In August, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/us-inflation-economy-cpi-august-data-2023-9">inflation was up by 3.7%</a> compared to last year's figures during the same time, according to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics.As a result, nearly half of the youngsters surveyed said they are cutting back on eating out and opting to <a target="_blank" href="https://www.insider.com/pati-jinich-best-tips-beginner-chefs-2023-10">cook at home</a> instead. The young shoppers were the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/gen-z-holiday-spending-using-buy-now-pay-later-bnpl-2022-12">star spenders of the holiday season</a> in 2022, despite fears of debt and thinning budgets.Over half of them told Bank of America they don't have enough in their savings to <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/personal-finance/how-much-do-you-need-savings-retirement-emergency-fund">cover three months of expenses</a>, and less than 48% said they're fully or mostly financially independent.

<ul><li>OPEC's control over the supply of <keyword id="11896879" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="oil" source="Orion">oil</keyword> will catapult prices to $150 a barrel in 2023, JPMorgan said in a Monday note.</li><li>"We believe OPEC+ will defend the oil price with paced volume growth to keep inventories low," JPMorgan said.</li><li>The bank doesn't see the new Omicron variant of COVID-19 putting a dent into demand for oil.</li></ul>Rising <keyword id="11894590" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="oil-prices" source="Orion">oil prices</keyword> are here to stay according to <a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/stocks/jpm-stock">JPMorgan</a>, with the bank estimating that Brent prices could hit $150/bl in 2023 as the OPEC+ cartel control supply and defend higher prices.That means the Biden administrations release of strategic petroleum reserves will have little impact on the underlying price of oil, as was made clear in the initial price reaction in oil last week after the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/biden-releasing-oil-from-us-reserves-hope-combat-gas-price-spike-2021-11">government flooded the market with 50 million barrels.</a> The main driver behind oil prices is supply and demand. And while the Omicron COVID-19 variant put a dent into oil prices on Friday, with investors fearing that potential country lockdowns would reduce travel and therefore lower demand for oil, JPMorgan viewed that price move as an overreaction."We believe the market may overestimate the impacts of the recent emergence of the Omicron variant of COVID-19 on oil prices during the US holiday period," JPMorgan said in a Monday note, inferring that there will be little to no slowdown in holiday travels even as the Omicron variant spreads.With demand for oil likely to remain steady, supply will remain the key driver behind oil prices for years to come. And with OPEC+ "being firmly in the driver's seat for oil prices," JPMorgan thinks Brent will hit $120/bl in 2022, and could even overshoot to $150/bl in 2023, representing potential upside of as much as 100% from current levels."We believe OPEC+ will defend the oil price with paced volume growth to keep inventories low, <keyword id="11893875" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="markets" source="Orion">markets</keyword> in balance and reservoirs well managed," JPMorgan explained.Increased supply from US-based oil producers could help put downward pressure on oil prices, but the US oil rig count is <a href="https://ycharts.com/indicators/us_oil_rotary_rigs">at about half what it was in 2019,</a> and investments back into the sector have been slow ever since <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/power-line-why-oil-prices-went-negative-levels-of-detail-2020-4">oil prices briefly turned negative</a> amid the onset of the pandemic in 2020. That's a recipe for rising oil prices, at least until US oil production hits levels last seen before the pandemic.

<ul><li><keyword id="12521970" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="crude-oil-prices" source="Orion">Crude oil prices</keyword> plunged as much as 7% on Wednesday as fears of an economic recession surge.</li><li>Deutsche Bank is the latest Wall Street bank to estimate imminent recession odds at 50%.</li><li>The decline in <keyword id="11896879" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="oil" source="Orion">oil</keyword> comes as President Joe Biden announces a <keyword id="14264285" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="gas-tax-holiday" source="Orion">gas tax holiday</keyword> during the summer months. </li></ul><keyword id="12107782" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="crude-oil" source="Orion">Crude oil</keyword> prices plunged on Wednesday as investor fears of a coming recession continue to rise and as President Joe Biden's administration called on Congress to implement a summer gas tax holiday.<a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/commodities/oil-price?type=wti">WTI Crude</a> prices fell as much as 7% in Wednesday trades, falling to a low of $101.53 per barrel and hitting its lowest level since early May. WTI Crude's price decline from its March high of more than $130 per barrel now tops 22%.Deutsche Bank's Christian Sewing is the latest Wall Street bank CEO to estimate that <a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/news/stocks/global-economy-50-percent-recession-probability-deutsche-bank-ceo-2022-6">an economic recession is likely</a>, telling Bloomberg on Wednesday that chances of a global recession currently stand at 50%. Meanwhile, Citi's Kristin Bitterly said there's <a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/news/currencies/us-economy-recession-growing-risk-fed-inflation-interest-rates-citi-2022-6?utm_medium=ingest&amp;utm_source=markets">a 40% chance of an economic recession</a> going into 2023. Bank CEO says employees get a 2-week 'recharge period' at the end of December with more relaxed work schedules

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Americans are still shelling out cash for discretionary spending, despite concerns of a weakening consumer.</li><li>Total card spending is likely up 4.5% year-per-year over the past 3 months, Bank of America forecasted.</li></ul>American consumers are still spending, even as commentators fret over dwindling excess savings amassed over the course of the pandemic. Retail sales data for September is due out next Tuesday, October 17, and Bank of America analysts are forecasting another show of resilience by US consumers.Despite concerns of <a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/news/stocks/stock-market-outlook-investors-recession-consumer-spending-wall-street-banks-2023-7">weaker spending</a>, BofA says data doesn't seem show slowing discretionary purchases just yet, with total credit card and debit card spending per household up 0.7% year-over-year in September, according to data from the bank. Spending in core areas — which include gas, building materials, restaurants, and retail excluding autos — has increased 4.6% year-over-year from the months of May to August, the bank said in a note on Thursday. When accounting for inflation, core spending was likely up 6% during that time frame, economists said, which would put total core retail sales up 0.2% in September on a seasonally adjusted basis.That reflects softer spending compared to previous months, but it would mean household card spending was still up 4.5% year-over-year over the past three month period, the bank said, a sign that consumers are still swiping their cards. Total discretionary spending as a percentage of income has followed historical trends for this time of year in staying resilient, with those making between $50,000-$125,000 spending over 70% of income on discretionary purchases in September.<div type="image" title="Share of discretionary spending as percentage of income" height="1127" width="1189" msid="104380415" hostid="261" sizebytes="53090"></div>And total card spending in the week surrounding Labor day, a closely watched time for consumer spending, also increased this year, with the chart below depicting another sharp rise about a month after the holiday as well.The bank says there are two takeaways from it's September data:"First, there are no clear signs of cracks yet in consumer spending. Second, we saw a similarly outsized bump around July 4. If consumers were to continue to ramp up spending around holidays, that would bode well for the 4Q 2023 outlook, which will be heavily driven by holiday season spending."<div type="image" title="Total card spending around Labor Day" height="1172" width="1171" msid="104380417" hostid="261" sizebytes="77960"></div>BofA's spending data paints a promising picture of a consumer that's humming along despite an uncertain economic outlook. Yet, other experts have warned the strong spending trends could soon reverse, with inflation well-above the Fed's target and student loan payments having restarted at the beginning of this month. Those headwinds could wipe out excess savings stored up from the pandemic. According to a study from the San Francisco Fed, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/americans-excess-savings-consumer-spending-us-economy-fed-study-2023-8">Americans may have run out of their excess savings</a> at the end of last quarter.
