A delegation of <keyword id="19896558" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Tamil-Nadu" source="keywords">Tamil Nadu</keyword> <keyword id="19894848" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="BJP" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="BJP" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="BJP">BJP</keyword> leaders led by state party president K Annamalai on Monday called on Governor R N Ravi at Raj Bhavan in connection with the <keyword id="20233532" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Kallakurichi" source="keywords">Kallakurichi</keyword> hooch tragedy, which has claimed 57 lives so far. Meanwhile, leaders of the <keyword id="20020494" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="AIADMK" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="AIADMK" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="AIADMK">AIADMK</keyword> party held a protest in the Kallakurichi district against the DMK-led state government over the same. The protest was headed by Tamil Nadu Opposition Party leader and AIADMK General Secretary Edappadi Palaniswami. It was held opposite the VAS Marriage Hall, Salem Main Road, Kallakurichi District, in Tamil Nadu. The number of people who died in Tamil Nadu after consuming <keyword id="20359588" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="illicit-liquor" source="keywords">illicit liquor</keyword> has risen to 57, according to updated information released by the district administration on Monday. A total of 156 people are undergoing treatment at various Government hospitals in the state after consuming illicit liquor. A total of 110 people are undergoing treatment at the Kallakurichi Government Medical College hospital. Twelve people are admitted at Puducherry 20 people are undergoing treatment at Salem and four in Viluppuram government hospitals. A total of seven people, including five men and two women, who were undergoing treatment at hospitals in Tamil Nadu after consuming illicit liquor have been discharged, according to the Kallakurichi District Magistrate. So far, 32 people have died at the Government Kallakurichi Medical College and Hospital, and 18 at the Government Mohan Kumaramangalam Medical College and Hospital in Salem. Four people have died at the Government Villupuram Medical College and Hospital and three at the Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research (Jipmer) in Puducherry. Earlier on Friday, Tamil Nadu <keyword id="21728762" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="CM-MK-Stalin" source="keywords">CM MK Stalin</keyword> said the state government will take care of the entire education and hostel expenses of children who have lost either one or both of their parents in the Kallakuruchi hooch tragedy. The government will provide Rs 5,000 in monthly assistance until the age of 18 for children who have lost both their parents and Rs 5 lakh will be deposited immediately as a fixed deposit in the names of children who have lost both parents, Stalin said. After the minors turn 18, the amount can be withdrawn with interest, the chief minister said. Similarly, Rs 3 lakh will be deposited as a fixed deposit for children who have lost one parent. Priority will be given to them in all government welfare schemes, the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister said.

61 people have died due to the <keyword id="22117353" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="Kallakurichi-hooch-tragedy" source="keywords">Kallakurichi hooch tragedy</keyword>, as per the <keyword id="20233532" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="kallakurichi" source="keywords">Kallakurichi</keyword> District Collectorate Currently, 91 people are undergoing treatment at the Government Kallakurichi Medical College and Hospital and 32 people have died at the Government Kallakurichi Medical College and Hospital. 20 people have been discharged from the Government Kallakurichi Medical College, as per the <keyword id="20380518" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="hospital-authorities" source="keywords">hospital authorities</keyword>. 10 people have been admitted to the Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research(JIPMER) Puducherry and a total of 6 have been discharged from the hospital. A total of four people have passed away at Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education Research. 30 people are undergoing treatment at the Salem Medical College while 21 have passed away, as reported by hospital authorities. Four people have passed away in the Villupuram Medical College due to consumption of <keyword id="20359588" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="illicit-liquor" source="keywords">illicit liquor</keyword> and 4 are currently admitted in the the Villupuram Medical College. One person has been admitted to the Royapettah Greater Hospital in Chennai. Two people have been discharged from Sri Sanjeevi Hospital. A total of 136 people have been admitted to five hospitals. The total count of people affected due to consumption of illicit liquor has now increased to 225. Earlier today, the National Commission for Scheduled Castes (NCSC) Chairman Kishor Makwana along with the Deputy Chairman of <keyword id="19896558" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Tamil-Nadu" source="keywords">Tamil Nadu</keyword> Commission for Scheduled Castes (TNCSC) Puneeth Pandian and Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of the National Aditya Vidarbha Commission Sanmeet Kaur met the family members of the people who died due to the consumption of illicit liquor in Karunapuram area of the Kallakurichi district. On Wednesday the Tamil Nadu assembly saw uproarious scenes as the AIDMK leaders clad in black shirts protested inside and outside the house. The AIADMK legislators, including the leader of the Opposition Edappadi K Palaniswami, were later suspended from the current Assembly session for disrupting the House proceedings.

Twenty nine people have died after consuming illicit 'packet arrack' in <keyword id="20233532" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Kallakurichi" source="keywords">Kallakurichi</keyword>, district collector M S Prasanth said on Thursday. Speaking to reporters here, the top district official said that 109 people are being treated in a number of hospitals and the status of those in a critical stage 'keeps changing' and it would be updated later. State Minister (Highways) EV Velu said two women and one transgender were among the victims. Prasanth further said sufficient medical professionals, including specialists from nearby government medical colleges have been deployed in the district to handle the situation, even as more number of ambulances with life-support have been stationed. Briefing reporters here, senior Minister EV Velu said it should not be assumed as if 'illicit arrack sale' has happened only under the DMK rule and such incidents have been occuring during all the regimes. "Every government (be it DMK or AIADMK governments) has taken tough action, this government has been taking stern action continuously." Furthermore, he told reporters: "As far as the government is concerned there is no necessity for it to encourage <keyword id="20359588" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="illicit-liquor" source="keywords">illicit liquor</keyword> peddlers and we are taking tough action." "The government will not spare anyone," he said, adding two women and one transgender were among the victims. "I don't like to justify the mistake, this incident must not have happened and since this has happened the chief minister has directed tough action." Be it brewers of illicit arrack or those who sell it, the government has been taking stern action including under Goondas Act. Velu and Health Minister Ma Subramanian are camping in Kallakurichi to render help to the affected people. Actor-politician Vijay, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam chief blamed the negligence of the government for the incident and demanded that the state take 'tough' precautionary measures to prevent recurrence.
