Their enormous salaries must reflect the incredible successes that their leadership yields. 
However, new research suggests otherwise.
Professors Michael J. Cooper, Huseyin Gulin, and P. Raghavendra Rau teamed up to examine the relationship between the <a href="http://papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers.cfm?abstract_id=1572085" target="_blank">CEO incentive compensation and the future stock price performance</a> of his/her company.
According to their research, CEO pay is negatively related to future stock returns for up to three years after sorting on pay. In other words, the more CEOs get paid, the worse the stock performs.
Their findings show that CEOs in the upper 10% of pay earn "negative abnormal returns" of approximately 8% for the next three years.
Additionally, this negative correlation is even stronger for CEOs who receive higher incentive pay compared to their peers. Incentive pay is typically tied to the longer-term performance of the company. 
So, why does this happen?
Cooper, Gulen, and Rau suggest that these enormous salaries lead to overconfidence by the CEO. This leads to aggressive and unnecessary investments and mergers and acquisitions that damage the value of the company.

What's certain is that it's not due to less aptitude for investing - some studies even show that female hedge fund managers outperform their male counterparts.A new survey of 791 industry professionals released by KPMG outlines where progress is being made, and what needs to happen to close the gender gap.First, some background. Here's KPMG:<ul><li>Women make up only 15% of hedge fund CEOs, 11% of private equity and venture capital CEOs, and 14% of real estate CEOs. For chief investment officers, those figures are 18%, 19% and 26% respectively.</li><li>79% of respondents, who were nearly all women, say it is more difficult for women fund managers to succeed in the industry than men. The overwhelming majority also said it's harder for women-owned or -managed funds to raise money.</li><li>44% said women are hindered by the stereotype that they are more committed to their personal lives/family than their work.</li><li>36% said women have less access to investor networks.</li><li>28% said women get less PR/visibility than men's funds.</li><li>29% of respondents said there's "weaker interest" in women owned/managed funds.</li></ul>"In alternatives, there are certain prototypical models of a fund manager: people with certain pedigrees and characteristics, physical and otherwise," PAAMCO's CEO Jane Buchan said in the KPMG report. "When someone conforms to that model, there's confirmation bias. However, if a fund manager is off-model-if, for example, they are a woman-as the research shows, they need to perform substantially better to get capital."Indeed, some research shows that women managers outperform men but don't raise nearly as much money.Here's KPMG on a 2016 study by Rajesh Aggarwal and Nicole Boyson of Northeastern University's D'Amore-McKim School of Business. The research looked at performance of nearly 9,520 hedge funds from 1994 to 2013. "The sixty-two surviving female run funds in the study had better returns and similar risk measures than their male-run peers (of which there were 1,669), but lagged male counterparts in several significant ways: the female funds had significantly less AUM ($150 million versus $222 million for male-run funds), lower management and incentive fees but longer tenure than their male-managed counterparts.""Our data suggested no inherent differences in skills between male and female-run funds, but, in order to survive, women-run funds have to be better," Aggarwal, the study's co-author, told KPMG. "And even when they survive they don't have the same [assets under management]."So how does one fix the gap? Defining the problem is half the battle. One issue is that female fund managers often say they have trouble raising money from investors, while investors say they have trouble finding women managers."That's the dichotomy of both sides of the coin," KPMG audit partner Kelly Rau, who helped organize the report, told Business Insider.About six out of the ten investor respondents said they thought there was a lack of supply in women-run funds.One of the issues is size. Women tend to run funds that manage less money, which means they have less resources for infrastructure which bigger investors require if they were to invest. Women think it's harder for them to succeed on Wall Street - but there's some hope

Some people might consider internet addiction to be&#xa0;a&#xa0;<a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/first-world-problems-are-no-joke-2014-3">first-world problem</a>&#xa0;and not a real affliction. A new study from the University of Hong Kong suggests otherwise.&#xa0;
According to the study, <a href="http://motherboard.vice.com/read/six-percent-of-people-worldwide-are-addicted-to-the-internet?utm_source=mbtwitter">which we first saw on Motherboard</a>, researchers estimate that 6% of the world's population is addicted to the internet.
The world's population is roughly 7 billion people, so that makes for about 420 million people addicted to the internet.
Importantly, not everyone in the world even has access to the internet. In fact, <a href="http://www.latimes.com/business/technology/la-fi-tn-60-world-population-3-billion-internet-2014-20140507-story.html">only 39% of the world</a> does.
According to the authors of the study, which was published in <a href="http://online.liebertpub.com/doi/full/10.1089/cyber.2014.0317" target="_blank">Cyberpsychology, Behavior, and Social Networking</a>,&#xa0;internet addiction is "generally regarded as a disorder of concern because the neural abnormalities (e.g., atrophies in dorsolateral prefrontal cortex) and cognitive dysfunctions (e.g., impaired working memory) associated with IA mimic those related to substance and behavioral addiction. Moreover, IA is often comorbid with mental disorders, such as attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and depression." 
In other words, symptoms of internet addiction aren't unlike those of other kinds of addiction.&#xa0;
Some countries are taking steps to eradicate internet addiction. China was among the first countries to call it&#xa0;<a href="http://www.thedailybeast.com/articles/2014/01/20/web-junkie-is-a-harrowing-documentary-on-china-s-internet-addiction-rehab-clinics.html">a clinical disorder</a>. The Chinese government has even built up to 250 boot camps to try <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/internet-addiction-treatment-camps-in-china-2014-7?op=1#ixzz3MMCJA1ip">to break Chinese teens of their internet addictions</a>.

