<ul class="summary-list"><li><keyword id="14374448" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="sanjaya-malakar" source="Orion">Sanjaya Malakar</keyword> was an "<keyword id="12528075" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="american-idol" source="Orion">American Idol</keyword>" finalist as a teen in 2007.</li><li>The singer is known for being criticized by Simon Cowell and widely mocked in pop culture.</li></ul><p>These days, Sanjaya Malakar would prefer to be known for making delicious pastries — not for being comic relief on "<a href="https://www.insider.com/second-place-american-idol-singers-reveal-what-it-was-like-losing-2022">American Idol</a>."</p><p>The night before his <keyword id="11905869" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="interview" source="Orion">interview</keyword> with Insider, the 32-year-old was in his kitchen making limoncello panna cotta. But 15 years ago, the then-17-year-old auditioned for season six of "American Idol" without any idea of the legacy that would follow.</p><p>Sanjaya — who quickly gained Oprah-esque first-name recognition on the show —is the first to acknowledge he's no Fantasia Barrino or Carrie Underwood, but he's ready to move past the same jokes he's been hearing since he was a teenager and earn respect as a fully developed artist.</p><p>Over the past few years, he said, he's had invitations to come back on "Idol" for live shows and press opportunities, but he soon felt that a pattern developed.</p><p>"I went back and it just felt like they were really excited for me to be able to be made fun of more," he told Insider. As grateful as he was for the show, he said he felt like "Idol" played a game of "let's see how many punchlines we can get out of him."</p><p>For years, he said, he tried to "roll with it." But when Sanjaya was invited back to "Idol" in May <a href="https://www.insider.com/category/american-idol-anniversary-feature">for the 20th anniversary</a>, he decided to set ground rules.</p><p>"I'm totally down," Sanjaya recalled telling the "Idol" team. "I just want to say one thing: Every time I've ever gone on to 'American Idol,' I've been the butt of the joke."</p><p>"If I do come back," he added, "it would be really great if I was able to present myself as an artist, not as a reality-television joke."</p><p>After Sanjaya set new terms for himself, he said, a showrunner told him his flight to Los Angeles for the reunion would be too expensive to cover.</p><p>"I guess boundaries are expensive," he told Insider.</p><h2>His first brush with reality television was just a small dose of what would come</h2><div type="image" title="2007 american idol final twelve grouped together on the red carpet" height="2011" width="2681" msid="92680881" hostid="261" sizebytes="382462"></div><p>The Seattle-born singer <a href="https://www.insider.com/american-idol-william-hung-she-bangs-audition-story-2022-6">auditioned for "Idol"</a> with his older sister, Shyamali, and he has said he immediately felt as if producers were trying to fish a "sibling rivalry" angle out of them.</p><p>In behind-the-scenes interviews, he said he felt he was pushed to answer questions in a certain way that felt "contrived" and "calculated." It was his first glimpse into produced television, where story sometimes supersedes reality.</p><p>When <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UftlO6J7HOc">Sanjaya met the judges Simon Cowell, Randy Jackson, and Paula Abdul</a> for the first time, he serenaded them with Stevie Wonder's "Signed, Sealed, Delivered (I'm Yours)." All of the judges agreed to put him through to Hollywood. Shyamali also made it through but was cut before the top 40.</p><p>As Sanjaya made it further and further in the competition, he started to lose goodwill with the judges, especially Cowell.</p><p>After his first audition, the most positive praise the British personality had for the teen amounted to lukewarm acceptance.</p><p>"I'm going to hate myself for this," but, "it wasn't horrible," Cowell said after Sanjaya's performance of "Bésame Mucho" during the top eight.</p><p>Representatives for ABC, Fox, and "American Idol" did not immediately respond to Insider's request for comment. </p><h2>But the mockery and criticism of Sanjaya quickly reached new heights</h2><p>Despite the jabs at his expense, Sanjaya had a devoted following of fans — dubbed Fanjayas — and even won best male teen reality star at the 2007 Teen Choice Awards.</p><p>But Cowell wasn't Sanjaya's only critic. The second line of the singer's Wikipedia page still describes him as "commonly parodied in popular culture."</p><p>On March 19, 2007, the radio host <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2007/03/31/arts/television/31idol.html">Howard Stern encouraged his listeners to vote for Sanjaya</a> through a website called Vote for the Worst as a publicity stunt meant to ruin the show.</p><p>That same week, <a href="https://www.seattlepi.com/ae/tv/article/Idol-s-Sanjaya-Malakar-mocked-on-SNL-1232306.php">Sanjaya was parodied on "Saturday Night Live" by Andy Samberg</a> opposite Kristen Wiig and Fred Armisen as his adoring, crying fans. (Sanjaya was <a href="https://uproxx.com/tv/pete-davidson-donald-trump-sanjaya-malakar-snl/">also an "SNL" punchline in 2015</a>, courtesy of the comedian Pete Davidson).</p><p>Week after week, Cowell marveled at Sanjaya's ability to stay in the competition. At one point, Cowell <a href="https://www.thefreelibrary.com/Cowell+in+Idol+threat.-a0161223171">even threatened to quit "Idol"</a> if Sanjaya won.