Ola Electric is cutting 500 jobs across verticals and levels as part of a restructuring exercise, according to people aware of the development. The company, which has come under the scanner for its poor aftersales service recently, had started the job cut in the September quarter. "It has been going on for some time now, starting around July. It has been a gradual process of removing redundant roles across verticals and levels," said a source. The exercise is expected to be completed by the end of this month. Ola Electric is looking to optimise workforce with an aim to improving margins and enhance profitability, the person added. Earlier this month, Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA) had ordered a detailed probe into complaints related to alleged "deficiencies" in services and electric two-wheelers manufactured by Ola Electric. Last month, the company had said that out of 10,644 complaints received from CCPA, it has resolved 99.1 per cent of the complaints.

The company's losses in the April-June period of 2023 were Rs 267 crore, according to an exchange filing. Revenue from operations for the quarter under review was Rs 1,644 crore against Rs 1,243 crore in the same quarter of the previous fiscal, according to the filing. The Bengaluru-based firm said its total expenses during the first quarter grew to Rs 1,849 crore compared with Rs 1,461 crore in the June quarter of FY24. The company made its market debut earlier this month. The company in a statement said its automotive segment (E2W) posted a strong improvement in EBITDA (earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortization) margin and is close to EBITDA breakeven. The quarter witnessed the highest-ever deliveries of vehicles by the company at 1,25,198 units as against 70,575 units delivered in the same period last year, <keyword id="4393078" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Ola-Electric" source="Orion">Ola Electric</keyword> Mobility said. The company also said it ramped up deliveries of its mass-market scooter portfolio (S1 X portfolio) during the quarter which helped accelerate the growth, adding that the existing product portfolio also saw strong demand which continued growth momentum throughout the quarter. According to Ola, the increasing scale of operations has benefited the company in the form of lower manufacturing costs and supply chain optimization. These benefits of scale are further amplified by the company's scalable platform-based product development and manufacturing technology that results in high degrees of commonality across its products, it said. The company also announced on Wednesday the integration of its cells in its vehicles by the first quarter of next fiscal. Ola said it will launch its electric motorcycle portfolio across mass and premium segments during its annual flagship event on August 15, 2024. Ola Electric Mobility losses widen to ₹347 crore in Apr-Jun quarter

The company also reported a jump in revenue from operations for the April-June quarter of 2024-25. The stock jumped 15.77 per cent to Rs 128.09 on the BSE. Meanwhile, the group has rebranded its ride-hailing service as Ola Consumer, announced a partnership with Open Network of Digital Commerce (ONDC) and launched automated warehousing solutions to cater to quick commerce requirements. Besides, Ola said it will bring to the market the first indigenously designed and developed family of chips for AI, general computing and Edge by 2026 under its Krutrim venture. Speaking at Sankalp 2024 - Ola's annual launch event on Thursday, Ola Founder Bhavish Aggarwal said currently, two-thirds of India's two-wheeler market consists of motorcycles, and it was imperative for the company to enter the segment. "We have already been successful in accelerating the EV adoption in the scooter segment, and with our futuristic portfolio of products, we are now focused on supercharging the EV penetration through our motorcycles," he said. Aggarwal also said Ola's indigenously developed 'Bharat 4680' cell and battery pack will be integrated with its own vehicles starting in the first quarter of FY26. The company so showcased its all-new Gen-3 platform for two-wheelers. "Coupled with the integration of our cells in our vehicles starting early next year, we are determined to chart a new course for mass EV adoption across India," Aggarwal added.

