New York Post is a daily tabloid newspaper published in New York City. New York Post has quoted a viral study which is yet to be peer-reviewed. "The situation would be much more disastrous in the case of plant, animal, or human diseases caused by the revival of an ancient unknown virus," reads the "viral" study. According to the preliminary report, global warming is irrevocably thawing enormous swathes of permafrost -- permanently frozen ground that covers one-quarter of the Northern Hemisphere. This has had the unsettling effect of "releasing organic materials frozen for up to a million years" - possibly deadly germs included. "Part of this organic matter also consists of revived cellular microbes (prokaryotes, unicellular eukaryotes) as well as viruses that remained dormant since prehistorical times," the researchers write. According to the New York Post, scientists have, perhaps strangely, revived some of these so-called "zombie viruses" from the Siberian permafrost in order to investigate the awakening critters. The oldest, Pandoravirus yedoma, was 48,500 years old, a record age for a frozen virus returning to a form where it may infect other creatures. This breaks the previous record of a 30,000-year-old virus identified in Siberia by the same scientists in 2013. The new strain is one of 13 viruses described in the study, each with its own genome, according to Science Alert. While the Pandoravirus was discovered at the bottom of a lake in Yukechi Alas, Yakutia, Russia, others have been discovered everywhere from mammoth fur to Siberian wolf intestines. Scientists discovered that all of the "zombie viruses" have the potential to be infectious and hence pose a "health danger" after researching the live cultures. They believe that COVID-19-style pandemics will become more common in the future as melting permafrost releases long-dormant viruses like a microbial Captain America, as per New York Post. "It is therefore legitimate to ponder the risk of ancient viral particles remaining infectious and getting back into circulation by the thawing of ancient permafrost layers," they write. Unfortunately, it's a vicious cycle as organic matter released by the thawing ice decomposes into carbon dioxide and methane, further enhancing the greenhouse effect and accelerating the melt. New York Post reports that the newly thawed virus might only be the tip of the epidemiological iceberg as there are likely more hibernating viruses yet to be discovered. More research is needed to assess the level of infectiousness of these unknown viruses when exposed to light, heat, oxygen, and other outside environmental variables. But it's not the first time this has been seen. Previous research has found a rotifer, another type of nematode, was uncovered from Siberian permafrost after an estimated <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/animal-revived-after-24000-years-in-ice-could-reproduce-2021-6#:~:text=Russian%20scientists%20have%20been%20able,seen%20in%20the%20video%20below.">24,000 years</a> caught in the ice. Scientists <a href="https://www.newscientist.com/article/dn12433-eight-million-year-old-bug-is-alive-and-growing/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">in the 2000s</a> found a bacterium in ice taken from Antarctica. The tiny bug, <a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC7567650/#:~:text=Few%20pockets%20of%2034%2Dmillion,known%20living%20organisms%20on%20earth." target="_blank" rel="noopener">called Arthrobacter roseus</a>, was able to split and multiply in the lab, even though it was thought to have been taken from 8-million-year-old ice. <h2>We need to know more about ancient frozen bugs</h2>It's important to take the findings listed above with a pinch of salt.It's very difficult to keep samples pristine when extracting ancient ice, and even more difficult to conclusively date the ice. So it can be challenging to be certain that the bugs are not modern microbes dropped on the ice accidentally by the scientists themselves. Still, these findings are crucial as we're seeing more of the world's ice <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/melting-glaciers-ice-sheets-sea-level-rise-climate-disaster-2022-12">disappearing</a> in the changing climate, which could uncover more of these bugs frozen in time. It's not clear how the human body could react to these bugs, because we may never have encountered them. "You must remember our immune defense has been developed in close contact with microbiological surroundings," Birgitta Evengård, emeritus microbiology professor from the Umea University, told CNN, Insider previously reported."If there is a virus hidden in the permafrost that we have not been in contact with for thousands of years, it might be that our immune defense is not sufficient," she added.It's not just ancient bugs that have scientists worried. It's possible that bugs we've eradicated or kept under control could resurface from the melting ice. But, the Federal Veterinary and Phytosanitary Inspection Service suggested that the birds erratic behavior was caused by Newcastle Disease, a contagious bird disease that humans can catch.
Another group, the Veterinary Committee, suggested salmonella poisoning because of lesions in the intestines and livers of dead birds, a characteristic symptom of salmonella.
No matter what the cause, all humans should stay away from the sick pigeons, and call local authorities for proper disposal if they find the body of a bird.

