The combined value of the top 10 companies remained unchanged in the last one year, at ₹73.3 lakh crore. However, the picture wasn't as rosy for the startup ecosystem. The top 10 had a mixed year, five of them seeing a robust double double digit growth in value, two of them saw single-digit growth, and three of them shed around 10% of their value. L&amp;T’s value went up by 41%, HDFC Bank’s value swelled by 35% due the merger with its parent, and ITC too saw its value swell by 24%. Notable exits &amp; big comebacks Startups, however, had a bad year with Swiggy shedding 26% of its value, Dream11’s value went down by 9.8%, and Razorpay by 8.5%. Meanwhile, in the listed space, while most new-age companies like Policybazaar, Delhivery, Zomato Paytm, saw their valuations go up, Nykaa remained an outlier as it shed 26.8% of its value. Byju’s and Pharmeasy exited the list which has a new cut off rate of ₹6,700 crore. “Startup funding and valuation continued their downward trajectory. Startups in the list cumulatively lost ₹4 lakh crore led by <keyword id="19914048" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="byjus" source="keywords">Byjus</keyword>, Dealshare, and Pharmeasy; which failed to make it to the list this year,” Hurun said. The unlisted universe had yet another disappointment. India’s most valuable unlisted company and Covid-19 vaccine maker Serum Institute of India saw its value decrease by 13% to ₹1.9 lakh crore. There have been many comeback stories as well amongst the top 500 companies. Suzlon Energy registered one of the highest value growth this year, as its value swelled by a remarkable 436%. Jindal Stainless’ value went up by 395% and JSW Infrastructure by 310%. “It indicates a rise in renewable energy and infrastructure development. For instance, INOX Wind, which was on the path to insolvency in 2017, registered a 450% growth in value and stormed into 2023 Burgundy Private <keyword id="20554331" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="hurun-india" source="keywords">Hurun India</keyword> 500,” said Anas Rahman Junaid, MD and chief researcher, of Hurun India. But, 61 new companies made their debut to the list, led by industrial products with 16 new entrants, followed by financial services with 10 new entrants. Apart from Inox Wind, freshly listed R R Kabel and Welspun Corp were the notable unlisted entrants including unicorn Incred Finance, and Bengaluru-based gaming startup Gameskraft. Jio Financial Services which recently demerged from RIL is the 28th most valuable company. cumulative value of ₹231 lakh crore ($2.8 trillion). They went up from ₹212 lakh crore from June last year, but remained flat since 2021, the report says. “The 2023 Burgundy Private Hurun India 500 list is a strong confirmation of the Indian economy's solid performance in all sectors. The increase in new entrants from industrial goods shows India's rising manufacturing growth,” said Junaid. The combined value of the listed and unlisted companies which made it to the 2023 Burgundy Private Hurun India 500, is more than the combined GDP of Saudi Arabia, Switzerland and Singapore, the report said. “The 2023 Burgundy Private Hurun India 500 companies represent India’s economically strongest businesses. The reason is self-explanatory as these companies have a total value of $2.8 trillion, which is almost 90% of India’s current GDP, i.e. they are the backbone of India’s economy. Together, these 500 companies had combined sales of ₹79 lakh crore and employed 7 million staff, which is more than the working population of Switzerland,” Junaid said. The cut off for companies to enter the list went up by 13% to ₹6,700 crore.

Paytm (2010) Total funding: ₹39,460 crore The Noida-based digital payments and financial services company ranked third on the list. Swiggy (2014) Total funding: ₹29,600 crore Founded in 2014, the food-delivery start-up Swiggy ranked fifth on the list. The 8-year-old startup with headquarters in Bengaluru has already spread to 500 Indian cities. 6. Zomato (2010) Total funding: ₹20,550 crore The Gurugram-based food delivery startup Zomato, which took the sixth position on the list, witnessed a slew of resignations by top executives in 2022, including co-founder Mohit Gupta’s resignation. 7. Sharechat (2015) Total funding: ₹13,980 crore Founded in 2015, Google and Temasek Holdings owned Sharechat is an Indian social media enterprise based in Bengaluru. BYJU’s, Zomato, Dream11 among India’s most valuable PE/VC-funded companies as per  Hurun

<ul><li>A report by <keyword id="15967451" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="reedseer-strategy-consultants" source="Orion">Reedseer Strategy Consultants</keyword> says that the time to scale for startups has gone down significantly between 2000 to 2017. </li><li>Over 40 startups — unicorns and soonicorns — crossed $100 million in revenues in FY22, the report said. </li><li>Fast-growing internet user base and capital availability are among a few reasons for hastening the pace of scale up. </li><li>VCs invested about $143 billion over the last 15 years in the startup ecosystem.</li></ul>The average time taken by startups to reach revenue of $100 million has gone down significantly in the last two decades, says a report by Reedseer Strategy Consultants. While it took 18 years, on average, for a startup founded in 2000 to hit $100 million in revenue, for a company founded in 2017, this took barely five years. This fall in average time has been gradual – falling from 18 years for those incorporated in 2000, to 15 years for 2005 startups; to 10 years for those started in 2010; to around six years for 2015 startups and finally falling to 4-5 years for companies founded in 2017. “With the ecosystem maturing in the last decade, the time taken to reach the $100 million mark has decreased significantly,” the report said. This has seen over 40 startups — which are either unicorns or soonicorns – cross the $100 million revenue mark in FY22, the report said. These startups took anywhere between 5-12 years to hit the milestone. The time to scale for unicorns in logistics and eB2B segments is six years, while the highest time is taken by gaming companies – at 12 years. For sectors like fintech, e-commerce, D2C and foodtech, the average time to scale is seven years. <div