You can invest in the yellow metal without actually physically holding it for as low as Rs 1. The best part? You can buy or sell this gold 24 X7 seamlessly via multiple apps without having to pay storage costs. On your behalf, your gold is stored in insured vaults by the seller. But remember, digital gold continues to remain unregulated territory in the country, where you venture at your own risk. In 2021, market watchdog SEBI had even asked its members to desist from selling digital gold. Then there are gold mutual funds and the Sarkari SGBs, or sovereign gold bonds. While gold mutual funds invest primarily in gold ETFs, SGBs are issued by the <keyword id="19899808" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="rbi" source="keywords">RBI</keyword> and are also a reliable substitute for holding physical gold. However, with the RBI currently putting brakes on issuing SGBs, investing in them is out of the question. Plus, you should only get your hands on SGBs if you're in for the long haul. Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India], April 5 (ANI): <keyword id="19899810" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="reserve-bank-of-india" source="keywords">Reserve Bank of India</keyword> Governor Shaktikanta Das will announce the outcome of the first <keyword id="6375120" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Monetary-Policy-Committee" source="Orion">Monetary Policy Committee</keyword> (MPC) meeting of the financial year 2024-2025 on Friday. The central banking authority of India has kept the <keyword id="43352" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="repo-rate" source="Orion">repo rate</keyword> unchanged for the last six consecutive MPC meetings and according to experts it is likely to maintain the status quo on interest rates this time too. The repo rate, is the interest rate at which banks draw funds from <keyword id="30067" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="RBI" source="Orion">RBI</keyword> to overcome short-term liquidity mismatches. Monetary Policy Committee was constituted under the Reserve Bank of India Act, 1934. MPC is a six-member committee comprising three members from RBI including Governor Shaktikanta Das and three members appointed by the Central government. The two-day review meeting of the MPC that commenced on April 3 concludes today. The RBI had maintained the status quo on policy rates and stances in its last review, which was held in February 2024. The decision however was not unanimous and one member has recommended a rate cut of 25 basis points and policy change stand to neutral. Since the last policy, rating agencies have revised India's growth forecast upwards. <keyword id="7706673" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Finance-Minister-Nirmala-Sitharaman" source="Orion">Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman</keyword>, recently said that India will grow over 8 per cent in FY24. Inflation has dropped and has remained under the range of comfort zone. Consumer Price Index inflation was 5.1 per cent in February 2024, up from over 5.5 per cent in December 2023. The core CPI inflation, excluding food and beverages, was at a low of 3.5 per cent in February 2024. However, food inflation at above 7 per cent was a concern, but with a recent cut in the prices of petrol, diesel and LPG, it is likely to further fall in March and may come below 5 per cent. Meanwhile, the India Meteorological Department's (IMD) recent announcement of above-normal temperatures during April-June may be a concern regarding rise in prices of vegetable, fruits and other perishable items. Also prices of rice, pulses have shown an upward trend which may be a concern for the MPC while taking a decision. However, softening prices of non-food items will give some relief to the committee. Generally, normal monsoons follow above normal temperatures, presuming that the average CPI inflation is likely to be in the RBI's comfort zone of 4-6 per cent in FY25. According to official data, retail inflation in India eased a tad in February to 5.09 per cent from 5.10 per cent the prior month, due to the deceleration of prices in all categories except food. Experts believe that the RBI is unlikely to change its policy stance before the August 2024 MPC review and any rate cut is unlikely before that. The US Fed has also recently indicated that it is not in a hurry to cut rates. All these suggest that the RBI, too, is unlikely to go for a rate cut before the October 2024 policy. The next MPC meetings of the RBI have been scheduled this year for June, August, October, December and February 2025.

How G-secs work Investing in g-secs involves purchasing these bonds at face value, and the interest, also known as the coupon, is paid periodically, typically semi-annually or annually, until the maturity date. The interest rates on g-secs are influenced by various factors, including market demand, inflation, and the monetary policy of the Reserve Bank of India (<keyword id="30067" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="RBI" source="Orion">RBI</keyword>). Consequently, the prices of G-secs fluctuate inversely with the prevailing interest rates in the market. When interest rates rise, the value of existing G-secs falls, and vice versa. These securities are traded in the primary and secondary markets. In the primary market, they are directly issued by the government through auctions, while in the secondary market, they are bought and sold among investors. How to invest G-secs are available in various tenures, ranging from short-term (Treasury bills) to long-term (Government bonds). The Retail Direct Scheme by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) rolled out in 2021 enables individual investors to directly invest in government securities without requiring intermediaries such as brokers or mutual funds. The NSE goBID platform allows retail investors to participate in auctions for new G-sec issuances through your broker. This can be suitable for passive investors or those seeking exposure without actively managing individual bonds. “It is always easy for investors to buy subscription or redemption requests in a mutual fund, compared to looking out to buy or sell securities in the fixed income market. Also, one may buy and hold but in between prices can fluctuate. Many people may not understand the drivers of those price fluctuations,” says Pankaj Pathak, fund manager, fixed income, Quantum AMC. Interest rate risks G-secs do carry one particular risk, that of interest rate fluctuations in the broader market. When rates rise, existing G-Secs with lower rates lose value compared to newer securities offering higher rates. Conversely, falling rates increase demand for older G-Secs, potentially raising their value. Longer-term G-Secs are more prone to rate change risks than short-term ones. Investors holding G-Secs until maturity aren't affected by price fluctuations but can lose potential earnings if rates rise after purchase. “A sudden increase in interest rate can impact return. New Delhi, The government has permitted <keyword