But fret not - we've done enough pedal-testing to find the best of the bunch, no matter if you prefer ripping down singletrack mountain bike trails or a leisurely weekend jaunt downtown.</p><p>Though the term ebike refers to an entire industry, the bikes vary. Some are built for commuting while others are designed for mountain or road biking. Nearly all have one thing in common: pedal-assisted power. After freely pedaling two to three revolutions, most bike's motors kick in with a soft(ish) push, accelerating the bike and adding to the power output by the rider.</p><p>Depending on its selected level of assistance - some offer everything from minimal to extreme pedal-assistance - the bike's ultimate top speed may vary from roughly 8 to 10 miles per hour on up to around 30 miles per hour. Some models even feature a throttle option, giving riders the ability to ride the bike in a similar fashion as a motorcycle; just not as fast, of course. <ul><li>In conversation with Business Insider, Rohit Gothi, CEO, <keyword id="167885" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Hero-Cycles">Hero Cycles</keyword> said the company is betting big on e-bikes.</li><li>Hero launched <keyword id="3883061" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Lectro">Lectro</keyword> – its electric bikes – in a pilot phase last year, it has also come up with an upgraded version Lectro+.</li></ul>India’s electric vehicle revolution is now powered by one of India’s biggest legacy companies – Hero Cycles. Cycles in India are synonymous with the brand Hero Cycles and now, the company has added to its portfolio – e-bikes. <br /><br />Having been in the business since 1956, the company finally made the move to e-bikes and the CEO of Hero Cycles Rohit Gothi believes that e-bikes will grow faster than electric cars or scooters in India. <br /><br />Hero has ambitious goals to have a significant share in the global cycles market. In India, the company had <a href="https://auto.economictimes.indiatimes.com/news/two-wheelers/scooters-mopeds/hero-cycles-posts-15-y-o-y-sales-growth-in-fy19/66606679">reported </a>a 15% year-on-year growth for FY19, having sold 31 million units. <br /><br />Hero launched Lectro – its electric bikes – in a pilot phase last year, it has also come up with an upgraded version Lectro+. Gothi said that the response has been encouraging and they have also started commercially selling the e-bikes. The multi-speed geared variant of the e-bike has been launched at a price of ₹26,999 while the gearless one will come at ₹18,999. <br /><br />“The best part about e-bikes is that from the cost of maintenance perspective they are fairly cheap, unlike other e-initiatives like car or scooter. They don’t need large scale charging infrastructure so we can really scale up soon,” said Gothi.<br /><br />Reports about Hero Cycles looking to expand its operations to Europe have also been doing the rounds. And Gothi said that it’s not just Europe but their vision is to move to the world. “In order to have a global presence, you need good manufacturing capabilities. We already have a company in Europe called Avocet and we are seriously contemplating various options in the US and UK,” he said. <br /><br />Another growing trend in India are bike rental startups with startups like Mobycy, Cykul (acquired by Dr Reddys). While bike rental has gained popularity, there have also been a few misses. Chinese bike rental startup Ofo which had made an India entry had to withdraw its business from the country.<br /><br />“We have a sister company – Hexi – which is in the public bicycle sharing space. We have 4,000 cycles running on the road and campuses specifically Punjab Agriculture University. INTERVIEW: One of India's oldest bicycle makers wants to make electric bikes for the world

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Democrats want to provide tax credits for e-bike purchases and more funding for road safety. </li><li>Republicans largely aren't on board. </li></ul><p>The GOP is skeptical about a new push for cheaper e-bikes and safer bike infrastructure.</p><p>Democratic lawmakers recently <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/lawmakers-want-give-you-1500-buy-an-electric-bike-2023-3">re-introduced legislation</a> that would give Americans up to $1,500 off the purchase of an electric bicycle. Biking advocates are also pushing for the passage of <a href="https://raskin.house.gov/press-releases?id=0E7C61D6-5DD6-4135-965D-4CA043795B68" target="_blank" rel="noopener">a bill</a> that would unlock additional federal funds for road safety. </p><p>Republican lawmakers are far from on board. The E-BIKE Act faces an especially uphill battle on the Hill with a GOP-controlled House.  </p><p>"We're over-subsidizing electric vehicles as it is now," Sen. Susan Collins, a Maine Republican, told Insider in the Capitol this week. "I don't want to add to the unfairness of the current system where electric cars are free riders and don't pay to help maintain our roads and bridges through a gas tax or any kind of surcharge." </p><p>Sen. Mitt Romney, a Utah Republican, also dismissed subsidies for e-bikes and insisted that those who can't afford cars should take mass transit.</p><p>"I'm not going to spend money on buying e-bikes for people like me who have bought them — they're expensive," he said. "Removing automobile lanes to put in bike lanes is, in my opinion, the height of stupidity, it means more cars backing up, creating more emissions." </p><div type="image" title="House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., attends the Black The Blue Bike Tour event at the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in Washington on Thursday, May 13, 2021." height="640" width="1280" msid="99218275" hostid="261" sizebytes="142028"></div><p>Proponents of the tax credits say they could be more targeted towards low-income people to assuage concerns about subsidizing a luxury good for higher-income people. Mass transit often isn't an option for workers in suburban or rural communities, they say. </p><p>As the E-BIKE Act stands now, it would give Americans who earn up to $150,000, or up to $300,000 for joint tax filers, a refundable tax credit of 30% off the purchase of an e-bike, up to $1,500.</p><p>"Cycling is the most efficient form of human transportation ever devised. By burning calories instead of fossil fuels, we can make our communities healthier and more livable," Democratic Rep. Earl Blumenauer, who helped introduce the bill, <a href="https://panetta.house.gov/media/press-releases/reps-panetta-blumenauer-thompson-and-schiff-reintroduce-e-bike-act" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said in a statement</a>. "With an e-bike, anyone can be a bike commuter,  but the high cost discourages too many consumers."</p><p>The opposition to pro-bicycle policy has to be understood in the larger context of the culture war and conservative fears of Democrats' climate-friendly agenda, said Tim Carney, a senior fellow at the conservative American Enterprise Institute.</p><p>"There is a widespread suspicion on the right today that liberals want to take away their way of life," Carney told Insider. "This idea that the left knows there's only one right way to live, it's the way that we want to live and we're going to force it on you. That is in the background of the mind of every conservative, and so when they hear more bike lanes, they think, 'Okay, what is that code for?'"</p><p>Some GOP leaders have explicitly stoked fear about progressive efforts to make cities more livable. Last year, Republican Sen. Tom Cotton <a href="https://twitter.com/RealMacReport/status/1509906104561635330" target="_blank" rel="noopener">warned Fox News viewers</a> that Democrats "want to make you live in downtown areas, and high-rise buildings, and walk to work, or take the subway, or ride an electric scooter" and "make us all poor."</p><p>The Arkansas lawmaker added, "they want to get you out of your pickup truck, out of your SUV, out of your home in the suburbs where you can have a backyard with your kids."</p><p>But many conservatives support bike infrastructure and road safety, particularly when it's aimed at helping kids and families. Carney told attendees at the annual National Bike Summit in Washington last week to frame their efforts as building safer and more interconnected communities. </p><p>"What parents need now is the ability to set their kids free and have them be safe," Carney said. "Better bike safety, and better bike trails and lanes make life easier and more fun for your average suburban parents and for the kids. It also builds resilience and independence among kids, and makes us have fewer snowflake kids when they get to college."</p>

Mitt Romney calls new bike lanes 'the height of stupidity' as bicyclists press Congress to make roads safer and e-bikes cheaper

