 Brent crude has hit a $70 a barrel and that's pushing the market down. The <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/policy/economy/news/oil-prices-soar-over-4-as-tensions-rise-between-us-and-crude-rich-iran/articleshow/73078605.cms" data-type="tilCustomLink" target="_blank">spike in oil prices</a> due to the escalating standoff between US and Iran will be bad news for a net importer like India, which buys over 80% of its oil needs overseas. This leads to a weaker rupee and higher inflation for consumers, where the sentiment is already at a 6-year low. However, there is no reason to panic yet. "Taking the implied average oil price this year, oil imports would come in at around US$12bn a month. That would tally up to around 5% of annual GDP. This is far lower than in 2012 and 2013, when annual oil imports reached 8% of GDP and played a major role in pushing India to the brink of a balance of payments crisis," a report from Capital Economics said. India's economic growth is at a six-year low, at 4.5%, and the government and the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), had hoped to stimulate the Indian economy with additional spending, interest rate cuts, boost lending to private sector, and by managing the long-term borrowing rates for the government. But the uncertainty around oil prices in the near future will push them to focus on averting a crisis instead of focussing on reviving the economy. Other things equal, oil prices would have to rise to around $95-100 a barrel and, crucially, stay there for a sustained period of time before India’s external position returned as a major source of vulnerability, the report said. The students are now demanding “safe fest or no fest”. According to the National Commission for Women (NCW), nearly 36 intruders who were drunk, barged in the campus during the college’s annual cultural fest — ‘Reverie’ — on February 6 and misbehaved with the students. The NCW also alleged that the police took no action against them. “The Rapid Action Force personnel were standing right across the campus. They did absolutely nothing. They allege that the men groped, abused and molested them. “Men stood in gangs, ogled at women, groped them, tried to feel them up and touched them throughout the concert,” said the official statement from Gargi students.

 Meanwhile, the Human Resource Development Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal said in the Lok Sabha that, “It has come to our notice that some outsiders had entered the college, which is not right. The Delhi Police has now registered a molestation case. “The administration also showed its laxity by opening gates from time to time,” it said. “The police force and RAF did nothing to control the situation,” the students alleged. ‘Girls shouldn’t participate in the fest if they feel unsafe’ The students also blamed the Principal Promila Kumar saying that “When the students tried to approach the principal for what was happening on the ground, she said that the students shouldn’t come to the fest if they felt unsafe.” However, Kumar said that no such incident was reported to the college authorities. “It is a serious incident and I will deliberate on it. But unfortunately nobody has reported it to me. We had a huge security arrangement, including police, bouncers and even commandos along with the teaching and non-teaching staff, on duty. No one came to us and reported any such incident,” she told IANS. The college authorities, or the students have not filed any official police complaint even after five days. ANI reported that the Delhi Police has now visited the college to verify the incident through the CCTV footage. Mumbai, Feb 5 () Actor Akshay Kumar has pipped Deepika Padukone in celebrity brand ranking with the Khiladi star's value rising to USD 104.5 million, according to a report released on Wednesday. Cricketer Virat Kohli continues to hold the top spot with a brand value of USD 237.5 million, Duff and Phelps' celebrity brand valuation report for 2019 said. Padukone, who was ranked at number two last year, has slipped to number three with a brand valuation of USD 93.5 million, while Kumar has replaced her as the second most-valued celebrity, the report said. Padukone invited the ire of a lot of people by showing up at protests at JNU against a violent attack on students, while Kumar was in the news for interviewing Prime Minister Narendra Modi ahead of his landslide win in the general elections. People of Delhi have seen development by the Modi government," Goel told ANI. ‘Blame game’ — The battle is on As campaigning is heated from both sides, the ruling AAP and the BJP engaged in a blame game. Symbolic violation of odd-even rule As Delhi heads to assembly polls, pollution crisis, cracking down on unauthorised residential colonies and a full statehood are the key issues brought up by the AAP. However, the BJP calls it an ‘election stunt.’ A few months back, the Arvind Kejriwal-led AAP rolled out the odd-even scheme in Delhi to cut down on pollution levels. As a response, Goel said he would deliberately ride an odd-numbered vehicle on an even day, violating the rule. The exit poll indicates that AAP is expected to win between 53-57 seats. “The BJP and Congress on the other hand could win around 11-17 and 0-2 seats respectively. The results are based on inputs from over 34000 people across all constituencies in Delhi,” said a press release. The Delhi elections are important for BJP to gauge its stronghold on the capital of the country. In spite of the resounding victory they saw in Lok Sabha elections where all the seven MP seats landed in their kitty, assembly elections are a different turf. Aam Aadmi Party made a resounding campaign statement – which bordered on conceit claiming that Delhi voters need not vote for them if they think they did not do a good job. Their report card contains improving school infrastructure by revamping 20,000 classrooms, introducing mohalla clinics and increase CCTV coverage to ensure security. However, AAP seemed to have had no pull with Delhi citizens when it came to Lok Sabha elections. In spite of the 100% results, BJP is on the edge when it comes to the union territory’s assembly elections. For one, a lot has changed since its Lok Sabha election win – with a slowing economy and rising food inflation. Delhi in particular has been at the centre of protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA). The many troubles with students and citizens like Delhi police action of Jamia Milia students; police registering cases against JNU students after a mob attack had injured many – has angered its many citizens against the central government. Kejriwal became on the few people in power who sought the government t revoke the religious divide while providing sanctuary to citizens.
