The saga of <keyword id="19895037" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="bengaluru" source="keywords">Bengaluru</keyword>’s infrastructural challenges has been widely discussed for some time now. This year, the city is facing a severe <keyword id="6355017" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="water-shortage" source="Orion">water shortage</keyword> — a recurring problem that arises every few years. <keyword id="142764" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="urbanisation" source="Orion">Urbanisation</keyword>, depletion of green spaces such as water bodies and vegetation, and unpredictable weather patterns are cited as contributing factors by experts.<br /><br />The question arises: how much <keyword id="19921986" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="greenery" source="keywords">greenery</keyword> does the '<keyword id="64660" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="garden-city" source="Orion">garden city</keyword>' still possess? A recent study by <keyword id="19910180" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="iisc" source="keywords">IISc</keyword> indicates not much.<br /><br />Utilising a new public information system — BuiS (<keyword id="6355033" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="bangalore" source="Orion">Bangalore</keyword> Information System) and <keyword id="21015526" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="blis" source="keywords">BLIS</keyword> (Bangalore Lakes Information System) — researchers have revealed the detrimental impact of unplanned urbanisation on Bengaluru. Examining the city's development over the past five decades, scientists have made alarming discoveries.<br /><br />Bengaluru's urbanised area has expanded by a staggering 1055% since 1973, from a mere 8% to 93.3% in 2023. Consequently, there has been an 88% reduction in vegetation. Presently, Bengaluru has only 1.5 million trees for a population of 9.5 million, equating to just one tree for every seven individuals. This insufficient green cover fails to meet the daily respiratory carbon sequestration needs, as outlined by Professor TV Ramachandra from IISc's Centre for Ecological Sciences.<br /><br />The decline in greenery has resulted in heightened air pollution and temperatures. Additionally, the reduction in water bodies has exacerbated the city's water crisis. Bengaluru's water spread area has dwindled from 2,324 hectares in 1973 to a mere 696 hectares in 2023 due to unchecked urbanisation. Furthermore, 98% of lakes are encroached upon, with 90% being contaminated by untreated sewage and industrial waste, severely impacting groundwater replenishment.<br /><br />BuIS provides a valuable tool for researchers and policymakers, facilitating the assessment of Bengaluru's ecological health on a ward-wise basis, including tree distribution and water bodies. It also identifies ecologically sensitive zones.<br /><br />This study underscores the perils of unplanned urbanisation. Professor Ramachandra warns of a cascade effect, leading to pollution, resource disparities, traffic congestion, and increased reliance on fossil fuels.<br /><br />Bengaluru's plight serves as a cautionary tale for other rapidly growing cities. Prioritising sustainable development and environmental preservation is crucial to ensure a healthy and sustainable future.<br />

<ul class="summary-list"><li>"App Tracking Transparency" is a core new feature of Apple's <keyword id="8663299" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="iOS-14">iOS 14</keyword>.5 software update.</li><li>App developers now need to serve users a <keyword id="1739145" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Pop-Up">pop-up</keyword> asking for permission to track them.</li><li>Some users' settings have prevented them from seeing any pop-ups. Here's how to change that.</li></ul><p>Apple's <keyword id="10690688" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="ios-14-5">iOS 14.5</keyword> update, which began rolling out earlier this week, has a bunch of new features, from emoji to new voices for Siri.</p><p>Arguably the most significant update is the introduction of "<a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/explainer-apple-idfa-app-privacy-changes-2020-12">App Tracking Transparency</a>," which requires app developers to serve pop-ups explicitly asking people to opt in to being tracked across other companies' apps and websites.</p><p>However, some people who've updated to iOS 14.5 haven't seen any permission pop-ups.</p><p>Mobile-advertising experts suggested three possible reasons. Apple did not respond to requests for comment.</p><h2>1. The 'allow apps to request to track' <keyword id="6355135" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Privacy">privacy</keyword> setting is toggled off</h2><p>The simplest explanation for not yet seeing the pop-ups boils down to an option in a user's privacy settings.</p><p>To check if that's the case, head to the Settings app and scroll down to "privacy." Clicking on "tracking" shows a screen that looks like the image below, with the option to toggle "allow apps to request to track" on or off.</p><p>If the toggle is off, apps will be prevented from sharing that device's Identifier for Advertisers, or <keyword id="1026763" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="IDFA">IDFA</keyword>, with other apps and companies (unless the person has previously given permission for certain apps to track them).