The protests and counter protests at the Jawaharlal Nehru University are refusing to die out. What started as an event to mark the death anniversary of 2001 Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru, by alleged students of the University, at the campus has snowballed into a gigantic political controversy, resulting in detentions under sedition charges, assault on journalists amongst other things etc. 
 
Here is the timeline of what happened at the JNU campus: 
 
- Alleged students of the JNU had organised an event to protest against judicial hanging of Afzal Guru in 2013 and also to express solidarity with Kashmiri migrants. 
 
- Posters were put up at the Sabarmati dhaba of JNU campus about the same. Also, a programme-‘A country without a post office — against the judicial killing of Afzal Guru and Maqbool Bhatt’-was supposed to take off. 
 
- This didn’t go down well with ABVP members, who protested against the event, demanding expulsion of the organisers. 
 
- A disciplinary enquiry was taken up by the university administration. The administration claimed the organisers went ahead with the event without permission. 
 
- A protest march was also carried out and ABVP members accused JNU students of shouting anti-India slogans. A video also appeared in which students were heard shouting slogans like ‘Kashmir ki azadi se, bharat ki barbadi tak, jangh rahegi jari’. 
 
- Now, ABVP members and JNU students are at loggerheads. In the face-off, JNU students say they did not shout any anti-national slogans. 
 
- A sedition case against unknown students was registered at Vasant Kunj (North) police station and the university also barred eight students from academic activity pending an enquiry. 
 
- JNU Students Union president Kanhaiya Kumar was arrested on sedition charges and ordered to three-day police custody. 
 
- Students of JNU gave a shutdown call and #JNUShutdown started trending everywhere, demanding Kumar’s release. JNU teachers also joined the students in boycotting classes. 
 
- On February 14, the Patiala House saw violence as a mob, wearing lawyer’s robe, slapped and kicked supporters of Kanhaiya Kumar. Journalists and students bore the brunt of the violence. 
 - Over 400 journalists had taken out a procession after mediapersons were attacked by lawyers at the <keyword id="286287" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Patiala-court">Patiala Court</keyword>. The Supreme Court had slammed unruly behaviour of the lawyers and ordered that both the clients and media persons should be given security in the premises of the courts. 
 
 
 
- On February 17 also, violence was witnessed outside Patiala House Court when two groups of lawyers clashed with each other. Pro-India slogans were raised by lawyers who called themselves 'deshbhakts' and referred to those stopping them as 'deshdrohi'. 
 
- The group of lawyers that attacked journalists said that they cannot be termed 'goons'. Lawyers were heard chanting ‘Vande Mataram’. The Supreme Court was also informed that Kanhaiya Kumar was attacked in the court premises. 
 
- Some reports of stone-pelting at the Patiala House court also surfaced. 
 
- SC restricted the number reporters to five and two supporters of arrested students for the hearing. 
 
- Kanhaiya Kumar has been sent to judicial custody till March 02. Before his hearing, journalists were yet again attacked in the scuffle between two lawyer groups. 
 
- Doctor has been called to provide medical aid to Kanhaiya. 
 
- Kumar has maintained that he did not shout any anti-national slogans and few outsiders were involved in raising anti-India slogans.

Difference of opinions has led to three members of the <keyword id="6356383" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="JNU">JNU</keyword> unit of <keyword id="106559" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Akhil-Bharatiya-Vidyarthi-Parishad">Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad</keyword> (<keyword id="6361618" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="ABVP">ABVP</keyword>) resigning from the student council. 
 
These differences have come in light after the recent JNU incident that has attracted attention from scholars worldwide. The names of these members are Pradeep, who was the joint secretary of ABVP-JNU, Rahul Yadav, the president and Ankit Hans, the secretary of ABVP's unit in the School of Social Sciences. 
 
All three of them have expressed their grief over the way the central government has handled the Rohith Vemula incident. 
 The trio has objected to the government's handling of the recent incident in which JNU student union president <keyword id="3048656" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Kanhaiya-Kumar">Kanhaiya Kumar</keyword> was arrested following some anti-India slogans that were raised in a meeting that he was headed. 
 
"Whosoever responsible for the act must be punished as per the law but the way NDA government [is] tackling the whole issue, the oppression on professors, repeated lawyer attacks on media and Kanhaiya Kumar on court premises is unjustifiable and we think there is a difference between interrogation and crushing ideology and branding entire Left as "anti-national," said the statement. 
 
The three students maintained "veiled persons" had "shouted slogans Bharat tere tukadde honge" at the "event organized by former DSU persons" but did not mention any name. They not only condemned the sloganeering, but also the "media trial which has culminated in anti-JNU sentiments throughout the country." 
 
