<ul class="summary-list"><li>Doctors are using the <keyword id="1293839" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="clubhouse">Clubhouse</keyword> app to encourage people to take the COVID-19 vaccine.</li><li>But numerous doctors told Insider they were harassed and bullied after discussing the vaccine.</li><li>Black doctors in particular have faced substantial pushback, adding to the biases they already face.</li></ul><p>In the midst of a<a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/why-the-us-vaccine-rollout-is-a-disaster-what-next-2021-1"> turbulent COVID-19 vaccine rollout</a> in the United States, the internet has seen a flurry of misinformation <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/reasons-to-trust-coronavirus-vaccine-safety-2020-12">about the shots.</a></p><p>Now, doctors and healthcare professionals are speaking out publicly about the safety and efficacy of the vaccine. One platform they've zeroed in on is Clubhouse, the invite-only voice-app that has attracted prominent users like Kevin Hart, Oprah Winfrey, and <keyword id="4765561" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Tiffany-Haddish">Tiffany Haddish</keyword>.</p><p>The app allows people to create rooms around specific topics where anyone can join as an audience member. If someone wants to be a part of the conversation, they can virtually raise their hand and be added as a speaker.</p><p>But this format, coupled with a dearth of moderation, has opened the door for harassment against Black doctors who are fighting a battle against <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/black-scientist-coronavirus-vaccine-is-nothing-like-tuskegee-2021-1">vaccine distrust, particularly in the Black community</a>, according to five healthcare professionals who spoke with Insider.</p><p>When doctors have spoken out about the vaccine and challenged misinformation about COVID-19, they've been met with a virtual mob that bullies, spreads conspiracy theories, and in at least one case, allegedly sends death threats.</p><h2>Doctors faced a wide range of harassment on Clubhouse</h2><div type="image" title="COVID 19 vaccine" height="1802" width="2403" msid="81162529" hostid="261"></div><p><a href="https://www.docdanmd.com/">Dr. Daniel B. Fagbuyi</a>, an emergency physician based in Washington D.C., was initially hesitant to join the app. It's only available for iPhones, and he uses an Android.</p><p>But after hearing about misinformation on the platform - and users who were unsure whether they should trust it - he bought an iPhone and decided to speak up as an authoritative voice providing science-based information.</p><p>Fagbuyi told Insider that he received messages of encouragement after he spoke in some of the rooms. But he was also met with conspiracy theories, including unsubstantiated accusations that he was being paid by the government or pharmaceutical companies to push people to get the vaccine.</p><p>Dr. Cindy Duke, a Las Vegas-based virologist, microbiologist, and immunologist, has spoken on numerous Clubhouse panels about the COVID-19 vaccine. Her experiences echoed Fagbuyi's. </p><p>"We had a lot of misinformation we were called on to debunk," Duke told Insider. She said she had to talk about hydroxychloroquine and intravenous bleach, neither of which were endorsed by medical authorities in the US. (Former President Trump previously <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/taxpayers-have-spent-88-million-on-trump-hydroxychloroquine-obsession-2020-7">touted</a> hydroxychloroquine as a treatment for COVID-19, and once publicly <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/trump-suggests-infecting-disinfectant-video-transcript-2020-4">wondered</a> whether injecting disinfectants could treat the disease.)</p><p>Fagbuyi told Insider he also battled misinformation in the form of unfounded recommendations. He said Clubhouse's audio-only format allows users to easily claim that certain evidence exists when it really doesn't. A "study is not 'my cousin or two of my friends said this,'" he said.