New Delhi, May 27 () Restaurant players have started a dialogue with mall owners to explore new ways of engagement like revenue share model in the post-COVID-19 period, the National Restaurant Association of India (NRAI) said on Wednesday. The NRAI explained that restaurants do not expect the business volume in the post-pandemic period to be more than 30 per cent to 40 per cent of the pre-lockdown numbers. "Considering that the proportion of fixed operating expenses in our business is very high, this may lead to massive operating losses to many businesses unless the expenses are brought down significantly and a critical expense like rentals is converted into a variable cost," it added. The NRAI said it has written to all malls owners that the mandated lockdown has forced restaurants to shut shop and prevented the malls to allow entry to guests, staff or suppliers of restaurants. This is a clear case of force majeure and therefore all charges of rentals or common area maintenance (CAM) for the duration of the lockdown needs to be waived entirely. The industry body has also pointed out that the engagement contours in the post-COVID era needs to move towards a totally variable model. Such revenue-share model will ensure that the fortunes of both parties, i.e., restaurants and malls are firmly inter-linked, the statement said. "While we continue with our advocacy efforts with the Government for strong stimulus packages, NRAI is steadfast in its belief that no business will be able to sustain itself post resumption on older terms of engagement," NRAI President Anurag Katriar said. The industry cannot operate on old costs with less than half of older revenue, he added. "Therefore, I reckon that revenue share is a very fair model that will ensure that malls don't lose out if we see an unexpected early surge in business volumes," Katriar said. NRAI totally understands that the malls too have huge costs to take care of, which is not easy with reduced cash flows. Unfortunately, this is the stark reality for every business, including restaurants, he added. "Most of our members have expressed their unwillingness and inability to restart the business unless these issues get firmly and proactively resolved... I am fairly certain that as long-standing business partners of ours, the landlords will extend their support in these times of unprecedented crisis," Katriar said. New Delhi, March 31 () The National Restaurant Association of India (NRAI) on Tuesday said it aims to serve up to 10 million meals to the poor, migrants and others impacted by the lockdown due to the coronavirus outbreak. These meals cost anywhere between Rs 20 and Rs 25 per head and the financial resources for this initiative will be partially crowd-funded, NRAI said in a statement. The association plans to use the extensive infrastructure of kitchens and restaurants of its partners across the country to produce and distribute up to 10 million meals in coordination with various authorities and NGOs during the period of this lockdown, it added. "As a responsible and large industry body, we realise that our available infrastructure of kitchens, employees and storage facilities can easily be leveraged to address one of the key current concerns in India -- how to feed the underprivileged," NRAI President Anurag Katriar said. New Delhi, Apr 14 () While supporting the extended lockdown announced by the Prime Minister, the restaurant industry said it is looking at support from the government to tide over the massive crisis it is facing due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The apex industry body, the National Restaurant Association of India (NRAI), said in a statement that it wholeheartedly supports the vision of the Prime Minister to provide food to the underprivileged and daily wage earners during the current crisis. "The underlying message delivered by the Hon'ble Prime Minister in his address to the Nation earlier today was a clear indicator that human issues have to take precedence over the commercial issues under the current circumstances," NRAI President Anurag Katriar said. NRAI has already produced and served almost one and a half million meals in two weeks under its #FeedTheNeedy initiative with active crowdfunding efforts, Katriar said. "However, our industry is genuinely fighting for its mere survival and under the circumstances we are not left with any resources to pay wages to our employees despite our best intents to do so," he added. Katriar said while the NRAI supports the extended lockdown, "it has further diminished our ability and opportunity to bounce back in the post-COVID era, apart from intensifying the risk of massive job loss in the sector." Support extended lockdown, but relief measures needed for restaurant sector: NRAI

Mumbai, Mar 18 () In view of rising health risks following the spread of coronavirus, the National Restaurant Association of India on Wednesday asked all members to shut down their restaurants till March 31 or till such time when no new cases are reported. "In view of the serious health risk to employees and patrons in the food service sector amidst ever-worsening situation around COVID-19 in India, we as a responsible industry body, have sent out an advisory to all our members to shut down their restaurant operations from March 18 till March 31 or till such time when there are no new cases reported for a few days," NRAI said in its advisory. In India, the number of novel coronavirus cases has risen to 147 on Wednesday, with 10 fresh cases reported from various parts of the country, according to the Health Ministry. The advisory further stated that NRAI has been closely following the coronavirus outbreak in the country and finds an unprecedented situation where it is compelled to make some difficult decisions, which will have massive financial implications on businesses. However, "NRAI is doing this in the larger benefit for our teams, our guests and our communities," it added. "We can't forget that most of our employees use public transport to commute and they run a huge risk of getting infected and further becoming carriers of the virus. "Hence, in order to avoid any such risk, we advise all our members to shut down their operations and help curtail the spread of the deadly virus. We are also trying our best to ensure the well-being of our employees while they remain confined to their homes," it said. NRAI said the industry body will work with all its stakeholders in the ecosystem; from landlords to various departments of the government, banks and financial institutions and seek their support in mitigating losses as far as possible. "This is an extraordinary situation and beyond our control and we expect support such as converting fixed rentals to variable revenue share, allowing input tax credit on GST, moratorium on loan repayment, waiver of interest, reduction on energy costs, deferred payment of license fee and taxes will go a long way in curtailing our astronomical losses," NRAI added. NRAI urges members to shut down restaurants till Mar 31

