OP Jindal Global University ties up with 288 varsities in G20 nations

<ul><li>Blame game begins between University’s management and <keyword id="6409110" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="sodexo" source="Orion">Sodexo</keyword>, the food service provider on campus.</li><li>Students say this is not a stray incident and that several other incidents have fallen on deaf ears in the past. Kitchen only area which does not have CCTV cameras.</li><li>Students refuse to eat at the canteen despite Sodexo’s claims that it has cleaned up its act and the kitchen. </li></ul> Students at India’s prestigious OP Jindal Global University are up in arms against the management after a video went viral on Tuesday that shows a member of the kitchen staff using his feet to crush cooked potatoes. To register their protest against the management students have stopped eating at the mess on campus because of poor <keyword id="6387522" type="General" weightage="40" keywordseo="hygiene" source="Orion">hygiene</keyword> conditions. Business Insider spoke to students and their parents to understand if this was a stray incident. Most students and parents say this is not a stray incident and that for the last couple of years hygiene conditions have been abysmal. The Students Council often finds itself caught between the management and the angry students. In another incident, one of the hostels had bedbug infestation and “despite repeated protests nothing much was done,” says another student. The day the video went viral on Tuesday evening, Professor and Registrar of the University Dabiru Sridhar Patnaik wrote a mail to the parents, stating: “Pursuant to the videos about unhygienic food practices that were circulated we have immediately taken cognizance of the matter relating to food preparation by the Sodexo team with extreme seriousness. We have ensured that the food material will not be used for consumption by members of the JGU community. As an immediate measure, we have issued a Show Cause notice to the CEO of Sodexo India seeking a written explanation and assurances on this matter.” Patnaik further states that his team has visited the kitchen and the dining areas to ensure corrective measures were immediately taken. He said meetings were held with all stakeholders including students in addition to having elaborate discussions with the Sodexo top leadership that included the Country Director of Sodexo. Interestingly, Sodexo, a global leader in the food business, has been running the canteen and kitchen operations at the OP Jindal Global University without close circuit cameras in place to monitor hygiene standards. In its response to the registrar’s mail, Sodexo’s Nitin Trikha, prefers to call the incident an “alleged” one even though the students themselves have taken the video and circulated it. Trikha in his response, which was also sent to the parents, says: “Following the complaints received at O P Jindal University in reference to a viral video on certain alleged unhygienic practices followed by cooking staff onsite, we would like to update you on the next steps undertaken that are already in action.” Even though Sodexo has undertaken deep cleaning and has cordoned off the affected parts of the kitchen, students continue to refrain from eating at the mess. Interestingly, even though closed circuit cameras are mandatory in educational institutions, kitchen premises on <keyword id="2063810" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="OP-Jindal-University" source="Orion">OP Jindal University</keyword>’s campus have not had any. Sodexo in its response has said: “We will revert with a strong and detailed plan by tomorrow evening which includes CCTV installations, use of technology for supervision and also strong disciplinary measures against the errant employee.” The senior Leadership team members are expected to reach the campus on Wednesday morning to review the entire operations. In a subsequent mail to parents late on Tuesday night, the registrar of the University conveyed that the Vice Chancellor of the University too had held elaborate discussions with the students. In its second response to the Univ, Sodexo has acknowledged the incident. A response by Sodexo’s Nitin Trikha has said: “We deeply regret the unfortunate incident reported and the discomfort caused to the students and parents. The interactions and every input received from members of the student council are acknowledged, valued and will be worked upon in a progressive manner. As we speak, several measures have already been adopted around cleaning, hygiene and safety protocols followed onsite. A thorough audit of the entire food preparation process, deep cleaning and sanitization have been concluded. CCTV installation is underway and steam cleaning of the entire kitchen area will be undertaken tonight.” JGU has been ranked as the Number 1 <keyword id="284807" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="private-university" source="Orion">private university</keyword> in India by the prestigious QS World University Rankings 2023, but students say that “there’s little that is world class here.” According to one third year student from one of the 12 schools of JGU, she has been suffering from food poisoning frequently and the medical officer too has advised the student not to blame the mess or the quality of food on campus. <div type="image" title="OP Jindal 2" agency="Business Insider India" height="900" width="1200" msid="103202008" hostid="261" caption="&amp;lt;p&amp;gt;Students say that they have been complaining about water cleanliness for months now.&amp;lt;/p&amp;gt;"></div> Students also claim that some were suspended for putting out their experiences on social media. Students have shared images and videos of the drinking water available at the campus with Business Insider and the same has not been independently verified. This problem of poor drinking water has allegedly been persistent for the last 18 months. Other complaints by the students Students say that life on the campus is hard for a variety of other reasons that do not pertain to food and hygiene alone. The management has also not been able to control the use of narcotics on the campus, which has led to higher levels of security and frisking. One senior year student says: “Because of the usage of drugs, now we are frisked randomly and we have been told our privacy does not count as it is an emergency. We are frisked randomly and our private parts are even searched, which is very humiliating.” Mails sent to the Registrar of the University remained unanswered till the time of publishing. Commuting is allegedly an issue in the campus as well. The OP Jindal University campus is spread over 80 acres in Sonipat, Haryana. Students say that the problem is heightened as given the size and location of the campus they find it hard to step out and eat outside. Exiting the campus up to the third year requires parental approval. Within the campus too many students complain that the only mode of getting from one place to another is by walking. Generally, cycles and institute buses are used in large campuses. Here, the university does not provide transportation or even buses within the campus. Says another student, “It is hard during the summer months to move between schools and buildings.”

