The rain gods went a tad bit crazy over <keyword id="19895282" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="mumbai" source="keywords">Mumbai</keyword> yesterday, emptying buckets of rain from the heavens. In the span of a few hours, between 1 AM and 7 AM last night and early this morning, the city has reportedly recorded over 300 mm of rains in various parts of Mumbai. And these downpours were enough to bring the financial capital’s creaky infrastructure to its knees. Several key roads, including those near King's Circle in Dadar, were submerged underwater, causing traffic gridlock and disrupting commutes. The relentless rain caused severe waterlogging in several other areas too, with reports of knee-deep water in Buntara Bhavan in Kurla East and Powai. This led to the diversion of many BEST buses from their regular routes, causing further inconvenience for commuters. Flight operations at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport were also impacted. Airlines like IndiGo and Vistara advised passengers to expect delays and heavy traffic congestion while travelling to the airport. IndiGo even offered passengers flying into or out of Mumbai the option to rebook their flights or get a full refund due to the weather conditions. Train services, a lifeline for Mumbaikars, were not spared either. The Central Railway's suburban network faced delays due to waterlogging at stations like CSMT, Churchgate, and LTT. However, the Western Railway managed to clear tracks using high-capacity water pumps, ensuring normal operations in their suburban section. Further, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) prioritised student safety by declaring a holiday for the first session in all BMC, government, and private schools and colleges within their jurisdiction. The decision on afternoon classes was to be made later based on the evolving situation, but a holiday has been declared for all schools and colleges today. Citizens took to social media to share their experiences, posting videos and updates on waterlogged streets and areas to avoid. However, Mumbai’s skirmish with the torrential rains is hardly over yet. <h2>Heavy rains to continue pounding Mumbai and nearby districts </h2>The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast up to widespread rains accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning over various parts of Maharashtra over the next five days. During this period, heavy rains (64.5 mm-115.5 mm) are likely over Konkan, Goa and Madhya Maharashtra until Friday. Mumbai’s Regional Meteorological Centre had earlier issued a yellow alert for rain in Mumbai and surrounding areas. With heavy rain expected to continue, citizens are advised to stay cautious and avoid venturing out unless absolutely necessary. Apart from the Maharashtra capital, other districts like Thane, Palghar, Pune, Ratnagiri, Dhule and Raigad will all be in for similarly heavy rains today. <h2>Impacts due to heavy rains</h2><ul><li>Water logging/inundation in most parts of low lying areas and river banks</li><li>Occasional reduction in visibility due to heavy rainfall</li><li>Disruption to road, rail and ferry transport</li><li>Local disruption of municipal services such as water and electricity etc</li><li>Possible uprooting of weak trees and collapse of old and unmaintained structures.</li><li>Damage to horticulture and standing crops due to water inundation and gusty winds</li><li>Minor damage to kutcha houses/walls and huts</li><li>Occasional gusty winds with speed reaching 35-45 gusting to 55 kmph along and off the coast resulting in possibilities of damage to vulnerable/temporary structures</li><li>Possibility of landslide/mudslides and rock falls in hilly areas</li><li>Rough sea conditions along the coast</li></ul>Residents must be cautious and prepared for the inclement weather conditions in Mumbai. At least 250 commuters stranded in two trains between Byculla and Masjid Bunder stations on the CR were rescued by police and disaster teams with rubber boats sailing on the flooded tracks. In some areas in south Mumbai, Kandivali, Dahisar, Kurla, Parel, Dadar, Wadala and Sion, water rushed into ground-floor homes, shops or offices in south Mumbai as incessant rains continued all day, and the subways in Dahisar, Malad and Andheri were flooded preventing east-west movement of traffic. Heavy rainfall causes a minor landslide in Malabar Hills

