Kotak Karma's latest campaign questions the widespread tradition of saving gold for daughter's marriage; says girls can win gold themselves

To aid drivers impacted by lockdown, <keyword id="429713" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Mahindra-Logistics">Mahindra Logistics</keyword> on Monday launched an initiative that has provision of providing Rs. 3,000 each to every drivers bank account. The initiative named HOPE (<keyword id="9087161" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="helping-our-people-during-emergencies">Helping Our People during Emergencies</keyword>), aims to support drivers financially to aid the battle against the COVID-19 lockdown. The nationwide lockdown has impacted a large number of drivers, whether they are drivers ferrying goods between states, or those who drive taxis and for ride-sharing companies. These drivers are mostly stranded and are struggling to make ends meet. The company has partnered with Samhita Social Ventures - a social enterprise and SuperMoney - a financial lending tech platform to reach out to the beneficiaries within ecosystem. This move will create an ecosystem to channelise CSR funds of other companies to provide economic support and recovery to workers, the company said in a statement. "As a part of the initiative, Mahindra Logistics will be providing immediate relief by transferring Rs 3,000 to each driver's bank account, to buy essential commodities. This will be followed by other support provided to these drivers like health insurance cover, leveraging government schemes and loan guaranteeing model," the statement said. In addition to this, Mahindra Logistics would strengthen healthcare professionals' abilities to respond and provide support to affected families using digital channels, it added. "With over 30 per cent of commercial vehicles stranded on roads across the country, drivers need urgent support. Truck drivers and their families are in immediate need of cash for food and other basic facilities," Mahindra Logistics MD &amp; CEO Rampraveen Swaminathan said. Swaminathan further said "we have launched several programs to support the driver community along with our business partners. Through this initiative, of short term financial relief and hope we aim to help these drivers and their families until the situation in the country is restored," Swaminathan said. Samhita Social Ventures Founder and CEO Priya Naik said :"Through our India Workers' Alliance, we are delighted to partner with Mahindra Logistics, to support India's blue collar and gig economy workers whose lives and livelihoods have been severely impacted. Lockdown: Mahindra Logistics to provide relief-fund to drivers

Out of 216 companies surveyed by Futurescape and IIM Udaipur commissioned by Economic Times, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=mahindra">Mahindra &amp; Mahindra</a> topped the list. 
 
M&amp;M jumped two places and in this year’s CSR survey, there were four Tata group companies in the top 10. 
 
This time, the focus of the companies has shifted from anticipating the change to implementing it. 
 
Mahindra &amp; Mahindra’s key CSR areas focussed on girl child, youth and <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=farmers">farmers</a> through several programmes. Its chain of schools-Mahindra Pride Schools-provides livelihood training to youth from socially and economically disadvantaged communities. 
 
Meanwhile, the second slot was taken by <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Tata+Power">Tata Power</a>, which is working in areas like education, environment, community development, health, safety, security, resource and energy conservation, etc. The total CSR spending of Tata Power in FY15 was at Rs 31.1 crore as against the 2% of PAT requirement of Rs 29.8 crore. 
 
Third, fourth, fifth positions were taken by <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Tata+Steel">Tata Steel</a>, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=L%26T">L&amp;T</a> and <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=tata+chemicals">Tata Chemicals</a>, respectively. 
 The CSR spending of <keyword id="6357147" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Tata-Steel">Tata Steel</keyword> in 2014-15 stood at Rs 171.46 crore, while L&amp;T spent Rs 76.54 crore on CSR in the last fiscal. 
 
Tata Chemicals, which focused on sustainable community development and preserving the ecosystem, in the last fiscal, spent Rs 12.76 crore on CSR. 
 
It is worth mentioning that Jubilant Life Sciences, a healthcare company, entered the top ten list and there was no foreign player. 
 
Jubilant Bhartia Foundation (JBF) focuses on elementary education, improving health indices, employability and promoting social entrepreneurship. 
 Meanwhile, <keyword id="6355199" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Reliance-Industries">Reliance Industries</keyword> was at the 11th spot and TCS at 17th.

Despite all these so-called achievements, the gap between developed and other economies is widening. The gap between wealthy and poor is growing. The environmental degradation is becoming a bigger challenge for the future generations. 
 