</p><p>The medical professionals who spoke with Insider said they are not being paid for providing medical information on Clubhouse. They have all mentioned they are doing so because they are trying to do their part in making sure credible scientific data is accessible to everyone. </p><h2><strong>A Clubhouse influencer has advocated for eating fruit over engaging with contemporary medicine</strong></h2><p>Chaka Clarke, a holistic influencer with over a million Instagram followers and 15,000 Clubhouse followers, has been one of the most vocal personalities spreading misinformation about COVID-19 and the vaccine on Clubhouse, according to doctors who spoke with Insider.</p><p>Dr. Jessica Isom, a community psychiatrist, Dr. Italo Brown, an emergency physician, and Dr. Aya Osman, a neuroscientist, also said Clarke has accused doctors of being "paid government agents."</p><p>In response to questions about this and other incidents, Clarke said his comments were taken out of context. </p><p>Clarke told Insider that he believes he was the one who was being bullied. He also denied spreading "information about the vaccine."</p><p>He continued, "There's such a disparate and disingenuous reasoning... where all of the people we spoke to, who are medical professionals have only tried to explore the methods that have been pushed forth by a massive pharmaceutical industry that hasn't been fair to Africans."</p><p>Clarke is the founder of a fruit-selling business called "Fruits n' Rootz," which offers fruit boxes that can range from $30 to $190.</p><p>Isom and Noor Rai, a fourth-year medical student told Insider they've heard Clarke encourage people to eat fruits and vegetables rather than engage with what Clarke categorized as "Western medicine."</p><p>"I was saying that because people should eat fruit," Clarke told Insider. "Not 'people should eat fruit and not take medicine.' Personally, I don't take medicine, haven't taken medicine, haven't been sick for the last 10 years because I have a healthy and balanced diet."</p><p>On social media, Clarke has posted memes and other material discouraging people from getting the COVID-19 vaccine and encouraging the consumption of fruit to boost the immune system. The<a href="https://www.nal.usda.gov/fnic/vitamins-and-minerals"> Center for Disease Control and Prevention</a> warns that "dietary supplements aren't meant to treat or prevent COVID-19."</p><p>"Oftentimes when you meet people, particularly those who have an anti-vaccine message, the way they send the message home is by increasing fear," Duke told Insider. "They use fear as a tactic under the guise of information which is actually misinformation."</p><h2><strong style="color: #000000;">A medical student became the target of a Clubhouse mob</strong></h2><p>On January 2, Clarke faced suspension from Clubhouse after being reported for spreading misinformation. He claimed in a since-deleted Twitter thread it was because of "con [doctors]" that he called "self-righteous, jealous mfs" and posted screenshots of the three doctors' Clubhouse profiles and a vaccine education room.</p><div type="image" title="Chakabars" height="1296" width="819" msid="81162530" hostid="261"></div><p>He continued, "What I wanna know is if things are as bad as stated, why the f--- do Black doctors have all the time in the world, every day, to be telling black people reasons why they should take European poison on Clubhouse? Shouldn't you be at work? Ahh I forgot you're being paid to trick us."</p><p>After his short suspension, Clarke returned to Clubhouse.</p><p>Isom, Brown, and Osman told Insider they witnessed Clarke launch an attack on Clubhouse against a medical student, whose name has not been publicized in order to prevent further harassment.</p><p>Clarke told Insider it was in self-defense because she and the group of people that reported him were "weaponizing the report function."</p><p>On January 12, Isom said the medical student told her Clarke posted her profile on his Instagram account. The medical student received over 50 messages on Instagram, including death threats, Isom told Insider.</p><p>According to Isom, the woman said that she and a group of people decided Clarke was dangerous and reported him for misinformation. Clarke confirmed to Insider he posted screenshots of her profile on Instagram, but said he took it down after learning about the backlash she received.