New Delhi [India], August 9 (ANI): Union Minister of Commerce &amp; Industry <keyword id="19895367" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="Piyush-Goyal" source="keywords">Piyush Goyal</keyword> stated that the leather and <keyword id="21599313" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Footwear-industry" source="keywords">footwear industry</keyword> of the country has the potential to raise employment in the sector from the current 40 lakh to 1 crore. The minister stated it while inaugurating the 8th <keyword id="22718849" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="India-International-Footwear-Fair" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="India International Footwear Fair" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="India International Footwear Fair">India International Footwear Fair</keyword> in Delhi on Thursday. He highlighted that the leather and footwear industry has the ability to expand its market domestically and abroad. "We have the world market to capture. We need self-confidence, open mind to accept change" said Goyal. The minister also added that the implementation of Quality Control Orders (QCOs) will help prevent substandard, low-cost leather product imports and help save the Indian Footwear industry from unfair competition. He stated QCOs will help inculcate a spirit of quality among the domestic manufacturers, enabling India to become a world-class manufacturer of quality footwear. On liberalising the QCO guidelines, Goyal said that the Centre will give retailers two years to dispose of the existing footwear stock post application of the order. He also noted that fashion footwear manufacturing up to 72,000 pairs will not have to go through QCOs. Minister Goyal asserted that India is poised to become the market leader in the world. He also expressed hope for the footwear industry to become the world's largest manufacturer. Currently, India is the 2nd largest manufacturer and 9th largest exporter of footwear. The Minister also said that a target of USD 50 billion in exports by 2030 is achievable. He pointed out that QCOs don't apply to exports but the exporters have to meet the quality requirements of their clients. The Minister urged the industry to leverage the Free Trade Agreements (FTAs), especially with ASEAN and European countries and work towards making Indian brands global. Earlier the minister also highlighted that micro and small units under <keyword id="19990810" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="MSME" source="keywords">MSME</keyword> would continue to be exempted from the purview of QCOs. Leather and footwear industry can create 1 crore jobs: Piyush Goyal

The Indian cement industry is on track to reach 5.09 billion tonnes by 2028-29, driven by robust government investment in infrastructure. According to an IANS report originally attributed to Infomerics Ratings, this marks a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 4.9 per cent between 2024 and 2029. In 2022-23, the industry’s market size stood at 3.82 billion tonnes, with a total installed capacity of 622 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) in FY24 and production at 427 million tonnes. Notably, India contributes over 8 per cent to the world’s total installed cement capacity, highlighting its importance in the global market. Despite this, India’s per capita cement consumption is 260 kg—significantly below the global average of 540 kg—indicating substantial room for growth. Globally, the cement market is projected to grow at a CAGR of 4.3 per cent from 2024 to 2032. The sector’s expansion is fuelled by ambitious government initiatives, including an allocation of ₹11.11 lakh crore for infrastructure in FY25 and housing schemes like Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana. The construction sector consumes 55 per cent of cement production, while public infrastructure projects account for the remainder. The industry also plays a critical role in employment, providing direct jobs to over one million people and creating downstream opportunities for about 20,000 individuals per million tonnes of cement produced. Private players dominate the sector, controlling 98 per cent of production capacity, while public sector units hold a mere 2 per cent. Domestic production meets almost all demand, with imports accounting for just 0.2 per cent of total production in FY23. However, exports have declined recently due to reduced global demand and rising competition. India currently has 341 cement manufacturing facilities, including 159 integrated large cement plants, 120 grinding units, and 62 mini cement plants. Cement production has seen steady growth, with a 7.1 per cent increase in September 2024 and a cumulative growth of 1.6 per cent between April and September of FY25, according to the Ministry of Commerce and Industry. This growth aligns with India’s overall industrial performance, which saw a 2 per cent rise in core industries in September, led by cement, steel, coal, and fertilisers. As per Sanjeev Agrawal, President, PHDCCI, “In order to strengthen the share of the manufacturing sector in the country's GDP, we recommend the status quo on the corporate tax rate at 22% for existing companies and 15% for new manufacturing companies incorporated after October 1, 2019. The middle class must be spared from the 30% tax rate and this rate must be applicable only to those with taxable income above Rs. 40 lakh, this will support consumption demand in this country”. In addition to this, PHDCCI also emphasised on strengthening linkages between universities and industries for bettering research and development activities in the country, and also appealed for reducing cost of doing business. Bolster manufacturing sector, consumption this budget: PHDCCI to FinMin