</p><p>Things came to a head during the top seven, when Sanjaya sang Bonnie Raitt's "Something to Talk About." The performance earned mixed reception from Jackson and Abdul.</p><p>Cowell called it "utterly horrendous" and "as bad as anything we see at the beginning of 'American Idol.'"</p><p>The judge's words yielded boos from the crowd, and the host Ryan Seacrest even stepped in to defend the young singer.</p><p>"Simon, even if it wasn't his best performance, you've really never liked this guy," Seacrest said. "So was it the song? Or you just don't like Sanjaya?"</p><p>That night, Sanjaya was <a href="https://www.insider.com/american-idol-runner-up-knew-kelly-clarkson-would-win-season-one-2022">eliminated from the show</a>.</p><h2>Sanjaya has grown up a lot in the past decade, but he says people are still stuck in 2007</h2><p>Looking back, Sanjaya said he had no way of knowing how drastically the trajectory of his life would change in the span of a few months.</p><p>"I didn't realize how intensely it would happen that there would really be no turning back," he said. "And there will be no way ever for me in my life to take back the memories that so many people have of me in their living room."</p><div type="image" title="Sanjaya Malakar on the American Idol stage in a white suit singing" height="1510" width="2013" msid="92680883" hostid="261" sizebytes="80938"></div><p>After "Idol," Sanjaya was caught in the awkward position between needing money to pay rent and being advised not to do anything to affect his public image.</p><p>"Getting a job after doing 'American Idol' was really difficult for me," he said. "Not because people wouldn't hire me or anything like that, but because I had people telling me: 'No, you can't get a job. If you get a job, people won't value you as much as an artist.'"</p><p>He recalled people telling him, "You don't want people to see <a href="https://www.insider.com/american-idol-interesting-things-you-never-knew-from-contestants-2022-6">Sanjaya from 'American Idol'</a> working at a pizza shop."</p><p>Sanjaya added: "I'm like, 'Oh, cool. Yeah, I get that. But also I need to pay rent.'"</p><p>As time passed, he created a life independent from "Idol," but he realized that some people had a harder time letting go of his association with the show.</p><p>One night, Sanjaya was headed to bed when an old friend called him from a New York bar and said: "Hey, I'm talking to my regular and he doesn't believe that I know you! Sing the song!"</p><p>Caught off guard, he tried to tell his friend that "no one gives a fuck" that he was on season six of "American Idol." He says he felt embarrassed when the bar patron joined the call and asked, "Who is this?"</p><div type="image" title="Sanjaya Malakar in 2016" height="1763" width="2351" msid="92680884" hostid="261" sizebytes="327804"></div><p>Nevertheless, Sanjaya still gets stopped on the street. He said being recognized for "Idol" still "feels like a dream sequence."</p><p>"It feels like once upon a time I was on my high-school football team and did really well at <em>one</em> game <em>one</em> time and people remember it and bring it up for a second," he told Insider.</p><p>He knows many people who stop him still see him as the child who competed on "Idol" back in 2007.</p><p>"They hear me sing and they're like: 'Oh wow! I had no idea that you could sing like that.'" Sanjaya said. "And I'm like: 'Well, I couldn't. It's been 15 years of me working on it, but thank you.'"</p><h2>He has since traded his microphone in for an apron</h2><p>Several years ago, Sanjaya stepped back from the music industry and started <a href="https://www.insider.com/lost-job-as-a-chef-never-want-to-go-back-2021-8">working as a pastry chef</a>.</p><p>Though he still loves singing, his biggest passion is cooking. He made croquembouche — an intricate French dessert consisting of pastries piled into a cone shape — for his sister's wedding and regularly prepares his grandma's egg-custard recipe.</p><p>"I tend to make myself comfort-food foods, and egg custard is the ultimate," Sanjaya said. "It's just milk, egg, sugar, vanilla, a little bit of nutmeg, and it's perfect."</p><p>Asked whether he would ever mix his passion for cooking with reality-competition shows, he said the stress would "ruin cooking" for him — as it did with singing for a little bit.</p><p>But he said he could envision himself briefly returning to the world of reality television for <a href="https://www.insider.com/the-masked-singer-cool-facts-2019-2">a show like "The Masked Singer"</a> just to see the looks on people's faces.</p><p>"I would want to go on, sing a song or something, have people be like, 'Oh, shit!'" Sanjaya laughed, "and, then, be done."</p>

<ul class="summary-list"><li><a href="https://www.insider.com/american-idol-interesting-things-you-never-knew-from-contestants-2022-6">"American Idol" contestants told Insider</a> the worst parts of competing on the reality show.</li><li>They said Hollywood week can be brutal, and it's hard to avoid online bullying after competing.</li></ul><p>Viewers don't see everything that goes down on <a href="https://www.insider.com/american-idol-fun-facts-2018-10">"American Idol."