Strongly backing Tamil Nadu's decades old two-language policy, the ruling AIADMK in the state on Monday rejected the Centre's three-language formula proposed in the new <keyword id="361871" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="National-Education-Policy">National Education Policy</keyword> (NEP) 2020 and said there will be no deviation from the existing system. "The three-language formula in the NEP is painful and saddening. The Prime Minister (<keyword id="6354477" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Narendra-Modi">Narendra Modi</keyword>) should reconsider the three-language policy," Palaniswami said. Taking strong exception to the proposal, he said in a statement the state has been following the two-language policy for several decades and that there will be no change in it. His assertion came amidst opposition demand, including from DMK, that the government should reject the three-language formula proposed in NEP and stick to its two-language policy. Incidentally, ahead of today's meeting he convened to discuss the matter with his senior cabinet colleagues, the Opposition bloc led by DMK wrote to the chief minister, asking him to adopt a Cabinet resolution against the new NEP. "Tamil Nadu will never allow the Centre's three- language formula. The state will continue with its dual language policy (of Tamil and English)," Palaniswami said. He discussed the matter with his colleagues--Deputy CM O Panneerselvam, Ministers for higher education and school education, K P Anbalagan and K A Sengottaiyan, respectively and others. The Centre should allow the states to implement their own policy on the subject, he said, adding there will be no change to the two-language formula which the state had adopted decades ago. Teaching up to class 5 in mother tongue or regional language and lowering the stakes of board exams are part of the sweeping reforms in the new NEP unveiled last week by the Centre. However, the proposals have found resistance from the DMK-led opposition in the state, with the Leader of Opposition in the Assembly, MK Stalin, dubbing it as an attempt to "impose" Hindi and Sankrit. The anti-Hindi movement of the 1960s taken forward by the DMK had struck an instant chord among the Tamil masses then and is believed to be one of the key reasons for the Dravidian party storming to power in the 1967 elections under the late CN Annadurai, unseating a Congress government in the state for the first time in post-independent India. Palaniswami further said the state has been maintaining a consistent stand and that for about 80 years, the people of Tamil Nadu had been firm on two language policy. Late chief ministers Annadurai, MG Ramachandran and J Jayalalithaa were firmly against 'imposition' of Hindi. He also recalled the historic resolution brought in the Tamil Nadu Assembly by late Annadurai on January 23, 1968, which proposed to abolish the three language policy in all schools in the state, removing Hindi from the State syllabus but allowing only Tamil and English. Later, the AIADMK government led M G Ramachandran had in 1986 adopted an Assembly resolution asserting the two language policy. Former chief minister J Jayalalithaa too was firm on opposing Hindi on non-Hindi speaking states and in thwarting such efforts and wanted Tamil to be declared as an official language of the country, he said. Palaniswami pointed out he himself had written to the Prime Minister in June 2019 stressing on two-language policy. Besides, he had reiterated this in his Independence Day address last year and on various occasions during the debates in the state Assembly, he recalled. Meanwhile, the Opposition DMK led alliance in Tamil Nadu--comprising the Congress, MDMK, VCK, CPM, CPI and MMK, collectively wrote a letter to Palaniswami asking him to pass a resolution against the new NEP in the Tamil Nadu Cabinet meeting. Many clauses in the new policy are trying to impose "Hindi" and "Sanskrit" and are "trying to do away with Tamil from the system, and this is against federalism, women rights and social justice. It was also "imposing" vedic culture, besides being mum on reservation, it said. "The NEP should be opposed in the initial stages itself," the letter added. Later, Stalin, in a Facebook post, thanked Palaniswami for the government stand on the matter. The NEP, passed by the Union Cabinet last week, laid emphasis on the mother tongue/local and regional language which will now be the medium of instruction at least till Class 5, but preferably till Class 8 and beyond. Also, Sanskrit will be offered at all levels of school and higher education as an option for students, including in the three-language formula.

The <keyword id="19896558" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Tamil-Nadu" source="keywords">Tamil Nadu</keyword> Generation and Distribution Corporation Limited (<keyword id="20053164" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="TANGEDCO" source="keywords">TANGEDCO</keyword>) said that it has been compelled to increase the <keyword id="20703938" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="electricity-tariff" source="keywords">electricity tariff</keyword> to cover increasing <keyword id="20041852" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="financial-loss" source="keywords">financial loss</keyword>. The state <keyword id="21209946" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="power-distribution-company" source="keywords">power distribution company</keyword> said that the total financial loss of the Tamil Nadu Power Generation and Distribution Corporation, which was Rs 18.954 crore in 2011-12, increased to Rs 94,312 crore in the last 10 years, TANGEDCO said in a press release. The release said that Tamil Nadu Power Generation and Distribution Corporation has been forced to take loans from financial institutions and banks due to non-commitment in the past, like the current Tamil Nadu government's commitment of 100 per cent government absorption from 2021-22. As a result, the loan amount of Rs 43,493 crore to Tamil Nadu Power Generation and Distribution Corporation and Power Network Corporation in 2011-12 has increased three times in the last 10 years to Rs 1,59,823 crore till (2021-22). As a result, net interest on loans increased by 259 per cent from Rs 4,588 crore in 2011-12 to Rs 16,511 crore in 2020-21, the release said. The press release said that considering the burden that may be caused to the electricity consumers due to the increase in electricity tariffs, the government has been implementing small electricity tariff hikes every year so that the consumers do not have a major impact. According to the guidelines of the Union Ministry of Power, annual electricity tariff revision is a pre-condition for availing Union Government funds under the Strengthening of Distribution System (RDSS) scheme. As per the multi-year electricity tariff order of the Tamil Nadu Electricity Regulatory Commission, from 01.07.2023 on the basis of consumer price index number, against the increase of 4.7 per cent for all electricity connections, only 2.18 per cent has been raised considering the welfare of consumerss, the release said. It is worth noting that this 2.18 per cent increase for houses is entirely covered by the government's electricity subsidy. As per the rules of the Tamil Nadu Electricity Regulatory Commission, the electricity tariff was hiked only by 2.18 per cent last year even though there was a possibility to increase the electricity tariff by up to 5 per cent, the release said. Tamil Nadu power distribution company increases electricity tariff to cover financial loss

