(Reuters) - President Donald Trump on Sunday will interview acting national security adviser Keith Kellogg and three other candidates to fill the vacancy left by the firing of Michael Flynn, the White House said on Saturday.</p><p>Former U.S. ambassador to the United Nations John Bolton, Lieutenant General H.R. McMaster and Lieutenant General Robert Caslen are also being interviewed for the top national security position, White House spokesman Sean Spicer told reporters at Trump's Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida.</p><p>Trump, who has been searching for a new national security adviser for about a week, could add a couple more candidates to the list, Spicer said.</p><p>Retired general and former CIA chief David Petraeus is no longer a candidate, Spicer said.</p><p>The retired four-star general, who resigned as head of the CIA in 2012 after it was revealed he was having an affair with his biographer, had been on a short list for the job after Flynn was let go.</p><p>Spicer said Trump's finalists include Kellogg, Bolton, Caslen, who is the superintendent of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, and McMaster, who holds a senior post with the U.S. Army Training and Doctrine Command.</p><p>Former U.S. National Security Agency head Keith Alexander, and former Army chief of staff Ray Odierno were also thought to be in contention for the job.</p><p>Flynn, who was Trump's first national security adviser, stepped down after revelations that he had discussed U.S. sanctions on Russia with the Russian ambassador to the United States before Trump took office and misled Vice President Mike Pence about the conversations.</p><p>Finding a replacement has been a challenge for Trump.</p><p>Retired Vice Admiral Robert Harward, the president's first choice to take over for Flynn, turned down the offer, citing family and financial reasons.</p><p>A source familiar with the matter said Petraeus, like Harward, wanted control over staffing decisions within the NSC, and Trump was reluctant to grant that authority.</p><p>Trump is spending the weekend at his properties in Florida.</p><p>"Will be having many meetings this weekend at The Southern White House," he wrote in a tweet on Saturday morning.</p><p>The president spent the morning at the Trump International Golf Club before returning to his Mar-a-Lago resort. A White House official said he would be having meetings and might play golf.</p><p>The rocky start for the NSC under Trump has had an impact in other areas.</p><p>The White House dismissed Craig Deare, the NSC's senior director for Western Hemisphere Affairs, after receiving reports that he had criticized the president and top aides, Politico reported. Trump will interview four candidates for National Security Advisor on Sunday

<img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/5665a42e6bb3f7e02591ae98-2400/rtr3wlea.jpg" alt="North Korea" /><p class="source"><span>reuters</span></p><p>North Korea's launch of an intercontinental ballistic missile this week was condemned by the Pentagon, which <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/pentagon-north-korea-tested-an-icbm-that-weve-not-seen-before-2017-7" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">said</a> the missile was of a type "we've not seen before."</p><p>North Korean leader Kim Jong Un reveled in the successful test, saying his country would never abandon nuclear weapons while vowing to continue sending "<a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/north-korea-icbm-missile-test-2017-7" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">gift packages</a>" to Washington.</p><p>The US and South Korea responded by firing missiles into the South Korean waters to counter what the US Army called " North Korea's destabilizing and unlawful actions on July 4." (The US has flown bombers over the Korean Peninsula several times in recent months as well.)</p><p><span>As this period of contentious relations with North Korea drags on, the US is without an important component of its foreign police apparatus.</span></p><p><span>Among the numerous positions unfilled at the State Department on several jobs directly related to dealings with North Korea and northwest Asia.</span></p><p><span>"Nobody has been nominated to be ambassador to South Korea," Brian Klaas, a fellow at the London School of Economics, <a href="http://thehill.com/blogs/pundits-blog/foreign-policy/340661-north-korea-test-shows-need-for-strong-state-department" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">wrote in an op-ed</a> for The Hill. "Nobody has been nominated to be under secretary for arms control and international security affairs or assistant secretary for arms control, verification and compliance."