The findings suggest that as melting glaciers add vast amounts of much fresh water to the world's oceans, the current system in the Atlantic is likely to weaken over time.</p><p>This system, called the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC), moves ocean water north and south in the Atlantic and mixes surface water with that from deep below. It's partially responsible for western Europe's warm and wet climate.</p><p>The UN report concluded that "the AMOC is projected to weaken in the 21st century" under every climate-change scenario. Hundreds of millions of people could be displaced.</a></em></p><p>"We are definitely going into a world where AMOC is getting weaker," Francesco Muschitiello, the author of a different study about the AMOC, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/day-after-tomorrow-was-right-and-wrong-about-climate-shifts-2019-3">previously told Business Insider</a>.</p><p>As that happens, Europe could get colder, drier weather, and the tropics could experience stronger hurricanes.</p><h2>Why melting glaciers and warming oceans weaken ocean currents</h2><p>Scientists liken the AMOC to a kind of water conveyor belt.</p><p>Once warmer water reaches the area around the UK, it cools and sinks to the bottom of the Labrador and Nordic Seas. Then that cold water makes a U-turn and snakes its way along the ocean floor, all the way down to Antarctica's Southern Ocean.</p><p>When the AMOC is flowing quickly, western Europe enjoys a wet and warm climate. Salty water is dense, so it sinks easily. But as Greenland and Antarctica's ice sheets melt, along with glaciers around the world, more fresh water is joining the AMOC.</p><p>That <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/greenland-approaching-threshold-of-irreversible-melting-2019-1">melting is happening quickly</a>, the UN report confirmed. Greenland's ice is melting six times faster now than it was four decades ago, according to <a href="https://www.pnas.org/content/early/2019/04/16/1904242116">an April study</a> - the ice sheet is sloughing off an estimated 286 billion tons of ice per year. In the 1980s, Antarctica lost 40 billion tons of ice annually. In the last decade, that number jumped to an average of 252 billion tons per year.</p><p>The addition of all that fresh water makes the salty surface water lighter and less likely to sink, <a href="https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/slow-motion-ocean-atlantics-circulation-is-weakest-in-1-600-years/">clogging up the circulation's flow</a> and weakening the AMOC.</p><h2>A weaker AMOC could mean more extreme weather</h2><p>The authors of the UN report, which focuses on the state of the world's oceans and cryosphere (the frozen parts of the planet) say they're somewhat confident that the AMOC has already weakened relative to the period from 1850-1900.</p><p>According to <a href="https://www.nature.com/articles/s41586-018-0007-4.epdf?author_access_token=fsib90gIobI_Agb9Y6Dv_tRgN0jAjWel9jnR3ZoTv0MAQC0usmARmECubT0sv_73uaai5H7Fy0aRKV4rH49xk-nG4CZmf52MUw8oGrE-ospQrzV3yPTNbpOmvENmVJ5M7TaTsKJASsuLaOE-wy0tVw%3D%3D">a 2018 study</a>, the AMOC is the <a href="https://grist.org/article/relax-the-day-after-tomorrow-isnt-going-to-happen-like-tomorrow/">weakest it's been in at least 1,600 years</a>.</p><p>That weakening is likely to cause changes in our global climate, according to the report, including more storms in northern Europe as well as a decrease in the amount of organic matter produced and circulated in the north Atlantic's marine food web. </p><p>It would also lead to less summer rainfall in southern Asian and the central African Sahel, so parts of central and west Africa could experience more drought conditions.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span><a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/gsfc/6127588860/">NASA</a></span></p><p class="caption">Four tropical cyclones, Katia, Lee, Maria and Nate, were seen in the Atlantic Ocean basin on September 8, 2011.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>"We'll see more extreme weather patterns for sure," Muschitiello said. "Europe will get colder and drier in the long run. There will be surplus of heat in subtropics, which is important for hurricane formation."</p><p>When subtropical waters are warmer, that contributes to more frequent and intense hurricanes in the Atlantic, since warm air holds more water vapor - and that additional moisture <a href="https://www.ucsusa.org/global-warming/science-and-impacts/impacts/hurricanes-and-climate-change.html">provides fuel for hurricanes</a>.</p><p>A weakening in the AMOC would also cause sea levels to rise along along the northeast coast of North America.</p><h2>Could the AMOC ever stop completely?</h2><p>In the 2004 film "The Day After Tomorrow," the AMOC stops almost overnight and an ice age descends on Europe and North America. People freeze to death in the streets, helicopters fall out of the sky, and a massive tidal wave engulfs New York City.