"We can't be the mouthpiece of such a government which has unleashed oppression on the student community." They have also slammed BJP MLA O P Sharma's action, equating it with "right-wing fascist forces". "Every day we see people assembling at the front gate with Indian flag to beat JNU students, well this is hooliganism not nationalism, you can't do anything in the name of nation, there is a difference between nationalism and hooliganism," the statement said.

Three ABVP-JNU members resign citing difference of opinions

Ten central trade unions on Monday said around 25 crore people will participate in a nationwide strike on January 8 to protest against the government's "anti-people" policies.
 Trade unions INTUC, AITUC, HMS, CITU, AIUTUC, TUCC, SEWA, AICCTU, LPF, UTUC along with various sectoral independent federations and associations had adopted a declaration in September last to go on a nationwide strike on January 8, 2020.
 "We expect participation of not less than 25 crore of working people in the forthcoming National General Strike on January 8, 2020, to be followed by many more actions seeking reversal of the anti-worker, anti-people, anti-national policies of the Government.
 "The Ministry of Labour has failed to assure on any of the demands of workers which called a meeting on January 2, 2020. The attitude of the government is that of contempt towards labour as we construe from its policies and actions," the 10 central trade unions (CTUs) said in a joint statement.
 About 60 organisations of students and elected office bearers of some universities have also decided to join the strike with an agenda to raise voice against increased fee structure and commercialization of education, it said.
 The trade unions condemned the <keyword id="8526257" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="JNU-violence">JNU violence</keyword> and similar incidents in other university campuses and expressed their solidarity with students and teachers all over India. The unions also expressed displeasure over no Indian Labour Conference being held since July 2015, codification of labour laws and privatisation of PSUs.
 "As many as 12 airports are already sold out to private hands, 100 per cent sale of Air India is already decided, decision to sell BPCL taken, BSNL-MTNL merger announced and 93,600 telecom workers already thrown out of jobs under the garb of VRS (voluntary retirement scheme)," it added.
 The unions are also against privatisation in railways, corporatisation of 49 defence production units and forced merger of banks.
 Joint platform of more than 175 farmers and agricultural workers unions will extend its support to workers' demands and observe January 8 as Gramin Bharart Bandh along with their charter of demands, they added. KKS KKS ANU

250 million Indians will join the Jan 8 strike against privatisation - claim trade unions

New Delhi, Jan 6 () Top industrialists Anand Mahindra, Harsh Mariwala and Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw have condemned violence at the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) on Sunday night, saying such acts cannot be tolerated and the perpetrators must be hunted down swiftly.
Speaking up against the violence, Marico Ltd Chairman Harsh Mariwala tweeted, "Coming from the land of non-violence, it's unbecoming of us to witness and encourage these acts of violence. Extremely hurt seeing last evening's news".
Expressing similar views, in a tweet late last evening Mahindra Group Chairman Anand Mahindra said, "It doesn't matter what your politics are. It doesn't matter what your ideology is. It doesn't matter what your faith is. If you're an Indian, you cannot tolerate armed, lawless goons. Those who invaded JNU tonight must be traced &amp; hunted down swiftly &amp; given no quarter..."
Likewise, reacting to a video of an injured student who claimed she was beaten up, Biocon CMD Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw tweeted, "This is unpardonable. Violence cannot be condoned".
Violence broke out at JNU on Sunday night as a group of masked people armed with sticks attacked students and teachers and damaged property on the campus, prompting the administration to call in the police.
RPG Enterprises Chairman drew parallels between India and Australia, saying India is caught in "religious bushfires".
"Hearing me pray for Australia, for its people, for its 500 million animals that have died since the #bushfires, my little one asked why are you not praying for India where there are religious bushfires lit all over the country and students being attacked mercilessly?" Goenka wrote on his Twitter handle.
Rajan Anandan, former head of Google India, who now is associated with venture capital fund Sequoia, also retweeted Mahindra's tweet.
Many sustained injuries and were admitted to AIIMS Trauma Centre here. They were discharged on Monday. JNU Students' Union president Aishe Ghosh suffered a head injury.