However, the majority of the countries address these challenges by relying on voluntary actions of the large corporates as well as populist measures by the government. There have been little efforts to collaborate and strategize the action plan for these issues or setup the outcome driven metrics for performance assessment as to what has been achieved, what not, and why? 
The launch of global initiatives like MDGs followed by SDGs however signifies a gradual recognition and acceptance of the social and environmental inequalities. The governments and corporates have started talking about collaborative actions, strategic CSR, metrics and assessment as a way forward. 
 India has mandated Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) activity for the corporates by introducing the CSR law on 1 Apr 2014. The first objective of CSR law is to raise the consciousness and motivation among the corporates to undertake social and environmental action as the core of the business model rather than a fringe activity. This is needed to achieve significant impact at the grassroots level. The second objective is to encourage the social and environmental impact measurement and reporting. During 2014 Independence Day, The Prime Minister of India, Sh. <keyword id="6354477" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Narendra-Modi">Narendra Modi</keyword> put emphasis on "walk together, we move together, we think together, we resolve together, and together we take this country forward." 
 
The new CSR law mandates long-term orientation of social and environmental initiatives having better accountability and responsibility by the corporates. To be precise, there is an attempt to make a shift from pure capitalism towards a socially responsive mode of capitalism. This implies enabling a change in focus from checkbook charity based model to socially responsible, engaged and embedded business model where companies invest their time, capital and manpower on the long-term basis for sustainable social and environmental interventions. 
 
India, as a country represents a land of extremes and contrasts. One aspect of India highlights the country as a modernizing economy, which is dynamically becoming a force for social innovation. India is known as one of the largest emerging economies having a population of more than 1.25 billion. This represents 1/6th of the world's people. The majority of this population lies at Base of the Pyramid (BoP). India is also one of the fastest growing economies having an average GDP growth rate of around 7% (2011-15). According to UN Report, India has the world's largest youth population of 356 million (10-24 years old). Another contrasting aspect of India involves low rating on Human Development Index (HDI) and Social Progress Index (SPI) calculated by UNDP and Social Progress Imperative respectively. HDI 2015 ranks India at 130 among 180 nations while SPI 2015 ranks India at 101 among 133 countries. HDI ranks the countries on the basis of three dimensions – to lead a long and healthy life, ability to acquire knowledge, and ability to achieve a decent standard of living. SPI measures the social progress of a nation on the basis of three dimensions – basic human needs, foundation of well-being, and opportunity. The majority of the population in India lives in the rural areas; lacks access to the formal market ecosystem for the fulfilment of their basic needs and transacts in an informal economy. Around two-third of the population in India earns less than $2/day (USD 1990 PPP level) and lives and transacts in an informal economy. 
 
Traditionally, large Indian corporates have contributed to social and environmental issues by undertaking convenience based philanthropic initiatives at random, which are not necessarily integrated into the core of the business. However, this approach has created a limited impact on the society and environment. The basic needs and challenges faced by the underserved segment in India require systemic solutions, which are scalable, replicable, integrated and sustainable over a long term. These solutions need to have top management buy-in and involve continuous monitoring with proper impact assessment and evaluation. The companies need to integrate the social and environmental focus areas into the core of their business model, something which had been missing from the social and environmental initiatives of the majority of the companies before the introduction of CSR law. 
 There exist many examples in India where social and ecological focus areas are getting integrated into the core business model of the company. In FMCG, companies like <keyword id="165043" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="hll">HLL</keyword> have engaged the rural women as “Shakti Ammas” for selling its products in the villages. This is a shift from the traditional wholesaler-to-retailer distribution and delivery model. The rural women get trained in the sale of daily use products like soaps, detergents etc. door-to-door. At one end, this leads to last-mile channels for creating awareness and delivery thereby generating volumes. At another end, this creates viable income opportunities for rural women. In agriculture, companies like Mother Dairy have brought together the marginal farmers and milk producers to bring their products like fruits, vegetables, and milk to the market. The marginal farmers get transparent pricing for their products being sold to Mother Dairy besides getting market exposure, training and consultancy on improving the quality of their offerings. In Telecom, <keyword id="15491" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Airtel">Airtel</keyword> has launched "Apna Choupal", a voice-based value added service for delivering information on day-to-day activities like agriculture, job, education, weather and health to the customers in rural and semi-urban areas. In inter-state bus transport, redBus has created a multi-sided technology platform, which provides a real-time interface between the unorganized small bus operators and bus travellers regarding seat availability and booking. redBus has eliminated the information asymmetry between bus operators and inter-state bus passengers thereby reducing the high bargaining power of travel agents. The small bus operators no longer depend on travel agents for selling their seat inventory. The bus passengers no longer depend on travel agents for booking their tickets. Then, there are other companies like <keyword id="45224" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Mahindra">Mahindra</keyword> group, which have created a digital platform – “Spark the Rise” to stimulate social innovation by crowd-sourcing the best ideas from the individuals and groups related to energy, technology, agriculture and rural development issues. 
 
