Cooling mats, or beds, contain cold water or gels to maintain a cool temperature. A cooling vest is a wearable that functions in a similar way — for cats who will tolerate it. These products may be especially helpful if you can't keep indoor air temperatures cool enough. But outdoor cats might also appreciate a raised mesh bed or cooling mat, Eldredge says. Even without a cooling bed, you can ensure your cat has naturally cool surfaces to lie on. For indoor cats, this can mean tile or wood flooring as opposed to carpet. If your house is mostly carpeted, try putting down a cool, damp towel or some ice packs wrapped in a towel for your cat to rest on.Outdoor cats will do better on a patch of dirt than cement or asphalt, Eldredge says. Note: Living outdoors <a href="https://www.americanhumane.org/fact-sheet/indoor-cats-vs-outdoor-cats/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">increases</a> your cat's risk of heat stroke as well as disease, parasites, and predators, so it's best to keep <a href="https://www.insider.com/guides/pets/indoor-vs-outdoor-cat" target="_blank" rel="noopener">cats as indoor pets</a>, Whittenburg says.<h2>4. Provide shade</h2>Access to shade is key, especially for cats living outdoors and feral cats, Whittenburg says. If you don't have trees to offer natural shade, you may want to consider setting up a structure or <a href="https://www.insider.com/guides/pets/best-outdoor-cat-houses" target="_blank" rel="noopener">cat house</a> with plenty of airflow for cats to keep out of the sun.Closing your curtains or blinds will provide more shade for indoor cats, Eldredge says.<h2>5. Keep them hydrated</h2>All cats need access to fresh water — but this becomes even more important during heat waves. You can use water to keep cats both hydrated and cool."Cats are notorious for not <a href="https://www.insider.com/how-to-get-pet-to-drink-water-2019-7" target="_blank" rel="noopener">drinking enough water</a>," Whittenburg says. If you have a cat who prefers not to drink much, offer wet food to help prevent dehydration.Eldredge and Whittenburg recommend the following tips to help cats who resist drinking water stay hydrated: <ul><li>Leave your faucet running to a trickle.</li><li>Set up a pet drinking fountain.</li><li>Offer a mug of water, for cats who prefer drinking out of your glass.</li><li><a href="https://www.vet.cornell.edu/departments-centers-and-institutes/cornell-feline-health-center/health-information/feline-health-topics/hydration" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Add some flavoring</a>, such as a few drops of canned tuna juice, to their water dish.</li><li>Offer a damp washcloth so they can lick the water off.</li><li>Freeze a bowl of water and let it slowly melt. This may work particularly well for outdoor cats.</li></ul><h2>6. Try cat sunscreen</h2>Most cats are generally safe from sunburn, but their nose, ears, and any other places on their body with thin or no hair are <a href="https://www.aspca.org/news/pets-and-sunscreen-dont-get-burned-myths" target="_blank" rel="noopener">more vulnerable</a>. Hairless cats are also much more prone to sunburn, Whittenburg says. If your cat resides indoors 24/7, they don't really need sunscreen, Eldredge says, but if your cat goes in and out, applying sunscreen may help protect them from painful burns.You may find some sunscreens approved for cats at your local pet store. Just make sure to choose cat-friendly sunscreen. Cats may lick off sunscreen, which can cause problems if the ingredients are toxic, Whittenburg says.Sunscreen for cats <a href="https://www.aspca.org/news/pets-and-sunscreen-dont-get-burned-myths" target="_blank" rel="noopener">shouldn't contain</a> zinc oxide, salicylates, or any scents, Eldredge says. Quick tip: You might find applying sunscreen to a cat challenging, to say the least. Elredge recommends offering a treat or toy as a distraction to keep them from licking it off immediately. <h2>When to call your veterinarian</h2>According to Whittenburg, the following signs <a href="https://www.aaha.org/your-pet/pet-owner-education/ask-aaha/how-can-i-prevent-heatstroke-in-my-pet/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">could mean</a> your cat is overheated or experiencing heat stroke:<ul><li>Panting</li><li>Rapid breathing</li><li>Red or pale gums</li><li>Lack of coordination, stumbling, or falling</li><li>Extreme lethargy</li></ul>If your cat seems a little too warm, a good first step involves making sure they're hydrated. One way to assess your cat's hydration is the "<a href="https://www.vet.cornell.edu/departments-centers-and-institutes/cornell-feline-health-center/health-information/feline-health-topics/hydration" target="_blank" rel="noopener">skin