<ul><li>Last week, Jio increased its calling tariffs by 6 paise per minute. </li><li>India Ratings says that the industry’s average revenue per user (ARPU) will go up by 15-18% after Jio’s price hike. </li><li>Jio’s data tariffs are 25-30% cheaper than that of Airtel and Voda-Idea. </li><li>Jio is a net payer of IUC charges, whereas Voda-Idea and Airtel are net-receivers of IUC receipts--as calls originate from Jio and land on other networks. </li></ul> It had to happen one day. But Reliance Jio’s move to increase tariffs came sooner than expected. Even as Jio, Vodafone Idea and Airtel are teasing each other over it on social media, and thousands are trolling Mukesh Ambani for ‘breaking his free’ promise---it is good news for the industry. At least that is what India Ratings believes. Jio charging its customers 6 paise per minute on its ‘free’ calling package—can help increase the rising margins of the industry. The sector’s average revenue per user will go up by ₹9, and in general increase by 15-18% according to the rating agency. Like Jio says in its tweet, this amount will be going to Vodafone Idea and Airtel as Jio can no longer get away without paying telecom department’s mandatory inter-connection (IUC) charges. This is the charge paid to a network which is receiving calls, by the network from where a call originates. In an ideal situation, the amount all networks pay each other should balance out—considering their subscriber number is around the same. However, that is not to be. Jio has the most to lose. The offnet minutes of usage is 64% for Jio, while it is at 41% for Voda-Idea and 45% for Airtel. “Also, of the total offnet voice traffic, net incoming minutes as a proportion of total offnet minutes stands at negative 29% for R-Jio whereas the same is 9% and 19% for Airtel and Voda-Idea respectively, implying that network voice traffic imbalance is significantly higher for R-Jio compared with peers. Hence, R-Jio remains a net-payer of IUC expenses, whereas Voda-Idea and Airtel are net-receivers of IUC receipts,” says India Ratings. Basically, calls originate from Jio and land on other networks. Jio users continue to keep other network SIMs It means that more people are using Jio SIMs for its cheap data plans, and also for making the ‘free’ calls it offers. It makes sense as Jio’s data tariffs are 25-30% cheaper than that of Airtel and Voda-Idea. Yet, users have not given up their basic SIMs which belonged to other networks, and continue to exist. These numbers are ‘primary’ phone numbers which are key to their bank accounts and other necessary identifications. And, few seem to believe that cheap tariff party will not continue to exist. All mixed with the ease of owning multiple SIMs have played against Jio. Had subscribers chosen to keep only Jio connections and get rid of others, they would have ported to it. Over the past few months, stock markets across the world have been hit by concerns of the US Fed tightening liquidity, rising inflation in the US/European Union, the Russia-Ukraine conflict, volatile crude and commodity prices. All these macro risks point to growth slowdown in US/EU, key markets for the Indian IT services industry – putting the basic growth assumptions into question. High inflation reduces the spending power of corporates, and hence the revenue growth potential of IT services companies, at risk, says the report. Temporary effect say IT sector analysts Despite the heightened concerns of Indian IT firms losing business, analysts are confident that the impact will be short term and temporary. “While the global macro fears are for real, we believe their impact on earnings will be minimal and temporary. The demand outlook continues to be super-bullish – by Gartner, ISG, Accenture and Infosys/HCL (in their recent analyst meets). On the first day of <keyword id="6354504" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Reliance-Jio">Reliance Jio</keyword>’s commercial launch, outlets did not have the time to breathe as crowds thronged shops to get their 4G SIM cards and avail the welcome offer. 
 
Retail shops went out of stock as thousands queued up outside Reliance Digital and Xpress outlets for free 4G SIMs from early morning. 
 Banking on this wave, <keyword id="3820" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Mukesh-Ambani">Mukesh Ambani</keyword> may extend his welcome offer beyond January 01, 2017, which will also help him in extending the consumer base and shoot up volumes. 
 If this happens, Reliance Jio’s rivals <keyword id="6354287" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Bharti-Airtel">Bharti Airtel</keyword>, <keyword id="15492" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Vodafone">Vodafone</keyword> India and <keyword id="6354924" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Idea-Cellular">Idea Cellular</keyword> will have to face tough time and announce attractive plans to retain their loyal customers. 
 
As per industry experts, it is likely that other telecom operators will also slash data and voice call rates. 
 
Ambani, during his AGM, had announced free voice calls for life. 
 
