Dr A. P. J. Abdul Kalam wasn’t just any scientist; he was the driving force behind some of the most critical advancements in India's defense technology, earning him the well-deserved nickname, “Missile Man of India.” But how did a humble son of a boat owner from Tamil Nadu rise to revolutionise India’s missile capabilities?<br /><br />It all began when he joined the <keyword id="19896088" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Defence-Research-and-Development-Organisation" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Defence Research and Development Organisation" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="Defence Research and Development Organisation">Defence Research and Development Organisation</keyword> (DRDO) and later the <keyword id="19915130" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-Space-Research-Organisation" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Indian Space Research Organisation" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="Indian Space Research Organisation">Indian Space Research Organisation</keyword> (ISRO). It was here that Kalam's deep understanding of rocketry and aerospace engineering began to take shape. His work with India’s first satellite launch vehicle, the SLV-III, laid the foundation for his transition into missile development.<br /><br />Kalam's pivotal role in leading the <keyword id="23558683" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Integrated-Guided-Missile-Development-Program" source="keywords">Integrated Guided Missile Development Program</keyword> (IGMDP) is where he truly made history. This program was responsible for the creation of several of India’s most powerful missiles — some of which are still considered game-changers in the defense world today. Under his leadership, India’s missile defense strategy went from practically nonexistent to highly capable, establishing the country as a force to be reckoned with.<br /><h2><keyword id="22799891" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Agni-missiles" source="keywords">Agni missiles</keyword></h2>Among his most notable creations is the Agni series. Considered the big leagues in the world of short to medium range ballistic missiles, the first within its series was developed after the Indo-Pakistan Kargil war. The Agni I, for example, has a range of about 700 to 1,200 kilometers. That’s comparable to firing a missile from Mumbai and hitting targets well into Pakistan. The real kicker? It can carry a 2,500 kg nuclear warhead, what India has affectionately termed a “credible deterrent”.<br /><br />The weight of the warhead directly correlates to the missile's destructive potential. A heavier warhead usually contains more explosive material or larger payloads, which increases its ability to cause widespread damage. This is particularly important for missiles like the Agni series, where the intent is to act as a deterrent.<br />    <div type="Article" hostid="261" msid="114227840" title="As a warning, China sent warplanes and warships, including its first aircraft carrier, to practice assaulting Taiwan" mstype="2" mssubtype="0"></div>Building upon the success of the first iteration, the Agni II boasted an even more impressive range of 2,000 to 3,000 kilometers. This nuclear-equipped missile was capable, fast, terrifyingly accurate, and likely helped significantly affect the strategic dynamics of India with neighbouring countries such as China. With a warhead of 1000kg, it was deadly — if needed to be. Both of these missiles are rail and road-mobile, meaning that they can be transported across the country for launch.<br /><h2>Prithvi close-range missiles</h2>But it wasn't just long-range nukes that Kalam worked on. He also turned his attention to tactical, battlefield missiles like the Prithvi series. The <keyword id="23558684" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Prithvi-missiles" source="keywords">Prithvi missiles</keyword> are somewhat different — they're designed for close-range engagements, acting almost like a heavyweight punch in a tactical fight. The Prithvi I can travel 150 kilometers and is perfect for battlefield dominance, carrying a huge 1,000-kilogram payload. That’s the equivalent of launching an entire small car into enemy territory at speeds of Mach 2.<br /><br />Meanwhile, the Prithvi II, with its slightly extended range of 250 kilometers, helped provide additional flexibility to the Indian Air Force. These missiles might not have the range of the Agni series, but they hit hard and fast — similar to the Russian Iskander missile system in terms of their tactical role on the battlefield.<br /><h2>Akash SAM</h2>The <keyword id="23558685" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Akash-missiles" source="keywords">Akash missiles</keyword> are a surface-to-air missile (SAM) that operates like a protective umbrella for India’s skies. This missile can engage multiple targets at once and hit them from 25 kilometers away, and was made agile enough to shoot down incoming enemy planes, helicopters, or even drones. So far, the Indian forces have built over 3,500 of them.<br />    <div type="Article" hostid="261" msid="111540369" title="Israel is inching toward a wider war and a nasty fight against an enemy poised to bombard it as no other foe has" mstype="2" mssubtype="0"></div>While some compare the Akash missiles to Israel’s Iron Dome system, there are some notable differences. Both systems are designed to neutralise aerial threats before they can hit their targets, but their primary roles differ slightly. The Iron Dome is specifically optimised for intercepting short-range rockets and artillery shells, with a success rate that has exceeded 90% in combat situations. Many compare it akin to a highly responsive shield that reacts quickly to immediate missile threats, particularly in urban areas.<br /><br />In contrast, while the Akash missile also intercepts aerial threats, it focuses more on engaging enemy aircraft, drones, and cruise missiles. The Akash's strength lies in its ability to handle multiple threats simultaneously with a rapid response time, similar to the Iron Dome, but with a broader focus on a variety of high-speed airborne targets rather than just short-range rockets.<br /><h2>Nag anti-tank missiles</h2>One of the more specialised missiles Dr. Kalam worked on was the Nag, designed for taking out tanks. Its fire-and-forget technology locks onto an armored tank, flies up, and dives down to strike the tank’s weakest spot from above, punching through even the most advanced armor.<br />    <div type="Article" hostid="261" msid="114151124" title="Getting more F-16s is only half the battle. When compared to international anti-tank guided missiles (ATGMs), such as the US's Javelin or Israel’s Spike, the Nag is just as deadly — albeit with a shorter range — providing India with a cutting-edge weapon for modern warfare. However, the Nag's specific design for India’s diverse battlefield conditions, including its deployment on the NAMICA (<keyword id="23558686" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Nag-missile" source="keywords">Nag Missile</keyword> Carrier), provides it with excellent mobility and flexibility, especially in rough terrains.<br /><br />Dr. Kalam’s genius lay not just in the missiles he helped develop, but in his strategic vision. Today, India stands as one of the few nations with highly capable, indigenously developed missile technology, largely thanks to Kalam’s contributions.<br />