</p><div type="image" title="ios 14 privacy" height="1600" width="739" msid="82332429" hostid="261"></div><p>Simon Poulton, the vice president of digital intelligence at the digital marketing agency Wpromote, said it was most likely that people with this setting switched off had "limit ad tracking" switched on in previous versions of iOS. In his view, the two settings aren't the same thing but are being treated as such by Apple.</p><p>The previous setting "was about ad tracking, obscuring the IDFA to mitigate ad tracking, but App Tracking Transparency is far broader, and there are lots of factors here - I don't think you can make the case that opting out of that is the same thing," Poulton said.</p><p>"It's another screw turning" for players in the mobile-advertising market, he said.</p><h2>2. Some users might not have the option to toggle 'allow apps to request to track' on</h2><p>Some people have reported that the "allow apps to request to track" option is grayed out, rendering them unable to opt in to receiving the notifications.</p><div type="image" title="iOS 14 privacy" height="1334" width="750" msid="82332430" hostid="261"></div><p><a href="https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT212025">Apple says on its support page</a> that this will affect users under 18 or devices with child accounts; Apple IDs managed by an educational institution or other organization that limits tracking; and Apple IDs created within the past three days.</p><p>However, Insider found at least two instances of users who didn't fall into these categories but were unable to toggle the setting. The mobile-measurement firm AppsFlyer <a href="https://www.appsflyer.com/blog/zeroed-idfa-ios-14/">said in a blog post last year</a> that some people had been able to reset the toggle by logging out of their iCloud accounts and logging back in again.</p><h2>3. Some apps haven't rolled out the prompt yet</h2><p>While many developers began serving the privacy pop-up immediately after the iOS 14.5 update rolled out on Monday, others are waiting a little longer.</p><p>"Some brands have decided they will not show the ATT prompt on the first open," Poulton said. "You just get one shot" to show the user the pop-up, he added, and some developers are waiting to see how things shake out before proceeding. That does mean, however, that those apps will not be able to access user IDFAs in the interim.</p><div type="image" title="iOS 14.5 privacy popup" height="828" width="1792" msid="82332431" hostid="261"></div><p>"After I installed iOS 14.5, I was surprised how few applications presented me with a pop-up," said Aaron McKee, the chief technology officer of Blis, a location-focused adtech company that helps advertisers target consumers. "I didn't see one in Twitter, Facebook, Reddit, Snap, LinkedIn, Uber, Uber Eats, Deliveroo, TripAdvisor, or almost any other game or utility app I could find on my phone."</p><p>McKee said that on Thursday, 30% of iOS 14.5 bid requests across Blis' network arrived with an IDFA present, meaning those users had opted in to tracking. But for the previous version of iOS, 89% had an IDFA attached.</p><p>"Some users understand the value exchange that exists between apps and publishers - sharing a bit of (mostly pseudo-anonymous) data means that apps can continue to provide free content," McKee said. "It also appears that a significant cross-section don't want to be part of that value exchange, and <keyword id="35666" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="advertising">advertising</keyword> and adtech companies should ensure they have a future-proofed, privacy-first approach to reaching their audiences."</p><h2>Bonus: Users can check whether they're opted in to receiving 'personalized ads' on Apple's services</h2><p>At the bottom of iOS 14.5's privacy settings is an "Apple Advertising" page where people can choose whether Apple can serve "personalized ads" to them in the App Store, Apple News, and the Stocks app. <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/apple-new-suggested-app-ad-format-details-revealed-2021-4">Apple is preparing to launch an ad format in the App Store</a> that suggests apps a person might like to download.</p><div type="image" title="apple app privacy" height="1792" width="828" msid="82332432" hostid="261"></div><p>Apple has said that it does not track users and that its own apps don't share information for advertising purposes with other apps and companies. However, the fact that Apple's setting works on an opt-out basis and appears in a separate menu has been a bone of contention among members of the mobile-advertising community.</p><p>"It's certainly something the mobile-ad industry isn't impressed with," said Shumel Lais, CEO of the analytics platform Appsumer. "But ultimately Apple can get away with it, as it can serve personalized ads using its own attribution solution without having to expose user identifiers to advertisers."</p>