tent</a>."Quick tip: Simply lift some of the skin near their shoulder area and check whether it stays tented up or snaps back down when you let it go, Eldredge says. Skin that stays tented suggests dehydration, so it's a good idea to offer water and monitor them for signs of severe dehydration or heat stroke.If your cat is moderately dehydrated or overheated, you can try the at-home hydration methods mentioned above. But if they show signs of <a href="https://www.aaha.org/your-pet/pet-owner-education/ask-aaha/how-can-i-prevent-heatstroke-in-my-pet/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">heat stroke</a> or severe dehydration, like seizures, collapsing, vomiting, or diarrhea, you'll need to bring them to the vet for treatment, which <a href="https://www.nasc.cc/pet-university/heat-stroke-cats/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">might include</a> subcutaneous or IV fluids for hydration, Eldredge says.<h2>Insider's takeaway</h2>Cats tolerate heat fairly well — in fact, they often seek it out by choice. But if your cat lives exclusively indoors, they're probably acclimated to the same temperature range as you, and high summer temperatures outdoors can leave them uncomfortably warm. If you notice signs of dehydration or overheating — including skin tenting, panting, or uncharacteristic clumsiness — offer cool water or wet food and give your vet a call. You know your cat's regular behavior — if they seem a little off or not quite their usual self, it's not a bad idea to at least contact your vet, Eldredge says.

Business Insider has verified her expenses.The first Taylor Swift song I heard was "Love Story" when I was 14.I started listening to her more during her "Red" album era and was a proper Swiftie by 2014, during her "1989" album era.When Taylor first shared the US dates for her Eras Tour in 2022, there was a lot of chatter online about the possibility of a world tour, too.I'm very active in the Taylor Swift fandom, especially on X and Instagram. I had notifications turned on for almost every major social platform in case she dropped her Asia tour dates.Mentally, I was already prepared to travel to see her.When Taylor finally announced the international dates last year, she only had Tokyo and Singapore in Asia. Tokyo is too far, so I decided I'd try to catch her in Singapore instead.<h2>But buying tickets for her concert was tough</h2>My friend and I weren't able to get tickets through Ticketmaster, so I started looking for alternate ways.That's when I learned that Klook, the booking platform, was launching an <a target="_blank" href="https://www.klook.com/tetris/promo/taylorswifttheerastoursg/?spm=BlogArticle.InArticleHyperlinkWord&amp;clickId=eeab6be9ff">Eras Tour experience package</a> that included two concert tickets and a one-night hotel stay.The sale went live on the Klook mobile app during Singapore time, and due to the time difference, my friend and I had to wake up early for it.After clicking on the link, I was immediately sent into the waiting room. I think I was 9,000 or something in the queue. It was a long shot, but I moved up the queue quickly.<h2>It felt too good to be true</h2>My friend and I had looked through the packages prior, trying to see which would fit our budget best. But when I finally got to the page, the cheapest package was already sold out.At that point, the concert date and the seats didn't matter — I just wanted to get tickets.I ended up getting category six tickets to Taylor's last show in Singapore. I paid 52,675 rupees, or about $635, for two concert tickets and a one-night stay at Capri China Square, a four-star hotel in Singapore.I think we got a pretty good deal with the package, especially after we divided the cost between the two of us.We're nowhere close to the stage, but it doesn't matter to me. Our seats are at the top of the stadium, slightly toward the middle, so we'll get a good view of the stage and the screens.We booked a direct flight from Bangalore to Singapore. We paid 56,335.80 rupees, or about $680, for return tickets for two people.This will be my first time in Singapore, so we extended our stay by two nights. We booked a hotel outside the city center and paid 30,063 rupees, or about $363, for a two-night stay in one room.