The Republic Day Parade at <keyword id="20013938" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="kartavya-path" source="keywords">Kartavya Path</keyword> here on Friday, which began with the proud winners of the highest gallantry awards, including Param Vir Chakra winners, showcased India's top weapons' system -- Tank T-90 Bhishma, NAG Missile System, Infantry Combat Vehicle, All-Terrain Vehicle, Pinaka, Weapon Locating Radar System 'Swathi', Sarvatra Mobile Bridging System, Drone Jammer System, and Medium Range Surface-to-Air Missile System among others.<br /><br />The first Army contingent leading the Mechanised Column was of 61 Cavalry, led by Major <keyword id="20341339" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="yashdeep-ahlawat" source="keywords">Yashdeep Ahlawat</keyword>. Raised in 1953, the 61 Cavalry is the only serving active Horsed Cavalry Regiment in the world, with the amalgamation of all the 'State Horsed Cavalry Units'.<br /><br />It was followed by 11 Mechanised Columns, 12 marching contingents, and a flypast by Advanced Light Helicopters of Army Aviation Corps.<br /><br />Marching down the Kartavya Path for the first time was an all-women Tri-Service contingent, led by Captain Sandhya of Military Police, with three supernumerary officers Captain Sharanya Rao, Sub Lieutenant Anshu Yadav and Flight Lieutenant <keyword id="20341436" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="shrishti-rao" source="keywords">Shrishti Rao</keyword>, and an all-women Armed Forces Medical Services contingent, headed by Major <keyword id="20341435" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="srishti-khullar" source="keywords">Srishti Khullar</keyword> with Captain Amba Samant of Army Dental Corps, Surgeon Lieutenant Kanchana of Indian Navy and Flight Lieutenant Dhivya Priya of Indian Air Force.<br /><br />The Army Marching Contingents included The Madras Regiment, The Grenadiers, Rajputana Rifles, Sikh Regiment and the Kumaon Regiment.<br /><br />The Indian Navy contingent consisted of 144 men and women Agniveers, led by Lt Prajwal M as Contingent Commander and Lt Mudita Goyal, Lt Sharvani Supreiya and Lt Devika H. as Platoon Commanders.<br /><br />It was followed by the Naval Tableau, depicting the themes 'Nari Shakti' and 'Sea Power Across the Oceans Through Indigenisation'.<br /><br />The first part of the tableau showcased the women in the Indian Navy in All Roles and in All Ranks across the Navy while the second depicted the very first indigenous Carrier Battle Group, comprising the Aircraft Carrier Vikrant, her highly capable escort ships Delhi, Kolkata and Shivalik, the Light Combat Aircraft and Advanced Light Helicopter, the Kalvari Class Submarine and the GSAT-7, Rukmani Satellite.<br /><br />The Indian Air Force (IAF) comprised 144 airmen and four officers, led by Squadron Leader Rashmi Thakur. Squadron Leaders <keyword id="20341434" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="sumita-yadav" source="keywords">Sumita Yadav</keyword> and Pratiti Ahluwalia and Flight Lieutenant Kirti Rohil did the march past as supernumerary officers behind the Contingent Commander. The IAF tableau is on the theme 'Bharatiya Vayu Sena: Saksham, Sashakt, Aatmanirbhar'.<br /><br />The tableau depicted LCA Tejas and Su-30 flying over the IOR, and a C-295 transport aircraft being flown by women aircrew in the cockpit. The GSAT- 7A positioned on the tableau represents the IAF's incorporation of space technology in its operations. The tableau showed that IAF has been at the forefront of rendering humanitarian aid, both within and across borders.<br /><br />Another highlight of the parade was the Veterans' Tableau on the theme 'Rashtra Nirmaan: Pehle Bhi, Ab Bhi, Aage Bhi aur Hamesha'. T-90 Bhishma, NAG Missile, Surface-to-Air Missile, drone jammer displayed at Kartavya Path