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>DANIEL LEAL-OLIVAS/AFP/Getty Images</span></p></div><p></p></div></div></p><ul class="summary-list"><li>Nearly half the British public are stockpiling goods in their own homes to prepare for a no-deal Brexit.</li><li>40% of people are stockpiling things like food, medicine and clothes, according to new research.</li><li>Both candidates to replace Theresa May as prime minister have pledged to leave the European Union without a deal later this year if necessary.</li><li>Businesses have warned that there isn't enough warehouse space to stockpile goods in the run-up to October.</li><li>"Within weeks it is likely that shoppers would notice significant and adverse changes to the products available and random, selective shortages," the Food and Drink Federation told Business Insider.</li></ul><p>LONDON - Four out of ten Brits are stockpiling items including food, medicine and clothes in preparation for the growing prospect of the United Kingdom leaving the European Union without a Brexit deal later this year.</p><p>40% of people in the UK have begin stockpiling goods in fear that there will be shortages in a no-deal Brexit scenario, <a href="http://events.blis.com/the-real-retail-story-emea" target="_blank" rel="noopener">according to research into consumer behaviour carried out by intelligence company, Blis.</a></p><p>The most commonly stockpiled item is food. 56% of those Brits who are stockpiling are doing so with food items. 44% are building up supplies of household items ,and well over a third (37%) are doing so with medicine.</p><p>The public is even stockpiling clothing. Over a quarter of Brits have bought extra clothes and shoes to prepare for shortages and higher prices in aftermath of the UK leaving the EU without a deal on October 31.</p><p>Both candidates to replace Theresa May as prime minister, Boris Johnson and Jeremy Hunt, have promised to take the UK out of the EU this year, with or without a deal, with Johnson insisting that leaving on October 31 is "do or die."</p><p>The revelation that nearly half of British people are stockpiling goods like food and medicine in their own homes comes as British businesses ramp up preparations for a possible no-deal Brexit on October 31.</p><ul><li><strong>READ: <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/no-deal-brexit-not-enough-warehouses-to-stockpile-goods-for-halloween-no-deal-2019-4?r=US&amp;IR=T" target="_blank" rel="noopener">No-deal Brexit stockpiling panic as British businesses warn warehouses are already booked up for Christmas</a></strong></li></ul><p><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/no-deal-brexit-not-enough-warehouses-to-stockpile-goods-for-halloween-no-deal-2019-4?r=US&amp;IR=T" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Business Insider reported earlier this year</a> that there was an even greater risk of supermarket shelves going empty due to shortages in October, than there was in the run-up to the original Brexit deadline in March.</p><p>That's because most of the warehouse space that companies used to stockpile goods in the run-up to March is not available in October, as it's already booked up for the busy Christmas period when demand for goods rockets.</p><p>Reacting to the research, a spokesperson for the Food and Drink Federation warned that British people should expect certain foods to quickly run out if the UK leaves the EU without a deal on Halloween.</p><p>"A no-deal exit from the EU would be disastrous for the UK's food and drink industry," they told Business Insider.</p><p>"Within weeks it is likely that shoppers would notice significant and adverse changes to the products available and random, selective shortages. Limited shelf life products would face the most immediate risk."</p><p>They said the period leading up to October was "particularly stark" as retailers already have to prepare for Christmas.</p><p>"Food and drink manufacturers face difficulty in securing frozen and chilled warehousing space or logistics capacity for stockpiling, as this is peak Christmas production and the space required is already booked," they said.</p><p>"Manufacturers will therefore have no spare production capacity or ability to store ingredients and finished products.</p><p>"UK food imports will climb from autumn onward as fresh food stocks decline, so any no-deal disruption will have a major impact on availability."</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Stefan Rousseau/PA Images via Getty Images</span></p><p class="caption">Jeremy Hunt.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>The research also found that over half of Brits (55%) expect to have less disposable income as a result of Brexit.</p><p>Diane Perlman, Chief Marketing Officer at Blis, told Business Insider: "It's a clear indicator of how British retailers are being directly impacted by the decision to leave the European Union.</p><p>"The more retailers can understand the behaviour of their customers in the real world, the better they can prepare."</p><p>Naomi Smith, CEO of anti-Brexit group Best For Britain, told Business Insider: "Not content with the blue passport, Brexit zealots like Johnson and Hunt seem determined to bring back ration books.</p><p>"Stockpiling essentials is a far cry from the promise of a prosperous Britain.</p><p>"Britain is running out of beans - in more ways than one. No-deal Brexit: Almost half of Brits are stockpiling food, medicine and clothes as UK heads for the cliff edge

<p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div>Inspired by this intriguing <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G0mKQtEAlOY">YouTube video</a>, we're going to dive into the tantalizing question:<p>What would happen if the sun disappeared this very second?</p><p>The sun is about <a href="http://space-facts.com/the-sun/">333,000 times the mass of Earth</a> and produces&#xa0;the same amount of energy as <a href="http://www.physics.fsu.edu/users/ProsperH/AST1002H/sun.htm">100 billion hydrogen bombs</a> every second!&#xa0;</p><p>Its giant mass makes the sun the dominant gravitational force&#xa0;in the solar system that locks all eight planets into eliptical orbits.</p><p>At the same time, the sun's enormous energy heats our planet just enough so that Earth's surface is the right temperature for liquid water - the catalyst for life.&#xa0;</p><p>But what would happen if we lost the sun? What would we feel and see if all of a sudden if just went poof!