</p><p>Those effects are not scientifically accurate and were hyperbolized in the film, of course, but the idea that Atlantic water circulation could shut down isn't wholly outside the realm of possibility. It's just highly unlikely.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>20th Century Fox</span></p><p class="caption">In the 2004 movie, "The Day After Tomorrow," the AMOC shuts down completely.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>According to Muschitiello, there are "reconstructions that suggest that the AMOC stopped entirely in the past, and that these major distortions of the AMOC led to the coldest events ever recorded."</p><p>But such an occurrence would require a huge amount of melt water - the past distortions Muschitiello is referring to happened after large swarms of icebergs broke off glaciers and floated into the north Atlantic ocean. Greenhouse-gas emissions are not likely to increase that dramatically, though.</p><p>The authors of the UN report also concluded that "a collapse is very unlikely." New York City and Philadelphia are under a winter weather advisory starting at 1 a.m. on Thursday, while Boston is under a blizzard warning starting at the same time.</p><p>While snowfall is expected to grind traffic and air travel to a halt on Thursday, the bigger problem is <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/cold-weather-bomb-east-coast-worst-youve-ever-seen-2018-1">the freezing temperatures set to descend on the region</a> in the storm's wake. The circulation associated with the massive storm will drag frigid air sitting over Canada's Arctic south, plunging temperatures across the Northeast to below zero Farenheit. </p><p>Here's where the storm will hit where you live, and what to expect: </p>

Here's when the 'bomb cyclone' will hit, how cold it will be, and how much snow will fall on the East Coast

<p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div><ul><li><strong>Bomb cyclone, explosive bombogenesis, and polar vortex are real meteorological terms.</strong></li><li><strong>But the weather phenomena they describe aren't as uncommon as the words might suggest - there are probably 40-50 storms in the northern hemisphere that qualify as bombs every year.</strong></li><li><strong>The cold air brought by the polar vortex is a real reason to be concerned.</strong></li></ul><p><br>A "bomb cyclone" is <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/cold-weather-bomb-east-coast-snow-record-lows-2018-1">headed for the Northeast</a>.</br></p><p>If you're wondering whether that term was only&#xa0;<a href="https://twitter.com/search?q=%22bomb%20cyclone%22%20term&amp;src=typd">created to make you pay attention</a> to the weather, you're not alone.</p><p>But "bomb cyclone" is a <a href="http://glossary.ametsoc.org/wiki/Bomb">real meteorological term</a> - as are the "explosive bombogenesis" and "polar vortex" coming along with this storm. Those names can make the phenomena sound more intense than the normal (though still potentially dangerous) winter events they describe. But the cold that comes with the polar vortex is no joke.</p><p>The term <strong>bomb cyclone</strong> <a href="https://twitter.com/MJVentrice/status/948595676111360000">dates back</a> to a <a href="http://journals.ametsoc.org/doi/pdf/10.1175/1520-0493%281980%29108%3C1589%3ASDCOT%3E2.0.CO%3B2">1980 paper by Frederick Sanders and John Gyakum</a>, which described the phenomenon as a "bomb." That sounds dramatic, but it actually refers to an extratropical surface cyclone: a storm occurring outside of tropics, usually between 30 and 60 degrees latitude if it happens in the Northern Hemisphere, whose central pressure falls at least 24 millibars over a 24-hour period.</p><p><strong>Central pressure</strong> is the measure of how much the atmosphere in the middle of a storm weighs, and it's one of the key indicators of any cyclone's intensity. The lower the air pressure in the middle of the storm, the more intense that cyclone is. Normal air pressure <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/capital-weather-gang/wp/2018/01/03/no-need-to-duck-and-cover-this-is-the-bomb-cyclone-explained/?nid&amp;utm_term=.f113e65a01cf">is about</a> 1010 millibars; when central pressure is lower than that, things become more turbulent, with more air movement and wind kicking up.</p><p>This particular storm looks like it's going to be intense, potentially dropping 45 millibars in 24 hours.</p><p>That could put it on an intensity level close to that of Hurricane Sandy.</p><p>When a storm undergoes a rapid pressure drop, that's known as "<strong>explosive bombogenesis</strong>." It happens on average between 40 and 50 times in the Northern Hemisphere each year, <a href="https://twitter.com/RyanMaue/status/948599901994221568">according to meteorologist Ryan Maue</a>.