India successfully carried out the final trial of <keyword id="1636608" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="anti-tank-guided-missile">anti-tank guided missile</keyword> -- Nag -- on Thursday. The missile will be inducted soon in the India Army. In 2008, Ministry of Defence approved procurement of 300 Nag missiles and 25 missile carriers for Army.<br /><br />The test was carried out at 6.45 a.m. at the Pokhran field firing ranges in Rajasthan, Defence Research and Development Organisation (<keyword id="6355142" type="DEFINITION" weightage="20" keywordseo="DRDO">DRDO</keyword>) said.<br /><br />The missile was integrated with the actual warhead and a tank target was kept at designated range. This was launched from <keyword id="794819" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Nag-missile">Nag Missile</keyword> Carrier NAMICA.<br /><br />The missile hit the target accurately defeating the armour.<br /><br />Anti-tank guided missile has been developed by DRDO to engage highly fortified enemy tanks in day and night conditions.<br /><br />The missile has "Fire &amp; Forget" "Top Attack" capabilities with passive homing guidance to defeat all main battle tanks equipped with composite and reactive armour.<br /><br />The NAG missile carrier NAMICA is an Infantry Combat Vehicle BMP2 II based system with amphibious capability. With this final user trial, NAG will enter into production phase.<br /><br />The missile will be produced by Defence PSU Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL), whereas Ordinance Factory Medak will produce the NAMICA.<br /><br />Defence Rajnath Singh congratulated DRDO and Indian Army for the successful trial of NAG Missile.<br /><br />Chairman DRDO, G. India's anti-tank guided missile NAG completes final test — will soon be inducted into the Indian Army

Indian Army invokes emergency powers to buy Israel’s fire-and-forget anti-tank missiles

