<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/544e4814eab8ea006e9e8ca8-1200-924/brazil-soccer-fan-sad-red-eye.png" border="0" alt="brazil soccer fan sad red eye"><p class="source"><span>Reuters</span></p></img></div><p></p></div></div>Hours after <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/report-fifa-officials-arrested-on-corruption-charges-will-be-extradited-to-the-us-2015-5">nine current and former FIFA officials were arrested on bribery and corruption charges</a>, the international soccer association announced that it would continue with its scheduled events as planned.</p><p>The FIFA presidential election scheduled to take place two days later <a href="http://www.bbc.com/sport/0/football/32895057">would go ahead</a>, despite <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/europes-soccer-chiefs-want-to-postpone-the-fifa-presidential-election-after-massive-bribery-allegations-2015-5">calls to postpone it</a> from Europe's football governing body. The 2018 World Cup in Russia and 2022 World Cup in Qatar were also <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/world-cup-2018-in-russia-and-qatar-2022-will-still-go-ahead-2015-5">not in jeopardy</a>.</p><p>In a statement that morning, FIFA welcomed the investigation, calling itself <a href="http://fifa.pressfire.net/newsletter/newsletter?id=3001&amp;html=1">"the injured party"</a> in all of this. In a press conference, a spokesman said it was a <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/fifa-on-arrests-this-is-a-good-day-for-fifa-2015-5">"good day"</a> for FIFA. In <a href="http://www.fifa.com/about-fifa/news/y=2015/m=5/news=statement-by-fifa-president-blatter-2609360.html">his own remarks</a>, president Sepp Blatter vowed that corrupt individuals would be "put out of the game" until the organization was "free from wrongdoing."</p><p>On Friday, 48 hours after high-ranking FIFA officials were <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2015/05/28/sports/soccer/in-a-five-star-setting-fifa-officials-are-arrested-the-swiss-way.html?_r=0">woken up and escorted by police from the five-star Baur au Lac hotel in Zurich</a>, Blatter was <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/sepp-blatter-wins-fifa-president-election-2015-5">reelected to a fifth term in a landslide</a>. In the aftermath of the most jarring scandal in the recent history of the organization, it's very close to business as usual at FIFA, and there are some simple reasons why.</p><h3>The corruption charges didn't cover all of FIFA.</h3><p>When the initial elation that FIFA finally got hammered wore off, we saw that <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/fifa-bribery-scandal-concacaf-conmebol-2015-5">the scope of the Department of Justice's investigation was actually relatively limited</a>.</p><p>The <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/fifa-bribery-allegations-details-2015-5">DOJ's indictment alleged</a> that high-ranking FIFA officials took $150 million in bribes over two decades in exchange for media and marketing rights for competitions staged by Concacaf (the governing body of North American soccer) and CONMEBOL (that of South American soccer), in addition to two other allegations related to 2010 World Cup bidding and the 2011 FIFA presidential election.</p><p>We're talking about corruption related to things like the Copa America, Concacaf Gold Cup, and Copa Libertadores - not vastly more lucrative soccer properties like the World Cup, Euros, or UEFA Champions League. It is widely believed that the indictment focused solely on the Americas because Chuck Blazer - <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/chuck-blazer-reportedly-informed-fbi-in-fifa-investigation-2015-5">an eccentric disgraced ex-Concacaf executive who reportedly had a Manhattan apartment just for his cats</a> - worked as an FBI informant and gave investigators key access to the organization's inner workings. </p><p>On the one hand, this is staggering. If the allegations are true, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/fifa-bribery-allegations-details-2015-5"><em>every</em> major continental tournament in the Americas</a> going back more than a decade - even minor things like the Concacaf Champions League - spawned rampant bribery and corruption. And if this corruption was so rampant and consistent in the Americas, are we really expected to believe that things worked differently in Africa, Asia, Europe, and Oceania?</p><p>This could be the tip of the corruption iceberg.</p><p>But on the other hand, the fact that the indictment only dealt with competitions in the Americas gave FIFA and Blatter an out. While US attorney general Loretta Lynch called corruption in FIFA "rampant, systemic, and deep-rooted," FIFA has quarantined the scandal, putting it down to some bad actors conducting business over there in North and South America.</p><p>"The Swiss authorities, acting on behalf of their US counterparts, arrested the individuals for activities carried out in relation with Concacaf and CONMEBOL business," is how FIFA described the raid in a statement.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/5568ce39eab8eac10aa0e1b2-1200-800/fifa-sepp-blatter.jpg" border="0" alt="fifa sepp blatter"><p class="source"><span>Philipp Schmidii/Getty Images</span></p><p class="caption">Blatter after his win.</p></img></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>When you read between the lines in FIFA's rhetoric, you see what they're trying to communicate: It's not FIFA that's corrupt, it's individual actors within FIFA; don't change FIFA, change the bad actors.</p><p>"You can't just ask everybody to behave ethically just like that in the world in which we live," Blatter <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/sepp-blatter-fifa-corruption-scandal-2015-5">said in his opening remarks to the FIFA congress</a>.