The mutual fund product will provide investors with an opportunity to invest in this precious metal without physically holding it. The ETF’s price will be in line with the price movement of silver. The fund house says this investment product will provide investors an opportunity to hedge against the ongoing economic uncertainties and geopolitical risks prevalent across several major global economies. A silver ETF provides easy access to silver without actually physically holding it and also help in diversifying the investor portfolio. “Our Silver ETF launch is in line with our continued effort to provide easy and efficient access to various asset classes. It will provide convenient access to Silver as an asset which is not only a precious metal but also has many industrial uses. The consolidation in Silver prices since the start of the year provides a good opportunity for those looking to allocate some money to this asset for diversification,” said Nilesh Shah, group president and MD at Kotak Mahindra Asset Management Co. As per the World Silver Survey 2022, post the pandemic, demand for silver has outstripped supply due to uptick in industrial activity and a surge in retail investor appetite for the metal. The metal has clocked 43% absolute returns in the 5-year period. However, the past performance may or may not be sustained in the future. Silver prices are driven by its industrial consumption and supply side dynamics. The precious metal is a hedge against the traditional equity-debt portfolio, as silver has low-correlation with both asset classes. However, silver is a high-risk asset class and, therefore, it is more suited to investors who understand precious metals and commodity cycles. The new fund offer (NFO) of the Silver ETF opens for subscription on November 21 and closes on December 5. The units of the fund will be in the form of creation unit size or in multiples thereof. Each creation unit consists of 30,000 units of Kotak Silver ETF. Kotak Mahindra MF launches silver ETFs to hedge against ongoing uncertainties

<ul><li>Historically, silver has been a potential hedge against times when the markets have gone through a crisis. </li><li>The Kotak Silver ETF Fund of Fund is an open ended ETF replicating/tracking the price of silver. </li></ul>Kotak Mahindra AMC announced the launch of Kotak Silver ETF Fund of Fund on Monday. It’s an open-ended fund of fund scheme that invests in units of Kotak <keyword id="16779851" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="silver-exchange-traded-funds" source="Orion">Silver exchange traded funds</keyword> or ETFs. The New Fund Offer opens for public subscription on March 13, 2023 and closes on March 27, 2023. “We are launching Kotak Silver ETF Fund of Fund to make it easier for investors to diversify their portfolios with convenient access to this precious metal, which has various industrial applications. The current silver prices present a potential opportunity for those interested in allocating funds to this asset in the medium to long term,” said Nilesh Shah, managing director, Kotak Mahindra Asset Management Co. Apart from jewellery, silver is used for various purposes. Every computer, mobile phone, automobile, photovoltaics, applications and solar cells, ball bearings, catalysts and water purification devices use silver. Silver is also used in medicines, and plays an important role in renewable technology. Demand for silver on the rise According to the World Silver Survey, 2021 saw the largest annual growth in mined silver. The demand for silver has also recently overpowered its supply. Record inflows into silver Exchange Traded Products (ETPs) were also recorded in 2021, With a rise of 6%, ETP holdings surpassed one billion ounces. In the past, silver as a commodity had provided protection during crises. For instance, during the recent Russia-Ukraine conflict, while Nifty50 fell by 10%, silver prices surged by 12%, said Kotak AMC in its press release. According to Bloomberg Data, during Covid 19 (February 1, 2020 to March 24, 2020) Nifty50 returned -33% while silver returned -14%. During the subprime mortgage (January 1, 2008 to February 27, 2009), Nifty50 gave negative returns of 54% while silver gave a positive 13% return. Silver has generated 80% returns in the last five years. The correlation of silver with other asset classes is low. With gold, Nifty and debt it has a correlation of 0.6, 0.3 and 0.2% respectively, thus making it an important part of a portfolio, Kotak AMC said. Investing in silver via an ETF has several benefits. “There are no making costs (like in purchase of silver jewelry) or storage costs. Investing in silver gives your portfolio the required diversification as we have seen how the correlation of silver with other asset classes is low,” Kotak said, adding that investors may consult their financial expert before making any investment decision.

Data suggests that close to 50% of the world's silver is consumed by electronics, auto, power, pharma and many other industries but the supply and availability for recycling is limited. DSP believes that as the world shifts to renewable and cleaner energy resources, there is potential for demand to go up since silver is a crucial raw material. DSP Silver ETF would allow investors to buy the precious metal starting from a ticket size of ₹5000. The new fund offer (NFO) of the Silver ETF opens for subscription on 1 August and closes on 12 August. Besides, silver can also potentially act as leverage against a depreciating rupee. This is because silver prices in India are derived from international silver prices but are then converted after adding currency effects and other costs of landing. “Investing in silver via an ETF is a modern and smart way for investors to gain exposure to this precious metal in an easy, digital form. Increasing demand for silver in industries, newer technologies and a shift to renewable sources of energy and the safe-haven demand can also act as favourable tailwinds for the metal. In the race to acquire the fund management business of <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Goldman+Sachs+Group+">Goldman Sachs Group</a> Inc in India, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Reliance+Mutual+Fund+">Reliance Mutual Fund</a> and <keyword id="45123" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="HDFC">HDFC</keyword> Mutual Fund are trying hard. 
 