More boys than girls with cancer in <keyword id="3658" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="india" source="Orion">India</keyword> are being diagnosed with the disease and the probable cause for this is gender bias in society, according to a study published in The Lancet Oncology. The researchers collected individual data of children aged 0-19 years with cancer extracted from the hospital-based records of three cancer centres in India between January 1, 2005, and December 31, 2019. They also used data from two population-based cancer registries: PBCRs in <keyword id="66" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="delhi" source="Orion">Delhi</keyword> between January 1, 2005, and December 31, 2014 and Madras Metropolitan Tumour Registry between January 1, 2005 and December 31, 2017. The researchers from All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi and Cancer Institute (WIA) Chennai calculated the male to female sex ratio from the three hospitals in the context of the ratio in the corresponding PBCRs. This ratio allowed them to see how many boys with cancer were seeking treatment for each girl seeking treatment. The team separately analysed the male to female ratios of patients undergoing stem cell transplant which is a comparatively expensive procedure used in cancer care. "We observed that among nearly 11,000 patients registered in the PBCRs, there was significant skew in favour of boys for getting diagnosed with cancer. Similarly, among the 22,000 children with cancer enrolled in the three hospitals, we saw that more boys were seeking treatment than girls," said Professor <keyword id="15658843" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="sameer-bakhshi" source="Orion">Sameer Bakhshi</keyword>, from Department of Medical Oncology, <keyword id="40458" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="aiims" source="Orion">AIIMS</keyword> New Delhi. "However, when we looked at sex ratios among patients seeking cancer care in the context of sex ratios at diagnosis, the skew in sex ratios was no longer apparent. This tells us that the bias towards boys originates at the community level. Once children are brought forward and diagnosed, there is no further gender bias in seeking treatment," Bakhsh, the corresponding author of the study, told PTI. The researchers noted that lesser girls were seeking treatment in hospitals in centres in Northern India as compared to Southern India. The disparity between the genders was more for patients coming from rural as compared to urban areas. This may have to do variations in social fabric in different parts of the country, they said. The study also found that lesser number of girls were coming to the hospital if the distance of the centre from their home was over 100 kilometers, signifying that if costs related to treatment increase, the bias would likely increase. The researchers observed that the male to female ratios in Delhi have been improving over the last 15 years. "The study clearly shows that more boys with cancer are being diagnosed than girls and the probable cause for this is gender bias in society," <keyword id="321831" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="bakhshi" source="Orion">Bakhshi</keyword> said. "Symptomatic girls might not be brought forward for evaluation and diagnosis, leading to fewer cancer diagnoses in girls. The nature of societal mind set affects this bias since we see that societies that are more patriarchal (like that in North of India) show a greater bias," he explained. Sex ratios are also affected by the cost of treatment. The researchers saw that less girls seek cancer care in situations where out-of-pocket expenditures are higher such as when obtaining care from private hospitals or residing far from the treatment Centre. This implies that the gender bias observed is an interplay of multiple social and economic factors. The researchers noted that the first step in solving any problem is to first recognise it, which this study does. To overcome the bias, joint efforts are needed towards bringing about a change in the mindset of the population as well as decreasing the cost of treatment borne by patients, especially for girl children. "We will have to use education as a tool to do away with the patriarchal mind set of society. From our data, we believe that if free treatment is provided for cancer to girl children, it will help in reducing the sex disparity in seeking care for cancer," Bakhshi added. Goldman Sachs thinks it could fall even further as soon as the second quarter. On Tuesday, Goldman lowered its second quarter 2020 outlook for the international benchmark, <a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/commodities/oil-price">Brent crude</a>, to $20 per barrel from $30, a 32% decline from where it traded midday at $29.40 per barrel. It's the <a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/commodities/news/oil-price-crash-20-dollars-goldman-sachs-forecast-opec-coronavirus-2020-3-1028976234">second time the firm has slashed its forecast in two weeks</a>.The lowered estimate comes amid the coronavirus pandemic, as the number of cases of COVID-19, the illness caused by the virus, increases. "COVID-19 is driving second-order effects in both commodity and equity markets that are creating outcomes which far exceeded our negative views from last month," wrote Goldman Sachs analyst Jeffrey Currie in a Tuesday note.Demand losses across commodities are now "unprecedented," Currie said. Oil use is down as much as 8 million barrels per day amid the coronavirus outbreak, which has greatly slowed global travel and other activities, according to the firm. "The implications of lower oil prices is far reaching, driving down the input costs of agriculture and many other goods while quarantines will further hit restaurant and cafe demand for livestock and softs," Currie wrote. Going forward, Currie expects that both equity and commodity prices will rebound once the contagion stabilizes. Equities will revert back to normal faster, however, as they're forward looking whereas commodity markets "are spot assets and must clear the surpluses developing today from weak demand and rising supply."And, there is at least one silver lining to the shake-up the current shock is spurring in oil, Currie said.