The US Navy's best sub-hunting aircraft is facing some nagging problems

New Delhi, The three wings of the armed forces on Friday showcased India's rising military might here with an impressive display of assets as their Republic Day tableaux complemented the over-arching theme of '<keyword id="19911646" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="nari-shakti" source="keywords">Nari Shakti</keyword>' and 'Atmanirbharta'. Highlighting India's growing prowess in shipbuilding, the Indian <keyword id="19905067" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="navy" source="keywords">Navy</keyword> tableau depicted the imposing indigenously built aircraft carrier INS Vikrant and highly capable escort ships INS Delhi, INS Kolkata and INS Shivalik, the LCA, the ALH and the Kalvari-class submarine. <br /><br />The Navy tableau's theme was 'Nari Shakti' and 'Atmanirbharta'. <br /><br />The recent announcement of the Navy welcoming women in all roles and ranks is indeed a "shining symbol of progressive India", read the description about the tableau in an official booklet on the 75th Republic Day celebrations. <br /><br />The naval band played 'Hum Taiyyar Hain', representing the force's might and combat readiness, and to its tune, marched a naval contingent of 144 young sailors, both male and female Agniveers. <br /><br />The Indian Air Force (<keyword id="19900590" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="iaf" source="keywords">IAF</keyword>) contingent comprised 144 airmen and four officers and was led by Squadron Leader Rashmi Thakur. <br /><br />Squadron leaders Sumita Yadav and Pratiti Ahluwalia and Flight Lieutenant Kirti Rohil marched along as supernumerary officers behind the contingent commander. <br /><br />The Air Force band, comprising three drum majors and 72 musicians, played 'Sound Barrier Quick March'. <br /><br />The IAF tableau depicted its overall theme of 'Bharatiya Vayu Dena: Saksham, Sashakt, Atmanirbhar' or 'Indian Air Force: Potent, Powerful and Self-reliant'. <br /><br />The frontage showed a symbolic representation of a C-295 transport aircraft being flown by two women aircrew in the cockpit. <br /><br />The presence of IAF GARUD commandos also signifies the enhancement of IAF's combat capabilities both in the air as well as on the ground, read the description about the tableau. <br /><br />The middle portion of the IAF tableau depicted an IAF Tejas and a Su-30 aircraft flying over the Indian Ocean Region, signifying the ever-expanding reach of the IAF -- over land, as well as over the sea. <br /><br />The rear portion of this float depicts humanitarian assistance rendered by the IAF, both within and across borders. <br /><br />French President <keyword id="19912191" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="emmanuel-macron" source="keywords">Emmanuel Macron</keyword> is the chief guest at the grand celebrations, which has an overarching theme of projecting the nation's women power and democratic values. <br /><br />The armed forces displayed an array of home-grown weaponry and military equipment such as missiles, drone jammers, surveillance systems, vehicle-mounted mortars and BMP-II infantry combat vehicles at the parade. <br /><br />For the first time, an all-women tri-services contingent took part in the country's biggest ceremonial event. <br /><br />In another historic first, Lieutenants Deepti Rana and Priyanka Sevda, who are among 10 women officers commissioned into the Regiment of Artillery for the first time last year, led the 'Swathi' weapon locating radar and Pinaka rocket system at the parade on Kartavya Path. <br /><br />Tank T-90 Bhishma, NAG missile system, infantry combat vehicle, all-terrain vehicle, weapon locating radar system 'Swathi', drone jammer system, and medium range surface-to-air missile were among the key displays by the mechanised columns of the Army. <br /><br />The first Indian Army contingent leading the Mechanised Column was of the 61 Cavalry led by Major <keyword id="20341339" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="yashdeep-ahlawat" source="keywords">Yashdeep Ahlawat</keyword>. 'Nari Shakti', 'Atmanirbharta' themes ring in tableaux of IAF, Navy