"Its free voice calls and dirt cheap data tariffs offer might not seem sustainable in the long run, but one mustn't forget that Jio derives its strength from RIL's balance sheet, and can easily treat its pricing model as a business development cost to poach quality customers from incumbents over a period of time," an analyst told ET. 
 
Ex-Airtel CEO Sanjay Kapoor told ET Jio's future tariff strategy "is contingent on how many quality customers it acquires by January 1" and how soon it's able to sort out traffic imbalances and reduce potential interconnect payouts to incumbents.

Reliance Jio may extend its free welcome offer as crowds go into frenzy

<ul><li>Reliance Jio is asking TRAI to either reduce or remove Interconnect Usage Charges (IUC). </li><li>TRAI had initially planned to remove IUC charges from January 1, 2020 under the Bill and Keep (BAK) regime. </li><li>Airtel and Vodafone Idea were against the move, citing huge costs involved in allowing incoming calls from the Jio network.</li></ul> Reliance Jio approached the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) to either reduce or remove Interconnect Usage Charges (IUC). Currently, IUC is charged at 6 paise per minute by the operator on whose network the calls terminate. In October, Reliance Jio announced that it will start charging 6 paise per minute for calls that are made to other networks. This change was made on packs which promised complete free calling earlier. Jio-to-Jio calls however continued to remain free. At the time, Jio noted that this charge would be levied until TRAI removes IUC charges. TRAI had initially planned to remove IUC charges from January 1, 2020 under the Bill and Keep (BAK) regime. However, incumbent operators Airtel and Vodafone Idea were against the move, citing huge costs involved in allowing incoming calls from the Jio network. Last week, TRAI held an open discussion on “Review of Interconnection Usage Charges”. Jio’s representative at the discussion held that since voice calling symmetry has been achieved between Jio and the incumbent operators, there was no need to levy IUC charges anymore. The company <a href="https://www.moneycontrol.com/news/business/jio-urges-trai-for-removal-or-reduction-of-iuc-charges-4645571.html">held</a> that the BAK regime should be implemented as planned from January 1, 2020. The implementation of this regime would bring down IUC charges to zero. Airtel and Vodafone Idea opposed this argument and demanded that IUC charges of 6 paise per minute should be levied for the next three years at least. Reliance Jio alleged that Airtel and Vodafone Idea were diverting their incoming voice call traffic to 2G or 3G networks to inflate their voice call costs. This could hold some merit as we’ve experienced that incoming voice calls on Airtel’s network are routed via 2G, which puts the Jio 4G network on pause temporarily even on a compatible dual 4G VoLTE smartphone. Airtel however denied these allegations. Vodafone Idea, on its part, did not expressly deny this and stated that subscribers were free to port out of their network. Reliance Jio asks TRAI to either reduce or remove IUC charges

New Delhi, <keyword id="6354287" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="bharti-airtel">Bharti Airtel</keyword> CEO Gopal Vittal on Wednesday wished better days for rival Vodafone <keyword id="41511" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="idea">Idea</keyword>, saying the company's existence is critical for India to remain a three-private player market that could bring investments, prevent job losses and restore the reputation of the struggling industry. "I think Vodafone Idea will remain and I wish it thrives... it is important that India remains a three-player market as that is good from all perspectives, (as in), investments, jobs and reputation," Vittal said on a post-earnings call Airtel reported a consolidated net loss of Rs 1,035 crore in the December quarter, stung by one-time expenses relating to statutory dues and write-downs on 3G gear, besides higher finance costs. But its India mobile services business continued to grow, with ARPUs up 5.3 per cent sequentially at Rs 135. On Wednesday, <keyword id="137231" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Vodafone-group">Vodafone Group</keyword> Plc head Nick Read once again stressed the critical state of Vodafone Idea, and said the UK major would not inject any fresh capital into its Indian telecom JV with the <keyword id="44373" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Aditya-Birla-Group">Aditya Birla Group</keyword> and the outlook on the JV is "very critical". On the implications for Airtel, if Vodafone Idea shuts down, the Airtel CEO said that the matter would hinge on how the Supreme Court responds to the telcos' plea for negotiating the terms of AGR-related payments with the government. Vittal also said the company would not bid at the current prices in 5G spectrum auction. "The reserve price on the spectrum that is being put on the block which TRAI recommended... we have to see what the government does, but what TRAI had recommended on the 3.5 gigahertz band is close to Rs 49,000 or 50,000 crore for 100 megahertz of spectrum ... 5G requires large blocks of spectrum, as you know. So at 100 megahertz, Rs 50,000 crore is just something that we can't afford and it's... we believe it's too high priced. So we will not pick it up at those prices." The CEO told the analysts that ARPUs need to grow to at least Rs 300 (from current levels) to ensure "reasonable return on capital," saying that even if ARPU rises to Rs 200, post the last tariff revision (in December 2019) in the fiscal fourth quarter, "it would barely be head above water in terms of return on capital employed as tariffs remain exorbitantly low". However, according to a CLSA report, Airtel's average revenue per user might jump to only ₹181 by the end of FY 2022 at a compounded annual growth rate of 19%. "Such ARPU stabilisation would hinge on the quantum of 2G users naturally going to 4G, acceleration in the postpaid (user base) and a material change in tariffs". Airtel's strong 4G customer adds were partly a result of <keyword id="2003276" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Jio">Jio</keyword>'s decision last October to charge users for voice calls to other telco networks, Vittal said, adding that "the move led to a surge of customers consolidating the second SIM and switching to Airtel". The company added 21 million 4G users in Q3. "We believe that industry ARPU needs to move to Rs 300 in the long term, this will provide the right balance between customer escalation and sector investments. The ARPU announcement on the back of tariff hikes, data net and overall upgrading of customers ensure that we continued the sequential revenue growth trend that we have been witnessing in the past few quarters. This quarter there has been a reporting change on account of reorganization of our optic fibre operations, which have been transferred to a wholly-owned subsidiary, he said. Vittal declined to comment on the timing of the next round of price hikes, but said they would "reassess whether the market can absorb another increase in FY21 as the situation is an evolving one". Bharti Airtel's CEO wants Vodafone-Idea to survive and stay on

