Ever since Donald Trump won the 2024 US presidential elections, bitcoin has been surging, going up over 40% in the last two weeks. Recently, the cryptocurrency soared past $97,000, having risen 8.32% in just the last 7 days, and is currently trading at $96,906.09. The overall crypto market is also buoyant, with the crypto volume jumping 10.06% over the past 24 hours to touch $198.83 billion. The markets are enthused about Bitcoin's prospects going ahead, given that Trump has hinted towards establishing a dedicated role in the White House for deliberating crypto policies. Trump has been vocally pro-crypto and had promised, during his presidential campaign, to scale back <keyword id="24085738" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="crypto-regulations" source="keywords">crypto regulations</keyword> and fire SEC chair Gary Gensler, who had initiated a crackdown on digital assets in the US. The crypto lobby in the US has been advocating for crypto-friendly SECs and access to banks. In a bid to do so, crypto companies have pumped in over $119 million to support pro-crypto candidates. Says Edul Patel, co-founder and CEO of Mudrex, "Market sentiment grew stronger from Bloomberg's report of Trump’s plan to establish a dedicated White House role for crypto policy. The anticipation of faster regulatory clarity coupled with BlackRock’s Bitcoin ETF options projecting a $176k price target by 2026 has driven BTC’s price to the $95K milestone and beyond." The ongoing rally is not restricted to just bitcoin but also extended to Solana and XRP, which gained 10.85% and 59.02%, respectively, over the last 7 days. But does this mean that good times are coming for <keyword id="19991358" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-markets" source="keywords">Indian markets</keyword> as well? Apurva Sheth, Head of Market Perspectives &amp; Research, SAMCO Securities, notes that bitcoin is a proxy for risk-taking in the markets. Bitcoin moving up means the risk appetite of investors is rising. Conversely, if it falls, then investors prefer safety." Both Nifty and Sensex have lost over 5% each over the last month. FIIs (<keyword id="19932515" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="foreign-institutional-investors" source="keywords">foreign institutional investors</keyword>) have also been scrambling out of Indian markets, having withdrawn Rs 1,14,445.89 crores during October 2024 and offloading Rs 34,348.30 crore so far in November. During trade today, Nifty and Sensex remained in red, with Nifty down by 0.74% and Sensex down by 0.6%. DIIs (domestic institutional investors) have been trying to keep the market afloat in both October and November, pumping in Rs 31,636.77 crore in Indian markets in November so far. Last month, DIIs infused Rs 1,07,254.68 crore in the Indian markets. According to an NSE report, by the end of the previous quarter, FPIs holding in NSE-listed companies stood at 36.3%, despite the seventh consecutive quarterly decline. Previously, FIIs holding in listed companies had hit a record high of 39.9% in December 2021. In contrast, DIIs are increasingly making headway into the Indian markets. Active Domestic Mutual Funds (DMFs) have been increasing their investments in the NSE-listed companies. Their ownership in these companies has risen from 12.4% in December 2021 to 15.7% as of September 30, 2024. Banks and insurance companies have also expanded their market share. Their ownership in NSE-listed companies has grown from 8.8% three years ago to 11% as of pr quarter.