India introduced the GST which replaced 28 taxes and cesses and has introduced the bankruptcy code which brought in credit discipline. The corporate tax has been reduced and is now at par with global levels and India today is no longer a fragile economy." Furthermore, Kant elaborated on key initiatives which have been important for India's growth. "In the post-Covid era, there has been enormous focus on infrastructure. In the last nine years or so, India created close to about 14 million houses, which is more than the population of Australia, built about 120 million toilets, almost like creating a complete Germany of toilets in India, and has provided pipe water connections to 260 million Indians, which is like providing pipe water connection to the entire population of Brazil." He also touched upon the rapid expansion of roadways, expressways and other infrastructural elements which have spurred growth in India. "Japan, Korea and later China grew at a rapid rate because global trade was also growing at the same time. India needs to accelerate the pace of growth at a point of time when global trade has slowed down. India's growth story has largely been on the services sector but we need to ensure that we become a manufacturing nation and create about 50,000 large manufacturing companies with size and scale. These large companies will create their own momentum. At the same time, India has to push for sustainable urbanisation in a very big way. To grow at a rapid pace for three decades, we need to also focus on improving learning outcomes, which remain very poor in India. New Delhi, May 8 () US-based The Law School Admission Council (LSAC) has decided to administer the 2020 LSAT-India entrance examination online for the first time ever from June 14 due to the Covid-19 pandemic. LSAC said LSAT-India, which was a paper-pencil test since its inception in 2009, becomes India's first and only Law Entrance Exam to be entirely online, AI-enabled remote-proctored. The move to online exam will enable candidates to take the test from the convenience of their home or other respective settings without worrying about their health and safety, it said in a statement. Candidates seeking admission to law schools in the country will be able to take the LSAT-India from June 14, 2020 using an online test delivery system. It said Pearson VUE, one of the leading players in computer-based testing in the world, administers this test as an Artificial Intelligence (AI)-enabled, online solution for aspirants to take their required college admissions tests in a safe manner, thereby overcoming the restrictions posed by the Covid-19 lockdown. It is the first time in more than 25 years of existence of Pearson's Virtual University Enterprises (VUE) that an AI-enabled remote-proctored online solution has been made available in this format.LSAC President and CEO Kellye Testy said, "The worldwide pandemic Covid-19 has clearly had a profound impact on how we live and on how business is conducted around the world. How has the last month been for you? How have you observed the consumer behaviour changing? Have you witnessed any uptick in demand? The novel Coronavirus has brought online education to the forefront, which otherwise was playing second fiddle to the offline model. Majority of India has become accustomed to the new normal, which indeed is a catalyst in this situation. Individuals have become extremely alert about the collateral damage (fears of job loss and insolvency) that they may suffer and are looking forward to utilising the additional time on hand meaningfully, by opting for upskilling options. We have launched the largest cohort (batch) with 4,000 learners in March and have doubled our course capacity in April, to cope with the surge. We have moved to monthly cohorts which earlier was at a quarterly level with each class now having a peak of 1000 learners at a given time. Additionally, with over 6 lakh downloads till date, our Android mobile App (upGrad App) houses professional communities in the field of Product Management, Data Science &amp; Machine Learning, MBA, and Digital Marketing with live discussions, exchange of ideas and opportunities within each community. In these communities, engagement in terms of comments and shares increased by 143% in the same period. Overall, the app downloads increased by over 75% after the lockdown was announced on March 24 this year. Also, with remote working coming into force, we have witnessed a growing intent towards business &amp; management programs. There’s been an increase in total interests and enrollments we have received for our Global MBA programs, which we have launched earlier this year in partnership with the renowned Liverpool John Moores University (LJMU) and Deakin University. These programs have contributed to 40% of the growth recorded in April. Q. Have you introduced any new courses/tools to leverage this surge in demand? We have now doubled our course capacity and moved to monthly cohorts (batches) which earlier was at a quarterly level, to take on the surge in demand from working professionals. Each batch now has a peak of 1000 learners at a given time. Recently after the COVID-19 outbreak, we are allowing learners to start a university-certified MBA, Master’s or Diploma program at an initial cost of ₹10,000 only, and experience it till June 15, 2020. We have received more than 1,00,000 interests and over 1000 enrolments, so far. Additionally, we also launched a wide range of free programs, which offer 350+ cumulative hours of content in terms of recorded sessions, quizzes, live lectures, projects, etc., and have reported more than 26,000 enrolments, till date. Q. Do you expect this uptick to continue even after the lockdown ends? upGrad recently launched the whitepaper with FICCI