</a></p><p>Ahead of the Fox-ABC show's 20th anniversary, Insider asked winners and finalists to share the worst parts about being on the singing competition. </p><h2>The cash prize isn't as life-changing as some fans may expect</h2><p>Season-16 winner Maddie Poppe said the biggest misconception fans have is about the cash prize winners receive. </p><p>"People were asking my parents, 'So are you quitting your jobs?'" she told Insider. "They asked my sister, 'Oh, so are you quitting your job? Is your sister going to support you now?'" </p><p>Poppe said that people often assume that "Idol" winners are "set for life," but it's really just the start of their music careers. </p><p>"You do get $250,000, but not really because of taxes," Poppe told Insider. "And you get half of it before you complete your record, and then the second half you get after you complete the record. So it's just like an advance from the record deal, but I'm pretty sure I have to recoup it."</p><h2>One winner felt like he had little support for his debut album</h2><div type="image" title="Caleb Johnson performs onstage in a black suit with yellow lights in background" height="2747" width="3663" msid="92621285" hostid="261" sizebytes="187390"></div><p>Although Caleb Johnson won season 13 of "<keyword id="12528075" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="american-idol" source="Orion">American Idol</keyword>" and was instantly signed by the show's label, 19 Recordings, he said he had "absolutely no support behind the record" he produced after the show.</p><p>"Because the label wouldn't release the single, there was no single that came out after the record was done," Johnson told Insider. "There was no music video. There was nothing."</p><p>He said he eventually spent his own money on "a music video to release a single because there was nothing."</p><p>Johnson also said that trying to promote the album on his own while performing on the "Idol" tour after his season was "rough" and "grueling." </p><p>Representatives for 19 <keyword id="11896019" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="entertainment" source="Orion">Entertainment</keyword>, which owns 19 Recordings, did not immediately respond to Insider's request for comment. </p><h2>Competing in front of the whole country welcomes criticism, especially online</h2><div type="image" title="Diana degarmo competing on american idol" height="1133" width="1511" msid="92621286" hostid="261" sizebytes="66654"></div><p>Diana DeGarmo, who placed second on the third season of "Idol," said that hateful comments online "caused a lot of mental damage," on top of the criticism from the judges. </p><p>"I was getting it to my face by Mr. Cowell, weekly," DeGarmo told Insider, referring to <a href="https://www.insider.com/american-idol-judges-ranked-2019-3">judge Simon Cowell</a>. "And so at the end, I remember I thought, I kinda just want to go home."</p><p>Season-11 runner-up Jessica Sanchez said she received "a ton" of hatred online and had to learn to deal with it.</p><p>"I'm this little 16-year-old girl. And that's why I said I had to learn how to have thick skin at a really young age and just really learn, OK, whatever they're saying doesn't matter," she told Insider.</p><p>Season-seven winner David Cook told Insider he came across a "funny little hate site" that polled voters on who deserved to be on "Idol" the least. </p><p>"I remember seeing this one comment on there that bothered the hell out of me, and it just ate at me and ate at me and I couldn't find peace with it," Cook said. </p><h2>For another, dealing with sudden fame in real life was equally challenging</h2><div type="image" title="Melinda Doolittle wears a black vest and dark-blue silk shirt in front of &quot;American Idol&quot; background on red carpet" height="1391" width="1855" msid="92621288" hostid="261" sizebytes="95516"></div><p>Competing on "Idol" introduces singers to fans across the country, so it can be shocking to leave the show and get recognized on the street.</p><p>Melinda Doolittle, who competed on season six, said she had to hire security for six months after the show.</p><p>"The show was so big, especially at that point, like you could not walk more than 10 feet without getting stopped or people wanting pictures and wanting to talk to you," she told Insider. </p><h2>One runner-up said he feels like 'Idol' doesn't look after its former <keyword id="11892815" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="contestants" source="Orion">contestants</keyword></h2><p>According to <a href="https://www.insider.com/american-idol-finalist-judges-forced-him-to-beatbox-blake-lewis-2022-6">season-six runner-up Blake Lewis</a>, it's easy to feel forgotten after an "Idol" season wraps, especially since older seasons of the show aren't on streaming services. </p><p>He added that he's tried, unsuccessfully, to get copies of his season "for years" so he can watch it for the first time. </p><p>Lewis also went on to say that the "infrastructure" of "Idol" isn't built to promote or sustain connections with performers after a season ends, <a href="https://www.insider.com/second-place-american-idol-singers-reveal-what-it-was-like-losing-2022">especially if they didn't win</a>.</p><p>"'American Idol' doesn't give two cents about us after we're not on the show, unless you got first place," he told Insider.</p><h2>On early seasons, producers spent airtime 'making fun' of bad auditions</h2><p>Lewis said he never watched "Idol" before competing on the show, but he knew the series had a reputation for highlighting "fame seekers" and bad singers <a href="https://www.insider.com/american-idol-runner-up-happy-no-more-bad-singers-on-show-2022">during early audition rounds</a>. </p><p>"In passing, I think, someone had that on, and it was like, 'Wow, they're making fun of people,'" Lewis told Insider. </p><p>Season-nine runner-up Crystal Bowersox likened the show's penchant for airing bad auditions to "bullying." </p><p>"I have noticed that the show has moved away from what they used to do, which was let people through the competition or the judgment process knowing that they were just simply going to make fun of them and crush their dreams and send them home," she told Insider. </p><p>Sanchez also said she's happy the show has moved away from airing <a href="https://www.insider.com/american-idol-william-hung-she-bangs-audition-story-2022-6">those kinds of auditions</a>.