</p><p>"We cannot constantly supervise everybody that is in football," he added. "That is impossible."</p><h3>The coalition that backs Blatter is rock-solid.</h3><p>In his 15-minute speech before the election, <a href="http://www.nbcnews.com/storyline/fifa-corruption-scandal/fifa-president-sepp-blatter-reelected-amid-corruption-storm-zurich-n366616">he told voters</a>, "We don't need revolutions, but we always need evolutions."</p><p>Fewer and fewer people are buying this argument. The US put its hopes of hosting the 2026 World Cup at risk by <a href="http://www.espnfc.us/united-states/story/2470919/united-states-to-vote-against-sepp-blatter-in-fifa-election">publicly opposing Blatter in the election</a>. Most of the powerful European nations flipped on Blatter as well, with the most powerful man in European soccer <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/sepp-blatter-refused-to-resign-2015-5">asking Blatter to his face to resign</a>.</p><p>The DOJ's <a href="http://images.businessweek.com/bloomberg/pdfs/FIFAindictment.pdf">164-page indictment</a> depicts an organization where corruption is endemic across continents and generations. It's a systemic problem, Lynch said, not a individual one.</p><p>But the reality, as FIFA's response and Blatter's reelection shows, is that it'll take more than this to force FIFA to fix the systemic issues that the attorney general said led to $150 million in alleged bribes for some relatively second-tier competitions.</p><p>Blatter has been running FIFA his way for 17 years, and while he vowed to clear FIFA's good name in his triumphant presidential victory speech, he's still the guy who said "we don't need revolutions" just hours before.</p><p>Getting rid of Blatter isn't simple. While the western world can't believe he's still in power, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/african-soccer-president-blatter-blasphemy-2015-5">Blatter is still popular among smaller FIFA member states across Africa and Asia</a>. In FIFA elections, all 209 FIFA members get one vote. England, China, Barbados, Guinea-Bissau, Tajikistan, France, the United States - they all count the same.</p><p>Blatter has built a coalition of these small countries that makes him impossible to beat in an election, and he's done it largely with his developmental funding policies over the last two decades. </p><p>Money from FIFA's two developmental programs, Goal and the Football Assistance Program (FAP), is <a href="http://fivethirtyeight.com/features/how-fifas-structure-lends-itself-to-corruption/">distributed pretty much evenly regardless of a country's size or football history under Blatter</a>, Carl Bialak of FiveThirtyEight explained in a great post. Of the 209 member states, 90% got between $1.8 million and $2.1 million in FAP funding from 2010 to 2014. For small nations that don't have thriving domestic leagues or strong national soccer federations, this money is vital, and ousting Blatter over corruption concerns isn't worth the risk of electing a reform candidate who would alter that payment structure.</p><p>Jack Warner, one of the nine current and former FIFA executives who got indicted, actually had the simplest explanation for why Blatter wins so easily.</p><p>"You have to understand, FIFA has 250 members," he <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MSG5fi2XntM">told the BBC in an interview after his arrest</a>. "Out of those 250 members, 180 are third-world countries hungry for help [in the form of] FIFA grants. He did say this term would be he last, but he said that last time he won an election too. It also doesn't appear likely that <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/report-fifa-officials-arrested-on-corruption-charges-will-be-extradited-to-the-us-2015-5">the Swiss investigation of the 2018 and 2022 World Cup bidding process</a> will produce a smoking gun considering FIFA itself submitted the dossier to the relevant authorities that spawned the investigation in the first place.</p><p>The $150 million bribery scandal will have far-reaching implications for Concacaf and CONMEBOL, with next summer's Copa America Centenario in serious jeopardy and the president of Concacaf currently under arrest. But are things really going to change at FIFA? If Blatter's belief is that this scandal is about bad actors, and the solution is simply to remove those actors (<a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/fifa-corruption-scandal-should-cause-re-vote-for-2022-world-cup-2015-5">as FIFA has been doing for years</a>) what really changes?</p><p>If the initial hope when news of the arrests broke was that this would lead to a new FIFA - one where bribes aren't commonplace, and World Cups hosting duties are awarded fairly and sensibly - the ensuing days have shown how difficult that's really going to be, and how old systems endure.</p><p>"I will be in command of this boat called FIFA, and we will bring it back," <a href="https://twitter.com/BrianStraus/status/604338897833848832">Blatter said in his victory speech</a>. The sad reality of what the $150 million bribery scandal really means for FIFA