in which research indicated that 92% of learning leaders have confirmed the adoption of online learning journeys from 68% in the pre corona period. Most of these are in building digital skills in the areas of Data Sciences, AI, ML, Full Stack Software Engineering, Digital Marketing and MBA courses. Even before COVID-19, online education in India was on the rise, and people were making a gradual shift from offline to online. However, with COVID-19 hitting the world suddenly, the pandemic has steered everyone towards online learning, making it mainstream rather than just another option for learning and upskilling. Online education has hit the fast track and with various universities and colleges adopting edtech platforms, we think the demand will be sustained even after the COVID-19 era. The comfort, safety, and flexibility offered by online education will continue to steer the demand. Q. How does this quarter look like for you? Do you still see upGrad meeting its goals? The current COVID-19 situation is a net positive for online education. In Q4, upGrad recorded over 100% Q-0-Q jump, as it expanded its portfolio twofold by adding new programs under its Management and Data verticals. We have witnessed a 72% growth in booked revenue in April and touched the 53K paid learners mark at the ARPU of ₹ 2.5 lakhs, highest across the online education landscape. We have also successfully crossed the mark of 5,00,000 learners, who are largely working professionals, from the South Indian cities of Bengaluru, Hyderabad, followed by Mumbai, Delhi NCR, and Pune. Additionally, this quarter we have partnered with the Top B- School - IMT Ghaziabad for an 18-month online program, followed by a job guarantee by upGrad; we have also partnered with the renowned O.P. Jindal Global University for 2 new Degree programs- a 1-year LLM in Corporate &amp; Financial Law and a 2-year MBA in Digital Finance and Banking. Even in India, online education has proved its robustness as compared to the offline institutes that have been shut for an infinite period. Owing to its flexibility and feasibility, learners in the coming times would prefer to take up online programs from the comfort and safety of their houses. Also, as the trend continues, with more and more renowned universities adopting e-learning and investments reducing in infrastructure, the cost of education will substantially be reduced. Therefore, to conclude, I would like to add that the online learning sector is anyway on an upward trajectory and will continue to rise in the future, making it the way forward. Q. You had announced last month that you are looking at acquiring companies. How is that search coming along? Have you found your partners yet? Capitalizing on the boom for the online learning sector, both worldwide and in India, we have earmarked ₹500 million for 2/3 acquisitions in FY 21. We are in active discussions and have also shortlisted a few prospective companies. However, it is too early to commit who these companies are, as we are still in the process to meet some great entrepreneurs and understand their vision. Q. Tell us a bit about your recent campaign? The new #AageKiSoch rap song, is the sequel to upGrad’s upskill anthem by the same name which was launched last month and reached 30 million individuals. This quirky piece aims to inspire young Indians to stay productive and upskill themselves during the nationwide lockdown. The latest music video is a fresh take on how professionals and college students now have extra time in hand and can use it meaningfully to enhance their professional growth, at large. upGrad through its marketing effort is trying to shed the stereotypical perception of education brands being serious. These two sets of videos (last ones and this one) bear testimony to the fact that creativity and storytelling is at the centre of our marketing communication. In these uncertain and stressful days, how are you communicating with your audience? With the remote working concept, individuals and working professionals have been deprived of a very important aspect of human civilization- which is socializing. To minimise the adverse effects of the widespread pandemic on the psychological health of individuals, we had launched a ‘COVID-19 Awareness Program’ last month. It was a 5-day long online program, wherein the domain experts gave live talks on safeguarding one’s finances, and career along with mental health in the current scenario. Also, expert sessions were hosted live, allowing for active interactions and query resolution for the ~4500 participants who participated, completely free of cost. Additionally, we understand that the remote working has also brought other side effects to the forefront, like lethargy, lack of interest in work, monotony, etc. Therefore, to motivate individuals to use this extra time on hand, meaningfully and to promote productivity, we have launched #AageKiSoch campaign last month, and have successfully reached 30 million individuals. Q. What does your media plan look like? Which medium gets your lion's share? At the beginning of the year, we announced a budget of Rs 175 crore as a part of our media plan for the year 2020, wherein we have Rs 100 crore allotted for television and Rs 75 crore for digital. Both the mediums have seen higher traction during the pre and post COVID-19 outbreak and therefore, we are continuing with it. Q. In the wake of last month's fiscal cliff embarrassments, a growing number of conservative leaders have been pushing for <keyword id="66537" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="Republicans">Republicans</keyword> to lay off the <keyword id="44647" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="debt">debt</keyword> issue and start talking about something else ... something more positive.