<h2>This is going to be my first Taylor Swift concert</h2>When she was on her Reputation world tour, I was doing my masters in the UK. Some of my friends were going to her concert in Manchester, and they offered me an extra ticket.But I was on a student budget and I had exams, so I passed on their offer. China is already known for one rigorous exam that students spend years preparing for - the gaokao. The determining factor in a high school student's college placement, the gaokao is the cause of pressure, stress, and occasionally cheating among test takers.But as graduates emerge from Chinese universities without jobs, more high school students are directing their efforts overseas. Chinese students now make up 31 percent of all <keyword id="6356001" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="international">international</keyword> college students at U.S. universities, according to data from the Institute of International <keyword id="6355445" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Education">Education</keyword>.In contrast, gaokao test takers reached a <a href="http://news.xinhuanet.com/edu/2013-05/07/c_124667008.htm">low in 2012</a> of about nine million since its peak of 10.5 million in 2008. <a href="http://news.xinhuanet.com/edu/2013-05/07/c_124667008.htm">The Financial Times</a> reported that an additional million students backed out of the test last minute in 2013.The pressure that once came with the gaokao now falls for some students to the SAT, ACT, and TOEFL.Scott Wang, a high school teacher who works with students applying to U.S. universities, said the amount of studying that goes into these efforts has intensified."Five years ago, I couldn't convince a single person to even consider taking the ACT," Wang said. "I begged, I was like 'I will even pay for your testing fee if you take the test and get a good score, because I know you can,' - nothing. This year, half the students are ACT takers."Wang said wealthy parents especially have become more zealous about getting their children admitted to U.S. universities.One family refused anything less than a one-on-one tutoring session, asking Wang to tutor from 1 a.m. to 3 a.m. - the only free time the student had. Another family sent their child to an SAT boot camp under the guise that they were going on vacation to Korea, Wang said.Parents have also hired multiple college application specialists at once. Wang said one of his students from last year went to three different tutoring companies for SAT training alone."Why are you bothering?" Wang had asked him. "He said, 'Well, my parents just want to be thorough."<h3>Trying to stand out</h3>The intense measures Chinese students go to during college applications is only representative of a fraction of the population. However, stories traded around the education industry highlight the competition that comes with wanting an education abroad. Traditionally, Chinese students have always been rigorous when it comes to academics and test-taking. For those that are doing everything to get into a U.S. university, the sheer number of high test scores has made standing out even harder.Cheng Ho, a Harvard graduate who has interviewed Chinese prospective students in Beijing, said he talked to tons of students with similar qualifications. If one student said she went to Africa to volunteer, a thousand other students will soon have the exact same thing on their resumes as well, Ho said."Chinese students are no different, they all have great grades," he said. "All they were ever taught was, 'You gotta do this, you gotta be number one, you still have to be number one.'"Another challenge facing students and schools is the difficulty in accurately evaluating all applicants. A student's aptitude for test taking may mask deficiencies in actual English or other capabilities, Guy Sivan said. Sivan is the COO of Vericant, a company that offers video interviewing services and identification verification for U.S. college and boarding school applicants.In their time at Vericant, Sivan and China director Kelly Yang have heard many reasons why such a service is necessary. One admissions officer, while speaking with a Chinese student over Skype, thought it was strange that the student had a black cat in her lap during the interview. Several minutes into the interview, the admissions officer realized that it wasn't a cat, but the hair from her mother's head as she whispered answers to the applicant.Another admissions office received ten applications from students of the same school, all claiming to be the top student at the school. Sivan said this kind of occurrence is very common."It's very, very high stakes, it's basically your path of life," Sivan said. "And people have different senses of what's possible or not possible to do."Giving admissions officers personalized books cataloging students' achievements has also become a common practice. Sivan remembered seeing one hardcover book that charted a student's arctic expedition. Unfortunately, because these additional materials are hard to verify, they often only carry entertainment value, piled into a corner of the admissions office."From the student's point of view, this is a way to get the attention of the admissions officer, to show something very, very impressive," Sivan said. "It's sad, but I think in most cases it's not really honest, and that's why the admissions officers ... they already kind of figure out, 'We can't really take it seriously, we can't really consider it.'"