It has already contracted drones to keep an eye on the Virar-Nalasopara area, which is prone to water logging. Technology vs the monsoon Drones are already used to <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/mumbai-must-brace-for-floods-this-week-says-a-private-weather-forecaster/articleshow/70029004.cms">predict</a> weather patterns and rainfall. But, this is the first time that the governments are using drones for traffic surveillance and keep a check on water logging. In Delhi, the two-judge bench of Justice GS Sistani and Justice Jyoti Singh said, "We have no hesitation in saying that all the departments would cooperate with each other to ensure that citizens are not inconvenienced during the coming monsoon." The contractors selected by the government will deploy drones with cameras to areas that are known to be vulnerable, and send images back to the data collection point. The operators at the data centers will then decide whether or not there is a risk of water logging at the moment and plan the next action. Before deploying any drones, the police has to approve the use of air space. So far, the Western Railways has only gotten permission for the Virar-Nalasopara area even though other stretches like Frant Road, Prabhadevi, Dadar and Bandra-Khar are also flood prone areas. Too much water or not enough In Delhi, the monsoon is a double-edged sword. There’s waterlogging, on the one hand, and a <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/every-household-in-india-will-get-water-supply-by-2024-under-the-jal-jeevan-mission-says-nirmala-sitharaman/articleshow/70086396.cms">shortage of water</a>, on the other. The Delhi High Court has suggested that the city use the opportunity of monsoons to harvest water in water clogged areas, to hit two birds with one stone. Drones are going to help unclog India’s water logged cities this monsoon

At least four persons were killed and one went missing in Mumbai and Thane as heavy rain clobbered the country's commercial capital since Monday night with the state government declaring a holiday in the city and the <keyword id="6361772" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="mumbai-metropolitan-region">Mumbai Metropolitan Region</keyword> areas, officials said here on Tuesday. The day was marked with flooding in several parts of the city, a major landslide on the Western Express Highway, an incident of a double house crash, over 100 trees crashing and several emergency incidents of electric short-circuits. In the double house crash incident in Santacruz, Rekha M. Kakade and her 18-month old infant daughter Jahnavi were washed away and drowned in a swollen drain. Another daughter Shivanya was rescued safely but a third daughter is still missing, said BMC Disaster Control. <keyword id="9701050" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="rakib-a-mandal">Rakib A. Mandal</keyword>, 15, was electrocuted and died on the spot when he came in contact with a live wire of street light on Ghodbunder Road in Thane, while a man was washed away in the floods in Navi Mumbai, said the local police. Mumbai city recorded 25.2 cms while the suburbs notched 26.8 cms of rain in the past 24 hours, throwing normal life out of gear in Mumbai, Thane, Palghar and Raigad (the MMR areas), and catching commuters unaware. The Central Railway's Harbour Line was stopped from the Kurla-Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus and trains crawled on the main lines, but <keyword id="9402731" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="the-western-railway">the Western Railway</keyword> suspended services between Bandra-Churchgate, owing to flooding in Dadar and surrounding areas. After rains subsided in the afternoon, all train services resumed normal operations. A massive landslide on the Western Express Highway between Kandivali-Malad paralysed south-bound traffic at dawn on Tuesday, but there were no casualties. The Mithi River was swollen at Dahisar, Borivali, Kandivali and Goreagaon and running above the danger level, forcing many on their banks to evacuate their dwellings with the authorities remaining alert for any eventuality. The main subways in Khar, Andheri, Malad and Dahisar were also flooded and all vehicular traffic stopped on both sides. The Mumbai-Ahmedabad Highway, the old Mumbai-Pune highway, major or arterial roads in Mumbai, Thane, Palghar and Raigad were heavily waterlogged or flooded, stranding many vehicles in 3-4 feet deep waters, and causing traffic snarls. Soon afterwards, the water levels receded from dawn on, the <keyword id="6361126" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="western-railway">Western Railway</keyword> and Central Railway, which had their suburban and long-distance services either paralysed or badly hit, limped back to normalcy with limited operations. Over 18 killed in Mumbai rain-related incidents , say officials