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/556c5b3cecad04fe43828fea-889-667/todaytix-founders-merritt-and-brian-2.jpg" border="0" alt="TodayTix founders Merritt &amp; Brian"><p class="source"><span>TodayTix</span></p></img></div><p></p></div></div>Walking past Times Square, it's almost impossible to miss the winding lines of people waiting to purchase Broadway tickets.</p><p>It's an odd sight to behold in the age of the internet and smartphones, and it speaks volumes about how trapped in time much of the theater industry is.</p><p>Two former Broadway producers, Brian Fenty and Merritt Baer, took notice of the theater industry's overall lack of innovation when it came to ticketing.</p><p>Both men had a background in finance in addition to their work producing, so they decided to combine the two and create <a href="http://www.todaytix.com/us/nyc">TodayTix</a>, an app that lets you purchase theater tickets at the absolute lowest cost.</p><p>"We thought about how we wanted to sell tickets and the most cost effective way to sell tickets, and then as theater lovers, how would we want to buy tickets - what's the easiest way to see a show?" Baer told Business Insider. "The industry generally made it harder to buy tickets. Our philosophy was the exact opposite: make it as easy as possible to get tickets into the hands of consumers, and in doing so, broaden the scope, availability, and access to theater events."</p><p>Of course, competition already exists in the mobile ticketing space from big players like Ticket Master and StubHub, but mobile tickets still don't exist within the theater industry itself due to union restrictions. So regardless of how you purchase a theater ticket, you'll need to pick up or print out that ticket beforehand, which is the key area TodayTix wants to differentiate itself by creating a VIP-like experience where your tickets are already waiting for you at the theater in the hand of a smiling concierge.</p><p>With TodayTix, that means offering a service that's lucrative to both theater fans and Broadway producers, with the goal of disproving the idea that a night at the theater is always an unaffordable luxury.</p><p>"<span id="docs-internal-guid-4a83f82a-af48-74ff-0021-1c836c125346">Most people think, and we've done focus groups, most people assume that Broadway tickets are $100 to $150," Baer said. The app offers tickets for all Broadway shows, and a selection of the most popular off-Broadway shows. Tickets are only available seven days in advance, and there's also a Mobile Lottery feature that lets people enter a random drawing to purchase tickets for extremely popular shows.</p><p>"<span id="docs-internal-guid-4a83f82a-af51-493e-9982-86e618050fb1">Our app is 30 seconds or less to buy a ticket, and it's something we really stuck to," Brian Fenty told Business Insider.</span></p><p>Once you order your tickets, you don't have to do anything but show up at the theater a few minutes before the show starts. When you get there, just look for the concierge wearing a red TodayTix shirt, and you'll be handed your tickets. And since the TodayTix concierge team is made up of aspiring actors, you'll also have someone to answer any questions you have if it's your first time.</p><p>"We're trying to make the delivery a high end experience as well," Fenty said. "We like to say it's a high-touch end to a high-tech process."</p><p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;"><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/556c6467ecad045672828fed-1200-750/ip6-side-splash.png" border="0" alt="TodayTix app"><p class="source"><span>TodayTix</span></p></img></div><p></p></div></div><br /></span></p><p>Fenty and Baer understand the business side of Broadway from the larger context of having grown up acting.</p><p>"<span id="docs-internal-guid-4a83f82a-af5c-e7d7-32ce-189427159257">Merritt and I met 18 years ago at theater camp," Fenty told Business Insider. </span></p><p><span id="docs-internal-guid-4a83f82a-af5c-e7d7-32ce-189427159257">"We met at Frenchwood's Festival for the Performing Arts </span>-<span id="docs-internal-guid-4a83f82a-af5d-87d6-3780-988195dcb24e">singing and dancing 12 year olds, very embarrassing, no videos exist-" Baer quickly interjected, laughing.</span></p><p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;"><span><span><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/556c68d96da811ed1eecba19-1200-1200/brian m fenty headshot.jpg" border="0" alt="Brian Fenty TodayTix founder"><p class="source"><span>TodayTix</span></p></img></div><p></p></div></div></span></span></span></p><p>"A<span id="docs-internal-guid-4a83f82a-af5d-ffb9-aa70-18d7dda546e3">ctually videos do exist, and I have one on DVD," Fenty said. <span id="docs-internal-guid-4a83f82a-af5e-a115-2ee9-0b96e60b5c77">"<span id="docs-internal-guid-4a83f82a-af5e-e6a7-0cb8-ca30b0041f5c">But what's interesting is that camp has yielded some of the industry's biggest producers, biggest stars, biggest songwriters, so it's really this amazing melting pot."</span></span></span></p><p>The two drifted apart after camp and eventually went to college, with Fenty attending The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and Baer attending Stanford University. Both Fenty and Baer entered into the world of finance, but their love of theater eventually prompted them to begin looking at Broadway from an investment standpoint, even after they each began their respective careers in private equity and investment banking.</p><p>In 2010, Baer produced <span id="docs-internal-guid-4a83f82a-af62-787a-76f2-491ef1bf9da7">The Merchant of Venice starring Al Pacino, and then went on to produce Death of a Salesman in 2012, for which he won a Tony Award. Fenty was also producing Broadway shows at 23, and the two eventually re-connected while Baer was working in London.</span></p><p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;"><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/556c694369bedde16bcba7ad-500-697/merritt baer headshot.jpg" border="0" alt="Merritt Baer TodayTix founder"><p class="source"><span>TodayTix</span></p></img></div><p></p></div></div></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span>"It was around that same time period that Brian and I reconnected and said 'Hey how do we take my background in ticketing and both our backgrounds in producing and Brian's entrepreneurship, how do we apply that to the theater industry?" Baer said. "And all this with a background of the theater industry in 2013 where in, according to The Broadway League, .08% of Broadway tickets were sold over mobile."