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Best Buy announced that it is selling electric <keyword id="11894924" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="transportation" source="Orion">transportation</keyword> products online and at select stores.</li><li>The selection includes e-bikes, mopeds, scooters, and accessories. </li><li>Electric transportation can range anywhere from $900-$5,000 depending on the model.</li></ul><p>Best Buy announced Wednesday that it will start selling a variety of electric transportation products online, and in select Best Buy locations starting in October. </p><p>The electronics retailer will carry a selection of e-bikes, mopeds, scooters, and accessories. The brands include Unagi, Bird, Segway-Ninebot, SUPER73, and SWFT according to a <a href="https://corporate.bestbuy.com/best-buy-rides-into-electric-transportation-with-e-bikes-scooters-mopeds-and-more/">press release</a>.</p><p>"There's been incredible innovation in the e-transportation space, and we know more customers are looking for ways to efficiently and sustainably commute," Frank Bedo, senior vice president at Best Buy said in a press release. "As we grow this selection, we look forward to helping customers find the right products to fit their needs and supporting them as they hit the road safely."</p><p>At the beginning of the pandemic, bicycle sales saw a stark increase as more people took to the outdoors for enjoyment amid strict lockdowns. Bike sales have since dropped 23% as of April 2021 compared to sales from last year, according to <a href="https://www.npd.com/news/blog/2021/switching-gears-are-we-finally-seeing-a-decline-in-bicycle-sales/">NPD.</a></p><p>However, electric bikes are projected to become a <a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/news/stocks/e-bike-market-worth-70-0-billion-by-2027-exclusive-report-by-marketsandmarkets-1029852496">$70 billion industry</a> by 2027. As more Americans push to find eco-friendly ways to get around, electric bikes are an increasingly more <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/electric-bikes-with-tech-features-2018-2">attractive price-point</a> than electric vehicles with prices of e-bikes ranging anywhere from <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/electric-bikes-with-tech-features-2018-2">$900-$5,000</a>. </p><p>Electric transportation products are available online right now, but customers can visit Best Buy stores in San Francisco, Los Angeles, Austin, Miami, Orlando, New York, and Puerto Rico starting October 10, <a href="https://www.theverge.com/2021/8/31/22650367/best-buy-electric-bike-scooter-bird-segway-ninebot-super73">The Verge reports.</a> For an additional $100, you can pay for a member of Best Buy's Geek Squad to come assemble your e-transportation right at home. </p>

<ul><li>Indian government will soon direct <keyword id="6354720" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="ola">Ola</keyword>, <keyword id="1042120" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Uber">Uber</keyword> to convert 40% of their fleet to <keyword id="6354973" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="electric-vehicles">electric vehicles</keyword> by 2026, says a report. </li><li>Ola has already taken the lead in the electric vehicle segment in India. </li><li>Uber has reportedly been experimenting with electric bikes in India. </li></ul>The Indian government is clearly not taking its Electric Vehicle mission lightly. The government has reportedly ordered ride-hailing giants Uber and Ola to convert 40% of their fleet to electric cars by 2026, according to a <a href="https://www.reuters.com/article/us-india-electric-autos-exclusives/exclusive-india-to-order-taxi-aggregators-like-uber-ola-to-go-electric-idUSKCN1T71DU">Reuters report.</a><br /><br />The report said that for both the companies to achieve this target, they will have to begin the conversion process by next year itself – “would need to start converting their fleet as early as next year to achieve 2.5% electrification by 2021, 5% by 2022, 10% by 2023 before hiking it to 40%,” the report said. <br /><br />Ola might take to this deadline much easily. It has already taken the lead in the electric vehicle segment. The homegrown unicorn has a company under the name Ola Electric Mobility which develops solutions to make electric mobility viable on a large scale. Ola plans to bring 1 million Electric Vehicles on to the Indian roads by 2021.<br /><br />The company has also been raising funds at a quick pace. So far, it has brought in investors like Ratan Tata and Arun Sarin, along with Tiger Global and Matrix India – all of whom are early investors in the parent company ANI Technologies. <br /><br />Meanwhile, Uber too is <a href="https://techcrunch.com/2019/05/09/uber-begins-trialing-e-bikes-and-bicycles-rides-in-india/">reportedly</a> experimenting with electric bicycles and bikes in India.