type="image" title="Redseer Report" msid="96739936" hostid="261"></div> VCs provide ‘growth funds’ As per <keyword id="3359665" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="redseer" source="Orion">Redseer</keyword>, a fast-growing internet user base, capital availability, maturing businesses that are opening opportunities for enablers and more experienced operators are the reasons why time to scale has drastically reduced in the last two decades. A large contributor to the ability of companies to scale at lightning speed is the maturing funding ecosystem — allowing startups to acquire customers and expand businesses. “Venture capital has played a central role in helping startups scale to the 100 million revenue milestone. Besides the capital, investors add tremendous value to the companies they fund. In addition, the knowledge of governance, financial prudence, and networks brought by VCs are invaluable for startups,” the report said. VCs invested about $143 billion over the last 15 years (2008 to 2022) in the startup ecosystem, which is currently valued at $804 billion, Redseer says. At current valuations, it translates to approximately 4.5x return for VCs on their investments. How much money are startups making? There are 12,000 active startups in <keyword id="3658" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="india" source="Orion">India</keyword> falling into three categories – emerging, growth stage and large startups as per Redseer. About 11,500, or 95%, of these are in the ‘emerging’ stage, making less than $10 million in revenue. Those in the growth stage – companies that make between $10 million to $100 million – constitute a mere 3-4% of the ecosystem, with less than 500 startups making the cut. Startups that generate revenue to the tune of $100-$1 billion are around 40 i.e. 0.5% of the universe and only three startups generate revenue of $1 billion and over — as per Redseer. A multitude of factors hit startups in their growth journey to scale, including — operating in niche industries that restrict their addressable market; their inability to sustain growth due to improper product market fit; or challenges related to organisation, governance and operations. “Startups in the red ocean market - the industries with well-defined market space and industry boundaries, operate in a highly competitive environment. They need a unique competitive advantage to stay afloat,” the report says about another key challenge facing startups. The report also said that inability of startups to demonstrate unit economics or path to profitability is among the key challenges that trip most startups on their route to the big companies’ club. This issue has not spared even the largest players – most listed players’ stocks have been punished by the stock market investors for their inability to demonstrate strong unit economics. “Public markets listing, which is considered a litmus test for valuations, has ended up becoming a poisoned chalice for a few. After Page Industries, Motherson Sumi Systems and IT major Infosys have the highest women percentage at 41% and 40% respectively. <keyword id="6355199" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="reliance-industries" source="Orion">Reliance Industries</keyword>, which has been named as India’s most valuable company by the report, has only 18% of women employees in its workforce and hired 22,620 new female employees in the last one year. The 500 companies together employ 7.3 million people, out of which 137 companies have more than 10,000 employees and 103 companies have less than 1,000 employees, according to the report. Around 3.9 lakh new jobs were created by the companies in the list in the last one year. All the 500 companies in the list have appointed 664 women directors on their respective boards. Apollo Hospitals has the highest number of women directors out of all the companies. <ul><li>Mukesh Ambani’s <keyword id="6355199" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="reliance-industries" source="Orion">Reliance Industries</keyword> topped the charts in the key metrics which matter the most – value, revenue and profits, according to the 2022 Burgundy Private <keyword id="3656834" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Hurun-India" source="Orion">Hurun India</keyword> 500 list.</li><li>Reliance Industries also emerged as the largest value creator in the last five years, adding ₹10.52 lakh crore to investor wealth.</li><li>The Adani Group dominated the list of top value gainers this year, with five of its group companies adding ₹8.42 lakh crore to investor wealth.</li></ul>Mukesh Ambani lost the crown of the richest Indian to Gautam Adani this year, but his company Reliance Industries has emerged as the leader across key metrics of valuation, revenue, and profitability, as per the 2022 Burgundy Private Hurun India 500 list. Reliance Industries retains its most valuable company tag for the second year on the list, with a total value of ₹17.25 lakh crore and a gain of 3.6% year-on-year. Interestingly, Reliance Industries alone accounts for nearly a quarter of the ₹72 lakh crore value of the top ten companies on the list, according to the report. Also, while these ten companies account for 37% of India’s GDP, according to Hurun India, Reliance Industries alone accounts for 8.9% of the country’s GDP. With a value of ₹11.68 lakh crore, Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) was the second-most valuable company on the list with the additional distinction of being the largest employer. Reliance Industries has also emerged as one of the best value creators in the last five years, with its value increasing by ₹10.52 lakh crore during this period. On the other hand, TCS’ value increased by a little over ₹4.4 lakh crore. <div type="image" title="table-1" msid="95914673" hostid="261" sizebytes="62018"></div> The soon-to-be-merged HDFC twins together command a value of ₹12.82 lakh crore. While most of the companies on the list are from the financial services, auto, telecom, IT and metals sectors, there’s one company – Rajesh Exports – which stands out. Rajesh Exports is a Bengaluru-based gold retailer, founded in 1995. It refines designs and sells gold and other luxury jewellery items. In terms of net profit, too, Reliance Industries comes out on top.