</p><p>"If you're going to have airtime, you should be pushing people that are really serious about music and that have really been dedicating their lives to it and put a lot of, pretty much blood, sweat, and tears into the music," she said. </p><h2>The audition process can be lengthy and expensive</h2><div type="image" title="Getty Images David Cook american idol" height="899" width="1199" msid="92621290" hostid="261" sizebytes="59304"></div><p>Singers don't perform for <a href="https://www.insider.com/all-american-idol-judges-where-are-they-now-photos-2021-7">judges like Cowell, Paula Abdul, and Randy Jackson</a> during their first audition. Several contestants said there are multiple rounds of initial screenings.</p><p>"People always seemed a little shocked when I tell them that my audition in front of Simon and Paula and Randy was my fifth audition," Cook told Insider.</p><p>He also earned a lot of "frequent flier miles" during auditions, flying back and forth from Oklahoma to Nebraska over the course of three months. </p><p>"Once you get to Hollywood Week, they put you up in cover flights and all that, but yeah, for the city auditions segment, you're on your own pocket," Cook said. </p><p>Several contestants traveled long distances for their auditions, like season-15 runner-up ASE, formerly known as La'Porsha Renae, who made a 29-hour drive to audition in Providence, Rhode Island. </p><p>Although DeGarmo was based in Georgia, she flew all the way to Hawaii to audition for her season before the city tours ended. </p><p>Throughout her rounds of auditions, she also said she had to wear the same exact outfit, which came with challenges when she didn't live in the area.</p><p>"I remember trying to air out my clothes because they just reeked so bad from standing outside in the heat, and trying to steam it in the shower of the hotel you're in and flattening out the sticker," DeGarmo said.</p><h2>Hollywood Week can be pretty grueling</h2><div type="image" title="Maddie poppe competing on american idol" height="2463" width="3283" msid="92621291" hostid="261" sizebytes="212236"></div><p>"Idol" finalists didn't hold back when it came to describing the first week in Hollywood after auditions. Season-six finalist Sanjaya Malakar said the week was like "a punch in the face." </p><p>"I think they purposefully try to push you to your limits emotionally and physically and mentally just to see how you react," Poppe told Insider. </p><p>DeGarmo said that Hollywood Week meant constantly being "camera-ready," even as stress and lack of sleep whittled down the competition. </p><p>"You just have to be ready to go at any time, which is very draining and stressful," she said, adding she saw a lot of "bad-ass performers" breaking down or getting sick.</p><h2>The week of the finale can also be particularly difficult </h2><p>For season-13 runner-up Jena Irene Asciutto, who competed alongside Johnson, the toughest part was the finale. </p><p>"By the end of the finale, I think Caleb and I had just sang in six or seven different performances that week," she said. "So we were burnt the fuck out." </p><p>Johnson said it was stressful because his "voice was blown out" for the finale.</p><p>"They did this kind of unorthodox thing where they took a needle of adrenaline and would spray my vocal chords to basically make it come back," he told Insider. </p><p>Lewis called the season-six finale the "worst week of my life" because he felt the final song both finalists had to sing for the competition, "This Is My Now," was "written for Jordin Sparks."</p><p>"That whole week was terrible," Lewis told Insider. "No one gets to see the behind-the-scenes, no one gets to see me like in agony, like just this should be like the dopest week of my life, <a href="https://www.insider.com/american-idol-runner-up-finale-song-issue-blake-lewis-jordin-sparks-2022">but I know I'm getting second place</a>."</p><h2>One winner said he hated his 'coronation' song</h2><p>"My winner single was crap, and I would say that 90% of every other winner's single is crap," Johnson told Insider. "Like it's the cheesiest thing."</p><p>When it came to his finale, Johnson was so "pissed" about his "coronation" song "As Long As You Love Me" that he said he fought against producers until the last live show. </p><p>"It was an amazing experience to win it, but it was a not-so-amazing experience to sing a really crappy song," he said.</p><h2>For better or for worse, contestants have a hard time shaking their 'Idol' title</h2><div type="image" title="Jena Irene Asciutto wearing a white and red jacket with eyes closed singing into microphone with green lights in background" height="2174" width="2898" msid="92621292" hostid="261" sizebytes="387992"></div><p>Johnson said being associated with the show has led to some professional hang-ups.</p><p>"Do I always love being labeled as <a href="https://www.insider.com/where-are-they-now-american-idol-winners-2018-5">'American Idol'-winner</a> Caleb Johnson? Not really. But is that what I am? Yeah," he said. "You seal the deal when you do that show."