New Delhi, The inter-ministerial board of approval, on request of a developer of an IT/ITeS sector special economic zone, can permit demarcation of non-processing area of that zone, according to an official notification. The inter-ministerial Board of Approval is the highest decision making body on <keyword id="69055" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="special-economic-zones" source="Orion">special economic zones</keyword> (SEZs). It is chaired by the commerce secretary. The <keyword id="6365809" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="commerce-ministry" source="Orion">commerce ministry</keyword>'s notification said that a non-processing area under such SEZs can be used for setting up and operation of businesses engaged in Information Technology (IT) or Information Technology Enabled services (ITeS) sector. For this, the ministry has amended the Special Economic Zones (Fifth Amendment) Rules, 2023. Inserting a new rule, the notification said: "...the Board of Approval, on request of a developer of an IT or ITeS SEZs, may permit demarcation of a portion of the built-up area of an IT or ITeS SEZ as a non-processing area of the IT or ITeS SEZ to be called a non-processing area." In the processing area, units are located for manufacturing of goods or rendering of services. Non-processing areas are where supporting infrastructure is created. It also said that the board would permit the demarcation "only" after repayment, without interest, by the developer. "Demarcation of a non-processing area shall not be allowed if it results in decreasing the processing area to less than fifty per cent of the total area...," it added. The notification also said that the businesses engaged in these zones in a non-processing area would not avail any rights or facilities available to SEZ units. It added that no tax benefits shall be available on operation and maintenance of common infrastructure and facilities of such an IT/ITeS zone. Welcoming the move, Sanjay Dutt, MD &amp; CEO, <keyword id="672851" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="tata-realty-and-infrastructure-ltd" source="Orion">Tata Realty and Infrastructure Ltd</keyword>, said that this revised policy not only facilitates the expansion of companies' office spaces but also extends the benefits of SEZ areas to non-SEZ entities. "It's a proactive move by the government, optimizing the utilization of real estate resources," he said, adding, "presently, the country boasts around 170 million square feet of ready IT SEZ office space in the top 6 cities, with nearly 20 per cent (over 30 million square feet) lying vacant. Additionally, about 10 million square feet of SEZ spaces are under construction and set to be completed within the next 2 years."

Inter-ministerial approval board can permit demarcation of non-processing area under IT sector SEZs

The Ministers agreed to hold the next round of ISMR in India at a mutually convenient time. During their visit, the Indian Ministers also called on Singapore President, Tharman Shanmugaratnam, and Singapore Prime Minister Lawrence Wong. "India and Singapore are important partners of each other. The visit reaffirmed the commitment of both sides to further strengthen their multifaceted partnership," MEA added. Singapore Prime Minister Lawrence Wong has called the India-Singapore Ministerial Dialogue an important platform for strengthening bilateral ties. India, Singapore to focus on advanced manufacturing, connectivity to boost bilateral relations

The report 'Assessing the Net Impact of e-Commerce on <keyword id="19898684" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="employment" source="keywords">Employment</keyword> and Consumer Welfare in India' was launched by Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal. "Plugging in data from our survey, we estimate that online vendors generate 15.8 million jobs, including 3.5 million jobs for women," the report prepared by Pahle India Foundation (PIF), a Delhi-based policy research institute, said. E-commerce, according to the report, has been a key driver of employment generation In India. On an average, online vendors employ 54 per cent more people and almost twice the number of female employees, compared to offline vendors. The report noted that two of the most widely-recognised contributions of e-commerce penetration in the retail sector are --growth in employment and improvements in consumer welfare. It said rather than displacing physical markets, e-commerce is expanding into new territories like tier 3 cities. "Our data shows that a higher percentage of Tier 3 city consumers spend more than Rs 5,000 per month on online shopping as compared to consumers from bigger cities," it said, adding this is the India consumption story, which enables the co-existence of physical and digital retail. The study analysed the impact e-commerce has had on employment and consumer welfare through a pan-India survey of 2,062 online vendors, 2,031 offline vendors, and 8,209 consumers of products from e-commerce websites across 35 cities in 20 states and UTs. According to the report, each e-commerce vendor on an average employs about 9 people, of which 2 are female, while each offline vendor employs about 6 people, of which only 1 is female. It pointed out that there was increase in employment across skill levels, including high-skilled (management, marketing), medium-skilled (customer service, operations), and low-skilled (warehousing, logistics, delivery) functions. The report said that the growth of e-commerce and accompanying digitalisation have fundamentally changed the skill sets and roles required in the industry. "Vendors have experienced improved business performance parameters since listing online, including higher sales and profits," it said. According to the report, 60 per cent and 52 per cent of vendors, respectively, state that their sales and profits have increased since the time they have started selling online. "Overall, more than two thirds of the online vendors interviewed experienced an increase in online sales value and profits in the past year," the report said, adding that 58 per cent saw an increase in both. Barring costs, it said vendors have seen a positive shift in all other aspects of business performance since they started selling online. The report said there is a strong business case for offline vendors to list on e-commerce platforms or pursue an omni-channel strategy. "E-commerce integration has accrued significant benefits to vendors from smaller cities and micro-enterprises," it said. The study also delves into how e-commerce has reshaped consumer behaviour, noting that consumers have shifted to online shopping for reasons that include convenience, product variety, and access. "A highly engaged consumer base is indicated by the fact that more than 50 per cent of all respondents to the survey spent more than two hours on e-commerce platforms a week, and that 70 per cent made a purchase via e-commerce in the last month alone," it said. Speaking at the event, former NITI Aayog Vice Chairman Rajiv Kumar said, e-commerce has revolutionized India's retail landscape. Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation(MoSPI) secretary Saurabh Garg lauded the government's initiatives expanding digital public infrastructure that have enabled the smooth expansion of e-commerce. Online vendors generated 15.8 million jobs in India: e-commerce report