</span></p><p><span>"No nominee has been submitted for assistant secretary for international security and nonproliferation affairs," Klaas writes, "or for assistant secretary for East Asian and Pacific affairs. They have little access to Tillerson and when they interact with their foreign counterparts it is clear they have no mandate or influence on U.S. policy," Ilan Goldenberg, a senior fellow at the Center for a New American Security, <a href="https://raddingtonreport.com/happens-united-states-no-state-department/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">wrote at the end of June</a>.</span></p><p><span>"The result is that Tillerson is relying almost exclusively on only two aides - his Chief of Staff Margaret Peterlin and Head of Policy Planning Brian Hook. Most of the department's expertise are going unused and the Secretary is not getting the best information," Goldenberg writes, adding that the two aides cannot be responsible for the entire world, creating "major bottlenecks" in the policymaking process.</span></p><p><span>Trump, who has not slacked in making judicial appointments, has picked up the pace with selecting nominees for other jobs, though many government departments, including the executive branch, <a href="http://www.cnbc.com/2017/06/29/trump-is-starting-to-hire-more-quickly--but-his-administration-is-still-thin.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">remain understaffed</a>. </span></p><p><span>Trump himself is to blame for this, Anne O'Connell, a University of California at Berkeley law professor, <a href="http://www.cnbc.com/2017/06/29/trump-is-starting-to-hire-more-quickly--but-his-administration-is-still-thin.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">told CNBC</a>, because he has required loyalty tests for nominees and multiple people to sign off on appointments.</span></p><p><span>In early June, the president blamed Democrats in Congress for the delay in appointments, <a href="https://www.usnews.com/news/politics/articles/2017-06-05/chuck-schumer-fires-back-at-trump-on-government-vacancies" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">saying</a> opposition legislators "are taking forever to approve my people, including Ambassadors." </span><span>Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer responded in kind, <a href="https://www.usnews.com/news/politics/articles/2017-06-05/chuck-schumer-fires-back-at-trump-on-government-vacancies" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">saying</a> Trump "needs only to look in the mirror" to find the person responsible for the vacancies.</span></p><p><span></span></p><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/51fbcb45eab8ea6436000000-2400/ap090309042506.jpg" alt="State Department building" /><p class="source"><span>AP</span></p><p><span>The White House - which is weighing <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/state-department-pentagon-personnel-shortage-2017-4" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">eliminating</a> State Department jobs and cutting the foreign-policy budget - has also pinned the blame for unfilled State Department jobs on the department itself. Rex Tillerson still has a skeleton crew at the State Department to deal with North Korea

<p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">Dudley council officials say the ranking is bogus.<br /></span></p>
<p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">The chart, <a href="http://www.hdh.co.uk/uploads/properties/HDH_Vitality_Index3.pdf" target="_blank"><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">HDH's</span> Vitality Index</a>, takes into consideration the value and prestige of shops on each street, rather than just the number of transactions within them. This lets HDH compare small centres with fewer shops against bigger, busier high streets. A village high street with a handful of craft shops would score higher than a big Tesco, although the supermarket probably has a greater number of transactions and makes more money, for instance.  <br /></span></p>
<p>At the top of the chart is Westfield London, the mega-mall in Shepherd's Bush, home to 265 retailers. Apple, Anthropologie, and Burberry are among the brands on offer there. It was closely followed by two other high-end London retail areas, Chelsea and Knightsbridge.</p>
<p>But at the bottom of the ranking is Dudley: the West Midlands town scored low on all the parameters analyzed by HDH. These included the ratio of premium retailers to value or discount retailers. That ratio is regarded as an index of the faith that the retailers have in their location. It also looked at the vacancy rate. The more empty shops, the less appealing the location is.</p>