</p><p>On January 13, Isom said she was in a room with the medical student when actress and comedienne Tiffany Haddish joined. Isom described her as "confrontational" and disruptive.</p><p>Haddish told Insider that she was going into the room to defend Clarke. "I said, 'You have been creating rooms using this man's name and slandering him. You have his name on your profile telling people to report him' and before I could tell her that was against Clubhouse rules, she kicked me out of the room."</p><p>Clarke and supporters later gathered in a room called "<keyword id="10809981" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="clubhouse-bullying">Clubhouse Bullying</keyword>" to address the bullying Clarke said he was facing on the app. He told the virtual room attended by over 2,500 people that he was made out to be "evil."</p><p>According to Isom and Osman, the medical student joined the "bullying" room and asked to be left alone. Osman said some of the people in the room laughed at the medical student and joked that she was "mentally unstable." Isom told Insider, "She was on stage crying, saying how she didn't anything to do with this and she was overwhelmed."</p><p>The Twitter hashtag "CHBullying" was initially used to defend Clarke, but others soon began using it to <a href="https://twitter.com/clubhouselurker/status/1349516716473274370?s=20">express</a> their <a href="https://twitter.com/naagnool_/status/1349520879366115330?s=20">discomfort</a> over how the medical student was treated and <a href="https://twitter.com/StephanieYeboah/status/1349518099205267463?s=20">demand that Clubhouse take action</a>.</p><p>Clubhouse did not respond to Insider's request for comment.</p><h2><strong>Doctors on Clubhouse have set out to set the record straight since they joined the app</strong></h2><p>The above cases illustrate what can happen if healthcare professionals dedicate their time to calling out misinformation - a draining and often thankless task. </p><p>"This is all a result of the medical injustices our community has experienced and still experiences to this very day," Osman told Insider. "The incidents on Clubhouse highlight the magnitude of mistrust which we need to address."</p><p>Duke, Brown, and Osman all mentioned Black Americans' <a href="https://www.cbsnews.com/news/covid-19-vaccine-why-some-black-americans-skeptical/">mistrust of the American medical system</a> - largely stemming from historical examples of severe mistreatment - as a reason for vaccine hesitancy amongst some Black Americans.</p><p>But they also noted the bias Black doctors face every day, especially Black women doctors. "You name the bias, we're fighting it every day," Duke told Insider.</p><p><a href="https://www.statnews.com/2021/01/05/doctors-on-social-media-are-being-cyberbullied-and-sexually-harassed-its-time-to-change-that/?fbclid=IwAR10tIDtu7ydEW7f0nFYhBEmT7gRAi0jT8ueauTNGg619Kme8hCLM9_pWZo">Stat News conducted a study</a> that found that "1 in 4 physicians who use social media reported being personally attacked." Vaccine advocacy was the most common reason. Treatment was worse for women and people of color, the study said, because of the added pressures of sexism and racism.</p><p>Isom said she believed her race and gender contributed to her harassment.</p><p>"From witnessing other instances on Clubhouse, where Black women are disrespected, talked over, not believed despite having a considerable expertise in ways that clearly are shown that there's racist, gendered lens through which they're being received."</p><p>Despite the pushback, all five doctors said they don't plan to leave the app anytime soon.</p><p>"I think it's a great place to have this dialogue, as is evidenced by the multiple DMs that I've received," Fagbuyi told Insider.</p><p>He described Clubhouse as "a microcosm" of contemporary society. "People push back on doctors and science because we didn't have great leadership in place so it's an example of what's going on in the real world," he said.</p>