However, a closer look at the sector-wise breakdown reveals divergent trends. Merchandise exports in December demonstrated resilience, growing to USD 38.45 billion, a slight increase from USD 38.08 billion in December 2023. This positive momentum in merchandise exports highlights certain sectors' ability to navigate global challenges and capitalize on opportunities. On the other hand, services exports experienced a dip in December, reaching USD 27.88 billion, down from USD 31.19 billion in the same period last year. The decline in services exports reflects the broader economic challenges and global uncertainties affecting this sector. Services imports, too, registered a decline in December, reaching USD 13.25 billion compared to USD 15.81 billion in December 2023. This reduction in service imports could be a response to various economic factors and changing global dynamics. The overall December imports, considering both merchandise and services, also saw a decline, totalling USD 71.50 billion, down from USD 77.03 billion in December 2023. This decline in imports might be attributed to a combination of factors, including evolving market conditions and economic considerations. Despite the nuanced trade dynamics, the December trade deficit narrowed to USD 5.17 billion, showcasing a positive trend compared to USD 7.75 billion in December 2022. The reduced trade deficit suggests a more balanced trade scenario, where the decline in imports might have contributed to a healthier trade position. These figures depict a complex trade landscape, reflecting the intricate interplay of global economic conditions, sector-specific challenges, and India's adaptability in the face of evolving trade dynamics. India's December trade data: Overall exports declined, merchandise exports grew

Imports in December 2022 also declined to USD 58.24 billion as against USD 60.33 billion in the same month last year. During April-December this fiscal the country's overall exports rose by 9 per cent to USD 332.76 billion. India's exports in December 2022 dipped by 12.2%

As Indian startups face turbulence in the global funding winter, experts on Monday said they need to reserve cash, create a long-term goal and adopt a culture of customer feedback to survive in 2023. On the occasion of the 'National Startup Day', envisioned by Prime Minister <keyword id="6354477" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="narendra-modi" source="Orion">Narendra Modi</keyword> last year, industry experts said that the founders must continuously monitor the trends which are happening in the world. Indian startups fired more than 18,000 employees in 2022 amid a funding winter and macroeconomic uncertainty. "Investing in R&amp;D can be one of the finest ways to actually tackle disruption. Indian startups need to conserve cash & listen to customers, say experts

Despite unfavourable economic conditions in major markets such as the European Union (EU), the US, and West Asian nations, Indian <keyword id="21353395" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="textile-exports" source="keywords">textile exports</keyword> grew by 9.59 per cent compared to the previous year in May 2024, the Confederation of <keyword id="22064995" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-textile" source="keywords">Indian Textile</keyword> Industry (CITI) said in a report. Simultaneously, <keyword id="22064997" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-apparel-exports" source="keywords">Indian apparel exports</keyword> saw a growth of 9.84 per cent during the same period. The CITI in its report highlighted that the cumulative exports of textiles and apparel during May 2024 registered a growth of 9.70 per cent over May last year. The country's overall exports for May 2024 surged to USD 68.29 billion. This was a substantial year-on-year increase of 10.2 per cent, according to data released by the Commerce Ministry on June 14. The analysis noted that during Apr -May' 24, Indian textile exports registered a growth of 6.04 per cent over the previous year, while apparel exports registered a growth of 4.46 per cent during the same time period. The cumulative exports of textiles and apparel during April-May 2024 saw a surge of 5.34 per cent as compared to the same period last year. The recently released export data revealed that sectors such as electronic goods, drugs and pharmaceuticals, organic and inorganic chemicals, engineering goods, petroleum products, plastics &amp; linoleum, cotton yarn/fabs made-ups ( textiles manufactured), handloom products, etc., man-made yarn/fabs./made-ups, handloom products etc. performed well in the exports from the country. Other merchandise products, such as meat, dairy and poultry products, mica, coal and other ores, minerals including processed minerals, RMG of all textiles, tea, coffee, rice, tobacco, carpet and handicrafts, oil seeds; and fruits and vegetables, did well too. On Friday, AshwKumar, President of the Federation of Indian Export Organisations (FIEO), highlighted that a positive trajectory was seen in May 2024, driven by robust order bookings. Among the top ten export markets for India were the US, UAE, Netherlands, UK, China, Singapore, Saudi Arabia, Bangladesh, Germany and France. Considerably, in these markets, the exports registered a double-digit growth rate. Breaking down export data released yesterday, the merchandise exports witnessed a 9.1 per cent rise to USD 38.13 billion, while service exports climbed by 11.7 per cent, reaching USD 30.16 billion. Indian textile exports surge by 9.59% in May despite global economic challenges