</p><p>After competing, Lewis said he wasn't able to return to the gigs he'd been doing before "Idol."</p><p>"It's such a double-edged sword," he told Insider. "Like all the cool stuff I was doing before hosting festivals? Never got hired for that ever again, just cause I was a part of that show."</p><p>Asciutto said she struggled to grow her music career after "Idol," especially since the show didn't offer her a record deal.</p><p>"All anyone cares about is this 'American Idol' title, which is dope, but it's a reality-TV show," she told Insider. "And it's also not the music industry, which is a complete fact." </p><p>She continued, "After the fact, like two or three years after, I was pissed. Is that all I'm fucking known for?"</p><h2>Competing on 'Idol' comes with plenty of sacrifices</h2><p>For many contestants, competing meant walking away from jobs, school, or whatever else they were doing at the time.</p><p>Poppe said she had to "take the leap of faith" and drop out of school when she made it on the show.</p><p>According to Bowersox, the producers also barred contestants from taking any outside gigs while filming their season. </p><p>"Telling me that I couldn't perform?" she said. "That was my sole source of income."</p><p>Bowersox said she ended up finding a way to perform under an alias without getting disqualified from the competition. </p><p>On season six, Lewis said contestants weren't allowed access to their social-media profiles during filming.</p><p>"My YouTube and MySpace was taken until you got off the show, like three months off the show," he said. "I'm like, how am I supposed to have a fan base after this? It's insane."</p><p>Representatives for "American Idol," Fox, and ABC did not immediately respond to Insider's request for comment.</p>

Trump reportedly asked the driver to stop and got out to confront the mugger.</p><p>"The guy with the bat looked at me, and I said, 'Look, you've gotta stop this. Put down the bat,'" Trump told the Daily <keyword id="6355005" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="News">News</keyword> at the time. "I guess he recognized me because he said, 'Mr. Trump, I didn't do anything wrong.' I said, 'How could you not do anything wrong when you're whacking a guy with a bat?' Then he ran away."</p><p>The story has received renewed traction lately after Trump claimed that he would have <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/trump-florida-high-school-armed-deputy-wouldve-run-in-2018-2">confronted the shooter</a> in last month's horrifying school shooting in Florida - with or without a weapon.</p><p>"I really believe I'd run in there even if I didn't have a weapon," Trump said at a meeting with state governors this week.</p><h2>Trump's heroism put into question</h2><p>Conservative media outlets like <a href="https://www.redstate.com/slee/2018/02/27/trump-rushed-stop-school-shooter-well-stop-mugging-91/">Red State</a>,&#xa0;<a href="http://www.breitbart.com/big-government/2018/02/28/report-trump-jumped-limo-stop-mugging-1991/">Breitbart</a>, and&#xa0;<a href="https://www.rushlimbaugh.com/daily/2018/02/27/flashback-1991-trump-stops-mugging-in-nyc/">The Rush Limbaugh Show</a>&#xa0;have all touted the 1991 incident as evidence that Trump has indeed engaged in acts of heroism in the past.</p><p>But the only identified witness of the mugging,&#xa0;Kathleen Romeo-Nunez, said Trump had no role in stopping it because he showed up just as it was ending, the Daily News <a href="http://www.nydailynews.com/new-york/witness-trump-stop-bat-beating-1991-article-1.3848686?utm_content=buffer28cc3&amp;utm_medium=social&amp;utm_source=twitter.com&amp;utm_campaign=NYDailyNewsTw">reported</a>.</p><p>"He came at the tail end of the event," said Romeo-Nunez, who was 16 years old at the time and had just come out of a store on 45th Street in Manhattan.</p><p>She added Trump had "no opportunity" to intervene.</p><p>"A car pulls up, he gets out, people acknowledge his presence," she said. "He's looking around, seeing what's going on. Then he got back in and left."</p><p>Romeo-Nunez said that the mugger was already fleeing the scene as Trump's limo arrived, and the two never spoke to each other. We're celebrating everyone having their time on the stage and making it their own," she said. "The coolest thing is the contestants are having the time of their lives. No matter who was revealed, they say it's the best experience they've ever had," she added.</p><p>That's a far cry from the reality <keyword id="6355065" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="TV">TV</keyword> of just a few years ago, which was fixated on judging, capturing people at their absolute lowest lows, producer-manufactured drama, and generally had a mean-spirited vibe.</p><p>You might think the reason reality TV became so popular is because people enjoy watching others get humiliated - how else can you account for the success of shows like "Jersey Shore"?</p><p>But, as Business Insider reported back in 2016, our reason for loving reality TV <em>isn't </em>humiliation. We'll give you a hint - it's when Nicole "Snooki" Polizzi got punched in the face at a bar, causing the entire cast (who wasn't quite fond of her yet) to rally around her and defend her. And <em>that's </em>what viewers responded to, the need to defend Snooki, and the familial love that the cast showed each other.</p><p>While the rest of the show did continue focusing on their train-wreck-esque existences, the only reason people really kept coming back was due to the love and support shown by the cast - and this was back in 2009.