Twelve of its 52 units are vacant, according to <a href="http://www.thechurchillshoppingcentre.co.uk/stores.php">the centre's web site</a>. (It doesn't help that <a href="http://www.bbc.com/news/uk-england-birmingham-13790389">Dudley's retailers were once forced to board-up their storefronts</a> when the far-right English Defence League staged a march through the town - which devolved into a running battle with the police - in 2010.)</p>
<p>Controversially, HDH also considered the presence of "out-of-fashion" retail tenants, meaning shops whose brands damage the appeal of the location rather than enhance it. Jonathan De Mello, HDH's head of retail consultancy, explained it in this way: "A reduction in vacancy rates is not always positive if those vacant units are filled with what could be perceived to be 'out-of-fashion'". This measure ranks an area down if it has a high number of chains, betting shops and payday loan centers.</p>
<p>Judy Foster, Dudley Council's cabinet member for regeneration, told Business Insider that investments totalling "circa £200 million" are coming to Dudley's town centre. She also disputed the accuracy of HDH's ranking:</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;">If <span>companies took the time to visit Dudley instead of writing reports in their offices using unreliable and out of date information, then the regeneration and undeniable buzz in Dudley town centre would be unmistakable.  Maybe then at some in the future credible information could be released to support town centres, rather than commercially damaging them</span>.</p>
<p>We took a tour of Dudley via Google Street View to see why HDH ranked Dudley so poorly.</p>

<img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/590b80125124c9dc5ff6ec50-800/el-chapo-to-remain-in-solitary-confinement-us-judge-rules-2017-5.jpg" alt="Mexico's top drug lord Joaquin " /><p class="source"><span>Thomson Reuters</span></p><p class="caption">Mexican drug lord Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman arrives in New York, January 19, 2017, after his extradition from Mexico.</p><p>In the months since former Sinaloa cartel chief Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman was <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/mexico-extradites-joaquin-el-chapo-guzman-sinaloa-cartel-kingpin-2017-1" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">turned over to US authorities</a>, Mexico has seen spiraling violence in the territory controlled by his cartel, as <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/internal-fighting-in-sinaloa-cartel-attack-on-el-chapo-sons-in-mexico-2017-2" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">rivals, underlings, and siblings</a> compete to assume control - a battle that started in the months after Guzman's January 2016 arrest.</p><p>In response to rippling violence, the Mexican government appears to have stepped up its efforts to capture or kill Sinaloa cartel lieutenants and members of other groups vying for control.</p><p>The most recent major apprehension came in early May, when Mexican authorities <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/mexico-captures-cartel-leader-opposed-to-el-chapos-gang-2017-5" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">arrested</a> Damaso Lopez Nuñez, 51, a <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/mexican-government-sinaloa-cartel-cooperation" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">longtime confidant of Guzman</a> who, in recent months, is believed to have <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/internal-fighting-in-sinaloa-cartel-attack-on-el-chapo-sons-in-mexico-2017-2" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">mounted a violent campaign</a> to assume control of the Sinaloa organization.</p><p><span>"(Lopez) is considered one of the main drug traffickers and generators of violence in Sinaloa and the south of the Baja California peninsula," Omar Garcia, head of the Criminal Investigation Agency, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/mexico-captures-cartel-leader-opposed-to-el-chapos-gang-2017-5" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">told</a> a news conference after the arrest on May 3.</span></p><p><span>Lopez was arrested in Anzures, an upscale area of Mexico City, while an associate, Victor Geovanny Gonzalez Sepulveda, a suspected financial operative for Lopez, <a href="http://www.animalpolitico.com/2017/05/detienen-damaso-lopez-cartel-sinaloa/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">was detained</a> nearby. </span></p><p><span>In the days prior to his arrest, Lopez - a former security official who studied law and is known as "El Licenciado" or "El Lic," a title commonly used for lawyers - was reportedly seen in hotels and restaurants around Polanco, one of the most exclusive areas in Mexico City.