By Abhishek Hore New Delhi, Jul 9 () The National Rifle Association of India is "encouraged" by Sports Authority of India's decision to open the Dr Karni Singh Shooting Range but the federation will take into consideration the COVID-19 situation while finalising the venue for organising its Olympic camp. Hoping for a mid-August resumption of camps for its Olympics core group after weeks of inactivity, the NRAI office-bearers have a meeting scheduled for July 15 to review the situation and explore various options. "The federation has an open mind regarding venues but this initiative of SAI is definitely encouraging and will have a strong bearing on its decisions given the obvious advantages of the Karni Singh Range," an NRAI source told . "NRAI was pre-scheduled to meet on July 15th to review and formalise its activity, resumption of camps, calendar and that remains on course." The feeling within the federation is that SAI's move will help the NRAI "plan better in drawing up its training schedule" for the core group of 34 shooters. "NRAI has taken note of the SAI release and the fact that the Karni Singh range has been now made available for Olympic bound shooters for practice and training purposes. "This will now help the NRAI plan better in drawing up its training schedule for the already identified Olympic core group," a federation insider said. Besides the national capital, some of the other options the NRAI has at the moment for conducting camps are facilities in places such as Bengaluru and Bhopal. The NRAI recently announced a core group, including the 15 Tokyo Olympics quota holders, who will be training separately for the quadrennial sporting extravaganza, scheduled to be held next summer after the COVID-19 pandemic pushed the Games back by a year. A few days later, SAI decided to allow shooters train at the Dr Karni Singh range that was shut since March due to the pandemic. In a statement earlier this week, SAI said full-intensity training of Indian shooters will start in a phased manner. As per the arrangement, shooters willing to practice individually currently are required to book online training slots to avoid crowding at the Karni Singh range, which will have the facility of thermal screening in place. Last month, Sports Minister Kiren Rijiju, in a virtual meet with representatives of various National Sports Federations (NSFs), said competitive sporting events can start without spectators from August.  Calls and texts sent to Rahul Singh from Business Insider remain unanswered. The NRAI and Zomato have been engaged in a bitter dispute over the foodtech giant’s discount programme that goes by the name ‘<keyword id="4299597" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Zomato-Gold">Zomato Gold</keyword>’. The battle has led as many as 2,000 restaurants across India to logout of the platform including those from Tier 2 cities, according to Rahul Leekha, owner of Coffee by Di Bella and a member of the NRAI. The latest salvo from Goyal seems like an attempt to split the community of restaurant owners. He shared screenshots of the gold programme launched by Beer Cafe in August itself and implied that the movement against Zomato benefited a few large chains at the expense of smaller ones. “This is not about aggregators vs restaurants; this is about the small restaurant owner vs the large restaurant owner - and we are being painted as bullies. This logout campaign as it seems now, is driven by Rahul Singh, along with the participation of a few large restaurant owners, to use the NRAI platform to sabotage aggregators and benefit themselves,” Goyal wrote in his post. The logout movement was started by the NRAI chief Singh and multiple other restaurants against the deep discounting offered by food aggregators. Zomato had then offered to change its Gold programme to restrict the usage frequency, allowing consumers to use it just once in a day, which it is planning to stick to.

Food services industry players distributed 50 lakh meals in April during lockdown: NRAI