In an interaction with PTI editors at the agency's headquarters here, he said the private sector has to do the bulk of job creation, step up and do more, while creating an enabling environment and correcting imbalances, such as that of trade, are the responsibility of the government. Aggarwal also supported the government's move to offer fiscal incentives to global EV makers, including Tesla, through the new EV policy saying it is important for India to attract all kinds of investment, and globally established players will help in the development of the EV ecosystem in the country. "There is a global technology transition happening and AI is a very important technology of the future, and we in India need to lead this journey. If you look at the current state, I think we are still adopters of somebody else's technology paradigms, especially in the digital world," Aggarwal said, explaining why the Ola group had set up AI start-up Krutrim last year. One of the things in Krutrim is to build AI models on Indian data, which is more attuned to Indian use cases, Indian paradigms, he said, adding, "We are making our own AI, on our own cloud, on our own chip." Despite India producing 20 per cent of the world's digital data at present, he lamented that the country does not fully own the data, as 80 per cent are stored outside, which are then processed into AI and "brought back into India and sold to us in dollars". When asked about concerns over AI leading to job losses, he allayed the apprehension saying that the IT boom created jobs in India when people feared that computers would take away jobs, and AI is a similar tool. "AI is not going to replace anyone. Maybe that future is a few decades away... We don't need to get anxious about that future right now. We need to, as a country, see that AI is going to amplify productivity. If we don't get onto the bandwagon, we will be left behind...," he asserted. In his view, Aggarwal said the way forward is for India to become experts in future technology. "Future technologies bring with it jobs of the future, supply chain of the future. And if we are global leaders, we are the fastest adoptive market of future technologies (then) jobs of the future will be built in India, supply chains of the future will be built in India. This is the only way... If we focus on protecting the past, you remain uncompetitive," he added. Sharing his take on employment generation in India, Aggarwal said, "I actually believe the private sector has to do the bulk of the job creation. The government's job is to create the enabling environment, create the fundamentals, help correct imbalances wherever they are, be it trade imbalances, etc and incentivise wherever it needs to be incentivised, like the PLI schemes." The government's steps such as the employment-linked incentives will also encourage private industry, he said, adding "But fundamentally the private sector has to step up and do more". Asked if the government is doing enough to create that ecosystem for the private sector, Aggarwal said, "I'm not in the government, so I want to put the limelight on ourselves. Is the private sector doing enough? I think we all can do more, and I'm on the same page. We all need to do more." In response to a query on his views over the government in extending the fiscal concession that companies like Tesla have been demanding from India, he said, "It is very important for India to attract all kinds of investment, especially (from) world leading companies. "Tesla is a best in class company. The more companies like these invest into India, the better it is for India, in a broad sense as well for the industry." He further said, "The (EV) ecosystem, including my company, will benefit from it, because it will raise the bar on expertise, on excellence, on talent, everything..." About the newly-listed entity Ola Electric, he said, "Our mission at Ola electric is to really make India a global EV hub." The company will build products such as electric two and three-wheelers that Indians need for the country to be able to invent an EV and energy transition paradigm for itself, different from the current global solution for sustainability that is focussed on electric luxury cars, Aggarwal added. On Ola Consumer, he said the ride-hailing mobility vertical is fairly profitable, while it is investing into the new e-commerce for which it has partnered with ONDC.

The company had reported a net profit of Rs 434 crore in the April-June quarter of last fiscal. Total income rose to Rs 10,448 crore for the period under review as compared to Rs 9,142 crore in the year-ago period, TVS Motor Company said in a regulatory filing. On a standalone basis, the company posted a profit after tax of Rs 577 crore for the first quarter as compared to Rs 468 crore in the June quarter of the last fiscal, it added. Total income rose to Rs 8,412 crore for the first quarter as against Rs 7,275 crore in the year-ago period. The company said its overall two-wheeler and three-wheeler sales including exports grew 14 per cent year-on-year, registering sales of 10.87 lakh units in the quarter ended June 2024 as against 9.53 lakh units registered in the quarter ended June 2023. Motorcycle sales grew by 11 per cent year on year at 5.14 lakh units in the first quarter as against 4.63 lakh units in the same period last fiscal. Scooter sales grew by 19 per cent year-on-year to 4.18 lakh units in the April-June quarter this year. Three-wheeler sales for the quarter under review stood at 31,000 units as against 35,000 units in the year-ago period, TVS said. Electric scooter sales for the quarter ended June 30, 2024, stood at 52,000 units as compared to 39,000 units in the April-June quarter of last fiscal. Shares of TVS Motor Company on Tuesday ended 0.75 per cent down at Rs 2,474.45 apiece on the BSE. TVS Motor Q1 profit rises 6% to ₹461 crore; total income at ₹10,448 crore

For the same period last year it reported a 931.1 billion yen ($6 billion) loss. Masayoshi Son's company — once associated with its notorious <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/weworks-nightmare-ipo">failed bet on WeWork</a> and other lossmaking startups — pointed to gains made across its Vision Funds, its huge investment vehicles with both public and private holdings in tech companies.Gains for its Vision Fund 1, a $98.6 billion investment vehicle launched in 2016 with backing from Abu Dhabi and Saudi Arabia's sovereign wealth funds, totaled $3 billion in the second quarter. They will all list when the time is right."Despite the investment gain, Vision Fund 2 has lost an overall total of $21 billion since its inception. SoftBank is betting on AI and an IPO revival after swinging to a $7.7 billion profit

"At Rs 1,189 crore, growing 31 per cent YoY (year-on-year), the company reported its highest ever and 19th consecutive quarter of PAT growth on the back of strong operational performance and execution excellence across all its businesses of generation, transmission &amp; distribution, and renewables," Tata Power said in a statement. According to the statement, these businesses contributed 84 per cent of the PAT (net profit) in Q1FY25, compared to 72 per cent in the same period in FY24. The statement showed that the consolidated net profit before exceptional items was Rs 906 crore in the quarter ended June 30, 2023. The company's revenue rose 12 per cent YoY to a record high of Rs 16,810 crore (from Rs 15,003 crore in Q1 FY24), and EBITDA grew 11 per cent to Rs 3,350 crore in the reported quarter (from Rs 3,005 crore in Q1 FY24). EBITDA refers to earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization. "All our businesses have grown profitably on the back of operational efficiency, execution excellence, and sustained business momentum," said Praveer Sinha, CEO and Managing Director, Tata Power. He informed that the planned capex for this financial year is Rs 20,000 crore and the company is committed to adopting and leading the new and emerging clean energy technologies, including pumped hydro projects, hydropower projects in Bhutan, and opportunities to develop small modular nuclear reactors as the government policy evolves. The company has recorded a capex investment of Rs 4,000 crore in Q1FY25. It has a clean and green installed capacity of 6.1 GW as of Q1FY25, accounting for 41 per cent of the capacity, with another 5.3 GW under execution. The combined order pipeline for utility-scale EPC and solar rooftop, including group captive, is Rs 15,500 crore. Tata Power is poised to garner 20 per cent market share in the residential rooftop segment on the back of its new solar manufacturing facility and strong pan-India channel partner network, it said. Tata Power net profit up 31% to ₹1,189 crore in June quarter