</p><p>The two set out to change this, and they have.</p><p>"We launched in December 2013, and we currently are selling roughly 3 percent of all the tickets on Broadway," Fenty said.</p><p>With their knowledge of the industry, the two have also forged a partnership with The Public Theater in New York, an off-Broadway theater that now exclusively offers the first public showing of their plays through TodayTix, which offers a free lottery for the first preview shows.</p><p>It's been a successful partnership. When free tickets for the first preview of Julie Taymor's one-woman show "Grounded" starring Anne Hathaway were offered on the app, over 15,000 people entered for the chance to win tickets.</p><p>A year and a half after launching, TodayTix <a href="https://www.crunchbase.com/organization/todaytix">has raised $6.7 million in two rounds of funding</a>, and on Monday they announced they were expanding their market to London - a market where TodayTix can introduce e-tickets for the first time since there's no restrictions like in the US.</p><p dir="ltr">And the business is clearly growing - In the first third of this year alone, Baer says the company's downloads have increased by 53% over the entire history of the company. Repeat customers are responsible for 55% of TodayTix's transactions, too. </p><p dir="ltr">But it doesn't come easily. Fenty says it takes time to build the necessary relationships, and having 20 years of experience in the theater industry helps them succeed where others have failed. </p><p dir="ltr">"We spent most of our lives in this world, so we really know the inner workings, and there are other companies that have dipped their toes into the Broadway waters, and have been quickly discouraged and left the market," he said. "It's also about having a customer base that's growing and trusts you. The company is growing rapidly and is now sold everywhere from mom-and-pop shops to nationwide retailers like Nordstrom and Target to Starbucks stores around the world.</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Last year, S'well - the brainchild of CEO Sarah Kauss (No. 49 on the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/bi-100-the-creators-business-visionaries-creating-value-for-the-world-2016-6">BI 100: The Creators</a>) - pulled in $50 million in sales, a mark that the company hopes to double this year.</span></p><p><span>But S'well might never have happened at all save for some timely encouragement and wisdom Kauss received from her mother.</span></p><p>Six years ago, Kauss was enjoying a much-needed vacation in Arizona with her mother. At the time, the then 35-year-old Harvard Business School graduate was working "a million hours" in a demanding but successful career in commercial real estate development. Her mother, who was celebrating five years free of cancer, began reflecting on life.</p><p>"We had this deep conversation about 'What would you do if you could do anything?' - she almost felt like she had an extra life," Kauss said. </p><p>Her mom decided to become a painter. Kauss, a University of Colorado at Boulder alum with an environmentalist spirit, told her mother about an idea to create a reusable water bottle that didn't look like bulky camping gear. Her mother pushed her to take plunge.</p><p>"I just thought the world needed a more fashionable water bottle," said Kauss, who envisioned something both beautiful and useful that could sell in the store at the Museum of Modern Art (today, the bottles are <a href="http://bit.ly/28TfOCJ">in fact sold there</a>).</p><blockquote class="pullquote float_right">"I just thought the world needed a more fashionable water bottle." </blockquote><p><span><span>But beyond design, Kauss thought her idea could make a significant impact on the environment, an issue she cared deeply about. </span></span><span><span>With the right blend of fashion and function, she thought, S'well could create a water bottle that's so enjoyable to use that people will stop drinking from plastic bottles - <a href="http://www.swellbottle.com/about-swell-bottle-mission-and-charity/">50 billion of which clog landfills</a> in the US each year. </span></span><span> </span></p><p><span>So Kauss returned home to New York and invested $30,000 in savings to start S'well right out of her NYC apartment. </span></p><p>She spent the next six months working to get a prototype of the bottle, find a factory, and launch a website.</p><p>"I didn't know how big the market was [for water bottles], I thought I was building a product for me and maybe a small group of people like me," Kauss said. </p><h3>The Oprah effect</h3><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The combination of style and <a href="http://www.swellbottle.com/swell-experience-features-insulated-ecofriendly-customizable-waterbottle/">functionality</a> - made of non-leaching and non-toxic stainless steel, the bottle keeps liquids cold for 24 hours and hot for 12 hours -  struck a nerve with customers. A few months after launching S'well, early bulk orders came in from Facebook and Harvard, and Kauss landed in Crate and Barrel for the holiday season. </span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">"Those first orders were great because it gave me a confidence that people were going to buy [the product]," she said. </span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Then Kauss got a call from a senior editor of <a href="http://www.oprah.com/app/o-magazine.html">O, The Oprah Magazine</a> after sending her a sample bottle. The editor took the bottle on vacation and loved it. She wanted to feature it in the magazine, but had one request: Send every color you have. But the bottles only came in blue, so Kauss scrambled to create a new palate of colors and send them off to the manufacturer.