</p><div type="image" title="jersey shore" height="1341" width="1788" msid="80390777" hostid="261"></div><p>Over a decade later, television has finally caught up with what people responded to all those years ago: empathy.</p><p>"The Great British Bake Off" ("GBBO") has been steadily rising to become one of the most beloved cooking shows of all time since its debut in 2010 (though it didn't become super popular in the US until it was added to Netflix in 2018).</p><p>What sets it apart from your other more high-stakes cooking shows like "Chopped," "Top Chef," and "Cutthroat Kitchen" are its genuinely lovely vibes. The contestants are polite to each other, there's no screaming or hair-pulling, the judges are nothing compared to how tough Americans can be, and viewers are always sucked in by the promise of low drama.</p><p>Similarly, "Nailed It," another Netflix cooking show, takes all the mean-spiritedness out of a show like "Worst Cooks in America," and instead focuses on the laughs. <a href="https://www.vox.com/culture/2020/4/1/21202876/nailed-it-netflix-season-4-review">Vox called it</a> "one of the sweetest, most supportive, silliest ways to entertain yourself and your family."</p><blockquote class="twitter-tweet blockquote" data-lang="en" data-cards="" data-conversation="">—Bia⁹ fsd  (@HwiKyun_99) <a href="https://twitter.com/mims/statuses/1334587040470609923?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">December 3, 2020</a></blockquote><p>During a year like 2020, is it any wonder that people flocked to shows that made them feel better about the world and the people in it, instead of wallowing in drama and backstabbing? <a href="https://variety.com/2020/tv/global/the-great-british-bake-final-highest-rated-show-channel-4-1234839964/">"GGBO" scored series-high ratings in the UK</a> for its November 2020 finale, while "Nailed It" has spawned two holiday specials, multiple international versions, and three Emmy nominations. Its fourth season dropped in April 2020 to <a href="https://decider.com/2020/04/01/nailed-it-season-4-on-netflix-2/">a resounding "thank god" from the internet</a>.</p><p>Positivity has paid off for "The Masked Singer" too. As Abdul said, though they are competitions, "The Masked Singer" and "The Masked Dancer" don't have judges, only panelists. They're never rude about the contestants' lack of singing or dancing ability, and instead frequently praise them for having the courage to go up there and perform at all. It's, for lack of a better word, wholesome.</p><p>It was the <a href="https://www.thewrap.com/the-masked-singer-big-premiere-fox-ratings/">highest-rated unscripted television series debut</a> since 2011, and when its ratings increased by 30% after DVR, it had the highest increase ever for a premiere in reality TV history. The last two seasons of "The Bachelor" and "The Bachelorette." When season 24 of "The Bachelor" wrapped up in March, viewers needed a break, even if they didn't realize it. Although the famous quote goes "I'm not here to make friends," the reality shows that have risen to the top of the pack suggest that that's not the case anymore.</p>

Reality TV used to be about drama and humiliation, but the most recent hits prove it's time to change

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Former real-estate agent and dancer Amy Jordan was hit by a <keyword id="72226" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="New-York-City">New York City</keyword> bus in 2009. </li><li>She could no longer work her previous jobs and spent the years since rebuilding her body and life.</li><li>She learned to trust her instincts, accept change, and that she had to do the work.</li></ul><p>Everyone has come home from a long day, taken off their shoes, and, in response to a partner or roommate asking, "So, how was your day?" replied with, "I feel like I got hit by a bus."</p><p>I too have had this experience on many occasions.</p><p>Then it happened to me. On Friday, May 1, 2009, I was crossing the street in New York City. I was working as a residential real-estate agent and had just closed a client deal and was on my way to my office.</p><p>One moment I was in the crosswalk minding my own business. The next moment, I was face down on the pavement and couldn't move.</p><p>It was a rainy day, and the ground was damp and dirty. I felt fuzzy, like I was in a dream. A few moments later I heard, "Ms. Jordan, do you know where you are?" "Who is the President of the United States?" "Do you know what day it is?"</p><p><em>Why all the questions?</em> I thought, still unable to move. I had lost all feeling on my right side. A moment later, the same voice said, "Just relax. I am a paramedic. We are going to get you out from under the tire of this bus."</p><p>The cliché line had become a terrifying reality. I had literally not only been hit but run over by an NYC express bus.</p><p>The gory details that came to follow are their own story. In a nutshell, my right leg was completely crushed, nearly amputated, and rebuilt. I had a total of 20 surgeries. I spent two months in a burn-intensive care unit, fighting daily for my survival.  </p><div type="image" title="Amy Jordan." height="541" width="720" msid="82945807" hostid="261"></div><p>I'm a dancer, and it was quickly apparent that life as I'd known it was over. My body was structurally different. </p><p>I'd been teaching <keyword id="6355317" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="dance">dance</keyword> and fitness outside my day-to-day job, and my employment was dependent on my ability to show property and climb stairs. I couldn't go back to any of my former jobs.