In a statement, the bank said the lender will shortly integrate its system with the railways ministry to operationalise the pension disbursement process. The mandate will give the bank access to around 50,000 retirees each year across 17 zonal offices and eight production units of the railways across the country. Debraj Saha, head (government business), Bandhan Bank, said, "Indian Railways is one of the largest employers in the country. This will help <keyword id="6379276" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="pensioners" source="Orion">pensioners</keyword> to get access to competitive rates offered by the bank and other products of the lender."

London, Feb 23 (AP) Drugmakers Sanofi and GlaxoSmithKline said Wednesday they will seek regulatory approval for a new COVID-19 vaccine after human trials showed it provided a high level of protection against the disease. Late-stage trials found that two doses of the vaccine were about 58% effective in preventing infection and 75% effective in preventing moderate to severe disease, the companies said in a statement. A separate study on the vaccine's use as a booster showed that it "induced a significant increase in neutralizing antibodies,'' they said. "The evolving epidemiology of COVID-19 demonstrates the need for a variety of vaccines,'' Roger Connor, president of GSK Vaccines, said in a statement. The Sanofi-GSK vaccine uses "a well-established approach that has been applied widely to prevent infection with other viruses including pandemic flu,'' he said. "We are confident that this vaccine can play an important role as we continue to address this pandemic and prepare for the post-pandemic period." The drugmakers said they plan to seek regulatory approval from both the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and the European Medicines Agency, which regulates drugs in the European Union. The companies had planned for their vaccine to be ready last year but early trials showed the vaccine produced an "insufficient" immune response in people over 60 because it didn't contain enough of the material that triggers the production of disease-fighting antibodies. Late-stage trials of the current formulation of the vaccine were conducted on 10,000 adults in the U.S., Asia, Africa and Latin America. The companies didn't provide a breakdown of the vaccine's effectiveness for different age groups. Full results from the study will be published later this year. Authorisation of the shot would bolster efforts to combat a pandemic that has already taken more than 5.9 million lives worldwide as the makers of existing vaccines struggle to produce enough doses to meet demand. Toronto, Feb 25 (AP) Canada has become the first country to authorize use of a plant-based COVID-19 vaccine. Canadian regulators said Thursday Medicago's two-dose vaccine can be given to adults ages 18 to 64, but said there's too little data on the shots in people 65 and older. The decision was based on a study of 24,000 adults that found the vaccine was 71% effective at preventing COVID-19 - although that was before the omicron variant emerged. Side effects were mild, including fever and fatigue. Medicago uses plants as living factories to grow virus-like particles, which mimic the spike protein that coats the coronavirus. The particles are removed from the plants' leaves and purified. Another ingredient, an immune-boosting chemical called an adjuvant that is made by British partner GlaxoSmithKline, is added to the shots. While numerous COVID-19 vaccines have been rolled out around the world, global health authorities are looking to additional candidates in hopes of increasing the worldwide supply. Quebec City-based Medicago is developing plant-based vaccines against multiple other diseases, and the COVID-19 vaccine may help spur more interest in this new method of medical manufacturing. India now has a fifth vaccine. Johnson & Johnson's single-dose COVID-19 shot gets government nod.

In a setback to <keyword id="149108" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Bharat-Biotech">Bharat Biotech</keyword>'s COVID-19 vaccine <keyword id="9485939" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="covaxin">Covaxin</keyword>, the <keyword id="6356255" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="us-food-and-drug-administration">US Food and Drug Administration</keyword> has "recommended" Ocugen Inc, the US partner of the Indian vaccine maker, to go for Biologics Licence Application (BLA) route with additional data, nixinghopes of <keyword id="9408526" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="emergency-use-authorisation">Emergency Use Authorisation</keyword>. Ocugen in a statement on Thursday announced that as recommended by theFDA,it will pursue submission of a biologics licence application (BLA) for Covaxin. BLA,is a "full approval" mechanism by the <keyword id="6354656" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="fda">FDA</keyword> for drugs and vaccines. "The company will no longer pursue an Emergency Use Authorization (EUA) for Covaxin. The FDA provided feedback to Ocugen regarding the Master File. The company had previously submitted and recommended that Ocugen pursue a BLA submission instead of an EUA application for its vaccine candidate and requested additional information and data," Ocugen said. The development may delay the Covaxin launch in the US, Ocugen said. Ocugen is in discussions with the FDA to understand the additional information required to support a BLA submission. The company anticipates that data from an additional clinical trial will be required to support the submission. "Although we were close to finalising our EUA application for submission, we received a recommendation from the FDA to pursue a BLA path. While this will extend our timelines, we are committed to bringing Covaxin to the US," Dr. Shankar Musunuri, Chairman of the Board, Chief Executive Officer and co-founder of Ocugen said. "This differentiated vaccine is a critical tool to include in our national arsenal given its potential to address the SARS-CoV-2 variants, including the delta variant, and given the unknowns about what will be needed to protect US population in the long term," he added. Ocugen recently announced that it secured exclusive rights to commercialise Covaxin in Canada and has initiated discussions with Health Canada for regulatory approval. US drug regulator rejects emergency use authorisation for India's Covaxin