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Uday Padyana moved from India to the US in his 20s, landing a few tech jobs in Silicon Valley. </li><li>Despite better growth opportunities in India, Uday prefers the work culture in the US.</li></ul>This as-told-to essay is based on a conversation with Uday Padyana, a mid-30s manager at a Big Tech company in Silicon Valley. The following has been edited for length and clarity.When I first arrived in <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/reasons-i-left-silicon-valley-california-after-two-years-2023-12">Silicon Valley</a> in 2013 after relocating from India in my 20s, I wanted to move back.My parents and grandmother thought it was just homesickness, but I'd previously lived and worked outside of my hometown, so knew that this wasn't that feeling. It was because I knew that working in Big Tech in Silicon Valley would change me into a different person and I'd never move back.It's been 11 years since then, and I think I've gotten happier with my life here now that I've worked at a <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/landing-job-career-big-tech-interview-amazon-meta-google-apple-2024-5">few different jobs in Big Tech</a>. But I've also missed out on so many things back home — my family, friends, social circle, and sense of belonging.<h2 id="c75e447d-f472-426f-b4b8-19ef15acd002">Working in the US suits me more, although I'd have more opportunities in India</h2>I've interned and worked at a few other tech companies in the Valley, including <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/early-paypal-employee-sold-stock-too-soon-millionaire-2021-6">PayPal</a>, and I'm currently at a <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/quit-big-tech-dream-job-pay-perks-not-worth-it-2024-5">Big Tech company</a>. Prior to my current role, I also worked in Atlanta at a midsize tech firm, and outside the industry for over four years as a data analyst in Washington, DC.There are <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/millennial-working-in-bengaluru-the-silicon-valley-of-india-2023-7">more opportunities</a> in India. The <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/heres-why-investors-say-india-tech-startup-ecosystem-booms-2022-12">tech industry's growth rate</a> has been phenomenal there, especially for the top companies. If I worked the same job for the same company in India, my salary would probably be about 60% of what I make here, yet I'd probably be able to save almost twice the amount I save here.That's because the cost of living and taxes in Silicon Valley are higher than those in India. There's no public transportation here, so people either have to have a car or pay for Uber, which is expensive compared to India. High-quality organic food and eating out here is also more expensive, and hiring cleaning services is cheaper in India. I also have higher expenses here because of my annual trips back to see family in India.But despite this, working in the US suits me better than working in India because of my individualistic mindset. There's a <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/middle-managers-great-flattening-organization-meta-tech-layoffs-firing-2023-3">flatter hierarchy</a> in general, and I respond well to environments with accountability, ownership, and independence.I also like that there's more scope to explore restaurants with cuisines from across the world, meet people from different countries, and have access to <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/sf-hot-spots-where-founders-vc-tech-workers-hang-out-2024-7">top networking places</a>, conferences, and classes here in the US.<h2 id="dfe1658c-5024-4333-9878-9867140a9360">I had reverse culture shock when I first went home</h2>The first time I went back to India after three years of living in the US, I had a <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/reverse-culture-shock-moving-back-to-america-asia-singapore-2023-12">hard time adjusting</a>. It was <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/india-delhi-heat-wave-record-water-crisis-2024-5">too hot for me</a> and everything felt smaller, including my own room, where I'd lived for years. I was more sensitive to noise; it's quieter in the US, while India is bustling with sounds all the time, so I couldn't sleep. The air quality was also worse.Since I was upset, I threw tantrums like a teenager. By the end of the trip, though, I realized I was at fault since I was expecting people to change their ways and norms for me when I was only visiting for a few weeks.I decided to travel once a year to India, a promise I've been able to keep for the most part.Despite these regular visits, I realize I've changed. I expect more silence and personal space. The <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/india-heatwaves-could-soon-not-be-survivable-humans-world-bank-2022-12">summers have gotten even hotter</a> in India, and I've become accustomed to air conditioning and higher-quality wifi since we have them everywhere in the US. I've also forgotten some customs and have done them incorrectly.Because of my newly acquired mannerisms, preferences, habits, and life choices, it's easy for my old social circle to see me as "the guy who's living abroad." If I say a word in an American way out of habit, sometimes they think that I'm doing it deliberately to show off. Or if I say something authoritatively, it's assumed that I got that confidence from living in the US, not because that was always my personality.I also see that I might come across as snobbish now, so I have to consciously think through how I'm coming across before I say something. Some people back home think very competitively — they've hinted that they think I'm just plain lucky, and if they had the opportunity, they'd do it too and much better.