And unfortunately, the answer to that question is "You probably can't."</p><p>Clubhouse is invite-only, meaning that anyone who wants to join has to be brought in by someone who already has an account. You can still download the app and put your name on a waiting list, but there's no guarantee that you'll ever get an account that way.</p><div type="image" title="what is clubhouse.PNG" height="1792" width="828" msid="80813866" hostid="261"></div><p>Additonally, Clubhouse is currently only available for iPhone users.</p> <p>Clubhouse's CEO Paul Davidson has said that the app will eventually open up to everyone, including Android users. But they're starting slow - anyone who manages to receive an invite is only be given two invites of their own, which they can then gift to others.</p><h3>How Clubhouse works</h3><p>Clubhouse creates a place where people can meet up to host, listen to, and in some cases, join conversations within the app's community.</p><p>When you open the app, you'll be presented with a list of rooms, as well as a list showing who's in each room. You can join the room by tapping on it, or start your room.</p><p>So far, most Clubhouse rooms have a TED Talk vibe, with one guest speaking and everyone else listening. The app is already considered a staple among Silicon Valley and entertainment personalities. It's even earned a valuation of over $1 billion, despite being founded less than a year ago.</p><p>Clubhouse has plans to expand futher, and eventually take their place among other major social media sites like Facebook or Twitter. But to do this, they're also going to have to face some of the controversies surrounding the platform.</p><p>Some journalists on Clubhouse - especially women - <a href="https://www.wired.com/story/plaintext-where-are-the-adults-in-the-clubhouse/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">have talked about being targets of bullying and harassment from others on the platform</a>. Others have witnessed rooms descend into <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/clubhouse-anti-semitism-chat-on-yom-kippur-2020-9" target="_blank" rel="noopener">anti-semitism</a>, racism, and COVID-19 denialism.</p><p>Clubhouse has already hired moderators, and CEO Davidson has said that "Any social network needs to make moderation a top priority." He committed $1.5 million to supplement their incomes, regardless of whether they opted out to promote racial and social justice initiatives or simply out of concerns related to COVID-19.</p><p>"[Kyrie stepped] up for his queens that decided to sit out because they weren't comfortable going into 'Wubble,'" Cloud said. "Whether it was for health or social justice reasons, he took care of us."</p><p>"I celebrate him because he has been nothing but genuine to our league and me," she added. "I can't speak highly enough about Kyrie, but [I'm] ready to fight y'all when you write all of these stories on him. He is just a genuine dude."</p>

Vaccines, compared in one simple chart

But any marketer that's active in social media should weigh the drawbacks of entering social audio right now. Here are some key issues to consider before jumping on board.</p><h2><a></a>Scale (in all its forms) is an issue</h2><p>For all its growth in recent months, Clubhouse had just 12.2 million downloads worldwide through March 9, 2021, per App Annie. There's no guarantee the app will remain as red-hot as it was in February: It was already starting to show signs of cooling down last month, per Sensor Tower. Other buzzy social apps before it-Vine, to name one-have followed a similar hockey-stick trajectory before sliding back down.</p><p>Absolute size, as well as other dimensions of scale, will be a major factor for marketers to consider. For now, social audio is a fraction of the size of social networking or podcasting. We estimate there will be 212.1 million monthly social network users and 117.8 million monthly podcast listeners in the US this year.</p><div type="image" title="Monthly Installs of Clubhouse Worldwide" height="456" width="470" msid="82205143" hostid="261"></div><p>Another challenge is usage frequency and time spent. Will the average consumer spend significant time listening to social audio-especially after the pandemic ends? Such activity is far more time-consuming and attention-focused than absently thumbing through a feed to kill a few minutes of time.