</p><p>I was visibly deformed and now had mobility challenges. A lot of necessary attention was paid to rebuilding my body. What I found missing was attention to how I would rebuild my life.</p><p>It's been 12 years since the accident. A student shares what it's like.</a></em></p><h2><strong>1. Trust your instincts</strong></h2><p>The first hospital wanted to amputate my crushed right leg. I said no and demanded a second opinion. </p><p>I have the utmost respect for doctors and medical professionals, but I knew at that moment that amputation was premature. I also knew I wasn't in a hospital equipped to treat that level of trauma.</p><p>I got on the phone and found a team of medical professionals who could handle the severity of the situation. I was transferred to one of the world's <a href="https://www.nyp.org/burn-center">best burn ICU units</a>. They took on the task of rebuilding my battered body. I wasn't afraid to not only question the first hospital but find the best place for me at that moment.</p><h2><strong style="color: #000000;">2. Keep seeking answers</strong></h2><p>There was no playbook for rebuilding my body and my life. So I kept trying things out to learn what my new body was capable of doing.</p><p>Being a dancer and fitness instructor, I found a gym that felt emotionally safe and worked out and took classes. Sometimes, I had to leave or modify what I was doing because it was too physically taxing. I sought out new rehab trainers who understood my physical and emotional goals.</p><p>I let go of any shame or guilt if something I tried didn't work. Ultimately, I continued to seek new ways of literally moving around in the world. I knew if one thing didn't work, I could find something that would.</p><h2><strong style="color: #000000;">3. Change happens, and that's okay</strong></h2><p>The day I was discharged from outpatient rehab was rough. I asked my physical therapist, "This is it?" She reminded me that I had come back from near death.</p><p>After a good cry and a brief wallow, it was time to look ahead. I had to get comfortable with the fact that I was starting completely over and everything would be new and different. My body had new needs. I was working through major trauma and severe PTSD. I learned to give myself space and grace to adapt and accept my new reality.</p><h2><strong style="color: #000000;">4. Something magical can come from <keyword id="6388475" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="tragedy">tragedy</keyword></strong></h2><p>Before being pinned under the tire of a bus, spending months in a burn ICU, enduring 20 surgeries, and doing thousands of hours of rehabilitation, I never would've imagined how much value this journey could create.</p><div type="image" title="Amy Jordan's book" height="1745" width="1163" msid="82945810" hostid="261"></div><p>People began to ask me how I had such a miraculous rehabilitation and positive outlook. My business coach encouraged me to write a book. I started writing my experience by committing one hour a day to the writing process. I was led to a publisher. The book was released in 2018 and was awarded the <a href="https://selfpublishingnews.com/2019/08/22/congratulations-to-our-evvy-award-winners-3/">2019 EVVY award</a> for best nonfiction book.</p><p>The day of the accident I vowed that if I survived the night there would be a victory dance. In 2015, I founded <a href="https://www.victorydance.org/">The Victory Dance Project</a>, a professional dance company. The mission is to make the impossible possible with the power of movement. </p><div type="image" title="Amy Jordan's movie" height="640" width="428" msid="82945813" hostid="261"></div><p>I also became the subject of a documentary feature film.  Working with my dance company, I met photographer and director Brian Thomas, a two-time Emmy nominee who choreographed and danced for Michael Jackson, Beyoncé, Paula Abdul, and Liza Minnelli, among other entertainment icons. He thought my story could be a source of inspiration and expressed an interest in creating a documentary.</p><p>The movie, "Amy's Victory Dance," chronicles my journey dancing with my professional company for the first time since the accident. The film has won over 40 international awards and official film festival selections.</p><p>If you told me this in the beginning, I would've responded with a few choice expletives. But hindsight is 20/20. I now make a daily vow to create value and use my experience for good.</p><h2><strong style="color: #000000;">5. Do the work</strong></h2><p><strong style="color: #000000;"><div type="image" title="Amy Jordan" height="640" width="427" msid="82945815" hostid="261"></div></strong></p><p>Emotional and physical rehabilitation takes time and effort. I don't miss workouts because it's how I manage my pain without pills.</p><p>I rest when I'm tired. I say no to gatherings or events that are too physically demanding for me. I put a significant amount of time and energy into my physical health.</p><p>It's a commitment. I've learned that diligence and self-care manifest real results. I also make no apology about what I need to do for my body and my mind.</p><p>My question is always: How much do you want to improve and what are you willing to do to make it happen? It's not magic. The rewards for the effort are amazing.