<ul><li><keyword id="3480589" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="meesho" source="Orion">Meesho</keyword> has more than 8 lakh registered sellers, with 40% of them from <keyword id="142845" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="tier-ii" source="Orion">Tier II</keyword> cities and beyond. </li><li>Meesho’s integration with <keyword id="5862596" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="ondc" source="Orion">ONDC</keyword> is expected to create a wider market for hyperlocal suppliers. </li><li>Tier II cities contributed 54% of the gross merchandise value of festive season sales this year. </li></ul>Meesho, an e-commerce unicorn in India that primarily caters to Tier II cities has joined the government’s Open Network for <keyword id="1664180" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="digital-commerce" source="Orion">Digital Commerce</keyword> (ONDC) initiative. This will help buyers connect with hyperlocal sellers in creating an inclusive e-commerce ecosystem in the country. To create a more level playing field for small and medium enterprises in India, the <keyword id="6416832" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="ministry-of-commerce-and-industry" source="Orion">Ministry of Commerce and Industry</keyword> launched the ONDC portal last year. The pilot was available to sellers in five cities - Delhi, <keyword id="6354321" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="bengaluru" source="Orion">Bengaluru</keyword>, Coimbatore, Bhopal and Shillong, according to PTI reports. ONDC is an open network portal that helps micro enterprises gain more visibility in comparison to e-commerce behemoths like Amazon and <keyword id="6354742" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="flipkart" source="Orion">Flipkart</keyword>. E-commerce startup Meesho’s integration with ONDC is expected to fuel discoverability of products for consumers while creating a wider market for hyperlocal suppliers. “With a shared goal to empower small sellers and give a fillip to hyperlocal businesses, the integration will boost our efforts to democratise internet commerce for everyone. ONDC will also play an important role in expanding India’s e-commerce sector by bringing more consumers online. We have been working closely with ONDC to ensure that the integration is smooth and the user experience remains seamless,” said <keyword id="3480590" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="vidit-aatrey" source="Orion">Vidit Aatrey</keyword>, founder and CEO of Meesho. The pilot phase of Meesho’s integration with ONDC will first be launched in Bangalore and gradually rolled out in other locations over the coming months. Meesho’s adoption of ONDC is a reflection of the increasing demand in Tier II cities coupled with a spurt in the number of retailers from these cities. Festive period sales become a Tier II phenomenon with 64% shoppers coming from these cities, according to a Redseer report. The cities also contributed 54% of the gross merchandise value during the festive sales this year. With the growing importance of social e-commerce, unicorn Meesho was the second-largest contributor in order volume during the first week of festive sales in September, with a majority of its sales coming from Tier II and Tier III <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/business/ecommerce/news/flipkart-group-leads-e-commerce-festive-sales-meesho-is-second-largest-contributor-in-order-volume-redseer/articleshow/94701015.cms">cities</a>. Meesho says that 80% of its 14 crore annual transacting customers are from Tier II cities. We are pleased to onboard Meesho as its deep capabilities in small towns will set the network flywheel in motion and take ONDC closer to our goals. Vocal for local: Online commerce unicorn Meesho joins ONDC to aid local sellers

The issue will come up during the meeting between Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal and Minister of Energy of Saudi Arabia Prince Abdul Aziz Bin Salman on September 18-19. This committee, it said, is one of the two ministerial verticals established under the framework of the India-Saudi Arabia Strategic Partnership Council, which is headed at the highest level by the Prime Minister of India and the Crown Prince of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Goyal to visit Saudi Arabia for ministerial meet of economic, investments committee

According to <keyword id="6365809" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="commerce-ministry" source="Orion">Commerce Ministry</keyword> data, India's merchandise exports went up by 1.62 per cent to $33.92 billion in August 2022 against $33.38 billion recorded in the corresponding period of last year. <keyword id="35091" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="IMPORTS" source="Orion">Imports</keyword> rose by 37.28 per cent on year-on-year basis, thus widening the trade deficit. Meanwhile the country's overall exports (including merchandise and services) in August 2022 stood at $57.47 billion, showing a growth of 6.75 per cent over the corresponding period. Overall imports in August 2022 were estimated to be $75.84 billion, showing a growth of 33.15 per cent over corresponding period of last year.
