Hyderabad (Telangana) [India], February 22 (ANI): A leading weather scientist and geological expert has warned that the Indian tectonic plate is moving about 5 cm every year, leading to accumulation of stress along the Himalayas and increasing the possibility of major seismic events -- earthquakes -- in the coming days. Speaking to on Tuesday, Dr N Purnachandra Rao, the chief scientist and seismologist at the Hyderabad-based National Geophysical Research Institute (NGRI), said, "The Earth's surface comprises various plates that are constantly in motion. The Indian plate is moving about 5 cm every year, resulting in the accumulation of stress along the Himalayas and raising the possibility of major earthquakes." "We have a strong network of 18 seismograph stations in Uttarakhand. The region, referred to as the seismic gap between Himachal and the western part of Nepal, including Uttarakhand, is prone to earthquakes that might occur any time," the chief scientist added. An earthquake of magnitude 3.6 occurred 56 kms north of Dharamshala, Himachal Pradesh, at 10.38 pm on Monday, the National Centre for Seismology stated. The epicentre was at a depth of 10 kms beneath the earth's surface, the agency said. "An earthquake of magnitude 3.6 occurred 56km north of Dharamshala, Himachal Pradesh at around 10:38 pm, yesterday. The depth of the earthquake was 10 km below the ground," the NCS said in a statement. On February 19, an earthquake struck the town of Nandigama in Andhra Pradesh's NTR district. One of the witness accounts from Chittagong defined the quake as ‘very strong’ on the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre’s (EMSC) website, as cited by Reuters. EMSC pegged the quake’s magnitude as 5.8, but earlier it had announced it to be 6.0 and also said that the epicentre was about 126 kilometres south-east of Aizawl in northeastern India. There has been no report of loss of life or damage to property so far. The quake, which was also felt in several northeastern states, was epicentered near the boundary with Myanmar near Mizoram, as per data shared by the department. It was recorded at 5.15 am, at a depth of 35 km, the data showed. The northeastern region sits on a high seismic zone, making earthquakes frequent in the area. This is all because it’s located near the boundary of the Indian plate and the Burmese microplate marked by the Andaman Trench. The north-east end of Port Blair is also home to the only volcanoes in India — the Barren Island Volcano and Narcondam.

The impact in Delhi around the first earthquake was around 5 on the richter scale. The aftershock that followed the massive earthquake measured 6.6 on the richter scale at the epicentre in Nepal. The Indian Meteorological Department has issued an alert for the entire region that has felt the tremors in India including the national capital region, stating people to stay away from concrete structures once aftershocks begin, given an earthquake of this magnitude has the power of damaging even the strongest of buildings. 
 
What is a big cause of concern however is the level of preparedness that one can expect in the national capital region, given it falls in Earthquake Zone 4, or the second most dangerous geographical zone for earthquakes in India, followed only by the entire Himalayan belt, which is the most earthquake prone area in India (Zone 5).

The casualty, officials both in <keyword id="2823538" type="COUNTRY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Nepal-and-India">Nepal and India</keyword> fear, could go much higher given the scale of devastation followed by the massive <keyword id="6362774" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="earthquake">earthquake</keyword> and its hugely powerful aftershocks. 
 
Some extremely moving first pictures and videos amongst other details of the extent of damage have also started filtering in. Several pictures have surfaced showing huge cracks on roads in Kathmandu, several destroyed buildings, including a completely raised to the ground chapel. Reports also suggest that the Kathmandu airport has been shutdown and all flights are now being directed to India. Fear is now mounting that there could be several people stuck or buried under collapsed high-rises and other buildings in Kathmandu alone. 
 
An earthquake measuring 7.9 magnitude struck 80 km (50 miles) east of Pokhara in Nepal on Saturday, about half way between the town and the capital Kathmandu.