<h2 id="72978b4b-ce83-4e5e-a4d6-9a4c6e3aeb5e">I missed out on relationships</h2>My definitions of comfort, friendship, and relationships have also changed.Texts on WhatsApp and calls back home aren't as effective as <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-to-deal-with-homesickness-loneliness-living-abroad-2023-11">being in person with family and friends</a>. WhatsApp calls can work for short chats but aren't as good for emotional conversations. It's difficult to assess their emotional and physical states, and there's also a higher risk of arguments due to misunderstandings.Sometimes, friends or family don't share things with me because they think certain things would be better to be said in person. I also don't share as much about my life with them as I would've naturally if I were around. I've missed many occasions where people meet and reconnect — family members' and friends' weddings, childbirths, and other important events of their lives.I also didn't evolve alongside my friends in India. I haven't followed their timelines and feel less peer pressure. Differences in mindsets between my old friends and I have crept up over time, from food and content preferences to outlook on life.I feel like I could've grown faster both materially and spiritually in the US because of the opportunities I had here, and that may not necessarily be at the same pace as the people I grew up with.<h2 id="8b127f72-db4a-46f9-a249-de4026d82a01">I wonder what my life would've been like if I stayed in India</h2>I'm generally happy with my job and my experience working in Big Tech here.While I have no regrets about my choice to move to the US for a tech job, part of me wonders what my life would be like now had I stayed back in India. Maybe I would've gone after dreams I aspired to as a teenager, like becoming an <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/quit-tech-job-launch-startup-now-make-400000-2024-4">entrepreneur in tech</a> or entertainment.But perhaps this is a bit of wishful thinking. As a colleague here put it, "Who knows, maybe you'd have just been a failure there — so many try and fail and only a few succeed." I don't have any way of knowing what could've been.Living somewhere new changes you internally and makes you a different person. I feel too foreign here and too foreign there. Even if I had all the resources to go back to India, it'd be different — I've grown apart from who I was. And as much as I really like the US, I'm not from here. I don't have the same upbringing as many people here, so there are subtle differences in the jokes, music, pop culture references, and even habits.One thing I'd like to do is to actualize all of my gifts and feel fully utilized, whether from a creative standpoint or a tech and business standpoint. I feel I haven't done that much and mostly have been flailing to make ends meet and get myself into a <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/personal-finance/investing/financial-plan">"safer" situation</a> by having a job, insurance, and savings.But with the recession, there's nothing safe, and I see that I could've just taken risks in the first place — on my startup idea, trying to break into the movie industry, or even taking a break to write a novel I've wanted to write — and I can do so even now.When I first moved to the US, I explored different frameworks for long-term thinking, such as <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/what-you-can-learn-from-jeff-bezos-leadership-style">Jeff Bezos's</a> famous approach of <a target="_blank" href="https://www.goodreads.com/quotes/896830-i-wanted-to-project-myself-forward-to-age-80-and">looking at your life from the point of view of yourself at 80</a>. But in <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/taylor-swift-made-nfl-more-popular-in-america-us-2023-9">the NFL</a>, a team owner's face is often as familiar to fans as any player's.Most owners have long histories with their teams, which are often family-owned and passed down from generation to generation.But this narrative could change as the league inches closer to opening its doors to a slew of institutional investors, including <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/top-private-equity-firms-investing-in-sports-2022-10">private-equity firms</a>, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/personal-finance/venture-capital">venture-capital funds</a>, and potentially sovereign-wealth funds.Why is the league considering this? Team valuations are skyrocketing, raising the bar to entry to anyone but the richest of the rich, including <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/rich-sports-team-owners-investing-private-equity-2023-9">Silicon Valley billionaires </a>and <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/sports-investing-pga-tour-nfl-2024-1#:~:text=Lasry%20and%20Cohen%20are%20prime,hedge%20fund%20boss%20of%20Point72.">Wall Street tycoons</a>.In 2023, the average team was worth a record $5.1 billion, up by 14% from the year prior, according to <a target="_blank" href="https://www.forbes.com/lists/nfl-valuations/?sh=36a0b9717386">Forbes</a>. The Washington Commanders is a prime example of how team valuations have shot up — the billionaire <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/apollo-global-josh-harris-family-office-tensions-2022-9">Josh Harris</a> bought the team for $6.05 billion in July."There are only a limited number of billionaires left who will check every box to be a lead owner," <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/mark-patricof-private-equity-investing-professional-athletes-2021-5">Mark Patricof</a>, the founder of the investment firm Patricof Co and an operating executive at the private-equity firm Crestview, said. "Clearly, they're going to have to have a change in the threshold of what the lead owner has to put up to control the team."The NFL has long encouraged the family-ownership model, but it appears that executives are starting to realize that skyrocketing valuations are making it harder for owners to keep these teams within their families. <a target="_blank" href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/features/2024-02-09/nfl-owners-face-huge-estate-taxes-to-keep-teams-in-family">Changing the rules</a> to allow more owners with passive interests to invest in teams could