Aston Martin, owned by the billionaire Lawrence Stroll, ultimately <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bY2ZVolYSJM">snatched him up</a>.With new regulations set to take effect in 2026, Aston Martin is already a clear favorite to design a top-performing car. They said Amazon sees the special as another way to amass big audiences, as it has done with the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/amazon-nfl-thursday-night-football-advertising-strategy-new-brands-2023-9">NFL's "Thursday Night Football"</a> and other sports. The special has the potential to reach more than 200 million viewers, which is Prime Video's monthly reach, according to Amazon's most recent public disclosure.If it goes well, Amazon could repeat the approach with other big news events, one of the people close to the deal talks said. Those events could include the presidential inauguration or State of the Union address, this person predicted."It's a toe in the water for them in that they're trying to get beyond sports to other, seasonal special types of events," this person said. "There's news-adjacent programming they could do."Two of the people close to the deal talks said the election-night special was expected to be ad-free. No final decisions have been made, though. But Amazon and other tech-rooted streamers have seen how live programming, like comedy specials and awards shows, creates appointment viewing that can be highly attractive to advertisers. Advertisers, and especially marketers with time-sensitive product launches, have shown a willingness to pay high prices to reach large live audiences. Amazon this year <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/amazon-prime-video-ads-early-success-with-advertisers-2024-4">turned on ads in Prime Video</a>, gunning for the nearly $70 billion in annual TV ad spending.For Amazon, specifically, filmed entertainment and sports programming — part of Prime Video — also serves to keep people subscribing to its lucrative Prime service and get people to shop more on the platform. Prime Video's 2023 Black Friday NFL game, for example, showed QR codes during breaks to promote deals on the site."It fits in with their interest in disruptions and amassing big audiences," the second person close to the deal talks said. "They want to be in the big-event business."<h2 id="7f7a9c20-5ffc-43f3-a0df-b0f758efb495">News has been slow to shift to streaming</h2>Big champions of the election-night special within Amazon include Mike Hopkins, senior vice president of Prime Video and Amazon MGM Studios, and his powerful No. 2, Albert Cheng, vice president of Prime Video US. Hopkins has played a role in Prime Video's aggressive expansion into sports, which has created tension with some on the entertainment side who <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/jay-marine-leading-amazon-sports-ambitions-nba-rights-2024-3">see the sports investment coming at the expense of film and TV budgets</a>.If the deal goes through, the special would be produced by Jonathan Wald, a veteran TV news producer who executive-produced Williams' "11th Hour" on MSNBC and has lately focused on new news formats. He helped Don Lemon launch shows on social media, for example. Williams' reps at talent agency CAA have also been involved.While entertainment and sports have shifted to streaming, news has been slower to follow. Legacy broadcasters like NBC News and ABC News have invested in live-streamed content; CNN has planned a streaming subscription service, but it's had starts and stops.Tech companies with streaming services have generally steered clear of news — not surprisingly, given the high cost of operating a newsroom and how polarizing news can be.<a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/netflix-ceo-ted-sarandos-ads-sports-originals-change-mind-2024-9">Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos</a>, in a recent interview, rejected the idea of the streamer covering breaking news. Apple TV+ drifted into news-adjacent programming in 2020 with Jon Stewart, who hosted a weekly comedy news show. But Stewart walked away after two seasons, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.theringer.com/2024/6/13/24177435/jon-stewart-talks-apple-split-corporate-constraints-media-regression">saying</a> Apple increasingly wanted more oversight of the show's editorial direction.Amazon, for its part, wants to bring a down-the-middle presentation of election results hosted by Williams with a lineup of exclusive contributors. To lend a nonpartisan feel, the plan is that the presenters won't call the race and will point viewers to third-party content (which could include sites like CNN and NBC News that are available through Amazon Channels). The event would be broadcast from LA, allowing it to run late into the night.And while some elements would be familiar to a news audience, Amazon is expected to put its own twist on the potential presentation, similar to how it souped up the production of "Thursday Night Football" with <a target="_blank" href="https://www.theverge.com/2023/8/24/23842818/amazon-thursday-night-football-ai-streaming">on-screen overlays</a> that predict what might happen next.