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Tesla's Cybertruck doesn't appear as "apocalypse-proof" as Elon Musk first suggested.</li><li>Since its November debut, the vehicles have gotten stuck in rough terrain and are facing recalls.</li></ul><p>Tesla's Cybertruck hasn't had quite the debut <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/elon-musk">Elon Musk</a> said it would.</p><p>Since its November launch, the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tesla-truck-cybertruck">$60,000+ vehicle</a><strong> </strong>has repeatedly made headlines for issues including displaying inexplicable "<a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/cybertruck-owners-report-critical-steering-error-red-screen-alerts-2024-4">critical steering error</a>" warning alerts, becoming stuck in rough terrain, and facing widespread recalls — a far cry from being the "<a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/cybertruck-engineer-asks-owners-stop-damage-tests-2024-3">apocalypse-proof</a>" behemoth it was touted as.</p><p>"If you're ever in an argument with another car," Elon Musk pledged at the truck's <a target="_blank" rel="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tesla-cybertruck-price-release-event-delivery-truck-live-updates-2023-11"><u>launch event</u></a> last year, "you will win."</p><p>He added: "The apocalypse could come along at any moment, and here at Tesla, we have <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/elon-musk-tesla-cybertruck-apocalypse-inequality-2023-12">the finest in apocalypse technology</a>."</p><p>But on May 2, a tourist on Nantucket found their Cybertruck trapped in the sand, requiring a tow truck to free it. According to the tow operator, the driver made one crucial error: He forgot to let<strong> </strong>air out of the tires.</p><p>Normally, Cybertruck tires are inflated to around 50 psi. In the Cybertruck owner's manual, though, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tesla">Tesla</a> warns drivers to lower tire pressure before off-roading, to increase traction and decrease the risk of punctures. The tow operator said the safe spot for beach driving is between 18 and 22 psi.</p><p class="p1">"Unfortunately, they had neglected to do that or did not know to do that," the tow operator, who asked to remain anonymous because he runs his one-man towing operation informally, told Business Insider. "So that set them three steps back, right from the word go."</p><p class="p1">The operator said most tow jobs like these stem from inexperience, adding that he's often called in the summer months to help tourists who've misjudged how soft the sand is near the coastline or were completely unaware of how tire pressure impacts a vehicle's off-roading capabilities.</p><p class="p1">What happened with the Cybertruck, the operator said, could have happened to any other pickup driver. He noted, though, that the Cybertruck's extra weight — about 1,000 lbs heavier than comparable gas-powered pickups — didn't help.</p><p class="p1">"There's always been a question as to how electric vehicles with the excess weight will handle beach driving," he said. "They'll wear the same size tires as a regular F-150 or, you know, insert your standard pickup truck here, but they will have a higher weight."</p><p class="p1">The all-electric pickup was eventually freed — though not before it attracted a crowd of bemused onlookers from the small island community.</p><p class="p1">The tow operator said he "wasn't all that" surprised to get the phone call, given the buzz surrounding the arrival of the first Cybertruck on the island "earlier that day."</p><p>"He immediately gets off the boat and then parks in the heart of town on a crosswalk," he said. "It sort of made the internet rounds — and then, by 5 o'clock, it was stuck on the beach."</p><p>"We were joking [that] we sort of applaud his ability to really check off all of the things not to do on Nantucket in very quick succession," he added. "Really made the most out of the day."</p><p class="p1">The incident went viral on social media as only the latest blunder involving the Cybertruck.</p><h2><strong>Cybertruck's problems aren't all user error</strong></h2><p class="p1">As in the Nantucket incident, the 6,600+ lb. vehicles have also been seen <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/cybertruck-tesla-stuck-snow-video-driver-error-ford-viral-2023-12">stuck in the snow</a> and <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tesla-cybertruck-offroading-videos-struggling-climb-steep-hill-2023-11">struggling to climb steep hills</a>. While the official causes of these incidents remain unconfirmed, the Cybertruck's problems can't all be chalked up to user error.</p><p>The cars, touted by Tesla as bulletproof, have also struggled with <a target="_blank" rel="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/youtuber-ditched-tesla-for-mercedes-eqs-ev-quality-issues-design-2023-5"><u>nagging quality issues</u></a>. The stainless steel body is prone to complaints of <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/cybertruck-upkeep-barkeepers-friend-tesla-fanatics-2024-3">rust spots</a> and <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/cybertruck-upkeep-barkeepers-friend-tesla-fanatics-2024-3">collecting handprints</a>, and the massive vehicles have unsightly gaps in the door panels that YouTube tech influencer Marques Brownlee described as "<a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/elon-musk-responds-mkbhd-tesla-cybertruck-door-panel-gap-2024-3">worst I've ever seen in a production vehicle</a>." </p><p>Another YouTuber reported their finger got <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/youtuber-cybertrunk-finger-test-frunk-sensor-2024-5">caught in the car's frunk</a> after its sensor failed to detect the obstruction, leaving a dent and small cut on the skin despite a recent software update intended to prevent such issues.</p><p>Firsthand accounts of the Cybertruck's accelerator pedal getting <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tesla-cybertruck-accelerator-pedal-recall-fix-includes-drilling-hole-2024-04">stuck at full throttle</a> also attracted regulators' attention, with the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reporting concerns that an "<a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tesla-recalls-cybertrucks-accelerator-fault-pad-pedal-electric-vehicle-truck-2024-4">unapproved change</a>" during the production process likely caused the problem, increasing the risk of collision. The NHTSA report prompted Tesla to recall about 3,878 of the vehicles in April voluntarily, which impacted virtually every Cybertruck that had been shipped to customers since the launch.</p><p>Business Insider previously reported that due to its size, speed, and autopilot features, <span>Michael Brooks, the executive director of the Center for Auto Safety, </span>called the Cybertruck a "guideless missile" and <span>Myles Russell, a Canadian civil engineering technologist, called it </span>a "<a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tesla-cybertruck-safety-guideless-missile-experts-say-2023-12">death machine.</a>" </p><p>Problems with the tank-like car aren't limited to production models. When the prototype Cybertruck was first displayed in 2019, early demonstrations of its "shatterproof" glass were thwarted when the car's windows were <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/video-tesla-cybertruck-launch-blooper-armour-windows-smashed-oops-2019-11">easily smashed</a> in a live test.</p><p>Musk warned investors last October during an <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/elon-musk-says-cybertruck-faces-enormous-production-challenges-tesla-2023-10">earnings call</a> that the car's unique design created massive problems with scaling production, saying: "We dug our own grave with the Cybertruck."</p><p>And with Tesla's stock down nearly 25% since the Cybertruck debuted last year — from $241.20 to $181.14 per share — it's possible he could be right.</p><p>Representatives for Tesla did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Business Insider.</p>