help NFL families benefit from rising team values without losing control."In 2026, 50% of the tax exemptions that are currently in place for estate taxes are expiring," Carrie Potter, a lecturer of sports management at Rice University and a sports-finance expert, said. "So when these teams are selling for $6 billion, the amount of estate tax that they're going to have to pay is incredibly high.'Another reason the ownership rules may change is that there are no Black controlling owners in the NFL and fewer than 12 Black billionaires in the United States, Forbes data shows. Some teams have partial Black owners, including the Denver Broncos — whose partial owners include <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/mellody-hobson-life-career-denver-broncos-ariel-investments-george-lucas-2022-6">Mellody Hobson</a>, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/condoleezza-rices-advice-for-women-leadership-tips-kpmg-2022-6">Condoleezza Rice</a>, and <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/lewis-hamilton-net-worth-salary-wife-f1-mercedes">Lewis Hamilton</a>, but they are not controlling owners.Therefore, the burning topic of private equity will most likely spark conversation when executives from all 32 NFL teams gather at the annual league meeting in <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/moving-to-orlando-florida-cheaper-homes-from-miami-california-ny-2024-2">Orlando</a> in a few weeks. Owners are expected to discuss what the model could look like, who could be affected, and how it could impact ownership diversity."I think the owners are going to be split," Kurt Rotthoff, a finance expert and professor of economics at Seton Hall University, told BI. "I think they'll be torn because of the legacy aspects that you can build by having the family or individuals or a small group of people own the team for long periods of time."So, what could a rule change mean for institutional investors, their Wall Street brokers, owners, and sports fans? To better understand this, BI spoke to leading sports-finance professionals, including Patricof, an investment banker who has advised <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/florida-democrats-dwyane-wade-grant-hill-nba-scott-2024-senate-2023-5">Dwyane Wade</a> and <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/coco-gauff-best-tennis-advice-from-venus-williams-2023-8">Venus Williams</a>, and three sports-finance professors from leading institutions.Here are their thoughts.<div type="image" title="Head coach Andy Reid and owner Clark Hunt wave to fans" height="3536" width="5314" msid="108117361" hostid="261"></div><h2>The NFL team owners</h2>Gil Fried, a professor at the University of West Florida and the author of "<a target="_blank" href="https://us.humankinetics.com/products/managing-sport-facilities-4th-edition-with-web-study-guide">Managing Sports Facilities</a>" and "<a target="_blank" href="https://affiliate.insider.com?amazonTrackingID=biauto-64358-20&amp;h=dbead43162155666d5ec6c1b317fc3c4e6ff05419677e3c060b695f14c011271&amp;postID=65e091d5e3dcaf0271294dd8&amp;postSlug=nfl-ownership-rules-change-big-win-wall-street-private-equity-2024-2&amp;site=bi&amp;u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.amazon.com%2FSport-Finance-Gil-B-Fried%2Fdp%2F1492559733-">Sport Finance</a>," said he thinks the owners will be the winners of any rule change because it will allow them to cash in on their investment at a high premium while potentially still maintaining a majority stake in their teams.Opening the door to people "who aren't shy when it comes to dropping a billion dollars for part ownership of minority ownership in a team is going to be a godsend for current owners," he said.Experts also think NFL team owners' "wealth would increase drastically," Rotthoff said — due to the considerable profits they've already made from <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/dyal-basketball-private-equity-phoenix-suns-nba-team-stakes-2021-7">team valuations </a>in the past decade.<div type="image" title="Football player celebrating with a crowd of people at the New York Stock Exchange" height="3257" width="4886" msid="108117363" hostid="261"></div><h2>Wall Street</h2>Wall Street will come out on top because it is made up of companies that stand to earn big fees managing these investments and acting as <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/what-do-investment-bankers-do-2016-7#:~:text=%22An%20investment%20bank%20does%20something,through%20to%20the%20very%20end.">brokers for buyers and sellers</a>.Experts think the NFL won't go as far as allowing sovereign-wealth funds, or funds controlled by foreign governments, to invest in sports teams. But, they think the NFL will allow teams to sell small, passive stakes to a wide variety of other types of institutional investors, including <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/wall-street-private-equity-woes-debt-stock-market-interest-rates-2023-12">private-equity</a> and venture-capital firms, both of which tend to raise money from wealthy people to invest in an array of assets, whether startups, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/blackstone-jonathan-gray-predicts-commercial-real-estate-bottom-2024-1">real-estate</a>, or sports teams.<a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/citigroup-and-jpmorgan-announce-new-investment-banking-leaders-viswas-raghavan-2024-2">Wall Street investment banks</a> could also benefit in their role as advisors to wealthy investors and sports teams, including helping connect buyers with sellers. Just last year, Goldman Sachs launched a new Sports Franchise Group within its investment-banking team to help connect wealthy people with opportunities to invest in teams, stadiums, and other sports assets, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.wsj.com/finance/banking/goldmans-pitch-to-rich-clients-hey-buy-a-piece-of-this-sports-team-5a58746b">the Wall Street Journal</a> reported.