Mining conglomerate <keyword id="19919721" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Vedanta" source="keywords">Vedanta</keyword> Ltd on Tuesday reported 36.5 per cent rise in consolidated net profit at Rs 3,606 crore for June quarter FY25 due to improved margins and robust cost reduction across all operations. The company had posted a net profit of Rs 2,640 crore in the year-ago period. Income rose to Rs 36,698 crore over Rs 34,279 crore in the year-ago period, according to an exchange filing. Vedanta said in a statement that the proposed demerger of its businesses is on track and it has already filed the demerger scheme with NCLT after getting a nod from secured creditors. The company said that its board has approved a capex investment of USD 270 million for its oil and gas business. "The strategic priority for the Cairn Oil &amp; Gas business is to augment reserves and increase near term volume through infill wells and enhanced oil recovery. In order to deliver this, the Board has approved capex investment (net) of USD 270 million across fields in the Rajasthan block for drilling wells and construction of surface facility for ASP ( Alkaline Surfactant Polymer) injection," the company said in a separate filing. Vedanta Executive Director Arun Misra said that the company has delivered a strong start to the year, with exceptional EBITDA improvement of 47 per cent and PAT improvement by 54 per cent year-over-year on the back of improved margins, and robust cost reduction across all operations. "Our aluminium and zinc divisions continue to outperform industry benchmarks, consistently ranking in the top quartiles and deciles of the global cost curve. These achievements are a direct result of our strategic focus on cost, as reflected in a 20 per cent year-over-year reduction in overall cost," he said. The company's growth projects are well on track and it remains committed to commission the majority of these projects in FY25. "Moving ahead, our focus on operational efficiency, sustained expansion, and ESG excellence will guide our journey. With this dedication, we are confident in our ability to create substantial shareholder value in the year ahead," he added. Last month, the mining conglomerate raised Rs 8,500 crore (over USD 1 billion) through Qualified Institutions Placement (QIP) of 19.31 crore equity shares at an issue price of Rs 440 per share. Company's CFO Ajay Goel said, "The overwhelming response to the Vedanta's... QIP...underscores investors' huge confidence. The proceeds from the QIP will be further instrumental in deleveraging the balance sheet and reduction of finance costs. We have received all the requisite approvals and have filed the demerger scheme with the National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT) taking our demerger a step closer to reality." The company's gross debt stood at Rs 78,016 crore as on June 30, 2024. The Quick Service Restaurant (QSR) operator had reported a loss of Rs 1.59 crore in April-June FY24, according to a regulatory filing by the Jaipuria family-promoted firm on Monday. Revenue from operations in the quarter was Rs 1,221.90 crore as against Rs 846.63 crore in the year-ago period. Its "consolidated EBITDA for the quarter closed at Rs 220 crore, with margin at 18.3 per cent - an improvement of 1.7 per cent compared to the previous quarter," said an earning statement from the company. Total expenses in June quarter increased 42.9 per cent to Rs 1,201.28 crore. During the quarter, Devyani International Ltd (DIL) added 54 stores with an aim to reach consumers in its under-penetrated markets, it said. "With this addition, DlL's total store count moves to 1,836 stores as of June 30, 2024," it said adding it has plans to open 250-275 new stores in FY25. It is on track to meet the target of 2,000 stores across its brand portfolio within the current financial year, said DIL which also owns and operates South Indian vegetarian food QSR chain Vaango. The company continues to focus on "offering value-driven options to consumers to navigate market dynamics and drive growth. The company introduced innovative marketing campaigns and promotional deals across its range of brands, enabling it to capitalise on seasonal trends," it said. In June quarter, DIL opened 20 new restaurants for KFC taking the total count to 617. While for Pizza Hut, it added 15 stores in India, taking the total count to 570. It added 11 stores of Costa Coffee and by the end of June 2024, DIL was operating 192 stores. DIL also operates 40 stores of KFC in Nigeria and 28 stores of KFC and Pizza Hut in Nepal. It was also operating 295 stores of KFC in Thailand by the end of the June quarter. "We witnessed an improved performance for DIL in Q1, driven by seasonality and cost leverage from better ADS across our businesses. Our Thailand business also demonstrates growth with new store openings and a customer delight strategy," Chairman Ravi Jaipuria said. Shares of DIL were trading at Rs 178.60 apiece on BSE, down 1.27 per cent from the previous close.