</span></p><p><span></span></p><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/5909e5f4fcd8eb5e288b4584-2400/2017-05-02t154503z1lynxmped4111krtroptp4mexico-drugs.jpg" alt="Damaso Lopez" /><p class="source"><span>Carlos Jasso/Reuters</span></p><p class="caption">Accused drug kingpin Damaso Lopez is escorted by police in Mexico City on May 2, 2017.</p><p><span>Mexican officials <a href="http://internacional.elpais.com/internacional/2017/05/02/mexico/1493731336_339605.html?id_externo_rsoc=TW_CM" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">said</a> Lopez was seeking an "alliance with another criminal organization," purportedly the Jalisco New Generation cartel, a group that formed from a faction of the Sinaloa cartel and has <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/r-carnage-and-corruption-upstart-mexican-cartels-path-to-top-2016-10" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">quickly risen to the top</a> of Mexico's narco hierarchy.</span></p><p><span>"This arrest reduces the possibility of an alliance that the detainee was seeking with another organized crime group that operates in several states of the country," Garcia said.</span></p><p><span>Several factions of the Sinaloa cartel - Lopez and his son, Damaso Lopez Serrano, aka "El Mini Lic," on one side; Guzman's sons and Ismael "El Mayo" Zambada on another - as well as the Jalisco New Generation cartel and the Beltran Leyva Organization (a <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/the-history-of-el-chapo-guzman-sinaloa-cartel-chief-drug-lord-2017-1" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">one-time ally turned rival</a> of the Sinaloa cartel) are now among those thought to be fighting for control of Sinaloa cartel territory, much of it along the country's west coast.</span></p><p><span>The feud is believed to be related to a <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/mexico-fighting-between-sinaloa-cartel-jalisco-cartel-getting-worse-2016-10" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">September 30 ambush</a> in Culiacan, the capital of Sinaloa state, that left five Mexican soldiers dead and was reportedly an attempt by Guzman's sons to free a captured cartel figure, which they denied at the time.</span></p><p><span></span></p><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/5909e64cfcd8ebe3028b488a-2400/2017-05-02t154503z1lynxmped4111prtroptp4mexico-drugs.jpg" alt="Damaso Lopez cops" /><p class="source"><span>Henry Romero/Reuters</span></p><p class="caption">Police officers stand outside the location where accused drug kingpin Damaso Lopez was arrested.</p><p><span>In the months since, a number of people tied to or members of each of those groups have been arrested or killed.</span></p><p><span>In mid-October, Cristan Espinoza Rueda, aka "El 300," purportedly the top hit man for Guzman's <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/el-chapo-guzman-son-kidnapped-in-mexico-cartel-war-2016-8" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">oldest son, Ivan,</a> was caught in <a href="http://www.borderlandbeat.com/2016/10/sinaloa-mexican-navy-nabs-el-300.html?spref=tw" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">a pre-dawn raid</a> in Culiacan with weapons only permitted for military use. </span></p><p><span>In December, Alfredo Beltran Guzman, a nephew of "El Chapo" Guzman thought to be the leader of the BLO, was <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/alfredo-beltran-guzman-beltran-leyva-sinaloa-cartel-fighting-in-mexico-2016-12" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">arrested in Guadalajara</a>.</span></p><p><span>In January, Mexican federal forces <a href="http://www.frontera.info/EdicionEnLinea/Notas/Nacional/01022016/1050539-Cae-presunto-lider-del-cartel-de-los-Beltran-Leyva.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">captured</a> the alleged leader of the BLO in north-central Mexico, Francisco Javier Hernandez Garcia, aka "El 2000," in Sinaloa state.</span></p><p><span>That same month, Baja California police <a href="http://www.proceso.com.mx/469767/cae-en-tijuana-chucky-lugarteniente-alianza-cartel-jalisco-cartel-arellano" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">arrested</a> Juan Carlos Hernandez Silva, aka "El Chucky," who was identified as a deputy in the Tijuana New Generation cartel, a hybrid organization formed by the CJNG and remnants of the Arrellano Felix organization <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/tijuana-cartel-violence-2016-11" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">to challenge the Sinaloa cartel for control of Tijuana</a>.