New Delhi, Apr 3 () Bharti Airtel and Reliance Jio will continue to gain market share at the cost of Vodafone Idea's "worsened" financial health that may deteriorate further in the wake of the AGR judgment, Axis Capital said in a note on Friday. Axis Capital said it has trimmed its revenue estimates for wireless telcos. This is because muted subscriber additions as well as hit in 2G/3G conversions to 4G SIMs on account of the lockdown and a possible extension of certain curbs, could partially impact revenue growth that was expected in coming months from the tariff hike in December 2019. "We cut FY21/22E (estimates) revenue of wireless providers by 1-6 per cent and EBITDA (Earnings before Interest, Taxes, Depreciation and Amortisation) margin by 20-100 bps (basis points," Axis Capital said in the telecom sector report. It said that while the tariff hikes undertaken by companies in December 2019 is likely to play out in nine months of calender year 2020 as subscribers come for recharge, the floor pricing may be delayed due to the lockdown. As per the Supreme Court judgment, incumbent telcos have to make full payment of Adjusted Gross Revenue (AGR) dues including interest, penalty and interest on penalty, it said noting that Bharti Airtel appeared better placed to make the payment, given the recent fund raise. Introduction of floor pricing and cut in levies to ensure that market continues to have four players, can further benefit the industry including Airtel, Reliance Jio, it said. "However, floor pricing may be delayed due to the lockdown. Also, due to economic stress from the lockdown, demand for relief by other industries may increase, which could impact Vodafone Idea's prospects of getting relief from the government," it said. Axis Capital said Airtel and RJio will continue to gain market share at the cost of Vodafone Idea due to latter's worsened financial health which may deteriorate further after the AGR judgment. It noted that telcos had introduced new packs for customers for work from home, had engaged in ensuring service continuity and had rolled out relief offers to low income customers. In its note on Friday, Axis Capital asserted that telcos' subscriber addition will be hit, as the lockdown in wake of COVID-19 will sharply pull down subscriber acquisition, given that people mostly remained at home and shops were closed. "COAI expects subscriber addition of less than 1 million in March 2020 versus average of 3 million per month. Subscriber addition to be hit for most of Q1FY21 due to 21-day lockdown and possibility of restrictions/ partial restrictions getting extended," Axis Capital said. Also, conversion from 2G/3G to 4G may also be hit as it requires new SIM, "which is difficult in a lockdown", it said. "These may partially impact revenue growth that was expected in 9MCY20 (nine months of calender year 2020) from the tariff hike taken in December 2019. Accordingly, we have trimmed our revenue estimates for wireless telcos," Axis Capital said. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on March 24, had announced a complete lockdown of the entire country for 21 days in an unprecedented move to try halt the spread of coronavirus, shortly after which the Centre said road, rail and air services will remain suspended during this period.