</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;"><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_left"><div><div class="image on-image"><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/5755bc7491058424008c6f4d-2400/swell-5944.jpg" alt="swell 5944" data-mce-source="Sarah Jacobs" /><p class="source"><span>Sarah Jacobs</span></p><p class="caption">S'well bottles come in more than 200 colors and designs.</p></div><p></p></div></div></span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">"It was sort of the moment that I said 'OK this isn't a project, we're a company,'" Kauss recalled.</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">About four months later, Kauss' array of colored bottles made it into the magazine's </span><a href="http://us2.campaign-archive1.com/?u=4db63104bd673c10c7872cee3&amp;id=3b36eb3d80&amp;e=175ab5408f"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Must Have Things for Summer 2011</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> list. "What was surprising is how long those magazines live for - we have a 'How did you hear about us?' on the website and months and months later people would be saying they saw it in Oprah," Kauss said.</span></p><h3>Partnering with Starbucks</h3><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">On the heels of the Oprah feature, which caused sales to surge in the 600 small <keyword id="6354851" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="Retail">retail</keyword> stores the bottles were sold in at the time, Kauss scored a trial period with Starbucks in 2012 to sell bottles in 140 stores in Atlanta and Austin. The bottles sold out, cementing the partnership with Starbucks, which would become S'well's most lucrative and lasting partner.</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The following year, S'well created a hyperlocal collection with Starbucks for its stores in New York City, Seattle, and Hawaii. The bottles were a hit, but it wasn't until Kauss had the chance opportunity to meet Starbucks CEO Howard Schultz (No. 2 on the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/bi-100-the-creators-business-visionaries-creating-value-for-the-world-2016-6">BI 100: The Creators</a>) </span><span style="font-weight: 400;">that sales really ramped up. </span></p><p>Kauss spotted Schultz standing alone at the grand opening of a Starbucks coffee bar in Seattle, so she grabbed a S'well bottle and introduced herself. Schultz reveled in the story of S'well and wondered why the bottles weren't in more stores, Kauss said.<span> </span>He invited her to meet with him and his senior leadership team the next day to discuss expansion.</p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The impact of that meeting was profound: S'well found itself integrated at Starbucks stores around the world - 10,000 locations in North America, as well as Brazil and throughout Asia.</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">"Starbucks is a beast. They're amazing. They're huge and they're everywhere," Kauss said.</span></p><p>More than just sheer scope, Starbucks also shared a commitment to higher ideals, including stringent fair trade and sustainability standards. In fact, it took S'well's factory nearly two years to meet Starbucks' standards.</p><p>"They do so much work to make sure everything is good for the environment and good for the workers and it makes me feel better when I go there as a customer because I know how much work they do," Kauss said. </p><h3>Rapid expansion</h3><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Buyers are smitten with S'well. In 2015, after rolling out in thousands of Starbucks stores, S'well reached $50 million in sales, a gigantic leap from $10 million the previous year.</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The company is continuing its rapid expansion in 2016. This summer, S'well will launch at Starbucks in another 37 countries in Europe, the Middle East, Russia, and South Africa. <span style="font-weight: 400;">S'well also debuted an exclusive line at Target stores this spring called </span><a href="http://www.target.com/c/sip-by-swell-home-and-storage-org-featured-brands/-/N-4tg40"><span style="font-weight: 400;">S'ip by S'well</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">, a smaller bottle size at a lower price point ($25), which will roll out nationwide by the holiday season.</span></span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Kauss says this year S'well sales could as much as double to $100 million. </span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">"It's exciting. It's sort of unbelievable. You're standing at the ocean and you just don't know how big it is," Kauss said.<div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/5755caa452bcd01f7b8c6ee5-2400/swell-5994.jpg" alt="swell 5994" data-mce-source="Sarah Jacobs" /><p class="source"><span>Sarah Jacobs</span></p><p class="caption">S'well's NYC headquarters.</p></div><p></p></div></div></span></p><p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;"><span>Part of the reason the company grew so much last year is its focus on being "on trend," a commitment that's grounded in Kauss' vision to become "the bottle of fashion week." </span>The company now has more than <a href="http://www.swellbottle.com/swell-bottle-lookbook/">200 designs and colors</a> - which range in price from $25 for a 9-ounce bottle to $45 for a 25-ounce bottle - and appears at the buzziest events including SXSW, New York fashion week, and TED conferences. S'well also has brand partnerships with celebrities, Kauss said, a marketing tactic that undoubtedly boosts brand recognition, especially on social media. </span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">But ultimately, S'well's success comes down to customer loyalty. On average, customers have 5.5 bottles at home, according to Kauss.