New Delhi, March 29 () The beleaguered restaurant industry has requested landlords in the food and beverage (F&amp;B) sector for their help and support including a complete waiver of rentals and common area maintenance for three months up to June 2020 or till such time that the business lockdown on account of COVID-19 outbreak continues. "Due to the outbreak of COVID-19 and the subsequent lockdown announced by the govt, our industry is going through an unprecedented crisis that threatens our very existence. We are fighting a very grim battle for our survival and we seek your immediate support," the National Restaurant Association of India (NRAI) said in an open letter to the landlords in F&amp;B business. As long standing business partners, the restaurant industry seeks your urgent help and support in these troubled times, it added. "While this shutdown may continue for a month or two, we will take many more months post that to get back on our feet and we will not be able to sail through this period smoothly without your support," the letter said. The restaurant industry truly appreciates the fact that some of the landlords have already offered suo-moto interim support. It sincerely requests all others to join in as well in this time of need, it added. NRAI proposed interim measures to the landlords such as "a complete waiver of rentals and CAM for a period starting 15th March-2020 up to June-2020 or till such time that the business lockdown continues, whichever is later". It requested them to waive off minimum guaranteed rents for a period of six months post resumption so that businesses can eke a survival to fight another day. "We instead propose working on a pure revenue share model for a period of six months post resumption. We further propose revenue share equivalent to 50 per cent of the agreed terms with possibly a maximum cap at 10 per cent. We also request rationalising CAM during this period and levy charges at 50 per cent of the agreed rate," the letter said. The restaurant industry is seeking these reliefs just for ensuring that businesses don't die an instant death, leaving behind a trail of unfulfilled dreams, millions of lost jobs and massive unwanted litigation, it added. "..., we assure you that we are willing to walk together with you through these unprecedented challenging times with all resources at our command and we request a similar support from you," the letter said. As an industry, "our business model is such that the proportion of fixed operating expenses is very high, which is very high-risk model. Now, with the prospect of zero revenues staring at us for a substantial period of time, our fight is now a battle to retain our mere existence as commercial entities that provides jobs to millions", NRAI said in the statement. While thanking the government and RBI for their recent measures aimed at mitigating some of the woes of the industry, NRAI again requested the government to restore input tax credit on GST as it will also help significantly in bringing down the fixed operating costs. "The recent measures partially resolve our immediate concern of keeping the kitchen fires in the homes of our employees burning, which looked very difficult earlier with our negligible to limited cash reserves. Moratorium on EMI will also help millions of employees in the sector, who all have availed some loan or the other and have an EMI to honour every month. "These are very brave and laudable measures in the immediate term and we welcome them wholeheartedly. We will need a much bigger stimulus package from the govt whenever we get back to the stage of rebooting our business," NRAI President Anurag Katriar said. New Delhi, Apr 3 () Spirits maker Beam Suntory on Friday said it is partnering the National Restaurant Association of India (NRAI) to pledge support of Rs 1 crore to be used to provide relief to thousands of staff of member restaurants and their families during the lockdown period. With the lockdown of restaurants and bars across India to maintain social distancing, several thousand members of the hospitality community have been affected financially, the company said in a statement. New Delhi, Mar 12 () The National Restaurant Association of India (NRAI) on Thursday said there has been definite impact of the coronavirus outbreak on the overall food service business, with various segments being impacted in varying degrees. "Banquets is the worst-hit segment, largely due to the travel curbs and a general avoidance of people in getting into larger gathering," the NRAI said in a statement. In-restaurant dining is also seeing a big impact in the past few days, reporting an approximate business drop of 30-35 per cent, with the restaurants located within mall premises recording a sharper drop, it added. The delivery segment, so far, is seeing the least impact, the statement said. "The food service industry works on a fairly high proportion of fixed operating costs and, therefore, such sharp drop in revenues in going to cause severe losses for the businesses. If the situation doesn't improve immediately, we reckon that this will lead to business shutdown and job losses within the sector," it said. AKT HRS

The sources told IANS that only 20 brands with nearly 400 outlets have delisted from <keyword id="6358977" type="General" weightage="90" keywordseo="Swiggy" source="Orion">Swiggy</keyword> <keyword id="2199085" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="Dineout" source="Orion">Dineout</keyword>, and one of those brands even has nearly 250 dining outlets alone. According to them, restaurants like Smoke House Deli, Social, The Beer Cafe and Mamagoto have deregistered themselves from most of the online food aggregator platforms, not just Swiggy. A Swiggy spokesperson told IANS that Swiggy Dineout works with over 15,000 restaurant partners on the platform in over 20 cities and continuously engages with them to improve its offering and make this partnership viable for everyone. "Restaurant partners on Swiggy Dineout have complete liberty to decide on how much discount they wish to offer to customers through their listing on the app," the spokesperson said. "Thousands of partners continue to join us each month and list on Swiggy Dineout and only a handful of restaurant partners have expressed their desire to delist from the platform. We continue to engage with restaurant partners and NRAI representatives to revisit their choices," the food delivery platform told IANS. In online food delivery platform Swiggy in May announced it has acquired Dineout, a dining out and restaurant tech platform, for an undisclosed sum. According to sources, it was a $120 million deal. Founded in 2012 by Ankit Mehrotra, Nikhil Bakshi, Sahil Jain, and Vivek Kapoor, Dineout helps people discover the best restaurants, make table reservations, and enjoy discounts and privileges across select restaurants. NRAI has said that Dineout's deep discounting techniques disrupt the core dine-in business of the restaurants and "popularise a dangerous culture of discounting that will be irreversible". Swiggy denies exodus of high-end cafes, restaurants amid deep discounting concerns

After the Indian government made paying service charge in hotels and restaurants optional, there has been a huge cry in the hospitality sector. the <keyword id="146581" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="National-Restaurant-Association-of-India">National Restaurant Association of India</keyword> (<keyword id="92417" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="NRAI">NRAI</keyword>) is clearly not happy with the Centre’s ruling and has cited judicial precedent against making service charge optional. 
 