According to a person familiar with the development, both the suitors are in the final round of negotiations and hope to clinch the deal. “However, it depends on who is more aggressive," said one of them. The deal is likely to be announced shortly,” he said. 
 
The Goldman’s MF business has assets of about Rs 7,132 crore. 
 
Let’s take a look at the profile of both the suitors! 
 <keyword id="106417" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Reliance-Mutual-Fund">Reliance Mutual Fund</keyword>, which had assets under management of Rs 1.53 lakh crore on September 30, is likely to bid aggressively as it looks to bridge the gap with number two <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=ICICI+Mutual+Fund+">ICICI Mutual Fund</a> that manages about Rs 1.65 lakh crore. 
 
On the other hand, HDFC Mutual Fund is looking at consolidating its number one position with assets of Rs 1.71 lakh crore. 
 
"The deal is expected to be valued at about 3-4% of AUM (<a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=ICICI+Mutual+Fund+">assets under management</a>). With an AUM of Rs 7,132 crore, the transaction value should be around Rs 250 crore," said another person who is aware about the development. 
 
Besides adding Rs 7,132 crore of AUM, a deal would also help the acquirer gain a foothold in the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=exchange-traded+fund+%28ETF%29+business+">exchange-traded fund (ETF) business</a> that is growing in popularity with local investors, mirroring global trends. 
 
ETFs have been witnessing sustained growth in markets such as the US in the past decade. 
 But for India, the ETF market is relatively new. <keyword id="6361649" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Goldman-Sachs">Goldman Sachs</keyword> Mutual Fund, which has 13 schemes, is primarily focused on the ETF segment. It has seven equity-oriented ETFs, one liquid ETF, one gold ETF, one international ETF, two equity schemes and an open-ended debt scheme. About 95% of its assets are in ETFs. 
 
Goldman Sachs Mutual Fund was awarded a central government mandate last year to sell the Central Public Sector Enterprise ETF. The government sold a part of its stake in state-run companies through an ETF for the first time, raising Rs 4,000 crore by disposing of shares in 10 state-controlled companies. 
 
Goldman Sachs entered the Indian mutual fund industry in 2011 by acquiring Benchmark Mutual Fund for Rs 120 crore. 
 "The (likely) exit of Goldman Sachs from the asset management business conclusively proves that the foreign <keyword id="109711" type="POSITION" weightage="40" keywordseo="Fund-manager">fund manager</keyword>s are finding it difficult to make inroads into the Indian investors' mind space," said a fund manager with a leading foreign fund. 
 He said: "In the last few years, we have witnessed the exit of Fidelity, PineBridge, <keyword id="48670" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Morgan-Stanley">Morgan Stanley</keyword>, ING among others." 
 
Foreign firms are finding it difficult to compete against local companies such as HDFC, ICICI, Reliance, Birla and UTI, except for outfits such as Blackrock and Franklin Templeton. 
 
Dhirendra Kumar, founder and CEO of Value Research, is of the view that foreign fund managers find it difficult to navigate India's investment landscape. Value Research is an independent mutual fund research house. 
 
In 2014, PineBridge Mutual Fund sold its domestic mutual fund schemes to Kotak Mahindra AMC, Morgan Stanley sold its domestic MF business to HDFC AMC and ING MF was acquired by Birla Sun Life AMC. In 2012, L&amp;T Finance acquired Fidelity's mutual fund business in India.