</span></p><p><span>In February, Mexican marines gunned down another BLO leader in Nayarit, mowing him and seven associates down <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/mexico-helicopter-kills-cartel-kingpin-amid-cartel-conflict-2017-2" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">with machine-gun fire from a helicopter</a>. That same month, the sister of "El Chapo" Guzman's first wife (and <a href="http://www.narcoviolencia.com.mx/2017/02/ejecutan-presunta-tia-de-los-chapitos.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">aunt</a> of his son Ivan) was killed in Guadalajara when a group of attackers opened fire on her Mercedes Benz.</span></p><p><span>In March, Julio Oscar Ortiz Vega, aka "El Kevin," who was reportedly freed in that September 30 ambush, <a href="https://twitter.com/chrstphr_woody/status/839344324349472772" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">was killed</a> in a small city west of Culiacan.</span><span>In early April, state police in Baja California <a href="http://zetatijuana.com/2017/04/11/capturan-otra-vez-a-el-chacal/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">caught</a> Alberto "N," aka "El Chacal," who was tied to the Tijuana New Generation cartel.</span></p><p><span>In mid-April, Francisco Javier Zazueta Rosales - chief assassin for "El Chapo" Guzman and right-hand man of one of Guzman's sons - <a href="http://www.cronica.com.mx/notas/2017/1019254.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">was killed</a> by the Mexican navy in Badiraguato, the Sinaloa state town <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/attack-on-el-chapo-guzmans-mothers-house-looming-cartel-war-2016-6" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">where Guzman was born and his mother still lives</a>. Zazueta, aka El Pancho Chimal, was believed to have organized the September 30 ambush.</span></p><p><span>This week, Mexican security forces in two neighborhoods south of Mexico City <a href="http://www.eluniversal.com.mx/articulo/nacion/politica/2017/05/8/ronda-el-mini-lic-por-la-cdmx-indica-pgr" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">arrested six people</a> tied to Damaso Lopez Serrano. Officials told El Universal that the operations - which seized weapons like rifles and rocket launchers - were both launched in pursuit of "El Mini Lic" himself.</span></p><p><span></span></p><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/589df45b6e09a868148b4e0c-2376/ap17038731541093.jpg" alt="Mexico Sinaloa state Culiacan shooting killings violence" /><p class="source"><span>(AP Photo/Rashide Frias)</span></p><p class="caption">A Mexican marine looks at the body of a gunman next to a vehicle after a gun fight in Culiacan, Mexico, February 7, 2017.</p><p>Mexico has targeted cartel leaders throughout its 10-year-long drug war, but recent months have seen the government zero in on members of the Sinaloa cartel and its rivals specifically.</p><p>"They're really intensifying their efforts on the Sinaloa cartel, because the Mexican government now sees the extradition of 'Chapo' Guzman as weakening the Sinaloa cartel," Mike Vigil, former chief of international operations for the US Drug Enforcement Administration, told Business Insider.</p><p>While the Sinaloa cartel is generally considered to be a horizontally organized operation run by groups with some degree of autonomy, Guzman's absence as <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/world/2017/may/02/mexico-captures-sinaloa-cartel-leader-el-chapo?CMP=share_btn_tw" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">a referee for disputes</a>, his sons' inability to assume his role, and the declining health of Guzman's partner, "El Mayo" Zambada, have prompted Mexican authorities to address looming instability.</p><p>"Mexico has refocused a lot of energy and efforts against the Sinaloa cartel because they feel that this a very vulnerable stage for for them, so they're going to attack," Vigil said.</p><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/5523dea46da811fe4db85d53-840/drug.png" alt="drug cartel jalisco new mexico" /><p class="source"><span>Screen grab</span></p><p>Mexico City appeared to be pursuing a "top-to-bottom dismantling" of cartel organizations, Vigil told Business Insider, breaking from the Kingpin Strategy that had security forces targeting the top-tier leadership, which has largely led to splintering of major cartels and in turn leading to more violence.</p><p>As with the Kingpin Strategy, increased arrests at all levels of criminal organizations may be met with greater turnover in cartel ranks, as operators rise to fill the vacancies left by those detained. Moreover, Mexican prisons have proven ill-equipped at isolating cartel members from their compatriots.