The report highlighted a 7.01% month-on-month (MoM) decline in overall retail auto sales, falling from 20.34 lakh units in July to 18.91 lakh units in August. Despite this monthly decline in sales, the auto sector witnessed a modest 2.88% year-on-year (YoY) growth compared to August 2023. "India saw 15.9% <keyword id="22508938" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="excess-rainfall" source="keywords">excess rainfall</keyword>, with a significant surplus in key regions, disrupting auto retail performance," said a report by FADA. <h2>Decline in sales</h2>The report added that the two-wheeler (2W) segment, despite showing a 6.28% year-on-year growth, registered a 7.29% month-on-month decline. As per the report, market saturation and weather disruptions were the key factors behind the decline in two-wheeler sales. <div type="Article" hostid="261" msid="113016216" title="August auto sales – Maruti Suzuki, Tata Motors and others report a decline in sales" mstype="2" mssubtype="0"></div> In the passenger vehicle (PV) segment, there was a 4.53% YoY and 3.46% MoM decline, while the commercial vehicle (CV) segment recorded an 8.5% MoM and 6.05% YoY decline. FADA noted that weak industrial demand and weather-related challenges were major contributors to the significant drop in commercial vehicle sales. <h2>Inventory levels continue to be a challenge</h2>FADA also highlighted growing inventory challenges in the PV segment, with stock days ranging between 70-75 days, representing approximately 7.8 lakh vehicles valued at ₹77,800 crore. The report noted that these high inventory levels, combined with aggressive OEM dispatches have created cash flow pressures for dealers, impacting their profitability. "Dealers under pressure due to aggressive OEM dispatches, with dealers facing cash flow challenges and reduced profitability" the report said. <h2>FADA urges banks to tighten funding</h2>To address this, FADA has urged banks and NBFCs to tighten funding for dealers with excessive inventory. Additionally, the report emphasized the need for dealers and OEMs to recalibrate their supply strategies to avoid a potential inventory crisis. For the upcoming months, the report paints an optimistic picture with the festive season offering growth opportunities. "So in that sense, on an average, then we are able to get a double-digit growth during the festive season," Iyer stated. Elaborating on the overall industry, which still remains a very small part of the overall passenger vehicle market in the country, he said the segment is headed for record volumes this fiscal year but not all players are witnessing growth." Some (companies) are even degrowing, some are flat and they are facing headwinds, but because we are the primary player in the market, we still feel the luxury car market should cross 50,000-51,000 cars this year," Iyer said. The luxury car market in India currently remains very small accounting for less than 2 % of the overall passenger vehicle market in the country. Audi India Head Balbir Singh Dhillon said the automaker anticipates positive buying trends to continue during the festive season. "Our best-selling models - the A4, A6, Q3, Q3 Sportback, Q5, Q7, and the newly launched Q8 - continue to drive robust demand," he added. The company is equally optimistic about the e-tron range, the e-tron GT and RS e-tron GT, Dhillon said. BMW Group India President Vikram Pawah said the fundamentals of the Indian economy are sturdy and consumer confidence in the luxury segment is on the rise. "For BMW Group India, the order bank is solid and we are trying our best to speed up deliveries for our customers. Along with additional bookings around Diwali and Dussehra, we are confident of closing the year on a high note while clocking impressive growth," he stated. He noted that the group is witnessing very strong demand for products across all segments. Pawah said that in the run-up to the festive season, the company has introduced several special editions of its existing model range. The festive season usually commences with Onam and ends with Diwali every year.

Luxury carmakers Mercedes, Audi, BMW expect robust sales this festive season

The overall <keyword id="762866" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="Passenger-vehicle" source="Orion">passenger vehicle</keyword> (PV) registrations last month stood at 3,09,053 units, as compared to 3,23,720 units in August 2023. "Even with the arrival of the <keyword id="19894908" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Festive-season" source="keywords">festive season</keyword>, the market remains under significant strain... Inventory levels have reached alarming levels, with stock days now stretching to 70-75 days and inventory totalling 7.8 lakh vehicles, valued at an alarming Rs 77,800 crore," Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA) President Manish Raj Singhania said in a statement. Rather than responding to the situation, PV Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) continue to increase dispatches to dealers on a month-on-month basis, further exacerbating the issue, he added. "FADA urgently calls upon all banks and NBFCs to intervene and immediately control funding to dealers with excessive inventory," Singhania said, adding that dealers must also act swiftly to stop taking on additional stock to protect their financial health. The OEMs, too, must recalibrate their supply strategies without delay, or the industry faces a potential crisis from this inventory overload, he said. "If this aggressive push of excess stock continues unchecked, the <keyword id="23047448" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="auto-retail-ecosystem" source="keywords">auto retail ecosystem</keyword> could face severe disruption," Singhania said. Commercial vehicle registrations saw a 6 per cent year-on-year dip in August, while tractor retail sales also witnessed a drop of 11 per cent as compared to the year-ago period. Two-wheeler sales, however, increased 6 per cent year-on-year to 13,38,237 units in August, as compared to 12,59,140 units in the same month last year, on the back of improved stock availability and the onset of the festive season, Singhania said. Three-wheeler retail sales also increased by 2 per cent to 1,05,478 units last month, as compared to 1,03,782 units in the year-ago period. Overall registrations last month saw an increase of 3 per cent year-on-year at 18,91,499 units, as against 18,38,501 units in August last year. On business outlook in the near term, FADA said it remains cautiously optimistic. While the festive season and improved rural demand present promising opportunities for growth, ongoing weather uncertainties and high inventory levels may temper the overall recovery, it stated. To navigate these challenges, strategic inventory management and targeted marketing initiatives will be crucial in maximising festive sales and mitigating risks from adverse weather conditions, it added.

According to Kushal Bhatnagar, Associate Partner at Redseer, mobiles and electronics remain key value and growth drivers this festive season, especially as consumers respond to affordability options that make premium products more accessible. “Moreover, sellers and platforms have the potential to unlock the pent-up demand in the category by optimising for pricing and selection,” Bhatnagar added. As brands look to capitalise on the festive demand, many are strategically leveraging e-commerce platforms to cater to the aspirational customers’ needs and reach the relatively less accessible customers in tier 2 cities and beyond. “As a result, they look to partner deeply with the leading platforms to attract customers via lucrative discounts and offers available in the large-scale festive events,” he said. This festive season, brands are looking to push premium stock keeping units (SKUs) at a discounted price, to encourage aspirational buying. Quick commerce, which saw significant traction in 2023, is set to contribute approximately 8% to overall e-commerce growth, up from the 5% growth recorded last year. Newer categories such as home and kitchen appliances are likely to get pushed aggressively on quick commerce platforms and could also help the platforms to boost their average order values and profitability as per the report.