</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">"Our customers have this great appetite, but I thought eventually we'd run out of customers because everybody will have one that's in the market. ... but what's surprising is that we keep coming out with new lines - spring, summer, fall, holiday - just like a fashion brand," Kauss said.</span></p><p>Many customers also appreciate S'well's social mission. A portion of profits from every bottle sold go to the <a href="https://tap.unicefusa.org/?_ga=1.195639468.1491691588.1464984107">US fund for UNICEF</a> - $200,000 since 2015 - to help provide clean water to children, and for every <a href="http://www.swellbottle.com/product/best-insulated-water-bottle-wood-collection-bottle-teakwood/">wood-surfaced bottle</a> sold a tree is planted through American Forests. But while the charitable aspect is an integral part of the business, Kauss doesn't think it's a make or break for buyers.</p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">"We don't even talk about it that much with our customers, but it's just the right thing to do," Kauss said. "It's part of our DNA, it's part of our mission statement and part of everything that we do. I think customers are really smart and it has to come from an authentic place."</span></p>

From the outside the five-storey house in London's posh Notting Hill district looks like any other. Inside, though, it is full of new technologies that aim to make it a net exporter of power. They exemplify many of the shifts now under way that are making energy cleaner, more plentiful, cheaper to store, easier to distribute and capable of being used more intelligently. The house in Notting Hill is a one-off, paid for by its green multimillionaire owner. But the benefits of recent innovations can be reaped by everybody.</span></p>
<p>That makes a welcome change from the two issues that have dominated the debate about energy in the past few decades: scarcity and concerns about the environment. Modern life is based on the ubiquitous use of fossil fuels, all of which have big disadvantages. Coal, the cheapest and most abundant, has been the dirtiest, contributing to rising emissions. Oil supplies have been vulnerable to geopolitical shocks and price collusion by producers. Natural gas has mostly come by pipeline--and often with serious political baggage, as in the case of Europe's dependence on Russia. Nuclear power is beset by political troubles, heightened by public alarm after the accident at Japan's Fukushima power station in 2011. Renewables such as wind and solar--beneficiaries of lavish subsidies--have so far played a marginal role. The main worries were whether enough energy would be available for power generation, transport, heating, cooling and industry; and if so, whether it would cook the planet.</p>
<p>Now new factors are in play. Technological change has broken the power of the Organisation of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) to keep the oil price high. Hydraulic fracturing ("fracking") and horizontal drilling have turned America into a big oil producer, with 4m barrels a day coming from sources which used to be deemed "unconventional". The boom in producing oil and gas from shale has yet to spread to other countries. America enjoys some big advantages, such as open spaces, accommodating laws, a well-developed supply chain and abundant finance for risky projects. So far it has refrained from exporting its crude oil or natural gas, but exports of liquefied natural gas (LNG) will start this year. Increased trade in LNG will create a more global gas market and greater resilience of supply, undermining Russia's pipeline monopoly in Europe. America is already exporting lightly refined oil.</p>
<p>An increase in supply, a surprising resilience in production in troubled places such as Iraq and Libya, and the determination of Saudi Arabia and its Gulf allies not to sacrifice market share in the face of falling demand have led to a spectacular plunge in the oil price, which has fallen by half from its 2014 high. This has dealt a final blow to the notion of "peak oil". There is no shortage of hydrocarbons in the Earth's crust, and no sign that mankind is about to reach "peak technology" for extracting them. But the fall has created turmoil in financial markets as energy companies lay off workers and cut or delay investment projects.</p>
<p>The implications are more complicated than the headlines suggest. For a start, low prices do not instantly cause supply curbs or make investment dry up. Even costly projects do not stop pumping when the oil price falls. Fracking is a small-scale business. New projects can be halted quickly and restarted when the price picks up. American frackers are now the world's swing producers, reacting to price fluctuations in a way that was once the prerogative of the Saudis. On a 15- to 25-year time horizon, today's slide in the oil price needs to be set against the likely long-term trend. Futures markets are betting that the oil price will be back to $90 per barrel in the early 2020s.</p>
<p>For now, though, low oil prices put money in consumers' pockets and give a bit of breathing space to governments, making it easier to cut fossil-fuel subsidies (and perhaps even tax carbon emissions). In 2013 some $550 billion was spent on subsidising fossil fuels, a policy of extraordinary wrongheadedness that favours the rich, distorts economies and aggravates pollution.</p>