What acts as a differentiator in the above examples is the willingness of the companies to view the social and environmental issues from the same angle as the need for economic growth and financial performance. That implies getting CEO and top leadership on board to be a part of social and environmental initiatives, integrating the social and ecological focus areas into the core of the business as well as ensuring that appropriate social and environmental impact metrics are identified, assessed and reported to all the stakeholders in a similar manner as financial performance. 
 However, to enable large scale adoption of <keyword id="2875288" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="shared-value">shared value</keyword> philosophy and compliance with CSR law, there is a need for systemic focus and concerted efforts of the government, consulting organizations and other social institutions towards awareness building and behavior change orientation among the corporates. Creating Shared Value is indeed a strategic approach for the corporates, who are aiming to make a sustainable social and environmental contribution to the needs of the underserved segment after the introduction of the new CSR law in India.

At Davos: India's pioneer electric car maker is pushing for action against climate change

Mumbai, Jan 22 () Philanthropy arms of top corporates, including the Tatas, Mahindras, Godrejs and Premjis, on Wednesday announced a partnership to minimise the climate change impact.
 The India Climate Collaborative (ICC) will be working to strengthen the climate community locally, build a climate narrative and drive solutions that will ensure both the natural world and people thrive.
 The announcement comes amid an increased conversation on climate change, with the 50th session of the World Economic Forum in Davos generating the maximum flutter, which has also seen US President Donald Trump calling the greens "prophets of doom".
 "Our collective leadership through the ICC will indicate to the world that Indian philanthropy is ready to be a leader in climate action," Tata Trusts Chairman Ratan Tata said in a statement.
 The ICC seeks to build a collaborative platform for diverse voices, innovative solutions, and collective investments, the statement said, without quantifying the money which the corporates are pooling together for the platform.
 Vidya Shah of financial services firm Edelweiss' corporate social arm, Rohini Nilekani of Infosys' CSR arm and banker Harmendra Kothari are among the other names in the 40-member collective.
 "It is clear that the world cannot continue to pursue a business-as-usual approach and nobody can solve the problem on their own. Business, government, and philanthropy must collaborate within and among themselves to drive results quickly and at scale," Mahindra Group Chairman Anand Mahindra was quoted as saying.
 "Together we will find solutions that will make climate action effective and impactful," he added.
 Nadir Godrej, the managing director of Godrej Indistries, said businesses can do a lot for the planet in a cost effective way.
 "We have to look at localised solutions that can solve global problems, and this will need businesses, governments, academia, and individuals to work together to identify and scale up solutions. The role of philanthropy will be to augment these efforts," he said.
 Others who have joined the initiative include Swades Foundation, Sanctuary Asia Foundation, Mongabay-India, Indian Development Review (IDR), People's Archive for Rural India (PARI), Climate Collective Foundation, SELCO, and the Foundation for Ecological Security (FES).

In comparison, TCS was able to bag $8.9 billion worth of contracts in its first-quarter. The key thing to watch out for during Infosys earnings will be the size of the new deals