</p><p>With all its physical challenges, I'm grateful for my life today. I feel a deep sense of responsibility to be the change I want to see. Whether I'm speaking to large audiences or coaching one-on-one, I tell anyone that if I did it, so can you. It might not be quick or easy, but the lessons are profound and long-lasting.</p><p>If you're in the muck of the struggle, just know that it does get better. It drew more than 30 million viewers per episode and was the No. 1 show for <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2015/05/12/business/media/american-idol-will-end-its-run-in-2016.html?_r=0">eight years</a>, but it's declined in viewership over time, and only drew about nine million people last year. </p><p>And it's undergone enormous change: Of the three original judges - Paula Abdul, Simon Cowell, and Randy Jackson - Abdul was the first to leave. Since then, others have come and gone, including Ellen DeGeneres, Steven Tyler, Mariah Carey, and Nicki Minaj. The current trio of Keith Urban, Jennifer Lopez, and Harry Connick Jr. has been together since season 13. </p><p>While some winners have all but seemingly disappeared from the public eye, the show has been a launching pad for stars like Carrie Underwood and Oscar winner Jennifer Hudson. Starting out doing local modeling and commercial work in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, he quickly moved out to Los Angeles with his family as an eight-year-old in the mid-1980s, where he got work on the Paula Abdul music video <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0pyxKqdtrH8" target="_blank">"Forever Your Girl"</a> and gained acclaim in the 1990s movie "Avalon."</p><p>Though it seems like a glamorous away to be brought up, Wood, 35, is revealing for the first time that Hollywood is dealing with a child sexual abuse epidemic.</p><p>In a revealing piece on the "Lord of the Rings" star for <a href="http://www.thetimes.co.uk/past-six-days/2016-05-22/news-review/hollywoods-evil-secret-mxsb5f3zl" target="_blank">The Sunday Times</a>, Wood is quoted saying child actors are regularly "preyed upon" by "vipers" in Hollywood.</p><p>Wood told the Times he "never went to parties where that kind of thing was going on," because his mother, Debra, protected him from interacting with people who could take advantage of him.</p><p>But he did note, "I've been led down dark paths to realize that these things are probably still happening."</p><p>Wood is not the first former child star over the years to make this claim.</p><p>In 2011, Corey Feldman told <a href="http://abcnews.go.com/Entertainment/corey-feldman-pedophilia-problem-child-actors-contributed-demise/story?id=14256781" target="_blank">ABC's "Nightline"</a> that he has been a victim of sexual abuse by men in Hollywood.</p><p>"I can tell you that the No. 1 problem in Hollywood was and is and always will be pedophilia," he said. "That's the biggest problem for children in this industry... It's the big secret."</p><p>Last year, the documentary "<a href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt3677412/?ref_=ttco_co_tt " target="_blank">An Open Secret</a>" delved into accusations of a pedophile ring in Hollywood. It put a spotlight on accusations by adults who said they were abused by men in the film industry when they were child actors. A large portion of the movie explores the convicted sex offenders who owned and operated the late 1990s multimedia company <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Digital_Entertainment_Network" target="_blank">Digital Entertainment Network</a>. </p><p>Though it was directed by Oscar-nominated filmmaker Amy Berg, the film had an almost nonexistent theatrical release.</p><p>Wood, who has seen "An Open Secret," said in the Times story that the film "only scratches the surface. I feel there was much more to this story than it articulates."</p><p>"People with parasitic interests will see you as their prey," Wood said of child actors who know little about the business and want to find a way to succeed. "I won't even tell you what I had to do to essentially get her assistant's phone number, or text number. I was texting her."</p><p>Tatum said that he wasn't even trying to contact her for a cameo. He had heard "through the grapevine" that his wife was bringing Abdul. Believing that an appearance by&#xa0;<span>Beyoncé</span> would probably be impossible, he wanted to get the singer's permission to use a life-size cardboard cutout of her as a joke.</p><p><span>"Ultimately, I ended up having to meet Beyoncé&#xa0;doing Beyoncé&#xa0;and that was definitely the most terrifying thing I've ever done," Tatum, who hadn't even rehearsed with the superstar singer, said.</span></p><p><span>"She's like Keyser Söze," he told&#xa0;DeGeneres, referring to Kevin Spacey's character in "The Usual Suspects." 'American Idol' has been such a vital part of Fox for its run. We spent a lot of time talking to producers about the future of 'American Idol' and collectively we all arrived at the conclusion that it was time to bring the show to an end," Fox's co-chairman and co-CEO, Gary Newman, said on a press call Monday morning.</p><p>"Idol" will return in January for its 15th and final season. <span style="line-height: 1.5em;">Host Ryan Seacrest and judges Jennifer Lopez, Keith Urban and Harry Connick, Jr. will return for the final season, which the network promises will be a suitable sendoff for the formerly groundbreaking competition.</span></p><p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">"We really wanted to do it in a way that felt special and celebratory and treated the show the way it deserved to be treated. Next year is going to be a true season-long celebration," Newman said.