Equity benchmark <keyword id="6484188" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="sensex" source="Orion">Sensex</keyword> declined over 410 points to close below the 61,000-mark on Thursday, tracking weakness in M&amp;M, Bajaj Finserv and Reliance Industries amid widespread selling pressure in global markets. A depreciating rupee also put pressure on domestic equities, traders said. In a subdued session, the 30-share BSE Sensex ended 419.85 points or 0.69 per cent lower at 60,613.70. The index moved between a high of 60,848.73 and a low of 60,425.47. On similar lines, the broader NSE Nifty fell 128.80 points or 0.71 per cent to end at 18,028.20. Axis Bank was the biggest loser in the Sensex pack, shedding 3.54 per cent, followed by Bajaj Finserv, Titan, M&amp;M, Bajaj Finance and IndusInd Bank. In contrast, HDFC twins, Bharti Airtel, Kotak Bank, Dr Reddy's and HUL were the gainers, climbing up to 1.13 per cent. Elsewhere in Asia, bourses in Shanghai, Tokyo, Seoul and Hong Kong closed with significant losses. Stock exchanges in Europe too were trading in the negative territory during the afternoon session. International oil benchmark Brent crude slipped 0.06 per cent to USD 92.59 per barrel. The rupee depreciated by 30 paise to close at 81.77 (provisional) against the US dollar on Thursday. Foreign institutional investors (FIIs) remained net buyers in the Indian capital market on Wednesday, as they bought shares worth Rs 386.83 crore, as per exchange data. The IPO received good demand from retail investors as this portion was subscribed by 3.03 times. Archean plans to raise ₹805 crore through fresh issue of shares via the IPO along with an offer for sale of ₹657 crore by promoters and existing shareholders. It is also the only manufacturer of ‘sulphate of potash’ from natural sea brine in India. Sulphate of potash, also known as potassium sulphate, is a high-end, specialty fertilizer for chlorine-sensitive crops and also has medical uses. Majority of the company’s sales are derived from selling to Chinese companies. As of FY22, 36.3% of its revenue comes from China, 29.68% from India, 19.46% from rest of Asia, 6.23% from Japan, 5.62% from South Korea, 1.79% from Africa and 0.92% from Europe. The grey market premium (GMP) of the company’s shares are at ₹70 per share. GMP is the premium at which IPO shares are traded in an unofficial market before they are listed on the stock exchanges. The IPO opened on November 9, and will close on November 11. <ul><li>The multiplex behemoth now owns more than 1,650 screens across over 350 properties in 110 cities in the country.</li><li>The combined entity aims to open 180-200 screens per year, across formats, in the next two years.</li><li>The merged entity can definitely achieve bigger goals, but needs good content.</li></ul>After the merger of two <keyword id="16783584" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="multiplex-chains-PVR-and-Inox-Leisure" source="Orion">multiplex chains PVR and Inox Leisure</keyword> this year, the merged entity has become a behemoth in the country, and fifth largest listed multiplex chain globally by screen count. While the merger was announced last March, the record date for the scheme of amalgamation between the two multiplex operators happened in February 2023. The combined entity will start trading with the name PVR-INOX on exchanges in March 2023 and their combined financials would be reported from 4QFY23. The multiplex behemoth now owns more than 1,650 screens across 350 properties, in 110 cities. “PVR-INOX now controls 18% screen share (43% share in multiplex screens in India) and 30% box-office share (over 50% share of multiplex box office). The merged entity commands the highest multiplex market share in all key regions of India. PVR-INOX would become the fifth-largest listed multiplex chain globally by screen count with the highest number of admissions per screen (around 127,000 admissions/screen in 2019),” said a report by Kotak Institutional Equities. The combined entity aims to open 180-200 screens per year, across formats, in the next two years. “Capex per year would be ₹8-8.5 billion (₹800-850 crore). Over 40% new screen openings will come from the South as it remains underpenetrated,” said the report. While merged entity gains the lion’s share, real issue still remains poor content While the merged entity can definitely achieve bigger goals, analysts believe the real issue still remains poor content leading to flop movies on screen. “The management has guided for annual synergy benefits of ₹2.25 billion (₹225 crore) at the EBITDA (earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortisation) level in the next 12-24 months,” said a report by Kotak Institutional Equities. Analysts say that the merged entity has no real competitor and should remain focused on strengthening its position at the cost of single-screen theatres and smaller chains. Yet, there are challenges that all multiplexes will face bringing in the mega footfalls. For one, the Hindi cinema industry itself is facing the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/business/news/its-not-bollywood-films-its-the-superstars-that-people-seem-to-be-tired-of/articleshow/92382077.cms">shifting trend and migration of audiences to South movies</a> which captured audiences with larger-than-life characters. Rapid adoption of OTT, proliferation of social media and an active ‘Boycott Bollywood’ campaign and higher ticket prices have impacted footfalls in theatres, say analysts at Emkay Global. “While focus of the merged entity now shifts to realising synergies, the crucial issue of footfall recovery remains moot. Post-Covid, we have witnessed a clear dichotomy in box-office performance, with a high proportion of movies turning out to be duds; we believe the main culprit is the sub-par content quality, punctured by the weak critic and audience reviews,” said a report by Emkay Global. Not star power, alone It’s because of the increasing Southern push that <keyword id="4568700" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="PVR-INOX" source="Orion">PVR Inox</keyword> are planning to boost the addition of new cinemas there. “With Bollywood content not up to the mark, footfalls have not seen a meaningful uptick post Covid. Only select movies with differentiated offerings have managed to taste success at the box office. As we have emphasised in the past too, Bollywood’s recovery is critical to box-office collections, with regional and Hollywood contribution being only sporadic in nature,” said the report. Bollywood continues to witness poor movie performance with most movies including Amitabh Bachchan-starrer Goodbye and Uunchai, Akshay Kumar’s Ram Setu and Ranveer Singh’s Cirkus not meeting expectations except for Drishyam 2 and Pathaan. “Going ahead too, we believe that star power alone cannot drive collections, if there is no differentiating factor in the movie,” said the Emkay Global report. In Q3 FY23, only one Bollywood movie i.e Drishyam 2 managed to break the ₹100 crore box office barrier. “CY22 has been one of the worst years for Bollywood, with very few movies finding traction. A mere 7% of the major movies that were released in the CY21/22 managed to recover their investment and yielded some profit. Prior to Covid, this was close to 30%, with more than 40% of movies doing well in CY19,” said a report by Emkay. While Inox-PVR have a bigger screen presence, they need what it takes to bring in audiences — better movies, bigger hits from Bollywood and Hollywood alike – in addition to South superhits.