Mumbai, July 15 (IANS) For the third consecutive day, heavy rain continued to lash Mumbai and its suburbs with incidents of waterlogging getting reported from some spots without dislocation of normal life, officials said here on Wednesday. According to BMC Disaster Cell, south Mumbai notched 12.16 cm rain while the suburbs recorded 9.66 cm rain, coming to a seasonal total of 51.97 per cent and 45.99 per cent, respectively, as per the IMD. The BMC's rain-gauges measured 8.92 cm rain in the city, 4.84 cm in the eastern suburbs and 7.51 cm in the western suburbs, giving a seasonal total rainfall of 37.74 per cent till date. Following overnight rains, there was waterlogging in some areas like Wadala, Dadar and Matunga, while the Andheri subway was also flooded, resulting in minor traffic diversions. The BMC Disaster Cell said that 12 big and small trees fell, few houses were damaged, besides 21 complaints of short-circuit, but there were no casualties. However, at around 4 a.m., a fire broke out on the first floor of nine-storied Maker Bhavan-1 in the Fort area of south Mumbai, which was extinguished in three hours, with no casualties. In Navi Mumbai and Western suburbs too experienced heavy rains overnight. Western express highway is flooded with Versova and Andheri are water logged already. Low lying areas of Dadar and Sion are also water-logged. Lifeline Stalled The train service which is referred to as ‘Mumbai’s lifeline’, has stopped early morning today as all the three lines—Western, Central and Harbour lines have been shut down. In fact, around 11:52 am, the city is expecting a high tide of 4.5 meters by 11:52 am. Over 50 flights from the Mumbai airport have been cancelled and over 50 others are diverted due to heavy rains, <a href="https://www.moneycontrol.com/news/india/mumbai-rains-live-updates-waterlogging-suburban-local-trains-traffic-monsoon-4148461.html">say reports</a>. While the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) had predicted intermittent to moderate rains this week, private weather forecaster Skymet sounded off an alarm saying that there could be flooding in the city between July 3 to 5 as it expects 200 mm or more of rainfall. New Delhi, June 2 (IANS) A week after a raging cyclone wreaked havoc in West Bengal, the country is now bracing to face another cyclone which is headed towards the coastline of Maharashtra and Gujarat. "Nisarga" currently lies as a depression 490 km from Mumbai, 280 km from Goa's capital city and 710 km from Surat district in Gujarat. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has said that the depression intensifed into a deep depression at 5:30 a.m. on Tuesday. It is now slated to further turn into a cyclonic storm in 12 hours and then into a severe cyclonic storm in subsequent 12 hours. Low pressure, depression and deep depression are the first three levels used by the IMD to classify cyclones based on their intensity. It is likely to cross north Maharashtra and south Gujarat coasts between Harihareshwar town in Raigad district and Daman as a severe cyclonic storm on Wednesday. IMD's Director General Mrutyunjay Mohapatra has said that the severe cyclonic storm will have a wind speed of 90-105 kmph when it crosses the coast on June 3. According to Roxy Mathew Koll, a climate scientist at the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology, it will be the first-ever cyclone in recorded history to hit the Maharashtra coast in June. Whereas, as per another researcher at the same institute, 'Nisarga' will be only the second cyclone in recorded history that will be hitting the Maharashtra coast in the pre-monsoon season i.e. April-June. "The one and only cyclone in the past that hit Maharashtra coast in the pre-monsoon season was May 1961 cyclone," Vineet Kumar said. The IMD Director General also said that the cyclonic storm will affect the coastal districts of Maharashtra, including Mumbai, more than Gujarat and neighbouring states. "As per our predictions, Maharashtra coastal districts like Sindhudurg, Ratnagiri, Thane, Raigad, Mumbai and Palgarh will be more affected by it." The Central Water Commission has sounded flood alert for Sindhudurg, Ratnagiri, Thane, Mumbai, Palgarh and Nasik districts of Maharashtra, Daman district of union territory of Daman and Dui, Silvassa district of Dadar and Nagar Haveli and Valsad district of Gujarat. There could be inundation in low lying areas, townships, and city areas. Wind speed could also cause damage to trees, telephone, and electric poles, Mohapatra warned. Due to its influence, the east central Arabian Sea and south east Arabian Sea is currently rough. Cyclone 'Nisarga': Storm activity intensifies in Arabian Sea

Mumbai/Raigad, June 3 (IANS) After a wait of 72 hours, Cyclone Nisarga made a thumping landfall at Shriwardhan-Dive Agar in Raigad district, hitting coastal Maharashtra with full fury, officials said. "The eye of the storm is around 60 km away, it has hit Raigad district at a speed of over 100kmph. Now, it is proceedings towards Uran," said Ratnagiri Collector Nidhi Choudhari in a statement. Uran is in the northern-part of Raigad, barely a couple of kilometres from south-central Mumbai which is dotted with towering skyscrapers and slums standing cheek-by-jowl, both at risk in the cyclone, close to the angry churning Arabian Sea. Several hours before the landfall, Nisarga had already announced its impending arrival with heavy rain in the entire coastal region of