In an unusual and life-threatening incident, doctors at <keyword id="20177521" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Fortis-Hospital" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Fortis Hospital" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="Fortis Hospital">Fortis Hospital</keyword> in Vasant Kunj, <keyword id="19900881" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="delhi" source="keywords">Delhi</keyword>, found themselves face-to-face with an unexpected patient — a <keyword id="23501754" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="live-cockroach" source="keywords">live cockroach</keyword> lodged inside a 23-year-old man’s <keyword id="22071955" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="small-intestine" source="keywords">small intestine</keyword>. The medical team, led by Dr Shubham Vatsya, Senior Consultant in <keyword id="21383124" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Gastroenterology" source="keywords">Gastroenterology</keyword>, carried out a swift <keyword id="23501755" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="endoscopic-procedure" source="keywords">endoscopic procedure</keyword> to remove the 3-centimetre insect in a daring operation that saved the young man’s life.<br /><h2>A painful surprise</h2>The patient had been experiencing significant <keyword id="20688085" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="abdominal-pain" source="keywords">abdominal pain</keyword> and trouble digesting food for two or three days when he finally sought help. What he didn’t expect was that the source of his discomfort would turn out to be a live cockroach. Upon his admission, Dr Vatsya and his team decided to conduct an Upper Gastrointestinal (GI) Endoscopy to investigate the cause of his symptoms.<br /><br />During the procedure, they discovered the uninvited intruder lurking in the man’s small intestine. "A live cockroach in the small intestine is a life-threatening situation," Dr Vatsya said, noting the urgency of the discovery. "We proceeded immediately with the endoscopy to remove it. If it hadn’t been removed, the cockroach could have caused severe infections and potentially fatal complications."<br /><h2>The peculiar procedure</h2>The extraction, while extraordinary, was surprisingly straightforward. The doctors employed an endoscope, a flexible tube outfitted with two channels — one for infusing air and water, and the other for suction. Dr Vatsya’s team used the suction channel to trap the cockroach, swiftly guiding it up and out of the patient’s digestive tract in under ten minutes.<br /><br />The medical team was equally relieved and intrigued by the unique case. Dr Vatsya speculated that the cockroach may have found its way into the patient’s mouth while he was sleeping, or, more bizarrely, been swallowed unknowingly during a meal.<br /><br />This surprising incident serves as a reminder that life can sometimes deliver the most unexpected challenges. Though rare, cases like this underscore the importance of seeking prompt medical attention when unusual symptoms arise. Thanks to the quick action and precision of Dr Vatsya and his team, the young man walked away from what could have been a far more dangerous situation.<br /><br />While we’re all advised to stay vigilant about what we put into our bodies, sometimes it seems that creepy crawlies find their own way in. Human botfly larvae, for example, burrow under your skin, forming a pus-filled pimple. Meanwhile, thousands of young Loa loa worms can travel throughout your body -even across your eyeball! The following is a transcript of the video.</p><p>In 2018, a cockroach crawled inside a sleeping man's ear and laid an egg sac. Luckily, roaches don't go out of their way to do this, so it doesn't happen very often. But there are a bunch of other unsavory bugs that will lay eggs all over your body - on purpose.</p><p>First up, the human botfly.  These insects, which are native to Central and South America, glue their eggs to mosquitoes and other blood-sucking insects. When the mosquito bites a victim, the eggs hatch.  Then the larvae wriggle into your skin, creating a painful pimple that leaks pus. Or, as the baby botflies call it, lunch. After 5 to 10 weeks, they escape. And not long after that, they reach adulthood, ready to mate and start the cycle all over.</p><p>Another tropical parasite: Tunga penetrans. More commonly known as the sand flea.</p><p>Females burrow into the bottom of your foot to slurp your blood. They start off smaller than a grain of sand...but grow to 2,000 TIMES their size within a week as they swell with your blood and up to 200 eggs. Those eggs fall to the ground and hatch waiting for the next bare foot to pass by.</p><p>But some egg-laying parasites go more than just skin deep. Tapeworms, for example, invade your intestines. Adults can stretch longer than a bowling lane and block up your digestive system. But it gets worse. Because they lay tens of thousands of eggs. Which can hatch and migrate, spreading throughout your lungs, muscles, and even your brain.