry about the loss of 20 Indian soldiers in the Galwan valley. "During 1962 China war, we didn't have enough equipment, but we have a very advanced army," he says. "It is sad though that soldiers got killed in the Galwan Valley." He said the soldiers should have the full liberty to use arms when they come under such an aggression. "If the jawans don't use these weapons when they are getting killed, when would they?" he asked. Ladakhis have scripted stories of bravery and valour fighting as regular soldiers or as volunteers helping to move materials on the mountain tops and stand against the adversary be it the Indo-China war of 1962 or the Kargil conflict of 1999. Retired Hawaldar Tsering Angdus said he served the army for 22 years and has patrolled the Galwan Valley and other sensitive spots at the LAC in the past. He says China always had its eyes fixed on the Indian territories at the LAC but India will never allow the Chinese to infringe on its sovereignty. He says if orders come by he will fight shoulder to shoulder with the army. "I am trained in using weapons, whenever need arises I would be ready to serve my country again on the frontline," he said. ‘Daughter of the nation’ Lata Mangeshkar turns 90 and here’s taking a look at her career of 77 years

In a joint military exercise, Indian and Chinese troops will be meeting for the first time on Line of Actual Control (LAC), the heavily manned, disputed border of the two countries, which has been the reason for several armed face-offs and the 1962 Indo-China war. 
 
The move is aimed at building confidence among Indian and Chinese soldiers who patrol the LAC. As a part of the plan, local garrisons will be taking part in a tactical exercise focusing on cooperation in disaster management. This exercise would be the first time that frequent patrolling troops from both countries will be meeting for a military drill. 
 Senior officials from the <keyword id="6354416" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Indian-Army">Indian Army</keyword> told ET that the joint exercise would be starting within a few weeks, and that the first phase would take place on the Chinese side of LAC. In the near future, such tactical exercises would become a regular feature, and the next phase would take place on the Indian side. 
 
For the first exercise, Chushul has been chosen as the location, which played a significant part in the 1962 border war, with some fiercest engagements. It was one of the few places where Indian troops had managed to push back Chinese soldiers. 
 
"The first engagement will be on disaster relief and is aimed at building confidence. Local commanders will exchange notes and the first exercise will be followed by one on the Indian side. The modalities and the date for the exercise are being finalised," a senior official told ET.

Indian and Chinese military troops to take part in joint drill on LAC

The Chinese official media has once again fired at its Indian counterpart, with editorials asking Indian troops to either move out of <keyword id="4714073" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="dokalam">Dokalam</keyword> area in Sikkim sector with dignity or be kicked out. They have also described the situation as "worryingly tense". As per a statement issued by the Chinese foreign ministry, it is considering issuing an advisory for its citizens in India depending on the security situation there. <keyword id="107898" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Global-Times">Global Times</keyword>, China's nationalistic tabloid, has said that India should be taught a "bitter lesson", <keyword id="71012" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="China-Daily">China Daily</keyword> has said that India should look into the mirror. The editorial in The Global Times also said that India will suffer "greater losses" than it did after the Indo-China war in 1962 if it gets into border clashes with China. "We believe the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA) is powerful enough to expel Indian troops out of Chinese territory. The Indian military can choose to return to its territory with dignity, or be kicked out of the area by Chinese soldiers," it said. "We need to give diplomatic and military authorities full power to handle the issue. We call on Chinese society to maintain high-level unity on the issue. The more unified the Chinese people are, the more sufficient conditions the professionals will have to fight against India and safeguard our interests. This time, we must teach New Delhi a bitter lesson," it added. "If New Delhi believes that its military might can be used as leverage in the <keyword id="4710140" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="donglang">Donglang</keyword> area (referred to as Dokalam or Dok La), and it is ready for a two-and-a-half front war, we have to tell India that the Chinese look down on their military power," it continued. The paper was referring to what <keyword id="6354416" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Indian-Army">Indian Army</keyword> Chief General <keyword id="2496903" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Bipin-Rawat">Bipin Rawat</keyword> had said about the situation, saying that India 'was ready for a two-and-a-half front war'. Since the standoff on June 6, when the PLA destroyed bunkers of the Indian Army, claiming the area belonged to China, Chinese media have carried several pieces warning India against escalating border tensions. As per China Daily, "India should look in the mirror. It was not able to refute the evidence of illegal border-trespassing and coerced its small neighbour Bhutan to shoulder the blame." It added that India should respect the border agreement that it has with China and withdraw its troops. The editorial said the situation in Dokalam remains "worryingly tense, with a stand-off between soldiers of the two countries still ongoing". "That the situation has not flared out of control is thanks to the great restraint exercised by the Chinese troops. But the tensions resulting from the intrusion will surely grow if there is not a total withdrawal of the Indian troops." It’s been a month that both neighbouring nations have been engaged in a standoff in the Dokalam area near the Bhutan trijunction, after a Chinese Army construction party came to build a road there.