Tesla's 'apocalypse-proof' Cybertruck thwarted by sand, snow, and regulator recalls

The export version of the missile can reach just under 400 kilometers, or roughly 250 miles. That ship hit a storm in the English Channel and returned to port.</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Russian state media outlet <a href="http://tass.com/defense/985944" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Tass said</a> in January 2019 that "part of the equipment included in the first shipment" to China had been "damaged by a storm and returned to Russia."</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Around the same time, Russian <keyword id="6355005" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="news">news</keyword> agency RIA quoted the <span>spokeswoman for Russia's military and technical cooperation service</span> as saying parts of the S-400 systems on their way to China were damaged in a storm at sea. "I can't really think of something like this ever happening before, because it's not just any missile. She now has a little advice for women. Here is a gadget checklist she wants every woman to have. 1. <strong>A magnifying glass with a built-in laser:</strong> Using the same technology as Putin’s S-400 missiles, it will let you spot, target and destroy stray strands of hair that have the audacity to sprout overnight on your chin or upper lip. A zap a day keeps the razor away.<br />

2. <strong>A vibrating alarm in our sanitary napkins: </strong>Alright, maybe not vibrating ’cause that would set us off on another path, but an alarm that syncs with our smartphone to warn us of ‘Imminent Overflow’, thus saving us the hundred trips we make to the bathroom ‘just to check’.<br />

3. <strong>An implanted microchip:</strong> When desired, it will stop the frenzied stream of thoughts washing across our brain and mimic the ability of the XY chromosome- holders who can stare into blank space and actually think about nothing. Not the kind of nothing in which you wonder, ‘Should I exchange that dress I got from Zara, from medium to small? Because I should be able to lose 5 kilos by next weekend or maybe I’d better wear it now before everyone goes and buys it. So how many calories did I eat for lunch, let me count …’ Not that sort of nothing, I mean actually nothing — zero brainwave activity aside from regulating vital functions.<br />

4. <strong>High heels with a button: </strong>So they turn into flats when required, like across gravelly paths and long hotel corridors. With another tap, the heel slides out again so you can glide into the party with your legs looking five inches longer as desired, throwing away the no-pain, no-gain adage, along with bunions and swollen ankles.<br />

5. <strong>A weighing machine that can lie: </strong>Not big dramatic lies where you wonder if you have left Earth and are now under the moon’s gravitational pull; just small white lies, like a kilo or two here and there.<br />

6. <strong>A drone trained to spy on your mother-in-law:</strong> It sets off multiple alerts each time she is on her way to your house so that you can make a quick exit and be saved from spouting endless variations of, ‘Yes, you are right Mummyji’ while cowering with fear at what she will find fault with next.<br />

7. <strong>A pair of cyborg arms to attach to your own two flesh-and-blood ones:</strong> An absolute must for the three hours that you have in the evening, after coming back from work and before going to bed. With this invention, multitasking would be a breeze — draw a diagram for your daughter’s project, throw some marinated chicken into the oven, make the husband’s favorite gin and tonic which apparently doesn’t taste the same when he makes it himself, and slather on the heavily advertised de-wrinkling face pack that will make you look 10 years younger in 10 minutes. After a while, you may wonder how you even did it all earlier with just two arms.<br />