</p><p>If that sounds gruesome, wait till you hear about the loa loa worm. It can be passed from human to human by hitching a ride inside deerflies. When the flies bite you, the larvae enter through the wound. After five months growing beneath your skin, they reach adulthood and release thousands of embryos a day. The embryos then travel throughout your body. Sometimes you can even see the worms moving under your skin or across your eyeball.</p><p>But not EVERY egg-laying invader is sinister. Face mites are pretty innocuous. They live on pretty much EVERYONE's face...and most people never notice. After all, they feed on facial oil, not flesh. And when it comes time to breed, females lay just a single egg in your pores. Even better, researchers can study your face mites to track how your ancestors migrated across the planet. Because we usually pass them from parent to child, so the mites stay in the family. </p><p>But face mites aren't the only helpful bug around. Green bottle flies might be useful in medicine. They lay eggs inside open wounds. Then the maggots hatch and devour the damaged flesh. That sounds brutal but we might one day be able to harness this process to treat diabetic foot ulcers and other slow-healing wounds. Because when the maggots go to town, they actually clean the area and remove dead tissue. They even secrete proteins that reduce inflammation! </p><p>So maybe botflies, fleas, and tapeworms could learn a thing or two, and make themselves useful if they're going to visit.</p>

In fact, most of them come from your own body, and some can <a href="http://www.techinsider.io/dogs-farms-lower-asthma-risk-2015-11">even be beneficial</a>.</p><p>But sometimes nasty pathogens can creep in from the outside and make you very sick.</p><p><strong>So what is the biggest source of harmful germs in your home?</strong></p><p>Your kitchen sponge, Philip Tierno, a microbiologist and pathologist at the New York University School of Medicine, told Tech Insider.</p><p>That's right. Not your toilet bowl. Not your trashcan. Rather, the object many of us wash our dishes with every single day.</p><p>"That thing is very dirty," Tierno said. "Mainly because you're cleaning up vegetables, carcasses of meat, and all sorts of food stuff that can potentially contain pathogenic [disease-causing] bacteria that will grow in numbers over time."</p><p>Sponges are ideal breeding grounds for microbes because we supply them with a nourishing, warm, moist environment - and tons of food.</p><p>"The moisture assures the good growth, but you also have the nutritive material that you're taking in," Tierno said.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table full"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/blmurch/336000454/">Flickr/blmurch</a></span></p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>Sponges can carry <a href="http://www.mdpi.com/1660-4601/10/9/4060/htm">all kinds of nasty bacteria</a>, including campylobacter, salmonella, staphylococcus, <em>E. coli</em>, and listeria - all of which can cause mild to severe gut and skin infections.</p><p>Campylobacter bacteria, which is commonly found in food such as raw chicken, is by far the biggest contributor to foodborne illness in the US. It affects <a href="http://www.cdc.gov/nczved/divisions/dfbmd/diseases/campylobacter/">more than 1.3 million people</a> here every year.</p><p>Within <a href="http://www.cdc.gov/nczved/divisions/dfbmd/diseases/campylobacter/">two to five days after exposure</a>, campylobacter can ravage the digestive tract, causing diarrhea, cramping, abdominal pain, fever, nausea, and vomiting. It can even cause a life-threatening blood infection in those with compromised immune systems.</p><p>Vegetables may also transfer nasty bugs onto a sponge. This includes <em>E. coli</em>, <a href="http://www.cdc.gov/ecoli/">which can cause</a> diarrhea, urinary tract infections, pneumonia, and other illnesses.</p><p>"Even if you rinse it and use some soap, it's not sufficient to eradicate the germs," Tierno said.</p><p>So how can you ensure that your sponge doesn't cause your next big bout of food poisoning?</p><p>Forget the microwave. <strong>"The b</strong><strong>est way is to put it in a little bleach solution,"</strong> Tierno said. Every time he preps food, he puts a jigger of bleach into a half quart or quart of water, then rinses the sponge with it to prevent cross contamination.</p><p>"It's very potent. It can kill anthrax spores," Tierno said.</p><p>About <a href="http://www.mdpi.com/1660-4601/10/9/4060/htm">56,000 people</a> are sickened by foodborne illness each year in the US. And believe it or not, the primary source of this illness comes from the home.</p><p>So next time you're cleaning up after your chicken dinner, throw that sponge into a pool of bleach water.