<h3>Money for the middleman</h3>Wealthier families have an inherent advantage in the landscape, since they are able to afford the test fees and services that will make a student more competitive. Because of this, there's a lot of money to be made by those in the industry.In the frenzy to get the best scores, some students ends up taking tests like the TOEFL multiple times in a few months. This makes it very difficult to get a testing seat, so students have to travel to remote areas of the country in order to take the exam.Kelly Yang said the demand has turned into a market for scalping test seat tickets. Referred to as huangniu, literally translated to 'yellow cow,' ticket scalpers buy up seats for tests, then sell them at a higher price, Yang said. Although she said it was most common with sporting event tickets, the operations had recently moved over to student exams. Yang discovered the trend while helping someone look for a September TOEFL test seat, and couldn't find any earlier than December."We searched online and said, 'What if I can't get the test date I want?' she said. "It said 'Go to huangniu.'"While some parents and students have become very well-versed in U.S. college admissions, others are willing to pay high premiums for agents and consultants to do all the work. This has created an environment in which it is very easy to take advantage of hopeful students and parents.As a result, some companies may end up over-promising.With expectations rising, teacher Scott Wang said he's seen parents demand their child get into a top school with an average GPA and SAT score, even though the likelihood is very low. "The problem is that in this city there's always going to be somebody out there who's like, 'Yeah, we can make that happen,'" Wang said. "And they'll go there, hoping against hope that something's going to be possible when it's not."

<ul class="summary-list"><li>I moved to the US 11 years ago to attend grad school in New York City. </li><li>In November, I took my <keyword id="12683512" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="citizenship-test" source="Orion">citizenship test</keyword> to become a naturalized US citizen. </li></ul>In July 2010 I boarded a non-stop flight from Buenos Aires, Argentina, to New York City. I was moving to the US to chase my dream of becoming a journalist and attend Columbia University for a Master's degree. My intention was to finish the 10-month program and fly back home, where I had left a fully furnished apartment, a cat living with my parents, and a boyfriend who had agreed to a temporary long-distance relationship. But then I got a job and a work visa. My career started to take off, so I focused on staying in the US. Since the day I moved here, I've had seven different <keyword id="11940510" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="immigration" source="Orion">immigration</keyword> statuses, and on December 2021 I <a href="https://www.insider.com/celebrities-who-are-immigrants-2017-2">became a naturalized US citizen</a>.The process from when I first moved here to now has cost me thousands of dollars, took many months of waiting impatiently for updates, and <a href="https://www.insider.com/us-citizenship-test-hard-questions-2018-3">most recently required a citizenship test</a> to prove that I knew enough about US history, civics, and the government to become a citizen.The whole thing was nerve-wracking because my ability to legally stay in the country was at stake. It required a lot of time filling out paperwork and looking through <keyword id="11896628" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="travel" source="Orion">travel</keyword> dates, back taxes, addresses lived in, and every detail of my personal life. But the easiest part was the civics test. I had over-prepared because I'd never studied American history before. <h2>What the citizenship test is like</h2>Once I filed all the paperwork required to apply for citizenship, I was given an interview date in which I had to go over some personal details, <a href="https://www.uscis.gov/citizenship/learn-about-citizenship/the-naturalization-interview-and-test">take an English test, and take a civics test</a>. I was required to pass both tests to be scheduled to take an oath and become a citizen. The English test is pretty straightforward. In my case, I was asked to read a sentence from a screen. Mine was "In which month is Columbus Day observed?" After I