In a major shift of narrative, the government has now not disapproved the <keyword id="962031" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="authorisation">authorisation</keyword> of <keyword id="149108" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Bharat-Biotech">Bharat Biotech</keyword>'s Covid vaccine to people below 18 years of age whereas earlier, it was approved for children above the age of 12 years by the Drugs Controller General of India (DCGI). A letter from the office of additional secretary at the <keyword id="83655" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Union-health-ministry">union health ministry</keyword> carrying a comparative factsheet for the two Covid vaccines approved for emergency authorisation revealed that the government has "not recommended" their authorisation to people below 18 years of age. The DCGI, after approving Bharat Biotech's <keyword id="9485939" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="covaxin">Covaxin</keyword> for EUA, had allowed its authorization to children above 12 years of age. The document of permission to the Hyderabad-based pharmaceutical firm signed by the DCGI clearly states that "active immunization against Corona Virus Disease (Covid-19) for age above 12 years when administered in two doses interval of day 0 and day 28". At the same time, another Corona vaccine, Covishield by <keyword id="95879" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Serum-Institute-of-India">Serum Institute of India</keyword> (SII), was permitted to people above 18 years of age, permission letter to the SII showed. However, when IANS approached CDSCO with the query upon this, the officials said that the provision was soon withdrawn and revised by the drug licensing authority. The sources privy to the development told IANS that this certain condition approved for Covaxin was flagged to the drug regulatory authority and soon it was rebuked. "We were flagged about the provision and soon it was revised with a condition that the vaccines would only be administered to beneficiaries above 18 years of age," a senior official said. Covaxin has been in the spotlight of controversy since it was recommended for restricted emergency use by the subject expert committee of CDSCO. It's approval for Covid immunization programme has drawn flak from public health advocacy groups, researchers, scientists and activists in the <keyword id="54611" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="domain">domain</keyword>. The concern with the Coxaxin largely remains on its approval without the data from phase III clinical trials which determine efficacy of the drug. So far, any data proving the vaccine's efficacy has not been published in the public domain, including any results of an interim analysis. Meanwhile, a series of allegations involving violation of various protocols of human clinical trials have been put forth by trial volunteers of Covaxin in Bhopal's People's Medical College and Hospital, one of the 26 clinical trial sites of the Bharat Biotech's vaccine's phase III trials. Trial participants in Bhopal, who, incidentally, are also victims of the 1984 gas tragedy, have alleged "severe violations" of the model code of conduct pertaining to trials including absence of consent and no follow-up on their health after developing adverse reactions post the first dose by a particular clinical trial site. Notably, a 45-year-old trial participant in Bhopal also died nine days after he got the first jab at the People's Hospital, on December 21. However, Bharat Biotech, in a statement, said that the death had been "thoroughly investigated" and was found "not related to vaccine or placebo". Covaxin: Government disapproves authorisation of Bharat Biotech's Covid vaccine to those below 18 years

In yet another immigration-friendly move, the <keyword id="10092361" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Biden-administration" source="Orion">Biden administration</keyword> has agreed to provide automatic work authorisation permits to spouses of H-1B visas holders, a step that would benefit thousands of Indian-American women. The settlement in this regard was reached by the Department of Homeland Security in a class-action lawsuit, which was filed by the <keyword id="620952" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="American-Immigration-Lawyers-Association" source="Orion">American Immigration Lawyers Association</keyword> (AILA) on behalf of immigrant spouses this summer. "This (H-4 visa holders) is a group that always met the regulatory test for automatic extension of EADs (employment authorisation documents), but the agency previously prohibited them from that benefit and forced them to wait for reauthorisation. People were suffering. They were losing their high-paying jobs for absolutely no legitimate reason causing harm to them and US businesses," Jon Wasden from AILA said. The litigation successfully achieved the reversal of the US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) policy that prohibited H-4 spouses from benefiting from the automatic extension of their employment authorisation during the pendency of stand-alone EAD applications. "Although this is a giant achievement, the parties' agreement will further result in a massive change in position for the USCIS, which now recognises that L-2 spouses enjoy automatic work authorisation incident to status, meaning these spouses of executive and managers will no longer have to apply for employment authorisation prior to working in the <keyword id="6356955" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="united-states" source="Orion">United States</keyword>," AILA said. "We are delighted to have reached this agreement, which includes relief for H-4 spouses, through our litigation efforts with Wasden Banias and Steven Brown. It is gratifying that the administration saw that settling the litigation for non-immigrant spouses was something that should be done, and done quickly," said Jesse Bless, AILA director of federal litigation. The Obama administration had given work authorisation to certain categories of spouses of <keyword id="6358066" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="H-1B-visa" source="Orion">H-1B visa</keyword> holders. With a view of listing the state-run insurance major <keyword id="6368369" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="life-insurance-corporation-of-india">Life Insurance Corporation of India</keyword> (<keyword id="6367143" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="LIC">LIC</keyword>), the government has proposed to raise the authorised capital of LIC to ₹25,000 crore. As per the amendments proposed under the Finance Bill 2021, the authorised <keyword id="445210" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="share-capital">share capital</keyword> of LIC shall be ₹25,000 crore divided into 2,500 crore shares of ₹10 each. The share capital of the <keyword id="6356315" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="corporation">corporation</keyword> shall consist of equity shares and preference shares, which may be fully paid-up or partly paid-up, said the Finance Bill. "The corporation may from time to time increase its issued share capital, with the previous approval of the <keyword id="6356303" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Centre">Centre</keyword>, whether by public issue or rights issue or preferential allotment or private placement or issue of bonus shares to existing members holding equity shares, or by issue of shares to employees pursuant to share based employee benefits schemes, or by issue of shares to life insurance policyholders of the Corporation, or otherwise," it said. However, the central government shall at all times, not less than 51 per cent of the issued equity share capital of the corporation and for five years after the IPO, the Centre will hold not less than seventy-five per cent.