</p><p>A storm that becomes this intense in such a quick period of time is worth paying attention to. The flooding and wind gusts that will come with the current weather system will be enough to down power lines. That's especially bad when it's really cold out - and if you've stepped outside on the East Coast lately, enough said.</p><p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div><p>The intense cold is likely to become worse in the aftermath of the storm, due to an expanded <strong>polar vortex</strong>.</p><p>The term&#xa0;<a href="http://glossary.ametsoc.org/wiki/Polar_vortex">polar vortex</a>, which most of us didn't hear much about until 2014, describes the swirling low pressure <a href="http://www.nws.noaa.gov/os/cold/polar_vortex.shtml">masses of cold air that always surround Earth's poles</a>, according to the National Weather Service.</p><p>Sometimes, that mass of air expands and gets pushed south, carried along with the <a href="http://glossary.ametsoc.org/wiki/Polar-front_jet_stream">jet stream</a>, a stream of wind that extends around the hemisphere and divides the air masses in the polar region from those further south.</p><p>The air circulation coming with this imminent storm could help pull the jet stream and even more arctic air south, bringing temperatures to parts of the US that are simply&#xa0;<a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/when-is-it-too-cold-to-go-outside-2018-1">too cold for people to safely be outside.</a></p><div></div>    <div class="margin-top">        <h3>NOW WATCH: <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/what-is-el-nino-la-nina-weather-hurricanes-storms-2017-10">How El Niño and La Niña affect weather</a></h3>        <div>                    </div>    </div></hr>

Although lightning with thunderstorms are not unusual, the residents of Lucknow faced a harrowing night because of high frequency. <br /><br />The Met officials said there was lightning for 11 and half hours intermittently from 7.40 p.m. to 7.10 a.m. <br /><br />However, the India Meteorological Department (<keyword id="6366970" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="imd" source="Orion">IMD</keyword>) does not have data on the number of lightning strikes between these hours and any previous records. <br /><br />Atul Kumar Singh, a senior scientist at IMD Lucknow, said that movement of cloud mass is comparatively slower during monsoon. <br /><br />"Cyclonic circulations over north-west Madhya Pradesh and the monsoon trough was slightly to the south of its normal position due to which there was abundant moisture supply from Bay of Bengal over the state of Uttar Pradesh in the lower troposphere. <br /><br />"At the same time there was an active western disturbance in the middle troposphere which was interacting with low level easterly due to this synoptic setting up this kind of rainfall activities in Uttar Pradesh," he explained. <br /><br />Noted environmentalist Prof Venkatesh Dutta from the Department of Environmental Science at the Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar University, said: "Lightning occurred owing to the fact of intense heating of the Earth's surface and atmosphere. Such type of extreme weather events undoubtedly reflects the impacts of rising atmospheric temperature and climate change. August was the hottest-ever recorded in Lucknow and Uttar Pradesh, and the heat intensified cloud activities." <br /><br />Virendra Singh Yadav, a retired deputy director of the Geological Survey of India, said: "Lucknow and adjoining areas may also experience an increase in the severity and frequency of these incidents in future. Hence, there is a need for prevention, preparedness and to invest in Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) which will save lives, livestock, property and infrastructure. It is a wakeup call to us by nature. <br /><br />"Lightning is of three types. The first is thundercloud or intra-cloud lightning. The second is cloud-to-cloud or Inter-cloud lightning and third is cloud-to-ground lightning (CG). The third type of lightning takes a toll on lives and property, and therefore, is of more concern to us. However, inter-cloud and intra-cloud lightning are also dangerous as they may hit aircrafts. <br /><br />"Its peak power and total energy are very high, with the peak power discharge in the order of a 100 million watts per metre of the channel and the peak channel temperature approaching 30,000 degrees Celsius. Peak currents in a lightning discharge range up to hundreds of kilo amperes (kA) with its typical value being 40 kA." <br /><br />Another scientist said: "Owing to global warming, we are observing the increasing number of hot days in a year which, when combined with rain, leads to occurrence of more intense thunderstorms and lightning of greater intensity."<br />