</p><p>Guzman himself broke out of ostensibly high-security prisons in 2001 and 2015. A month before his killing, Sinaloa cartel member El Pancho Chimal <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/juan-esparragoza-moreno-el-azul-el-chapo-business-partner-jail-escape-2017-3" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">broke out of jail with the son of "El Mayo" Zambada</a> - both of them had obtained judicial authorization to remain in a lower-security facility.</p><p>Even inside jails, Mexican authorities seem to exercise little control. Mexican news site Milenio published video on Tuesday of a party hosted by a CJNG kingpin inside Puente Grande prison (the first jail "El Chapo" Guzman broke out of). "I'm the one who gives the orders here," he is <a href="http://www.milenio.com/policia/narco-reventon-fiesta-cartel_jalisco-presidio-penal-puente_grande-don_chelo-milenio_0_953304665.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">heard yelling</a>. "Ask what you want, I will give it to you."</p><p>The video prompted the state attorney general <a href="http://mexiconewsdaily.com/news/drug-lord-not-the-boss-at-jalisco-prison-ag/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">to say</a> that the kingpin has no privileges or control within the facility. Damaso Lopez, however, doesn't seem confident in Mexican prison authorities. On the ground, my marching orders for my territory were clearly communicated - I was to find the person who had my job at Coke and apply a 'one better mentality.' If my Coke counterpart had one display in a convenience store, I needed to have two. If they had 13 feet of shelf space in a supermarket aisle, then my goal was to have 14 feet. The concept was simple and galvanizing for an army of district sales managers, the competitive intensity was thrilling, and the ability to measure one's success on a daily basis was clear.</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;">"But along the way, a very important lesson emerged that I have never forgotten. In 1991, I was inspecting our execution in a key account and nodding my head in approval as we had secured 16 feet in a major supermarket aisle as compared to Coke's 12 feet. Then I looked to the left and saw 24 feet of bottled water. Bottled water? Who invited them to this fight?</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;">"Lesson learned: Sun Tzu was wise in saying, 'know thyself, know thy enemy, and you need not fear the results of a thousand battles.' However, being fixated on a single competitor can blind you to other disruptive entrants and substitute alternatives."</p>

<p style="padding-left: 30px;">"My sister, Sarah, and I sold clothing together at a store in East Hampton, New York called Springers that in the 1990's sold a mix of sweatshirts, t-shirts, Patagonia athletic wear, and high end fashion. The Patagonias were at the back of the store. I'd bust my hump running all over the store, and Sarah hung back at the high value Patagonias. I'd sell 5 items running around the store with the customer for a total of $100. Sarah, in contrast, knew everything about the Patagonias (wicking fabrics, etc.) and would close a single $200 item in 10 minutes.</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;">"This experience taught me the importance of order value and time allocation. I learned that given a common infrastructure (a set amount of space and employee time), if you can work smart on items with high order value and high margin, you will always be better off than working hard on low value, low margin items.</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;">"I also learned that study and expertise matter. I got the Patagonia catalogs and technical books, and I studied them and developed a concise pitch about why their fabrics and products were worth the premium."</p>

Although it began on a street grandly named Broadway of America, it was the smallest route in my hometown of Holdenville, Oklahoma: 28 houses with a penny a paper profit per day. When other routes came open next to mine, I talked my supervisor into letting me add them. Within five years my route grew from 28 papers to 156, and I had saved close to $200, which I hid in a hole under the floor in my closet. It was my first experience in the takeover field: expansion by acquisition. I learned other lessons, too. My first year as a paperboy, I found a wallet on the sidewalk. Inside it were the name and address of the owner. I delivered it to the man, and he gave me a dollar reward. It was a windfall. My mother, grandmother, and aunt were on the porch when I got home. They never looked at each other. They didn't have to. They were so much alike that their heads moved in unison, almost as if their heads were attached to one other by a string. They didn't respond as I'd expected or hoped about the news of finding the wallet and getting the reward. I pleaded my case over and over. Instead they sent me straight back to return the dollar to the man. </p>