The NRAI stated customers are free not to eat at a restaurant, if they do not wish to pay the service charge. 
 
NRAI, which represents independent restaurants and chains, said levying service charge was a "common and accepted practice" that was "recognised as such" by various government departments. 
 The government had clarified earlier in <keyword id="6354721" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="parliament">Parliament</keyword> that the authorities could act against those levying a service charge without the knowledge and consent of consumers on charges of indulging in "unfair trade practices". 
 
In a statement issued by the Union consumer affairs ministry it had asked states to ensure hotels and restaurants displayed information that service charge was optional on their premises. The ministry also made it clear that this was being done as it had received many complaints from customers who said they were being forced to pay service charge, in lieu of tips, of anything between 5% and 20% "irrespective of the kind of service provided". 
 The ministry said the <keyword id="407235" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Hotel-Association-of-India">Hotel Association of India</keyword>, when asked for clarification, replied that a "service charge is completely discretionary" and a customer could have it waived. 
 Defending the levying of service charge, NRAI president <keyword id="366474" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Riyaaz-Amlani">Riyaaz Amlani</keyword> said that restaurants clearly follow the very same Consumer Protection Act that is being used to justify the move to penalise those who levy it without the consent of consumers. 
 
"The act stops us from indulging in any unfair method or deceptive practice. We clearly mention the service charge we levy on our menus. We are not indulging in any unfair trade practice. This is all part of a bill on which the restaurants pay VAT while the employees pay income tax. It also does away with cash tips," he told TOI. 
 Other restraint owner feels that the <keyword id="184317" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Department-of-Consumer-Affairs">Department of Consumer Affairs</keyword> should have waived the charge instead of leaving matters "ambiguous". 
 
"The diner might say the entire meal was nice but the salad was bad. What are we supposed to do in such a scenario? Most complaints we receive are about higher taxes and not service charge. The government didn't waive taxes but waived service charge that diners happily paid," he told TOI. 
 
However most food entrepreneurs believe, this move by the government wouldn't affect the QSR chains much.

"We never charged a 10% charge to our customers in the first place. It's mostly casual dining cafes, fine dining restaurants and places that serve liquor that'll come under the ambit of consumers questioning why we should pay a mandatory 10% tip when the service isn't upto the mark." 
 
Ashish Tulsian, founder of POSist, a point of sale terminal company for restaurants : 
"This move may affect businesses of restaurants for a shorter period of time. Customers will get benefited as they would have a clarity on charges. For example, biryani costing Rs 200 becomes Rs 290 after taxes. Customers will understand clearly know how the calculation has been made. Though initially the restaurants will decide to hike the prices but in the long run, customers will gain." 
 
Sumit Gulati, Gulati Spice Market: 
"We already had a customer today who came in and declared that he won't pay service charge. Without even experiencing the service, he declined. We need to understand that the intent of the decision is good and for the benefit of the client. However, Delhi is known for its notorious behaviour. The whole reason why service charge came into being is because average people here have poor tipping nature."

Hit by the coronavirus crisis and the nation-wide lockdown, the National Restaurant Association of India (NRAI) has urged landlords in the food and beverage (F&amp;B) or restaurant industry to waive their rents and the common area maintenance charges till June or till the lockdown lasts. In an open letter to the landlords in the food and beverage (F&amp;B) business, the industry body representing over 5 lakh restaurants said that although the shutdown may remain for a month two, the industry will take many more months to revive. "While this shutdown may continue for a month or two, we will take many more months post that to get back on our feeta and we will not be able to sail through this period smoothly without your support," said the letter NRAI also sought that the common area maintenance charge should be taken at 50 per cent of the agreed rate for the six months after the lockdown ends. It also said that there should not be "minimum guaranteed rents for six months post that and instead work on a pure revenue share equivalent to 50 per cent of the agreed terms up to a maximum of 10 per cent of monthly revenues." NRAI President Anurag Katriar said: "This appeal is aimed at ensuring our mere survival during such extraordinarily troubled times. We aren't trying to be profiteer at the expense of the landlords. As long-standing business partners of ours, we are hopeful that the landlords will extend their support in these times of unprecedented crisis." The industry body, last week wrote to the Finance Minister seeking economic relief for the restaurant industry in view of the disruption caused by the coronavirus scare in the country. Acknowledging the recent relief measures by the government including the deferment of GST return filings, he said that the sector would require a larger stimulus package to revive the sector and support its over 70 lakh employees. "We will need a much bigger stimulus package from the government whenever we get back to the stage of rebooting our business," he said.