<p>A bigger question on many minds is the effect of rock-bottom oil prices on the shift towards low-carbon energy. Solar, wind and other renewables have recently benefited from unprecedented investments: an average of $260 billion a year worldwide over the past five years. Long, and wrongly, decried as mere boondoggles, they have begun to show real commercial promise in places as diverse as India, Hawaii, and parts of Africa where the climate is favourable, costs are low and other sources of power are expensive. Renewables capacity is rising even as subsidies are falling. China, for example, has already installed nearly half the 200 gigawatts (GW) of wind power it had been planning for 2020, so it is sharply cutting back the subsidies it introduced in 2009.</p>
<p>But the relationship is not always straightforward. Renewable electricity mainly competes with gas- and coal-fired power stations, not with oil. In North America, low oil prices may, paradoxically, lead to higher natural gas prices. Less fracking means there will be less of the associated gas that is produced along with shale oil. More broadly, much of the support for renewables has been political, and there is little sign that this is changing. Worries about climate change continue to ensure that clean energy enjoys strong political support in many developed countries. Whereas shares in oil companies have in recent months fallen along with the price, the S&amp;P Global Clean Energy Index, which covers the industry's 30 biggest listed companies, has barely budged.</p>
<p>The economics--and particularly the whopping subsidies of the past decade paid out in countries such as Germany and Britain--remain contested. Solar and wind are intermittent, so they are truly useful only if the power they produce can be stored; otherwise they need back-up capacity, typically from fossil-fuel sources. Dieter Helm, an energy expert at Oxford University, says that subsidies for primitive green technology, such as the current generation of solar panels, have been a "colossal mistake". It would have been much better, he argues, to invest in proven technologies such as electrical interconnectors (linking Britain and Norway, for example) and support research into new kinds of solar power, such as films that can be applied to any outside surface and technologies that use a wider chunk of the spectrum.</p>
<p>Bits of the green-energy world are wilting under the impact of low oil prices. Some biofuels have become less attractive. The same is true for electric cars, which currently make up less than 1% of America's light-vehicle fleet. Bloomberg New Energy Finance reckons that with petrol at $3.34 a gallon ($0.87 per litre), that share could rise to 9% by 2020. With petrol at $2.09, it would go up to just 6%. At the same time countries and companies thinking of switching from oil-fired power generation to renewables may reconsider. Saudi Arabia, for example, was planning to invest $110 billion in 41 GW of solar capacity by 2032, but may now want to think again.</p>

<h3>Take The Long View</h3>
<p>Yet the long-term trend is clear. In particular solar electricity, and ways of storing it, are getting ever cheaper and better, as this special report will show. Sanford C. Bernstein, a research firm, sees "global energy deflation" ahead. Most of the investment decisions in the fossil-fuel industry are taken a decade or two ahead. The International Energy Agency (IEA), an intergovernmental organisation often criticised for its focus on fossil fuels, says the world will need to stump up about $23 trillion over the next 20 years to finance continued fossil-fuel extraction, but the prospect of much cheaper solar power and storage capabiliy may put investors off. The story may be not so much what falling oil prices mean for clean energy than what the prospect of clean energy will mean for the oil price.</p>
<p>Old energy industries are changing too. Gas will become more abundant and easier to trade. Even coal, the most widely used and so far most polluting fossil fuel, is not inherently dirty. It does not need to be burned but can be cooked instead to produce methane, which can then be used as a fuel or in petrochemicals. Modern coal-fired plants, though pricey, are far cleaner than the belching monsters of the past. The heat they produce is used, not wasted as in many traditional power plants. The emissions are scrubbed of the oxides (of nitrogen and sulphur) that eat away at bodies and buildings. In some projects--albeit for now on a tiny scale--the CO{-2} is also captured for storage or use. Such improvements could make coal as relatively clean as other fossil fuels, though they make commercial sense only if the rules are tilted in their favour. But if the price of such techniques comes down and the cost of pollution goes up, clean coal could be competitive.</p>
<p>Nuclear power, in theory, is a source of cheap, dependable, constant electricity. In practice it is too costly for private investors to back without government guarantees, and its perceived danger makes it unpopular in some European countries and in Japan. One of several flaws in Germany's Energiewende--supposedly a big shift to green technology--was the hurried abandonment of the country's nuclear capacity. Besides, many of the world's existing nuclear power stations will have to close in the coming two decades. Barring a political shift or a technological breakthrough--perhaps in small, mass-produced nuclear plants--it is hard to see the fortunes of nuclear energy reviving.</p>
<p>Demand for energy is likely to hold up for some time yet, mainly thanks to rapid economic growth in emerging economies. The IEA predicts that over the next 25 years it will rise by 37%. Yet increasing efficiency in energy use and changes in behaviour have meant that the hitherto well-established link between economic growth and energy use is weakening.</p>