</p><h2><a></a>Early marketing efforts may see only a small payoff</h2><p>Marketers shouldn't enter social audio in 2021 with the idea of generating a massive return. For one, the environment isn't conducive to doing anything splashy. And given the challenges with scale described above, the end results may be spotty at best.</p><p>While it's as easy as tapping a button on a phone screen to start an audio room, it's not so easy to make it successful. Here are just a few areas where the marketing experience on Clubhouse must improve:</p><ul><li>Making sure users find your room</li><li>Communicating with other users</li><li>Reaching users after an event</li></ul><p>There are few ways to measure and track results from social audio efforts at this point. Moderators can see a list of attendees in Clubhouse, but there aren't ways to easily scrape that data into a usable form (and it's questionable whether Clubhouse would condone the practice anyway).</p><div type="image" title="clubhouse app walkthrough" height="900" width="1200" msid="82205145" hostid="261"></div><p>That lack of native metrics has led early experimenters to kludge together their own. "We actually had our agencies record the session on their phones so that we could listen to it later, because it disappears otherwise," said Megan Stroud, brand director at spirits marketer Pernod Ricard.</p><p>For now, the call to action is to measure what you can. Like any new medium, the metrics are difficult to come by, but marketers can still do the basics, like count the attendees of a room, and add up the number of new followers after an event.</p><h2><a></a>There are brand safety concerns</h2><p>Even if conversations are moderated, there is no way to know what someone is going to say when they go live. The spontaneity has strong appeal, but being live is "a nervous place for brands to play because it is very easy for that to go very wrong," said Karen Staughton, West Coast engagement director at digital agency Grow. "If a brand sponsors or shows up in a room, and somehow something happens in that room, the brand will take the heat for not speaking up or doing something."</p><p>Another issue is creating a safe space. Bullying and other negative behavior have taken place in rooms, which can reflect poorly on brands. "Audio [requires] a more cumbersome process to detect harmful content in real time," said Jessica Dooley, social practice lead at Mindshare. While social listening remains a challenge in social audio, catching instances of bad behavior will be up to the users.</p><p><strong><em>Interested in getting the full report? As a startup, we have had our share of learning lessons and challenges. Thankfully, we've also gotten a lot right. Greene tweeted that she <a href="https://twitter.com/RepMTG/status/1518567498148417536?s=20&amp;t=Rf4sYiZ_BB6dLzz7UVKIiQ">expected her account to be reinstated.</a></p><h3>Misinformation, anxiety</h3><p>Some users <a href="https://twitter.com/GoAngelo/status/1518669068500447232?s=20&amp;t=Rf4sYiZ_BB6dLzz7UVKIiQ">expressed alarm</a> about increased misinformation and disinformation. </p><p>"There are plenty of models for where this site is likely headed. I'm on those sites all day. I cover extremism and lies for a living. You're not gonna like it," tweeted NBC reporter <a href="https://twitter.com/oneunderscore__">Ben Collins. </a></p><p>In a TikTok posted Sunday <a href="https://www.tiktok.com/@bocxtop/video/7087677265261153582?_d=secCgYIASAHKAESPgo8NWGZOwwru2W1bNZwXq3K8lraHwsDhlJfOPLNFKMU08MrSuN7E%2BIxaLeAxCDEibD90KOe2dzLC0pKaGjfGgA%3D&amp;_r=1&amp;checksum=bb51c0ecbc6736fc62bccb806ff99c892e88a8f800e106f7d3463caeee1b9312&amp;is_copy_url=1&amp;is_from_webapp=v1&amp;language=en&amp;sec_uid=MS4wLjABAAAA1_k1HcxU3Hu0yPAYygDI8WgMVZQJ3EIvm0fYR3atI5kCYz70YJXzcmoWJZftzP-i&amp;sec_user_id=MS4wLjABAAAA1_k1HcxU3Hu0yPAYygDI8WgMVZQJ3EIvm0fYR3atI5kCYz70YJXzcmoWJZftzP-i&amp;share_app_id=1233&amp;share_author_id=6638577151062425605&amp;share_link_id=A15EC467-80E8-4594-9079-B598C36F1211&amp;source=h5_m&amp;tt_from=copy&amp;u_code=d3l8b48g8g1lm5&amp;user_id=6638577151062425605&amp;utm_campaign=client_share&amp;utm_medium=ios&amp;utm_source=copy">satirizing</a> those who were excited about the buy, one person says, "And by free