Industry leaders condemn JNU violence, seek swift arrest of perpetrators

Student unions of various parties have said that all sections of society should wait for completion of the <keyword id="6356383" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="JNU">JNU</keyword> inquiry before doing the "character assassination" of the university. This, however, doesn’t mean that they support the anti-national slogans that were raised in the university campus. 
 These unions have asked for the release of JNUSU President <keyword id="3048656" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Kanhaiya-Kumar">Kanhaiya Kumar</keyword> and withdrawal of "false charges" against all the university students. 
 These demands have come in a joint press conference released by leaders from All India Students' Association (<keyword id="202881" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Aisa">AISA</keyword>) of CPI(ML), All India Students Federation (<keyword id="340585" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="AISF">AISF</keyword>) of CPI, National Students' Union of India (<keyword id="6372948" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="NSUI">NSUI</keyword>) of Congress, Students Federation of India (<keyword id="6373398" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="SFI">SFI</keyword>) of CPI(M) and Student Forum For Swaraj (<keyword id="951603" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="SFS">SFS</keyword>). 
 They also denounced the assault on Left activists, JNU teachers, students and media that was done on February 15 in Patiala court. These attacks were cited as <keyword id="42498" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="RSS">RSS</keyword> and BJP’s attempts to "spread a reign of terror against differing voices". 
 
"We condemn the anti-national slogans that were raised during the event but who did that is a matter of investigation. Let the inquiry takes it course. Do not character assassinate the entire university by branding it as anti-national," SFI general secretary Vikram Singh said. 
 
"If the entire University is anti-national, then its alumini including Foreign Secretary S Jaishankar, CBI Director Anil Sinha and BJP leader Nirmala Sitharaman are also anti-national," NSUI leader Kumar Raja said. 
 
"Slogans cannot be used as an excuse to crackdown on JNU. We demand the immediate and unconditional release of JNUSU President Kanhaiya and the immediate withdrawal of false charges on all JNU students," they said in a joint statement. 
 
The "ongoing assault on JNU is part of a long process by the Modi government to destroy our best educational institutions," the released added. "We are seeing a pattern wherein the Modi government actively intervenes to shove the RSS-BJP agenda down the throats" of the insitutions," they claimed.

Student unions asks people to wait for the inquiry results before assassinating JNU’s character

The ongoing activities at JNU campus have gathered eyeballs for all the wrong reasons. For the past 14 years, I have been associated with the university, both as a student and as a faculty member, and apart from the educational achievement what I imbibed from that surrounding is the democratic ethos and the right to dissent without any fear. 
 
What went wrong? 
Dissatisfaction from the administration or the system is acceptable and one can be vocal about that in a peaceful manner but being an anti-national and attacking the soul of the country is highly unacceptable. Traditionally, JNU has been a Left inclined university with ideas and propagandas floating over the cup of tea at Ganga Dhaba. 
 
This is not the first time that the anti-national slogans (of mild intensity, of course) are in the air but this time it has gone too far. 
 
Dissatisfaction with the government or any political party can be understood but dissatisfaction with the country cannot be taken for granted. On one side, you are availing all the facilities like subsidized Indian education among others provided to you and on other side you are abusing it should not be tolerated. 
 
First of all this should not have happened in the campus and the administration should have taken care of that. This time all the sensitivity of the freedom of expression has been killed by the protesters. What still remained unanswered is whether they all were university students (especially few with the veils and face masks) or was there some crucial involvement of separatist groups from other states? Delhi Police has already started searching for the clue and raids are being done in few states. Hyderabad University, JNU and now Jadhavpur University, it seems like it’s a preplanned conspiracy of planting the propaganda of anti-nationalism among the students. 
 
In any case, first and foremost objective of any university should be providing quality higher education and everything else is secondary. At JNU, classes are not being conducted with full potential and this is hampering the growth of those students whose future lies in the quality education and not in the association with any political ideology.

JNU uproar: Right to dissent or playing the propaganda

New Delhi, Jan 6 () Eminent economist and JNU professor C P Chandrasekhar on Monday said he had withdrawn from the newly-constituted 28-member Standing Committee on Statistics (SCES), chaired by former chief statistician Pranob Sen, citing the situation in the university.
The committee was constituted last month to improve the quality of data amid criticism of the government over political interferences and is scheduled to meet on Tuesday.
"I regret to inform you that because of the situation in JNU, where I stay, I will be unable to attend tomorrow's meeting.
"Further, I feel that under the current conditions, this committee is unlikely to be able to restore the credibility of the statistical system, which has been undermined in the recent past," Chandrasekhar wrote in an email to the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MOSPI) and the members of the committee.