8. <strong>A camera with an inbuilt projector embedded in the retina:</strong> To be used on men with convenient amnesia whenever they say that they have absolutely no recollection of agreeing to a particular thing. This blanket statement covers everything from taking the dog to the vet, visiting our second cousin Chunna and going to see a play called Vagina Monologues. Just turn your steely gaze to a blank wall and replay that particular recorded incident with the date and time as irrevocable proof.<br />
<br />
9. <strong>A pen with inbuilt darts:</strong> Handy when men talk over you, drowning out your views, or down to you, like you are an imbecile. Point the pen and a tiny tranquilizer dart discretely flies out across the conference table and sticks them in the neck causing an immediate allergic reaction with itchy hives at which point you can always smile sweetly and say, ‘You know that looks like a nasty autoimmune disorder, are you sure you are not allergic to your own bullshit?’<br />
<br />
10.<strong> A chill pill:</strong> As I sat alone to write this piece, I heard the old clamouring in my head, telling me that I should spend this time reading a book to the baby, checking on my son’s homework or looking into the man of the house’s dinner, and that I can get back to my task once they don’t need me and have gone to bed.<br />
<br />
"And I realized that while all the other gadgets and inventions would be wonderful what we first need is something that cures guilt. We are so busy being mothers, daughters, sisters, and wives that the time we spend on ourselves, on our work, is laced with self-reproach. So, I propose a pill made in the laboratory of our minds that gets rid of that nagging voice in the head caused by years of conditioning. Twinkle Khanna's list of 10 gadgets for every woman will leave you in awe of her completely