New Delhi, Dec 23 () Homegrown auto major Mahindra &amp; Mahindra (M&amp;M) on Monday announced a rejig of its top management in automotive and farm equipment sectors with its President for auto vertical Rajan Wadhera set to retire and step down from executive role.
Announcing changes in the group corporate office as well as in auto and farm sectors, to be effective from April 1, 2020, the company said Veejay Nakra will be appointed as CEO of the auto division. 
He will have operating responsibility for passenger vehicles and entire commercial business with profit and loss accountability, except for product development process, M&amp;M said in a statement.
It further said Hemant Sikka will head the farm equipment sector, while R Velusamy will be appointed as the chief of Global Product Development (Automotive) and Vinod Sahay as Chief Purchase Officer of AFS (auto and farm sectors).
Nakra, Sikka, Velusamy and Sahay will report to Rajesh Jejurikar, who will join M&amp;M Board as Executive Director AFS from April 1, 2020, it said.
M&amp;M said Rajeev Goyal will be appointed as CFO of AFS. He will have dual reporting to Jejurikar and S Durgashankar, who will have an enhanced role as Group Controller of Finance and Accounts working closely with CFOs of all group businesses.
The company further said its agri business headed by Ashok Sharma will move from AFS and report to SP Shukla, who will also continue to head the Aerospace, Defence and Steel Sector, reporting to Anish Shah, who will transition to become Managing Director and CEO on April 2, 2021.
Rajeshwar Tripathi will be the chief human resources officer for AFS. He will have dual reporting to Jejurikar and Ruzbeh Irani, who is slated to head M&amp;M's Group HR and communications, which includes CSR, Ethics and CIS.
Last week, M&amp;M had announced a rejig of its top management with Anand Mahindra, 64, transitioning to the role of non-executive chairman from executive chairman, effective April 1, 2020.
 The firm also reappointed Pawan Kumar Goenka as the managing director with additional responsibilities of chief executive officer for a year, effective April 1, 2020, and he will retire after his term ends. RKL ANU

M&M rejigs top management in auto, farm divisions

Retail giant <keyword id="6354742" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Flipkart">Flipkart</keyword> said that it reduced single use plastics by 25% until August 2019, with multiple initiatives across its packaging value chain. State-owned Air India too announced that it will ban plastic products on its flights from October 2. This will include plastic bags, cups, plates, straws and more. They will be replaced by paper products. Creating alternatives for single-use plastic packaging: Flipkart Flipkart has a long term plan to use 100% recycled plastics in its own supply chain by March 2021. It’s planning to also use recycled paper bags for packaging. “Creating alternatives for single-use plastic packaging is one of the significant steps we have taken towards fulfilling our commitment to create a sustainable ecosystem. Our long-term vision is to eliminate the use of plastic and maximise the use of recycled and renewable materials,” said Kalyan Krishnamurthy, Group CEO, Flipkart. Indian companies have been cognizant of Indian government’s move to reduce plastic consumption and achieve recycling. States like Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Himachal Pradesh and Telangana have banned single-use plastics. Uttar Pradesh and Kanataka too banned products which quality as single-use plastics without using the term. Plastic bottles will be banished: Anand Mahindra Anand Mahindra too promised that ‘plastic bottles will be banished’ from his company. The chairman of the automobile giant which also makes electric cars, spoke at the World Economic Forum about the need of business leaders coming together for the cause. “The business community too recognises that this is not a problem they are solving alone or something you check on your CSR (corporate social responsibility) box. This is the biggest business opportunity for the next few decades,” Mahindra said. Meanwhile, another IT giant Wipro and its founder Azim Premji too stressed on the importance of recycling. “This year, we have significantly scaled up the use of renewable energy for our operations, which now contributes 40% of our total consumption. Recycled water now contributes to 42% of our total water usage” Premji said at his annual general meeting.