It's also surrounded by four glass walls with two openings, allowing players to chase shots outside the enclosure.The larger court and the ability to play balls off or outside the four walls mean the game requires a higher level of athleticism than the more stationary pickleball. Pickleball courts can really be set up anywhere, with four courts fitting inside one tennis court. Padel courts' size and walls don't offer the same luxury.The scarcity of courts makes padel cost prohibitive. One spot near Kathleen's apartment runs about $38 per person for a 90-minute session.But padel's exclusivity could be both its biggest limitation and greatest asset. After all, a status symbol doesn't remain one if everyone has it.Sports can be restrictive. Paying for a country club is just as much about getting in as it is about keeping others out. Take golf, long a darling of the wealthy. The pandemic led to a surge in the sport, taking away some of its exclusive shine (and crowding courses).It's not a zero-sum game. High-end padel courts could remain while more affordable options become available. Running isn't just about fitness — these 8 products are shaping the new look of run clubs

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Venu, the new sports streaming bundle owned by Disney, Fox and WBD, will cost $43 a month when it launches this fall.</li><li>That's about what people thought it would cost.</li></ul>What would you pay for a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/espn-warner-disney-fox-launch-sports-streaming-platform-change-tv-2024-2">streaming service that gave you lots — but not all — of the biggest sports programming on TV</a>?The people behind Venu — a joint venture between Disney, Fox, and Warner Bros. Discover — think a bunch of you will pay $43 a month.That's the initial pricing for the bundle that's set to launch this fall, likely within weeks. It will include all-sports channels like ESPN and FS1, as well as traditional channels whose programming includes sports, like ABC, Fox and TNT.It's also not a surprise: When the service was first announced in February, the all-but-official indications were that it would <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/sports-streamer-new-nfl-games-who-will-subscribe-lachlan-murdoch-2024-3">likely be priced in the $40-to-$50 a month range</a>. <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/sports-streamer-disney-warner-fox-espn-how-much-streaming-cost-2024-2">Which made sense given the underlying economics</a>.Whether that pricing makes sense to consumers is a different question. That's because although the service will have a lot of sports, it won't have all the sports.Most crucially, it won't include lots of NFL games, since the package doesn't include CBS, which has the national rights to AFC games on Sundays. It's also missing NBC, which has the rights to the league's Sunday night game.And the reason those absences matter is because when it comes to sports on TV, there's the NFL, and then everything else: <a target="_blank" href="https://www.sportico.com/business/media/2024/nfl-posts-93-of-top-100-tv-broadcasts-2023-1234761753/">Not only are the league's games the most popular sports programming, they are the most popular programming on TV, period</a>. Take the NFL out of traditional TV and there's almost nothing left at this point.If you wanted a streaming service that had all of the NFL games on traditional TV, you'd need a service like <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/guides/streaming/youtube-tv">YouTube TV</a>, which currently costs $73 a month.Are there sports fans out there who don't want to pay $73 a month to stream (just about) everything on TV, but will pay $43 a month for lots of what's on TV?I can imagine that some of those people exist — particularly if they're more into sports like the NBA, which Venu will completely own (for at least a year — then <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/nba-wbd-lawsuit-comast-disney-amazon-negotiation-2024-7">things are up in the air since WBD is supposed to lose its NBA rights after that</a>). But it's hard for me to imagine there are many millions of them.The official line from the streamers is that this product is targeted at <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tv-youtube-decline-worst-quarter-ever-subscribers-2024-6">the increasing number of people who don't pay for a TV package at all </a>— either because they've cut the cord or because they never signed up for one.That's partly because the TV companies that are part of the bundle kind of believe that, and partly because they have a delicate relationship with pay TV distributors like Comcast.But privately, the programmers will tell you they're also not unhappy if someone who is paying for a traditional TV subscription drops that deal and goes to Venu instead. They get paid either way.One other note: Be mindful when you do see sign-up numbers after the service launches this fall that in streaming, sign-ups don't mean long-term customers. <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/netflix-wins-streaming-wars-this-chart-shows-why-2024-1">Every streamer that isn't Netflix is dealing with brutal churn</a> — customers will sign up for the service, then dip out once they've watched whatever they're interested in.And that could definitely be a problem for Venu, which is likely to attract people who are most interested in a single sport. And when that sport finishes up, they may very well unsubscribe. That's what appears to have happened to <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tv-youtube-decline-worst-quarter-ever-subscribers-2024-6">YouTube TV earlier this year when it reportedly lost customers for the first time ever</a>: The working theory is that NFL fans signed up for the service in the fall and then dropped it after the Super Bowl in February.