A total of 156 people are undergoing treatment at various Government hospitals in the state after consuming illicit liquor. A total of 110 people are undergoing treatment at the Kallakurichi Government Medical College hospital. Twelve people are admitted at Puducherry 20 people are undergoing treatment at Salem and four in Viluppuram government hospitals. A total of seven people, including five men and two women, who were undergoing treatment at hospitals in Tamil Nadu after consuming illicit liquor have been discharged, according to the Kallakurichi District Magistrate. So far, 32 people have died at the Government Kallakurichi Medical College and Hospital, and 18 at the Government Mohan Kumaramangalam Medical College and Hospital in Salem. Four people have died at the Government Villupuram Medical College and Hospital and three at the Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research (Jipmer) in Puducherry. Earlier on Friday, Tamil Nadu <keyword id="21728762" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="CM-MK-Stalin" source="keywords">CM MK Stalin</keyword> said the state government will take care of the entire education and hostel expenses of children who have lost either one or both of their parents in the Kallakuruchi hooch tragedy. The government will provide Rs 5,000 in monthly assistance until the age of 18 for children who have lost both their parents and Rs 5 lakh will be deposited immediately as a fixed deposit in the names of children who have lost both parents, Stalin said. After the minors turn 18, the amount can be withdrawn with interest, the chief minister said. Similarly, Rs 3 lakh will be deposited as a fixed deposit for children who have lost one parent. Priority will be given to them in all government welfare schemes, the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister said.

Kallakurichi hooch deaths: Tamil Nadu BJP delegation meets Governor Ravi

Chennai, Jan 23 () India's largest realty firm DLF on Thursday announced an investment of Rs 5,000 crore to develop large commercial project here as part of its strategy to expand portfolio of rent yielding properties.
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Thiru Edappadi Palaniswami laid the foundation stone of 'DLF Downtown' at Taramani in Chennai.
The 27 acre project will be developed by DLF's joint venture firm with GIC named DLF Cyber City Developers Ltd (DCCDL). The total commercial area, largely office spaces to be constructed under the new project, is 6.8 million sq ft in various phases.
"Tamil Nadu has always been a destination of choice for corporates and MNCs due to its talent pool and favourable business environment. We are investing Rs 5,000 crore in phases for developing our fourth project DLF Downtown, Taramani in Chennai," DLF CEO Mohit Gujral said.
DLF would commence construction of 2.5 million sq ft area in the first phase.
The project, to be completed in the next 5-6 years, would help additional 70,000 direct and 6,000 ancillary employment opportunities once operational.
"Chennai continues to strengthen its position as an IT/ITeS hub with increasing investment commitment from global companies, making it out second largest market after Gurugram," DLF MD (Rental Business) Sriram Khattar said.
With this project, he said, the company would now have a 14 million sq ft of development in Chennai.
"The company has identified a development pipeline of 20 million sq ft and a construction of 5.5 million sq ft is underway. This will augment our existing 35 million sq ft rental portfolio of office and retail properties," Khattar said.
The company plans to take the national commercial portfolio to over 50 million sq ft, he added.
DLF earns an annual rental income of over Rs 3,000 crore from its commercial properties that are located in Gurugram, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata and Chandigarh.
Another 20 million sq ft commercial space is under development.
Unlike residential property market, commercial real estate, especially office market, is performing well. Office space leasing touched an all time high in 2019.
To monetise its commercial assets, DLF in December 2017 entered into a joint venture with Singapore sovereign fund GIC when DLF promoters sold their entire 40 per cent stake in DLF Cyber City Developers Ltd (DCCDL) for nearly Rs 12,000 crore.
This deal included sale of 33.34 per cent stake in the DCCDL to GIC for about Rs 9,000 crore and buyback of remaining shares worth about Rs 3,000 crore by DCCDL.
In DCCDL, DLF currently holds nearly 67 per cent stake, while GIC has the remaining stake.
DLF has so far developed 153 real estate projects comprising 331 million sq ft. It has a land bank of 192 million sq ft. MJH BAL