read it, I was then instructed to write a sentence that the interviewer read out loud for me. Mine was "Columbus Day is in October." Then we moved on to the civics test. You are encouraged to study ahead of time, and <a href="https://www.uscis.gov/citizenship/find-study-materials-and-resources/check-for-test-updates">all 100 questions</a> that can be asked are available online. You can even download an app to test yourself, which I did regularly for two weeks until I was getting every single question right over and over again. You pass the civics exam with six questions right out of 10. I was only asked six questions because I got all of them right. The questions were so easy that at one point I wondered if they were trying to trick me to say something wrong. <h2>What I was asked for the civics portion</h2>The six questions I was asked were: <ol><li>What ocean is on the West Coast?</li><li>Who wrote the Declaration of Independence?</li><li>Who is the current president?</li><li>What party is the current president from?</li><li>What are the two political parties in the US?</li><li>What did Susan B. Anthony do? </li></ol>After we were done with the test, my interviewer and I chatted about her desire to travel to Argentina, and what my plans were to celebrate after having passed. <h2>What happens after the test</h2>I was told by my interviewer that I'd receive a letter in the mail with my oath date, which she guessed would be only two weeks after my test date. It turned out to take a bit longer, and a month after I passed my test, I took the oath and became an American <a href="https://www.insider.com/photos-of-people-becoming-citizens-2018-9">citizen with a handful of other immigrants</a>. Because of COVID precautions, the group was small and the ceremony was quick, but we all cheered and waved our little American flags to celebrate the monumental milestone we had all achieved. After the ceremony, I drove home and ate homemade red, white, and blue cupcakes my American husband and three children had baked for me. I felt liberated and finally home.

She's known as Lofi Girl, and her channel has 11 million subscribers.But it's not the twee animation they come for — it's the <keyword id="11898471" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="music" source="Orion">music</keyword> broadcast on the channel 24 hours a day in a livestream titled "lofi hip hop radio - beats to relax/study to."In the past five years, <a href="https://lofigirl.com/">Lofi Girl</a> has gone from a passion project by one 20-year-old college student to a massive YouTube channel and music business run by a team of 14. Its playlists, featuring a mix of more than 2,500 tracks from the 300 artists the channel has signed to its in-house record label, have amassed a loyal following. But earlier this month, Lofi Girl's livestreams abruptly disappeared after the channel received a copyright strike from YouTube and was taken down without warning. It's not the first time Lofi Girl has faced what appear to be bad-faith attempts to remove it, and while the community has always rallied behind it, the people behind the channel are concerned YouTube's not doing enough to stop it from happening again. <h2>Lofi Girl's community is key to its success</h2>Lofi Girl's name references the lo-fi music genre, which incorporates subtle background noise amid a mixture of house, jazz, and hip-hop to give it a made-at-home sound. The channel dates back to March 2015, when a French 20-year-old digital marketing student, known to Insider only as "Dimitri," found a passion for creating music playlists that spanned multiple genres. Inspired by popular YouTube music creators such as <a href="https://www.youtube.com/user/MrSuicideSheep">MrSuicideSheep</a> and <a href="https://www.youtube.com/c/UKFDrumandBass">UKF</a>, Dimitri set up a YouTube channel called <a href="https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCM-4FLc3wlRHaoWseua1v3A">ChilledCow</a> featuring instrumental hip hop compilations. By the end of its first year, he had racked up 10,000 subscribers.Dimitri launched the Lofi Girl livestream in February 2017 after seeing comments from listeners who said they used his compilations to study or work, and the channel quickly grew. Its listener base jumped from 100,000 to 1 million subscribers in its first six months. Lofi Girl is set apart from other similar channels and streams because of its dedicated and close-knit community and its emphasis on up-and-coming creators. The team runs a server on the Discord messaging platform where artists submit tracks. A group of five curators, including Dimitri, decide which to release on the record label. The livestream comes together thanks to an automated queue of Lofi Girl's