Palghar, Thane, Mumbai, Raigad, Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg, accompanied by strong gales of upto 60-70 kmph since Wednesday morning. Many scores of trees were uprooted, portions of roofs or protective coverings of homes and cottages were blown off in the entire Konkan region, while several vehicles were crushed under fallen trees in Mumbai and Thane. Big and small trees were blown off their roots in south Mumbai's Colaba and Churchgate, some in the suburbs and Thane, while huge waves lashed the jetties at Gateway of India, Bhaucha Dhakka, and popular beaches at Girgaum Chowpatty, Dadar, Juhu, Versova, Madh, Marve, Gorai on the city's west coast. A medium-size ship was tossed in the waves and got stuck in the ground off Mirya Beach in Ratnagiri, but there were no reports of any casualties. Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray along with other ministers and officials continue to monitor the unfolding cyclonic situation while Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar has called up all coastal district collectors and sought ground reports from them. Rescue teams of NDRF and SDRF, besides the army, navy, air force, coast guard, police, fire brigade, along with expert divers have been on standby at various points in Mumbai to handle any flood like situation. Maharashtra Fishermen's Association President Damodar Tandel said that many fishing villages on the entire coastal belt have suffered huge damages due to the storm. "As per the latest information, most of our fishing boats were moored safely since the past couple of days, but the real damage will be known only after the storm recedes. There are no reports of any casualties or missing fisherfolk," Tandel told IANS. The IMD has already declared a Red Alert for Raigad, Mumbai, Thane, Palghar, Nashik, Dhule and Nandurbar - which is the expected path of Cyclone Nisarga on its land odyssey. Due to overnight rains, several low lying and coastal areas of Mumbai and Thane, besides other districts experienced inundation, but there were no disruptions as most people kept off roads in their homes. The Mumbai International Airport Ltd will operate only 19, including 8 incoming services, of the scheduled 50 daily domestic flights in view of the cyclone on Wednesday, said an official. Several long-distance trains on the Central Railway and Western Railway have been rescheduled to avoid the cyclone. With strict police deployment in the city and its beaches, most Mumbaikars have chosen to remain indoors, catching the real-life cyclone drama on their television sets. For Maharashtra, the new precautions over Cyclone Nisarga has come as a double-lockdown coupled with the Covid-19 restrictions already implemented since over two months. Cyclone Nisarga's Maha landfall full of fury

Mumbai, June 3 (IANS) Mumbai looked set to escape the fury of Cyclone Nisarga which made a thumping wet landfall at Shriwardhan-Dive Agar in Maharashtra's Raigad on Wedesday afternoon, officials indicated. As per the latest India Meteorological Department bulletin, the cyclone which was expected to move towards Mumbai-Thane-Palghar, has apparently veered off to the east and moving towards Pune. "Nisarga lay centred over coastal Maharashtra, close to east-southeast of Alibaug, 75 kms south-east of Mumbai (Colaba) and 65 kms west of Pune. Current intensity (near center) 90-100 kmph gusting to 110 kmph," said the IMD. From the changed direction, the cyclone is likely to head towards Nashik, Jalgaon and then onto Madhya Pradesh, officials said, even as Nisarga seemed to have missed the state capital by a whisker. "The eye of the storm is around 60 km away, it has hit Raigad district at a speed of over 100 kmph. Now, it is proceedings towards Uran," said Ratnagiri Collector Nidhi Choudhari soon after the landfall. However, barring three persons sustaining minor injuries when a tin roof blew off in Santacruz, there are no reports of any casualties so far. The collateral damage include scores of uprooted trees, several vehicles getting crushed in Mumbai and other parts of the Konkan, electric or power poles getting knocked down or roofs blowing away as people remained crouched indoors. As a precautionary measure, over 13,000 people were evacuated in Raigad, some 2,000 in Mumbai and some more in Ratnagiri, Thane and Palghar, mostly from low-lying or risk-prone areas, and those living in 'kuchha' structures. Big and small trees were uprooted and crashed in south Mumbai's Colaba and Churchgate crushing at least two vehicles, while heavy waves lashed the jetties at Gateway of India, Bhaucha Dhakka, and popular beaches at Girgaum Chowpatty, Dadar, Juhu, Versova, Madh, Marve, Gorai on the city's west coast. At least 10 crew members stranded aboard a merchant ship - which was tossed in the waves and ran aground near Mirkawada fishing village in Ratnagiri - were safely rescued by local fishermen and Indian Coast Guard.