The new sports streaming bundle will cost $43 a month — but won't have some of TV's most popular sports

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Apple's sports app, launched in February, remains largely underwhelming.</li><li>The app offers limited sports scores and betting odds.</li></ul>Did you know <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/apple">Apple</a> has a <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://apps.apple.com/us/app/apple-sports/id6446788829">sports app</a>?If not, don't feel bad.I know a lot of people who watch sports, and I know a lot of people who spend time thinking about Apple and Apple products, and almost none of them ever mention the <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/apple-sports-app-is-here-2024-2">Apple Sports app</a>, which launched in February.And among the few people I know who do talk about the Apple Sports app, the conversation goes something like this: "WTF is with this app? Why does it exist?"That's because the Apple Sports app is the most bare-bones app you've ever seen. It has some — not all, not by a long shot — sports scores, and some sports betting odds, and… that's it. That's the whole thing.The reason some of us are talking about it today, again, is that Apple has put out a press release reminding us that the Apple Sports app exists, and that you'll be able to use it to find the scores of college football and <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/nfl-tv-ratings-playoffs-super-bowl-streaming-broadcast-americans-culture-2024-2">NFL games</a> this fall. It will also add some features like in-game stats.Again, this is all very weird. If you are at all interested in sports, you know that one of the things the internet is very, very good at is giving you sports scores. It's a core competency, going back to the Netscape days, along with porn and recipes.You can get scores via apps like <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/espn-streaming-disney-venu-sports-bundle-business-strategy-john-lasker-2024-8">ESPN's</a>, or from gambling apps, or you can just go the super basic route and Google them. It's almost harder to not get sports scores. So why does Apple have a scores app and why did it launch one in 2024?The standard line that accompanies any Apple product launch is that Apple isn't first in any category, but when it shows up, it does it best. But that's not the case here — it's not better than the lowest of low-end options like Google, and it doesn't have any of the bells and whistles you find in bulkier solutions like ESPN. And in many cases, it's far inferior since Apple's app didn't include sports like Europe's Champions League soccer tournament in the spring or the <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/paris-summer-olympics-2024">Paris Olympics</a> this summer.This has led professional Apple watchers to tie themselves in knots trying to explain the app's existence.In February, for instance, Jason Snell quoted <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://sixcolors.com/post/2024/02/apple-sports-a-free-iphone-app-to-get-you-the-score-fast/">Eddy Cue, </a>Apple's services boss and mega sports fan (look for him <a target="_blank" href="https://nymag.com/intelligencer/2017/06/eddy-cue-rihanna-yell-sit-down.html">courtside</a> at any Golden State Warriors game) explaining that the app was super-bare bones because Cue wanted a super-bare bones app. But that's the kind of rationale an Apple exec should use for painting his office walls — not pushing a $3 trillion company to roll out new software.Other rationales include Apple's slow push into <a target="_blank" href="https://spyglass.org/apple-sports/">TV sports licensing deals</a> or perhaps an <a target="_blank" href="https://spyglass.org/apple-sports-app/">interest in sports betting</a>.Those don't make sense to me, either. Whether Apple ends up splashing a lot of money on <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/formula-one-apple-mulls-two-billion-year-offer-rights-mls-2023-10">a big sports deal</a> (and no, Major League Soccer and a few Major League Baseball games don't count) has nothing to do with whether it has a sports score app, and Apple has already been doing <a target="_blank" href="https://www.si.com/media/2019/03/19/apple-sports-surveillance-room-notifications-big-moments-recommendation-technology">"push" alerts</a> for games it doesn't broadcast for years.And I don't think Apple wants any direct participation in <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/sports-betting-debt-bankruptcy-gambling-young-men-research-addiction-2024-8">sports betting</a>, which has very limited upside (for a company Apple's size) and some real downsides (for a company with Apple's squeaky-clean branding).So, that leaves us with… what? The fact that Apple has rolled out an app that few people seem to need isn't unheard of (Google "<a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/apple-introduces-a-social-network-ping-2010-9">iTunes Ping</a>", for starters.) It's also, to be clear, not remotely important for Apple — <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/apple-vision-pro-killer-app-six-months-later-2024-8">this is no Apple Vision Pro</a>. Amazon Great Indian Festival 2023 – Best deals on tablets

In 2019, it added a for-profit arm to raise money, but it said it would still focus on creating safe artificial general intelligence that benefits humanity.Then, OpenAI confirmed last month that the company would become an entirely <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/what-openai-needs-to-do-to-become-for-profit-altman-2024-9#">for-profit entity</a> over the next two years, ruffling some tech fans' feathers.Making that change could lead to government challenges to the process in court, Jill Horwitz, a professor at the University of California, Los Angeles School of Law, told Business Insider in an interview.Any assets that OpenAI holds right now under its nonprofit structure are "dedicated to a charitable purpose," Horwitz said. "Even if they're billions of dollars, as in OpenAI, they are perpetually dedicated to those purposes.""Assets that are legally required to be devoted to charitable purposes do not convert to for-profit purposes," Horwitz added. "In a sense, the for-profit needs to buy out the nonprofit interest."OpenAI is registered as a nonprofit in Delaware, a state where many nonprofits and for-profit companies choose to incorporate. But given OpenAI's assets and operations in California, that state's attorney general "has the power to ensure that charitable assets are not used for for-profit purposes," said Horwitz.And the Internal Revenue Service could also challenge the transition, Horwitz said."The regulators have a duty to protect the public interest, and the public has an interest in charitable assets remaining devoted to charitable ends," she said.Alexander Reid, a partner at the law firm BakerHostetler, sees OpenAI's transition to a fully for-profit company as a complex one that could be complicated further not only by regulators but also internally."If one director thinks the other directors are breaching the mission and making a decision that's not in the best interests of the nonprofit, they can sue" on behalf of the company, said Reid, who specializes in the regulation of nonprofit organizations.The biggest obstacle for OpenAI, Reid said, will be "getting clarity about how this helps" the company's mission "and getting unanimity and alignment on the board and with the regulators that this is the right thing to do."Reid said the SEC will focus on whether investors are informed of the risks, the IRS will look into whether tax laws are being followed, and the attorneys general will want to know if the transition for for-profit is fair, reasonable, and in the best interests of the nonprofit.But "if there's disagreement within the entity, then it's much harder for the regulators to approve it," he said.Still, the legal experts said that though OpenAI's transition to a for-profit company is a complicated one, it's doable.Reid said that it's possible OpenAI can get the transition done within the two-year timeframe."When things are this important, you can usually get the attention of the regulators in question," said Reid. "You can get the SEC and the IRS and the California attorney general and whoever else you might need to focus on the transaction and devote the resources to approving it in a way that more routine transactions can take longer."He continued, "When there's this much market interest, and the amounts are so significant, and the government's interest is so significant, I think you can expect things to move faster, potentially.""It really depends on what the regulators do," said Horwitz.OpenAI did not immediately respond to a request for comment.Earlier this year, <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/elon-musk-throws-down-gauntlet-sam-altman-openai-lawsuit-2024-3">Elon Musk</a>, a cofounder of OpenAI, sued the startup and two other cofounders, Sam Altman and Greg Brockman.