But, there is a peculiar situation in India, where the car makers and the dealers can’t agree whether the sales in the month of November were good or not! The recommendation from the Parliamentary panel has come at a time when car makers like Maruti and Mahindra &amp; Mahindra have already announced discounts⁠— a usual fair at the end of every year⁠— after a losing an entire year to the pandemic and its extended impact. The recovery of this segment of industry is important because it employs a large number of people, many unskilled or less-skilled ones, and as per the panel’s estimate, 345,000 people have already lost their jobs. These are major items recommended by the Parliamentary Standing Committee: <ul><li>Consider wages paid to contract workers as charity: The committee recommended that the expenditure incurred by automakers for making payments to the temporary and contract labour during the lockdown period should be eligible as corporate social responsibility (CSR) expense. This move will help the automaker from tax paid on salaries. </li></ul><ul><li>Give more time to pay suppliers and vendors: It also recommended that the condition to avail ITC (Input Tax Credit) requiring payment of invoice to the supplier within 180 days of invoice to be done away with, till the situation returns to normal. Or at least should be provided with a waiver of interest which is charged from the date of invoice of the supplier, as most payments to the vendors will be deferred in the present scenario. The input credit helps the automaker to reduce the already paid raw material tax at the time of paying tax on output. </li></ul><ul><li>Reduce need for testing and regulatory approvals: A provision should be made for acceptance of self-certification by OEMs, instead of testing and approval by Government agencies for meeting regulatory requirements. Also a prioritised attention should be given to new approvals of alternate materials/parts identified for testing for compliance and validation purposes and fast track approvals by testing agencies. </li></ul><ul><li>Double the waiver on demurrage charge: Instead of 50%, 100% waiver on demurrage charges to be provided at the Airports/Seaports and rail yards until 1 month post resumption of full commercial production. </li></ul><ul><li>Reduce depreciation on value of vehicles: To make up the lost sales in March 2020 vehicles purchased till May 30 be permitted to enjoy 6 months depreciation in FY 2019-2020 — which will help in stimulating sales. </li></ul><ul><li>Discount on research and development: The government should also give a temporary exemption on import/export taxes and a 50% discount in testing prices in National Automotive Testing and R&amp;D Infrastructure Project (NATRIP) facilities.</li></ul><ul><li>More loans for dealers, but with less collateral: The Committee also recommended that the collateral norms for regular loan products for Auto Dealers should be moderate for availing required finance. It addressed that though banks have been facing various challenges because of bad loans, however, they should not look at all financial lendings with the same eye as the recovery rate is very high in the <keyword id="46265" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Auto-sector">auto sector</keyword>.</li></ul><ul><li>Financial incentives in the Scrappage Policy: The committee said that in addition to setting of Automotive Vehicle Scrapping Facility (AVSF) centres across the country, the government should make provisions for upfront financial incentives in the Scrappage Policy to boost demand for purchase of new vehicles. </li></ul><ul><li>GST reduction: To mitigate this cost increase, the Committee said the reduced GST rate to 18% from 28% at the moment. It said it will bring down a sizable amount in vehicle price creating more demand for newer vehicles. India’s auto stocks cheer after Parliamentary Panel agrees that they need more stimulus and the dealers need loans with less collateral

 As reported by Economic Times, <keyword id="46431" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="India-Inc">India Inc</keyword> is gradually raising its efforts and is supposed to reach the targets on time. India Inc, reportedly, is adapting innovative tools and ideas for timely completion of the project and that too at a minimal cost. 
 With public sector firms like Coal India and <keyword id="45179" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="NTPC">NTPC</keyword> running ahead of the private sector i.e. Bharti, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Infosys">Infosys</a>, Mahindra, TCS and <keyword id="6374528" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Toyota">Toyota</keyword>. M&amp;M, on the other hand, is expected to meet the targets with constructing 15,000 units by August 3 and Toyota, reportedly is targeting for the construction of 500 units. 
 
<a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Bharti+Group">Bharti Group</a> has made 4,000 toilets so far and out of them not all are under the government's sanitation program meant for schools. 
 
Japanese automaker Toyota has scaled up its toilet building plan and has constructed over 268 of the 500 toilets till now with modern water conservation technology. With Hindustan Zinc, simultaneously, reaching the 450 mark, CII, out of 4,000 has built 3,900 units. 
 
With companies stirred up for such projects, they are even coming up with innovative ideas like e-toilets, chemical toilets and also double pit ones. Also, they’ve explained that the cost of construction is also not so high. For instance, Mahindra is building a toilet block with five units at Rs 2.3 lakh each, while Toyota — which has the toilets designed specially by its team — is spending around Rs 2 lakh per toilet. 
 For several companies, the <keyword id="6361202" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Swachh-Bharat">Swachh Bharat</keyword> initiative has emerged as a key component of its clean manufacturing process. Companies are using latest technology to suit different areas and the focus is on low maintenance and water use. "Sanitation projects are not just a CSR activity but a small contribution by Toyota to educate today's young students about the basic hygiene and the importance of clean environment for the future growth of India," said Toyota Kirloskar MD Naomi Ishii. 
 
India Inc has a few complaints too. For one, information flow is poor and the scheme got off to a slow start, it says. The biggest challenge was selecting the location as companies wanted to build the units near their area of operation. The other worry was related to maintenance as companies did not want the money to sink.