<a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/eric-cantor-less-interested-in-the-debt-2013-1">House Majority Leader Eric Cantor has reportedly led the charge among House Republicans</a>, urging his caucus to start figuring out "how to make life work better," a new motto that is also the title of a speech Cantor will give at the American Enterprise Institute on this topic next week. At the Republican National Convention, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/jindal-gop-stupid-party-rnc-2013-1">Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal told the GOP to "stop being the stupid party,"</a> and start talking about growth, rather than austerity. 
Despite the lofty rhetoric, however, Republicans have offered few specifics about what their new economic agenda would look like. What we want to know now is: What exactly are these "pro-growth" policies that Republicans claim to want to pursue?
We posed this question to Brad Dayspring, Republican communications strategist who has been actively pushing a new "pro-growth" message. 
"There are lots of different policies that you can look at," said Dayspring, a former aide to Cantor who was recently named communications director for the National Republican Senatorial Committee. Specifically, Dayspring said, Republicans could look at lowering taxes and rolling back regulations as possible policies that would promote economic growth.
"Underneath those policies is the desire to get investors investing again, to get consumers consuming again, and to get employers hiring again," he said. 
Dayspring's rather limited answers underscore the fundamental struggle that the <keyword id="107893" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="GOP">GOP</keyword> faces in coming up with a "positive" economic agenda:
Conservative ideology has centered around limited government principles, which almost always see federal power as the problem, rather than a solution. As a result, it is difficult for Republicans to come up with any economic solutions that don't revolve around Federal cuts. 
In his New York Times column today, David Brooks highlights this problem and calls for a split in the GOP, imagining a new wing of the party that doesn't ascribe to its anti-government tenets.

Can current Republicans change their underlying mentality to adapt to these realities? Intellectual history says no. People almost never change their underlying narratives or unconscious frameworks. Moreover, in the South and rural West, where most Republicans are from, the Encroachment Story has deep historic and psychological roots. Anti-Washington, anti-urban sentiment has characterized those cultures for decades.
It’s probably futile to try to change current Republicans. It’s smarter to build a new wing of the Republican Party, one that can compete in the Northeast, the mid-Atlantic states, in the upper Midwest and along the West Coast. It’s smarter to build a new division that is different the way the Westin is different than the Sheraton.
The second G.O.P. would tackle both problems at once. It would be filled with people who recoiled at President Obama’s second Inaugural Address because of its excessive faith in centralized power, but who don’t share the absolute antigovernment story of the current G.O.P.
Brooks' third-party Republicans are clearly a fantasy; moreover, he probably overestimates the divisions in the GOP.
As Dayspring illustrates, the GOP's recent shift away from spending cuts toward a "smarter," "pro-growth" message is still rhetorical, rather than substantive. Republicans fundamentally believe that the amount of <keyword id="35077" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="government-spending">government spending</keyword> is a major long-term problem. 
"I think we can walk and chew gum at the same time," Dayspring told Business Insider. "Cutting budgets is a necessity of our environment, but it's not exactly an aspirational message. I think most Republicans understand that, I think most House Republicans understand it. They need to be able to balance the need to cut budgets with a positive vision for economic growth." 
"The more often we can do that, the more often we will be equipped to sell our economic message," he added.