<div type="image" title="Stock man with chart" height="350" width="700" msid="108117365" hostid="261"></div><h2>Investors</h2>Investors are less likely to be winners from the NFL rules changes.Experts believe as soon as the rules change, there could be an initial boost in <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/sports-leaders-invest-billions-into-the-pga-tour-2024-1">team valuations</a> as investors scramble to get a piece of the pie. But new investors may find themselves disappointed in the long term, Rotthoff said."I think Wall Street would see the initial honeymoon bump in terms of investors trying to jump in," he said. He compared it to <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/coinbase-stock-price-sam-bankman-fried-ftx-crash-markets-cryptocurrency-2022-11">much-anticipated IPOs</a>, which can result in a stock popping on its first day of trading only to decline after the hype fades."It's a very risky long-term return," he said. "A lot of the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/super-bowl-2023-state-farm-stadium-grass-cost-months-2023-2">NFL facilities</a> are aged and have a lot of upgrades that need to happen or perhaps new stadiums to be built."But it could also mean rising costs, especially as "smart money investors" — such as institutional investors, hedge funds, or private-equity firms — start demanding a return on their investment, Fried said."That's their whole purpose," Fried said. "They want to have a strong rate of return. The only way to get that is by finding a new revenue stream." That could mean increased concession or ticket prices, he added. And it could mean average fans "get priced out of being able to actually go to games".Experts also believe that <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-overtime-grew-revenue-to-projected-100-million-advertising-sponsorships-2024-2">sports fans </a>may lose passion if they feel like the corporation is putting on a show.Fans may "feel like losers," Rotthoff said. The NFL is gearing up to change team ownership rules in what could be a massive win for Wall Street

<ul><li><keyword id="1673591" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="indian-residents" source="Orion">Indian residents</keyword> are required to report their foreign investments, which may include holdings in foreign <keyword id="6354298" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="stocks" source="Orion">stocks</keyword>, bonds, or other financial instruments. </li><li>Ownership of foreign real estate, whether residential or commercial, must be reported to Indian tax authorities. </li><li>If you possess ESOPs from a foreign company, you are required to disclose these foreign holdings when filing your <keyword id="6354751" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="income-tax" source="Orion">income tax</keyword> return. </li></ul>Recently, the IT Appellate Tribunal of Mumbai imposed a penalty of ₹10 lakh per year on <keyword id="59866" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="taxpayers" source="Orion">taxpayers</keyword> who failed to report <keyword id="466213" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="foreign-assets" source="Orion">foreign assets</keyword> under schedule FA of the income tax return (ITR) form. The penalty was levied under black money Act. Compared to the Income Tax Act, the penalty under the black money act is enormous. "The ITAT decision is a wake-up call for many working professionals and NRIs regarding the complexity of tax compliance in India; even if the taxpayer has paid their taxes, mere non-disclosure results in hefty penalties,” says Suneel Dasari, CEO and founder, EZtax.in. Here's a breakdown of the key foreign assets and income that must be disclosed in the income tax returns. <cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="Foreign investments" comment="Subhead" text="Foreign investments">Foreign investments</cmsannotation>: Indian residents are required to report their foreign investments, which may include holdings in foreign stocks, bonds, mutual funds, or other financial instruments. This reporting extends to income generated from these investments, such as dividends, interest, or capital gains. Individuals need to disclose the nature and value of these investments in their tax returns. Foreign bank accounts: Any foreign bank accounts, whether savings, current, or fixed deposit accounts, must be reported. This includes accounts held individually or jointly, along with details such as the name of the bank, account numbers, and the highest balance maintained during the financial year. <cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="Foreign real estate" comment="Subhead" text="Foreign real estate">Foreign real estate</cmsannotation>: Ownership of foreign real estate, whether residential or commercial, must be reported to Indian tax authorities. This includes details about the property's location, current market value, and any income generated from it, such as rental income. “Any rental income or capital gains from selling these assets may be subject to taxation,” says Soni. <cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="Financial or beneficial interest in overseas entities" comment="Subhead" text="Financial or beneficial interest in overseas entities">Financial or beneficial interest in overseas entities</cmsannotation>: In case an individual possesses a financial or beneficial stake in any overseas entity, such as serving as a partner in an overseas limited liability partnership (LLP) or firm, or receiving benefits from a foreign private trust, it is imperative to disclose this interest in accordance with tax regulations. “Residents in India with foreign income from ESOPs, or the voluntary purchase of foreign stock or other non-tangible instruments are at risk due to country or central bank level reciprocity agreements that would allow the Indian government access to information that would otherwise be unavailable,” says Dasari. Non-declaration also revokes your right to claim relief under the double taxation avoidance agreement for your foreign income. Hence it is critical to disclose such foreign assets in the schedule FA of ITR.