</p><p>What might seem like a silly question on the surface was actually an important thought experiment for Albert Einstien.</p><h2>The speed of gravity</h2><p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div>Before Einstein attacked this problem, <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Action_at_a_distance">scientists suspected</a> - but hadn't proved - that gravity acted instantaneously.<p>If that were true, then the first thing that would happen when the sun disappeared is that Earth, along with all the other planets, would go flying off into space. It would be complete and utter chaos in our solar system.&#xa0;</p><p>Light, on the other hand, is not instantaneous: It travels at approximately 671 million miles per hour and takes roughly 8 minutes to reach Earth. Therefore, we would still see the sun in our sky eight minutes after it was gone.</p><p>So, if the speed of light is a constant and the speed of gravity is instantaneous, then we would feel the sun's disappearance before we saw it.&#xa0;</p><p>But, as Einstein showed in in his theory of general relativity that he introduced in 1915, the force from gravity is not instantaneous. In fact, it travels the same speed as light!</p><p>Therefore, if the sun disappeared, we would remain blisfully unaware for eight minutes that inevitable doom was upon us.&#xa0;</p><h2>Eternal night&#xa0;</h2><p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div>We wouldn't be left in complete and utter darkness, however.<p>The stars would still shine, and electricity would continue to work so cities would remain lit for as long as the power lasted,&#xa0;and even the planets would remain visible for a brief time.</p><p>For example, when Jupiter is closest to Earth it's about <a href="http://pages.uoregon.edu/jimbrau/astr121/Notes/Jupiter/jupiterradio.html">33 light minutes away</a>, which means we would continue to see the giant planet for over an hour - the time it would take for the resdiaul light to reach Jupiter and reflect back to Earth - after the sun was gone.</p><p>But after eight minutes, one thing on Earth would come to a screeching hault, <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qF3ejw7JJuc">explains Michael Stevens</a>, who founded and stars in the widely popular YouTube channel Vsauce. Without sunlight, photosnythesis - the process by which all plants generate food - would stop the second the sunlight winked out in our sky.&#xa0;</p><p>Most small plants woule die within a matter of days, but that's not what we should be worried about: Earth's average surface temperature would drop to 32 degrees Fahrenheit after the first week, and then to negative 150 degrees Fahrenheit by the end of the first year.&#xa0;</p><p>All the while, Earth's oceans would grow ever colder, eventually freezing over, transofrming Earth into an ice world. But just like deep lakes in winter, only the surface would freeze, leaving a liquid ocean underneath.&#xa0;If any humans survived this extreme transformation, their only refuge, according to Stevens, would be near geothermal vents on the ocean floor. These vents emit heat that wells up from the enter of the Earth.&#xa0;</p><h2>Life on Earth would thrive for billions of years</h2><p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div>This way of life would be miserably dark and lonely, and it is difficult to know whether humans would last long under these conditions.&#xa0;<p>On the other hand, the animals that live around these vents today&#xa0;would continue surviving for billions of years after the sun vaniched. That's because these animals don't need the sun to live. Instead, they get their food and energy from the heat coming out of&#xa0;these geothermal vents.&#xa0;&#xa0;</p><p>Therefore, most but not all life would be extinguished from our planet without the sun. These geothermal-loving organimss would last for billions of years after the sun vanished and after all other life froze into extintction.</p><p>Oddly enough, this iceball Earth resembles some of the moons around Jupiter that <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/active-hydrothermal-vents-on-enceladus-2015-3">astrobiologists suspect</a> could harbor extraterrestrial microbes.&#xa0;</p><h2>What lies beyond</h2><p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_left float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div>Right now, Earth is orbiting the sun at a blazing speed of <a href="http://www.scientificamerican.com/article/how-fast-is-the-earth-mov/">67,000 miles per hour</a>. If the sun vanished, its gravitational pull would be gone, but Earth's speed would remain the same.&#xa0;<p>To understand why, picture yourself tying a rock to the end of a string and then swinging that string in a circle over your head. Then you let go of the string. The rock goes flying in a straight line away from you, the same way that Earth would go flying in a straight line away from the central point in space where the sun used to sit.&#xa0;</p><p>As long as Earth didn't collide with any other planets, asteroids, or comets, it would only take about 377,000 years for it to traverse 4.3 light years - the distance to the nearest star, Alpha Centauri. And after 1 billion years, Steven calculates, Earth would have traveled 100,000 light years, or the length of the entire Milky Way Galaxy.</p><p>Who's to say our tiny planet wouldn't get picked up and pulled into orbit by another star or, perhaps, a black hole? The Milky Way harbors an estiamted 100 billion stars and as many as <a href="http://science.nasa.gov/astrophysics/focus-areas/black-holes/">a billion black holes</a>.