<h3>More For Less</h3>
<p>America's economy, for example, has grown by around 9% since 2007, whereas demand for finished petroleum products has dropped by nearly 11%. In Germany household consumption of electricity is now lower than it was in 1990. Global demand used to rise by 2% a year, but the rate is slowing. Even emissions in China, the world's largest and dirtiest energy consumer, may peak by 2030, thanks to huge investments in new clean-coal power generation, nuclear and renewable energy and long-distance transmission lines. Simon Daniel, an energy expert, sees two conflicting trends: on one hand greater efficiency, local production and storage, on the other increased consumption from the billions of new devices that will be hooked up to the "internet of things".</p>
<p>On current form the emissions from oil, gas and coal would, on most models, make it impossible to keep the rise in global temperatures below 2¢ªC by the year 2100; the most likely outcome would be a 4¢ªC rise, which has prompted calls for most of the world's remaining hydrocarbons to be left in the ground. The IEA estimates the investment needed for "decarbonising" future electricity production alone at an astounding $44 trillion. The best hope of avoiding that much warming is a huge increase in energy efficiency.</p>
<p>One big component of that task will be to adapt the existing stock of buildings. Amory Lovins, one of the foremost prophets of energy efficiency and founder of Rocky Mountain Institute, a think-tank and consultancy based in Colorado, believes that the scope for improvement remains huge. He has long preached that proper building design and energy storage can eliminate the need for air-conditioning and space heating in most climates, and illustrates this by growing bananas in his own house, on a windswept mountainside in Colorado where winter temperatures can drop to -44¢ªC. Eliminating the heating system for his house, he says, saved more money than he spent on insulation and fancy windows. His optimism is slowly winning converts.</p>
<p>Despite all the obstacles, pretty much all the technology the world needs for a clean, green future is already available. As A.T. Kearney, a consultancy, notes in a recent report for the World Energy Council, a think-tank: "Energy-efficiency potentials combined with renewable-energy sources and shale-gas potentials provide an abundance of energy that can be made accessible with currently available technologies."</p>
<p>Transmission costs for electricity are plunging, thanks to solid-state technology, which makes efficient direct-current circuitry safer and more flexible. Power grids which were previously isolated can now be connected: one audacious plan involves a 700-mile, £4 billion ($6 billion) link between Britain and Iceland. Such projects are costly up front, but offer big long-term savings from cheaper power, better storage and increased resilience.</p>
<p>More effective management of supply and demand also offers scope for big savings, as this special report will show. Sensors can now collect vast amounts of data about energy use, and computer power and algorithms can crunch that information to offer incentives to customers to curb consumption at peak times and increase it when demand is low. At the same time business models which can turn a profit from thrifty energy use are developing, and capital markets are waking up to their potential.</p>

<p>That splendidly energy-efficient house in Notting Hill demonstrates just how much can be done right now, even if it does not yet come cheap. Its owner, Michael Liebreich, founded a business called New Energy Finance, which he sold to Bloomberg, a financial-information company, in 2009. He has spent tens of thousands of pounds on making his home thrifty, resilient and productive.</p>
<p>The house is no stranger to energy revolutions. In 1865 its original builders installed a state-of-the-art delivery and storage system: a coal hole in the pavement, sealed by a handsome cast-iron hatch. Gas and then electric lighting, central heating and hot water came later. But the revolution under its current owner is the biggest yet. Despite the airtight insulation the rooms feel airy. Specially designed chimney cowls suck stale, moist air from the house while a heat exchanger keeps the thermal energy indoors.</p>
<p>The house now requires remarkably little input of energy. Gas and electricity bills for a dwelling of this size would normally run to at least £3,500 ($5,500) a year, but once everything is in place the owner expects not only to spend nothing but to receive a net payment for the electricity he produces. On the roof is a large array of solar panels which deliver two kilowatts (kW) of electricity on sunny days. Another source of power is a 1.5kW fuel cell in the former coal bunker. It runs on gas, with over 80% efficiency--far more than a conventional power station or boiler. The electricity from these two sources powers the household's (ultra-frugal) domestic appliances and its low-energy lighting, as well as a heat pump (a refrigerator in reverse) that provides underfloor heating. A water tank stores surplus heat. Spare electricity is fed back into the grid.</p>
<p>Mr Liebreich does not claim that his house is easily copied, but he insists that through "thinning mist" the future is visible. "The only things that are inherently costly are the thermodynamic process and resource depletion--for everything else costs have come down, are coming down and will come down in future," he says. In short, most of the forces changing the energy market are pushing in the right direction.</p>