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>One of the cool things about writing about cars for a living is that you get to experience a lot of very different vehicles, often within a few days of each other.</p><p>This can be good. But it can also create some issues.</p><p>I recently drove a Jaguar F-Type R with all-wheel-drive and a BMW M235i, more or less back to back.</p><p>But I didn't drive the F-Type on the street. I drove it at the Monticello Motor Club in upstate New York, on a track, while wearing a helmet. I drove it very fast. And not particularly well, but still.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div><span style="line-height: 1.5em;"></span></p><p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">The BMW was driven mainly on the Saw Mill Parkway, north of New York City, and in suburban New Jersey, just across the Hudson River from Manhattan. No helmet, but I did break out the driving gloves.</span></p><p>This is by no means a fair way to compare the two cars. <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/jaguar-f-type-r-coupe-review-2014-10">Business Insider's Ben Zhang checked out the F-Type</a> (a slightly different version) last year and was blown away. We didn't name it our Car of the Year - <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/chevrolet-corvette-stingray-business-insider-car-of-the-year-2014-12">that honor went to the Corvette Stingray</a> - but the voting was close. The Jag I drove had a supercharged, 550-horsepower engine. Sticker price: $104,000, which is actually a bargain for a car of such stupendous power and performance.</p><p>The BMW, meanwhile, had a 320-horsepower, turbo-charged inline 6-cylinder engine. And no AWD. It costs $43,000.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>About the only thing these two cars have in common is that they both have two doors. </p><p>They certainly don't have in common my love or affection. I was grateful that Jaguar allowed us to enjoy some track time with what is, in many respects, a road-going race car. But as stunning as the F-Type R is when you let it run free, the car left me with nagging impression that I just didn't like it all that much. </p><p>It took about two days of thinking about this to figure out what was bugging me.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>It's that the car is pretentious. The car the F-Type is supposed to evoke is the legendary Jaguar E-Type, regarded by many as the most beautiful car of all time. The E-Type is special: the car is all sleek curves, and not one of them is out of place. It looks like it was drawn up by the Almighty and carved by Da Vinci. For my money, it's the only car ever built that deserves to be called a work of art. </p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>F comes after E, so the F-Type was conceived to be a modern-day version of the E-Type. It certainly has presence. But that presence is loud. The E-Type whispered. The F-Type roars. </p><p>Not that the Jag can be entirely blamed for being pretentious. There's an arms race afoot in the luxury sports-car market to present oodles of power and potency in a strutting, self-confident package. Jag needs to keep up and would clearly fret if it couldn't.</p><p>For what it's worth, the M235i is also a product of history - specifically, the smaller BMWs of the early 1980s through the early 1990s. These were versatile, relatively luxurious sport coupes that were (and still are) flat-out a blast to drive, particularly the high-performance M3. The M235i isn't actually an "M" version of the current 2 Series (M is BMW's performance division). So although it <em>isn't</em> an M2, it is a much snazzier version of the base 2 Series coupe. (Also, BMW hasn't held back on the M badging, so confusion is understandable.)</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>This is not a pretentious car. But it is the best way in the world to turn a half a tank of gas into acceleration and handling over the course of a few hours. It weighs in at 3,400 lbs. - only about 200 less than the Jag. So while the F-Type is objectively much faster - 0-60 mph in 3.8 second versus the Bimmer's 4.4 - the BMW <em>feels </em>quicker. </p><p>Mind you, the BMW isn't burdened with the same aesthetic legacy as the F-Type. It looks sharp, but adding a few angles, swoops, and a pair of raptor-like headlights is enough to greatly amplify the utilitarian impression made by the M235i's '80s ancestors.</p><p>This is all a deeply subjective assessment. Some of it can be blamed on the Jag's personality, which is literally full of sound and fury. The exhaust bellows like a beautifully dressed, overmuscled Englishman who just took a few grand off the house at a craps table in Vegas.</p><p>The M235i exudes synthesized motor sounds that are a cheerful tenor to the Jag's boastful baritone (the engine and exhaust noises, due to technology not as lively on its own as BMW's engineers would like, are sonically augmented and piped through the car's stereo speakers).</p><p>Driving this dashing little thing isn't exactly the most viscerally satisfying experience I've ever had behind the wheel - that honor would go to my 1997 Mazda Miata, in particular in November 2005 when I had to get my laboring wife to the hospital, a run from Pasadena to Los Angeles as the sun was setting so we could ultimately welcome our now car-crazy son, James, into the world - but the experience was still <em>quite visceral. </em></p><p>I opened the sunroof and rolled the windows down and put it in Sport+ mode and worked the paddle shifters in automanual mode to have loads of fun with 3rd, 4th, and 5th gears. For the record, this is what it feels like to drive a Sidewinder missile. And also for the record, BMW has done such a fine job with the transmission that you can use the paddles or go semi-old-school with the shifter and experience a passable imitation of handling a stick.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>The car isn't without a few drawbacks, starting with the need to commit to a modest passenger load. It's a 2+2 - two seats in the front, two in the rear. I could smash my family of five into my old Saab 900S. No dice with the BMW. I'm also still not much of a fan of BMW's iDrive system, and for the most part, the infotainment setup in the M235i compares unfavorably with what you can get in a Chevy Trax.</p><p>On the plus side, the age-old BMW problem, that the "ultimate driving machine" is built around the driver, with everyone else in the relegated to afterthought status, has been solved, somewhat. My wife has ridden shotgun in countless cars at this point and she now holds the 235i in high esteem.</p><p>And for the driver, the "cockpit" nature of his side of the car is as dandy as ever. The moderately bolstered, highly adjustable seat, the wonderful feel of both the steering wheel and the steering itself, the clean analog instruments complemented by various low-key digital screens - this is a comfortable car to drive fast or slow, to both cruise in and corner hard with confidence.</p><p>You can effectively switch your passion for driving on and off with the M235i. When you find yourself on the right road at the right time, it's ready to go. </p><p>Now back to the F-Type. This is the kind of car that incessantly reminds you that its large and in charge. It wears absolutely nothing lightly. For many, this would be a welcome burden: Look at me! Look me! Hear me! Hear me! </p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>I don't begrudge anyone that, but for me, it replaces the basic joy of driving with something else. You are, to a degree, a celebrity in an F-Type - moreso in the F-Type R. In the the M235i, you are just someone with a great car that can do cool things. The smiles will come unexpectedly - you'll catch yourself in a grin. With the Jag, you'll demand it.</p><p>As I already said, not a fair comparison. Subjective as hell.<span style="line-height: 1.5em;"> But when you drive a lot of cars, you need to figure out what you <em>genuinely</em> like. There is that which impresses. And there is that which makes a connection. </span></p><p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">In the M235i, you merge with the machine.