Chandrasekhar, an eminent economist, however, added that he wished to record his appreciation of the sustained efforts of a large number of colleagues within the statistical system, whom he had greatly valued working with in the past, to build a robust and credible statistical base. 
"It is unfortunate that political pressures have reduced their autonomy now and efforts to consolidate a well-designed system are being subverted. In these circumstances, I will not be able to serve on this committee," he wrote in the email.
Last year in March, expressing concerns over "political interference" in influencing statistical data in India, as many as 108 economists and social scientists had called for restoration of "institutional independence" and integrity to statistical organisations.
Their statement had come in the backdrop of a controversy over a revision of the gross domestic product (GDP) numbers and withholding of employment data by the National Sample Survey Organisation (NSSO).
In November also, the MOSPI had decided not to release the Consumer Expenditure Survey results of 2017-18, citing data quality issues. BKS RC

JNU professor withdraws from panel citing situation in university

New Delhi, Jan 9 () The skill development ministry is believed to have dropped a proposal by the production team of film 'Chhapaak' to encourage acid attack survivors to do better in life, days after the lead character of the movie Deepika Padukone visited the JNU campus to express solidarity with students who were attacked.
 Sources in the Ministry of Skill Development And Entrepreneurship said that as part of regular process under communication and promotional activity for Skill India, the department concerned keeps getting ideas from media houses and organisations to cross-promote each other.
 "The production team had approached Skill India for promoting the subject of the film (Chhapaak)," they said.
 Also, "the actors" from the movie had met some acid attack survivors and specially-abled candidates from "our ecosystem which are also Skill India beneficiaries" inspiring them to do better in life.
 "However, there is no formal engagement with the related party," said a senior official, when asked if the proposal has been dropped.
 On Tuesday evening, Deepika made a surprise visit to the Jawaharlal Nehru University to express solidarity with the students who had been attacked.
 Her decision to stand in silence with JNUSU President Aishe Ghosh, who received head injuries during the attack on Sunday evening, at a public meeting in the campus prompted many in the industry and outside to praise her for "quiet grace" and "courage".

Skill ministry not going ahead with 'Chhapaak' team proposal on acid attack victims

<ul><li>Deepika Padukone became one of the select few - and probably the only A-list star - to have reacted to the JNU mob violence. </li><li>She met the JNUSU president and left without speaking a word. </li><li>A few marketing experts believe that she is playing the ‘promotion’ card. </li></ul>Deepika Padukone has often been criticised for her ‘safe’ fashion sense. What she may lack in sartorial experimentation, she might make up for with her actions. She became one of the select few - and probably the only A-list star - to have reacted to the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) mob violence. She met the JNUSU president and left without saying a word. Nonetheless, it spoke volumes on how few entertainment industry leaders have <a href="https://www.ndtv.com/india-news/deepika-padukone-on-protests-across-india-proud-we-arent-scared-2160356">shared their views on controversial subjects during sensitive political crises. </a>Even the reigning trio - Shah Rukh Khan, Salman Khan and the usually outspoken Aamir Khan too stayed away from commenting on it. “It is a bold move as when stars step out and speak on political, religious and economic issues, they are targeted,” Harish Bijoor, a marketing consultant and branding expert told Business Insider. For the last few weeks, Padukone has been wearing the mask of an acid attack victim and walking around the streets of Mumbai in a unique promotional campaign. However, her solidarity to JNU has unmasked many top actors who had refused to take a stand on burning issues like the controversial Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) — the bone of contention which led to the attack on the university. Ajay Devgn, a leading actor in the Bollywood industry himself, had candidly accepted his inability to speak on the issue. “If we (himself and co-actor Saif Ali Khan) say something, it will offend someone and my film <keyword id="7162500" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="tanhaji">Tanhaji</keyword> will be banned. Who will suffer? The producer, that’s me,” he told the Quint <a href="https://www.thequint.com/videos/ajay-devgn-on-citizenship-amendment-act-nrc-npr-protests">in an interview</a>. From protests to theatres However, Ajay’s problems might be different from that of Deepika. In his movie, he plays the army general of Hindu rulers — the Marathas — so it can be defined as a patriotic movie. But Deepika’s movie Chappak which is to be released on January 10 — based on the real-life story of an acid attack victim — is expected to draw young, urban audiences. And, most college-going students are busy protesting - and a few naysayers would indicate that she is trying her best to bring protesting audiences to theaters. It also helps that Deepika plays the role of a girl seeking social justice. However, few marketing experts believe that she is playing the ‘promotion’ card. Some others say that she could be playing safe. “Nobody who has a film coming out is talking because this move can go either way, and lead to boycotting. But then again, Deepika never spoke during the violence at Jamia Milia,” opined a top branding expert who refused to be identified. All publicity need not be good publicity Bijoor said Deepika’s persona does not make him believe that it’s a publicity stunt. “I do not think it’s a marketing gimmick. If it is, then it’s a bad one and won’t work because people will see through it,” he said.  However, this is not the first time that Deepika has made bold moves uncharacteristic to Bollywood stars. She openly spoke about her struggles with clinical depression. Since there are enough supporters on either side of the spectrum, Padukone might gain as many fans as she lost. Whether her movie will gain from it not — only time will tell.