Study: 420 Million People Around The World Are Addicted To The Internet

<ul><li>Nearly 50 <keyword id="62103" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="IAS-officers">IAS officers</keyword> in Bhopal have come up with an initiative to teach students of <keyword id="65626" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Government-schools">government schools</keyword> and help the teachers.</li><li>The officers teach subjects like English and Hindi in different areas. </li><li>On similar lines, Ruhi Danish Ashraf taught over 90 students in remote areas of Arunachal Pradesh for free, helping them clear examinations.</li></ul>In a bid to empower education in Indian Schools, nearly 50 IAS officers in Bhopal have come up with an initiative to teach students of government schools. The move was <a href="https://www.hindustantimes.com/india-news/ias-officers-in-bhopal-to-teach-students-in-government-schools/story-G3wd3iA4TajuYKeP6T2XoM.html">launched by IAS Tarun Pithode</a> on Monday, when 17 officers from the team took classes in several government schools — including higher secondary schools. The officers, who were willing to contribute, spared time before office to teach for two hours. The move, jointly taken with the School education department, is aimed at “sharing the burden” of teachers. “If higher officers join the initiative, it will help them in making education policy,” Pithode pointed out. The IAS officers, including retired ones, teach subjects like English and Hindi in different areas. Imparting education to women willing to restart studies, IAS Nidhi Nivedita said “People criticise the education system but they never try to become a part of it. When I taught students, I realised that they have a zeal to achieve something but they are lacking due to few opportunities. By taking classes, we are just motivating the students.” Recently, Ruhi Danish Ashraf, an IAS officer’s wife <a href="https://yourstory.com/socialstory/2019/05/ias-officer-wife-teach-physics-government-school">taught Physics</a> to over 90 students in remote areas of Arunachal Pradesh for free, helping them clear examinations. They use Zoom mostly for classes, which became remote this spring, and also for talking to friends. "I think part of it is that I'm not constantly aware of my own appearance in in-person classes, while on Zoom I'm constantly adjusting and readjusting," they told Business Insider. They said that throughout Zoom calls, they worry about lighting and angles, even monitoring their facial expression to ensure that they appear interested enough. Some of the technical issues common to Zoom and other video calling software also contributed to Pelz-Sharpe's burnout. They mentioned that it's both frustrating and exhausting to try to maintain a conversation while some participants' internet is slow, so audio can become out of sync or videos can freeze. People also tend to forget to mute themselves, which can be distracting with background noise. They found that these minor issues make every conversation last longer than it would in person. In their circle of friends, the feeling of Zoom fatigue is common."I feel like at the beginning of this situation people were a lot more interested in Zoom happy hours and birthday parties." Now, more of their interactions have turned into phone calls and one-on-one conversations.<div type="image" title="Zoom" height="683" width="911" msid="76482353" hostid="261"></div>Carley Campbell, a 19-year-old student, also uses Zoom for classes and work. She says she really started to feel the signs of Zoom fatigue setting in around mid-April, and they've kept growing ever since. "I felt like I needed to take a nap in between meetings and sometimes I debated skipping entirely."She told Business Insider that her burnout stems from the expectation of going from meeting to meeting while remaining serious and professional, and feeling like she had to "scramble to the next link," leaving no time for basic necessities like eating, sleeping, and caring for her pets.She thinks her problem is fairly universal: "I have yet to find someone who enjoys these Zoom meetings."Zoom fatigue seems especially persistent among students. Bernadette Bruu, a 20-year-old college student, said "I felt zoom fatigue before I even started using it, honestly."Her school is on a trimester system, so she was still on spring break when she saw everyone sharing memes and complaints about "Zoom University," as remote school is jokingly called. In a way, these shared grievances have even contributed to the burnout."That's the strange thing about this — everyone is going through the same thing, and that has become part of the fatigue — relatable humor, often from the professor or meeting host, takes up half of the dialogue in Zoom meetings. His company doesn't use Zoom because of <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/zoom-security-flaw-hackathon-dropbox-2020-4">security concerns</a>, but he uses it to talk to friends and family, advise other startups and funds, and for religious groups. Like others said, Rau finds audio-only calls preferable to video, and he usually suggests everyone turn off their webcams."I always joke and say, we all know what everyone looks like, save bandwidth," he said.Since the pandemic ended most in-person meetings, having a webcam turned on during calls has become more of an expectation, Rau says, and people feel compelled to use video in every call. She pointed out that living through a pandemic, racial injustice, and protests, plus all the distractions that come with Zoom, can lead to fatigue, and eventually burnout. Each person dealing with Zoom burnout mentioned trying to spend some time offline and focus on analog hobbies, though none had yet found a way to cure their fatigue.Dr. Hamill suggests increases resources while decreasing demands, if possible. For example, she said that having a wellbeing mindset, showing compassion to yourself, and taking the time for non-work social connections can help.Organizations can increase resources by encouraging and supporting flexibility and understanding, and not making assumptions about what is going on in people's lives right now.