id="19951327" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="gst" source="keywords">GST</keyword> Network to share data about GST-registered businesses, based on their consent, with the <keyword id="19922074" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="reserve-bank" source="keywords">Reserve Bank</keyword>'s 'Public Tech Platform for Frictionless Credit'. The move will help entities get loans faster on the basis of shared Goods and Services Tax (GST)-related information. The platform, created by the Reserve Bank of India (<keyword id="19899808" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="rbi" source="keywords">RBI</keyword>) subsidiary Reserve Bank Innovation Hub, is intended to enable seamless flow of necessary information to lenders to help in disbursing credit. In a notification, the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) has said "the Central Government, on the recommendation of the Council, notifies 'Public Tech Platform for Frictionless Credit' as the system with which information may be shared by the common portal based on consent...". The platform has been developed for the operation of a large ecosystem of credit, to ensure access of information from various data sources digitally. The financial service providers and multiple data service providers can converge on the platform using standard and protocol driven architecture, the notification said. Moore Singhi Executive Director <keyword id="19994271" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="rajat-mohan" source="keywords">Rajat Mohan</keyword> said with appropriate consent from the supplier/recipient, GSTN is empowered to disclose specific details submitted in the GST registration application, along with data from outward tax returns, monthly and annual tax returns, and invoice preparations. "This arrangement ensures that borrowers cannot withhold any transactional information provided to lenders or the government portal. It enhances credit efficiency by minimising costs and the time required for processing. "Moreover, lenders gain access to authenticated monthly sales and purchase data directly from government-sanctioned sources, allowing for a more accurate and timely assessment of credit risk," <keyword id="19973713" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="mohan" source="keywords">Mohan</keyword> said. This move is to strengthen the pricing and management of credit by regulated entities. “The extant guidelines on connected lending are limited in scope,” said Shaktikanta Das, governor of RBI said in his speech where he announced that the Monetary Policy Committee <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/finance/news/rbi-expects-indias-gdp-to-grow-at-7-in-fy24-keeps-repo-rate-unchanged/articleshow/105828012.cms">has decided to keep repo rates unchanged</a>. RBI’s deputy governor Rajeshwar Rao clarified at the press conference that the regulations do not refer to interconnectedness. “Connected lending refers to persons who are in the position to control the decision of the lender,” he said, without giving any more details. Das said that it refers to cases where the director of a bank borrows from the same bank and can have some influence. It also refers to cases of related parties as well, he clarified. “It has nothing to do with interconnectedness,” Das said. The central bank has recently increased the risk weightage on unsecured loans given out by banks and NBFCs. “It’s a pre-emptive measure to address potential risks. We don’t wait for the house to catch fire and then act,” said Das. Neutrality and transparency to web-aggregators of loans The RBI also said it will lay down a regulatory framework for web-aggregation of loan products. Das said that he has noticed that such loan products are harming consumer interest and the framework is expected to result in enhanced customer centricity and transparency in digital lending. This move is a follow-up to the recommendations they received from the working group on digital lending norms, says Rabi Shankar, deputy governor of RBI. The Reserve Bank had introduced a regulatory framework for digital lending in August/September 2022. The digital lending ecosystem also comprises of services that aggregate loan offers from lenders (called web-aggregation of loan products) for guidance of customers. “Lenders on web platforms get their information from various sources and give weightage to customers. Sometimes they might miss something,” added Shankar. Das said that the move will bring neutrality, transparency and avoid mis-selling and also not influence the decision of the borrower. IndusInd Bank surges over 4% after RBI committee proposes to increase the cap on promoter stake in private sector banks

Mumbai, The <keyword id="50847" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="reserve-bank" source="Orion">Reserve Bank</keyword> on Friday approved Rs 87,416 crore dividend payout to the central government for 2022-23, nearly triple of what it paid in the previous year. The dividend payout was Rs 30,307 crore for accounting year 2021-22. The decision was taken at the 602nd meeting of the Central Board of Directors of Reserve Bank of India held under the chairmanship of Governor <keyword id="6359111" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="shaktikanta-das" source="Orion">Shaktikanta Das</keyword>. "The board approved the transfer of Rs 87,416 crore as surplus to the central government for accounting year 2022-23, while deciding to keep the Contingency Risk Buffer at 6 per cent," <keyword id="30067" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="rbi" source="Orion">RBI</keyword> said in a statement. The board also reviewed the global and domestic economic situation and associated challenges, including the impact of current global geopolitical developments. The board also discussed the working of RBI during 2022-23 and approved the annual report and accounts of the central bank for the year. Madan Sabnavis, chief economist of Bank of Baroda said that this surplus transfer will come in very handy and ensure that the government managed it fiscal numbers with relative ease given that there are question marks on the divestment programme. "The Budget had looked at a number of Rs 48,000 crore as dividend from banks and RBI. RBI has overshot this number with the transfer of Rs 87,000 cr. This was enabled by higher earnings on sale of forex during the year, better returns on forex investments in US treasuries (though value of bonds would have fallen which has to be charged to the contingency reserve), revaluation of forex assets and adjustments in reserves as per the Bimal Jalan Committee recommendations. The RBI would have had higher pay-outs due to the higher SDF rates with the system being in surplus all through the year," Sabnavis said. According to him, public sector banks have also reported very good profits and announced dividend, there will be higher flows of dividends from this source too. Add to this the possible higher dividend payments by the oil marketing companies and the situation appears quite comfortable from a market perspective as this will not lead to higher market borrowings.