India has established tax treaties with numerous countries to address the issue of double taxation for taxpayers. These treaties outline specific mechanisms to determine the tax obligations of individuals who earn income in both India and another country. They also allocate the taxing rights for each country concerning the respective sources of income. By utilising the provisions outlined in these treaties, taxpayers can effectively eliminate the burden of being taxed twice on the same income. “When you are a resident of one country but have earned an income from another country; naturally you want to avoid paying tax twice on the same income in both the countries. To avoid paying double tax, one has to refer to the DTAA (Double Tax Avoidance Agreement) between the two countries,” says Gupta. Also, where any source of income is subject to tax in both India and the other country, the tax treaty provides for claiming foreign tax credit in the country of residence. “This allows taxpayers to eliminate double taxation by offsetting the tax liability in India with taxes paid outside India,” says Chandana. Have income from foreign source? Keep this in mind while filing taxes

Markets regulator <keyword id="35210" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="sebi" source="Orion">SEBI</keyword> has simplified the procedural requirements for onboarding of <keyword id="6389755" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="foreign-portfolio-investors" source="Orion">Foreign Portfolio Investors</keyword> (<keyword id="2005494" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="fpis" source="Orion">FPIs</keyword>) in a bid to facilitate ease of doing business and to reduce the time taken for their registration. The regulator allowed designated depository participants (DDPs) to grant <keyword id="725142" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="fpi" source="Orion">FPI</keyword> registration on the basis of scanned copies of application forms and supporting documents, according to a circular issued on Monday. Granting of registration on the basis of scanned copies has been allowed but trading can only be activated following the verification of the physical documents, it said. At present, applicants are required to send both scanned copies as well as physical documents of application forms and supporting documents to the DDPs for obtaining the FPI registration. In addition, the <keyword id="63783" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="securities-and-exchange-board" source="Orion">Securities and Exchange Board</keyword> of India (SEBI) has allowed DDPs to accept the use of digital signatures by FPIs for the execution of registration-related documents. Besides, the regulator has permitted verification of <keyword id="61610" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="pan" source="Orion">PAN</keyword> by DDPs through the Common Application Form (CAF) module available on the websites of the depositories. Currently, DDPs can verify the PAN only after receiving a hard copy of the PAN from the applicant. In a bid to reduce the physical movement of documents and the time taken for registration, SEBI has allowed authorized bank officials to use the SWIFT mechanism for certification of copies of original documents submitted by FPIs, it said. These moves are aimed at easing the onboarding process of FPIs and reducing the time taken for granting registration as well as opening of demat, trading and bank accounts of FPIs, the SEBI said. For operational convenience, SEBI said in case an FPI applicant belongs to an existing FPI investor group, it may submit its unique FPI investor group ID in the CAF, in lieu of providing complete details of all group constituents. In case the applicant wants to club additional FPIs (apart from itself) in such a unique investor group ID, the FPI only needs to provide details of such additional FPIs, along with the investor group ID, it said. Currently, an FPI applicant, at the time of registration, is required to provide details of FPIs with whom it shares ownership of more than 50 percent or common control. Depositories in turn generate a unique FPI investor group ID for identifying each such FPI investor group. The circular, which will be applicable with immediate effect, came after SEBI's board in its meeting in December 2022 approved the simplification of certain procedural requirements for on boarding of FPIs. Earlier this month, SEBI made stringent norms for FPIs asking them to disclose any material change in their structure and common ownership within seven working days. With regard to new FPI registrations, the regulator can ask them for any additional documents which may be required.