Thankfully, the prices were usually rounded to the nearest quarter, but you had to do the math on the fly and very quickly. 'Two dogs, large Pepsi, a KitKat, and a popcorn' would be blurted out at me, and a sum total would have to be provided nearly instantly. '$6.50 please.' If I was lucky, I made a couple dollars a night in tips.</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span><span>"So what did I learn and how was this connected to what I would do later in life? First, I learned how to deal with pressure. At 14 years old, serving customers is stressful, but this stress was exceedingly magnified when the lines were long and the service was expected to be fast. During those 15 minutes we hustled and the energy was high. I discovered that I loved this feeling, and I would challenge myself to be the fastest server at the concession. A decade later, when I was being interviewed for a job on the trading floor of Goldman Sachs, I realized that the atmosphere felt strangely familiar. The noise, the yelling, the energy, all the men everywhere; it was like coming home."</span></span></p>

I responded to a job ad in a newspaper - to join the very same firm, ICI (Imperial Chemical Industries) - the biggest company in Europe at the time. The role was at the same Harrogate factory where I used to clean; but this time it was a chance to join the fast-track management scheme.</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span><span>"700 people applied for just two vacancies. I didn't quite make it into the final two, but was rather the third person they employed. I was told that I had scraped in by virtue of my personality and ability to get on with people. It was the summer between my freshman and sophomore year in college and I was working with injection molding machines that produced spatulas, beer mugs and huge trash bins. This wasn't the I Love Lucy chocolate factory job; it was hot and the pace was intense. I was a sensitive weakling! If I had been invited into the betting pool that night, I might have wagered against myself, too.</p>
<p class="p1" style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">"...I was a fish out of water. Not only was I not particularly tough, I was regularly assigned to <keyword id="11018" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Jobs">jobs</keyword> I wasn't prepared to do. The work was physical, demanding and required a great deal of focus. My coworkers could have been hard on me, but instead they took me in and taught me about teamwork. I learned how people bond around their roles on the line and establish camaraderie. Forget management, we worked hard for each other. This drive led me to double down and make sure there was no way I was going to fail.</span></p>
<p class="p1" style="padding-left: 30px;"><span>"...I made it through the summer, though I never fully fit in. One of the workers, who became a friend, called me 'college girl,' assuming I thought I knew something. Truth is, I mostly learned from her. Still, I got to be pretty good on that line and was often asked to step in as a substitute. I owe a lot to that job for helping to teach me what it means to 'put it on the line.' "</span></p>

We'd get in their non-police car and drive to the bad parts of town. They'd stop at a corner and point to a shady-looking liquor store across the street. My job was to go in and buy cigarettes. If the store carded me for being under 18 and then didn't sell to me as a result of my being underage, they were smart. If they didn't, the police gave them a fine, and put them on a list. A </span><em style="line-height: 1.5em;">bad</em><span style="line-height: 1.5em;"> list.</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 60px;">"At lunchtime, we'd hit McDonald's, where I'd pepper the policemen with questions about what their normal workdays looked like.</p>
<p style="padding-left: 60px;">"Throughout the day, they'd ask: 'You want to call it a day?' <span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">My response: 'No way!'</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 60px;">"After all, the city was paying me on commission - $5 a store for what was considered an assignment outside my normal work duties. This, I knew, could net me a big daily paycheck. <span>On my best day, I came home with $360. Seventy-two stores! I was <em>highly</em> motivated, apparently."</span></p>
<p>A few lessons she learned - eschew tradition, find flexibility at work, and have a personal passion for your work. </p>