speech do you just mean racism?" </p><p>Musk has also said he wants to "authenticate all humans" and thus reduce the number of spam bots on Twitter. </p><p>Redditors worried in <a href="https://www.reddit.com/r/technology/comments/ubjp7g/twitter_to_accept_elon_musks_45_billion_bid_to/">long discussions</a> about information conglomerates and how Musk could play with the financials of the company. Numerous Clubhouse rooms and Twitter Spaces popped up to discuss the news. </p><p>One NFT artist <a href="https://www.instagram.com/p/Ccx58qsMt1U/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link">posted</a> a picture of Musk locking Twitter in a golden cage with the caption "riptwitter." </p><h3>Eat the rich </h3><p>Musk using nearly $45 billion to buy Twitter, and<a href="https://www.npr.org/2022/04/25/1094604406/twitter-elon-musk-deal"> providing $21 billion in cash</a>, inspired a fair amount of leftist frustration.</p><p>"I buy a the Twitter for 41 a billion! I don't pay a the taxes!! Oh!!!," Audrey Armstrong, a writer who runs an Twitter account that focuses on criticizing people in Italian parody, <a href="https://twitter.com/lesbiaudrey/status/1518629650188148736?s=20&amp;t=Rf4sYiZ_BB6dLzz7UVKIiQ">posted</a> in a flurry of tweets focused on the Musk deal. </p><p>"I make a the people forget about a my <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tesla-lawsuits-former-workers-claim-racial-discrimination-sexual-harassment-2022-3">racial discrimination lawsuit</a>!! That's amore!!" Armstrong <a href="https://twitter.com/lesbiaudrey/status/1518669315423326210?s=20&amp;t=WKdoWhhIUoe8JG4wf6Nwbw">added</a>. </p><p>Many directed anger at billionaires writ large and wrote about things they thought Musk could use the money for, including: </p><ul><li>Pay off student loans of everyone in West Virginia several times over, from <a href="https://www.instagram.com/p/CcyQbPeOoOb/?igshid=YmMyMTA2M2Y=">Appalachian podcasters on Instagram</a> </li><li>Fulfill his promise to end world hunger for $6 billion, from Brian Tyler Cohen, progressive podcaster, on <a href="https://twitter.com/NoLieWithBTC/status/1518658761979842560?s=20&amp;t=GKWPklfx8HMUnfT7P3xXkQ">Twitter.</a></li><li>Cover community college for "every American for five years," said Nina Turner, former Ohio state senator running for Congress on <a href="https://twitter.com/ninaturner/status/1518670205186158592?s=20&amp;t=GKWPklfx8HMUnfT7P3xXkQ">Twitter</a>. </li></ul><p>The photo of Musk with Ghislane Maxwell, girlfriend to financier and convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, also <a href="https://twitter.com/lesbiaudrey/status/1518663061296529408?s=20&amp;t=Y46uvS3KZR2kC6WjbreAEA">circulated on Twitter, </a>with people saying they were posting it while they <a href="https://twitter.com/DurbanSurf/status/1518632100542533633?s=20&amp;t=Rf4sYiZ_BB6dLzz7UVKIiQ">still</a> could. </p><p>A <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/elon-musk-denies-that-jeffrey-epstein-toured-spacex-facilities-2020-7">Musk spokesperson said</a> in 2019 Maxwell had "inserted" herself into the photo and that Musk did not know it was being taken. </p><p><strong>Joking it out</strong></p><p>The jokes also came pouring in, many citing Sweeney's jet-tracking Twitter account. </p><p>"That's serious asymmetrical warfare. The kid spent $0 and forced Musk to spend $44,000,000,000" Reddit user KingApologist wrote.</p><p>Another Reddit user, username niikhil, received props for the following: "The worlds richest man owns Twitter. The Second richest man owns Washington post. They both still cant afford a good barber," likely referring to Jeff Bezos' bald head and Musk's often slightly disheveled appearance. </p><p>Some Twitter <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/some-twitter-users-say-quitting-platform-over-elon-musk-deal-2022-4">users have discussed leaving the platform</a>. Washington-based journalist <a href="https://twitter.com/ChelseaCirruzzo">Chelsea Cirruzzo</a> <a href="https://twitter.com/ChelseaCirruzzo">joked</a>, "u won't quit twitter, u have depression :/." </p>

According to Kelly, the machine then propelled her prone body backward so forcefully her legs broke through the wall.