label backlog.According to Dimitri, the channel has a global audience, with large listener bases in Brazil, Vietnam, and Russia, alongside the United States, with many of its listeners being students. The channel has even received mentions in<a href="https://twitter.com/NickLink540/status/1513556513545195521?s=20&amp;t=RVso7HOk7WURSb1sPhyYgw"> academic theses</a> and <a href="https://twitter.com/yudhanjaya/status/1462352208675196929?s=20&amp;t=RVso7HOk7WURSb1sPhyYgw">novel acknowledgments</a>. "We receive countless heartwarming comments from students about how the music has helped them complete assignments, pass exams, and even graduate and write books or theses," Dimitri said.But on July 10, YouTube issued a <a href="https://twitter.com/lofigirl/status/1546058721792507906">copyright takedown notice</a> against LoFi Girl. Without warning, a daily listen for millions of fans had disappeared. <h2>YouTube's copyright system could endanger the future of music streaming channels</h2>Copyright strikes are a <a href="https://support.google.com/youtube/answer/2814000?hl=en#zippy=%2Cwhat-happens-when-you-get-a-copyright-strike">YouTube reporting system</a> that allows users to flag that a creator has used their intellectual property without permission. If a channel receives three copyright strikes, YouTube may terminate it.After the channel was hit with a copyright strike, fans immediately mobilized, launching the <a href="https://twitter.com/lofigirl/status/1546058721792507906">hashtag</a> #BringBackLofiGirl to pressure YouTube to bring back stream. Within 24 hours of issuing the strike, <a href="https://twitter.com/lofigirl/status/1546058721792507906">YouTube</a> determined that the copyright claims that led to Lofi Girl's suspension were "abusive." They resolved the strikes and — much to fans' relief — reinstated the channel.The claims appear to be linked to Malaysian record label FMC Music. In a <a href="https://twitter.com/MusicFMC/status/1547212094520430592">Twitter statement,</a> FMC Music apologized for the copyright claim and blamed it on a hack.YouTube's copyright claim system has long been criticized by creators for its potential to be exploited — <a href="https://www.insider.com/youtubers-channels-are-being-held-hostage-with-fake-copyright-claims-2020-6">as Insider previously reported</a> — given that it's largely automated and requires little proof upfront when making a claim."The system incentivizes the platforms to err on the side of caution, because it tells them that once they get a takedown, they need to act quickly. And so most take things down under the mistaken belief that the counter notice system will counterbalance that," the Electronic Frontier Foundation's Katharine Trendacosta told <a href="https://www.thefader.com/2022/07/15/after-the-lofi-girl-takedown-can-youtube-protect-users-from-copyright-claim-abuse">The Fader</a> earlier this month. The team at Lofi Girl — along with many other YouTubers — have suggested the platform employ a manual review process on all claims and require a user prove the content violates their copyright before acting."We're shocked and disappointed to see that there's still not any kind of protection or manual review of these false claims," the channel <a href="https://twitter.com/lofigirl/status/1546601378436599808">tweeted</a> following the takedown. "At the end of the day, it was entirely out of our control, and the sad part is that there was no way to appeal beforehand/prevent it from happening." It's not the first time YouTube has erroneously dinged Lofi Girl. In February 2020, <a href="https://twitter.com/lofigirl/status/1231154392700727296">the channel was temporarily taken down</a> after YouTube said it was "not in compliance with our Terms of Service." Three days later, YouTube reinstated the channel after determining that the site was flagged due to a <a href="https://twitter.com/TeamYouTube/status/1231527775011516417">"mistake on our side."</a> Dimitri said that the team has never been able to get to the bottom of exactly why this happened. In response to its recent troubles, Dmitri says he's working on diversifying LoFi Girl's platforms to minimize its reliance on YouTube. It boasts a successful Spotify channel and has begun dipping its toes into the physical market by selling limited-edition <a href="https://vinyl-lofirecords.com/collections/vinyl-album?view=boost-pfs-original">physical LPs</a> of some of its releases. Despite its struggles, the channel remains optimistic and hopes that YouTube will consider changing how sites are flagged for copyright violations. They're also well aware that their case was resolved fairly quickly, and that many smaller creators don't have the ability to quickly fix takedown issues.
